Subway Summary
The Battle Subway is a no-frills, straight-to-the-point gauntlet of consecutive battles! There aren't any special added powers or complicated arenas in a Battle Subway challenge. Here, each battle is pure—your backpack against the opponent's backpack, your Pokemon against the opponent's Pokemon, and your skills against their skills!
As you win battles, you'll face stronger and stronger opponents. Lose twice in one Session, and you'll lose your Win Streak... unless you save your streak, by beating Emmet in the same Session!
Accumulate enough wins, and you'll be able to battle the Subway Boss. If you can maintain enough high Win Streaks in multiple formats, tantalizing extra prizes will become available to you...

Arena — Gear Railway
A network of rail tunnels that connects the Unova region to its beating heart in Nimbasa City. Running alongside the mundane commuter lines and matching their pace, the Battle Trains showcase the skill and power of the Subway's challengers to a crowd of onlookers in every parallel car. Indeed, some passengers take the trains back and forth, trying to follow the win streaks of their favorite competitors.

[FMT]
FormatsThe Battle Subway can be played in 2-step-per-round Singles, or 1-step-per-round Doubles. In either case, the player and the referee both have a Team Size of 2 and a Selection Size of 3 or more; that is, both trainers "bring 3+ and pick 2" in each battle.
Levels 1-3 are "Leveling" formats, and Level 4 is the "Pinnacle" format.
In Singles formats, the referee will send out first and order second in each battle.
Doubles formats are played with Snake Ordering. In Doubles formats, the referee will send out one of their Pokemon, then the player will send out both of their own Pokemon, then the referee will send out their other Pokemon and issue that Pokemon their orders.
[WST]
Win StreaksPlayers will battle opposing trainers in sequence; up to three battles in a single challenge. After they defeat each opposing trainer, their Win Streak in the format they are playing will increase by one.
Players have a
Rail Pass (represented with
:pass:) saved in their challenge thread, that tracks their Win Streaks and Battle Points (see below) in each combination of Progression and Format. That is, their Win Streaks for Leveling Singles, Leveling Doubles, Pinnacle Singles, and Pinnacle Doubles.
Players have Medicine added to their Backpack at the start of each Session, depending on their initial Win Streak:
- 0-2 Wins:
Max Potion - 3-5 Wins:
Super Potion - 6-8 Wins:
Potion - 9+ Wins:Nothing.
Between battles, the player's team is fully healed and their non-Medicine items are fully restored, but their Medicine is lost if spent.
If the player lose too many battles, their Win Streak will end. The next time the player plays that format, they'll have to start from the beginning. See "Ending a Challenge", below.
[BPT]
Battle PointsAfter each victory in the Battle Subway, the player will earn Battle Points (BP) based on their performance, the length of their current challenge, and their current Win Streak.
The amount of BP the player earns is:
- Maximum of 500 BP per Battle.
- 40 * current format Win Streak (including the paying Battle)
- + (100 * player total remaining HP / player total maximum HP)
- + (100 * player total remaining Energy / player total maximum Energy)
- If the NPC is not Emmet,
- + (200 * NPC total missing HP / NPC total maximum HP)
- + (100 * NPC total missing Energy / NPC total maximum Energy)
- If the NPC is Emmet,
- + 300, regardless of performance.
When a player forfeits a battle, they lose and earn no BP from that battle. Their challenge and streak may continue, depending on other losses. See [LCH] "Last Chance", below.
[OPT]
Opposing TrainersYour regular opponents in the Battle Subway are other challengers, who have the same Win Streak as you. Only one of you will move on...
In the Battle Subway Data Thread, there are premade opposing teams for use by NPC opponents. The referee will randomly select one team in Singles or two different teams in Doubles. There are two pools of teams; one for the first NPC in a Session, and one for the Second.
Each premade Team has three Pokemon and three items, selected to support a specific strategy, which become the referee's bench and Backpack. In Doubles, the referee will use all members and all items of each selected team together as their reserve. The refereemay flavor these as two different Subway Trainers if desired; but they are treated as a single opposing Team.
NPC opponents have standard Technique Control for the challenge Level, plus 1 for every 3 wins in the player's current Win Streak. Thus, NPC opponents grow increasingly more dangerous as the player accumulates Wins.
NPC Pokemon of Level 2 or higher use the Trained, Elite, or Masterful Discipline, as appropriate for their Level.
Some NPC Pokemon have unlocked Techniques. They have Mega Evolution, if listed, regardless of the Session's Level. They have their other listed Techniques at Level 4.
NPC Trainers in the Battle Subway always have these standard items in their Backpack, in addition to those from their premade team:
Eject Button
Weakness Policy
Leftovers
Choice Scarf
When rolling for an NPC's team, exclude any teams that the player has already battled in the current Session, regardless of whether the player won or lost.
Every third battle, the player will instead battle Subway Boss Emmet, described below.
[SBE]
Subway Boss EmmetAwaiting players at the end of each Session, Subway Boss Emmet uses his trusted partners and Pokemon from the Battle Subway's own challengers to test the player.
Emmet has his own preferred Pokemon he may select from, each with associated items, that he combines with one random pre-made team in Singles, or two random pre-made teams in Doubles. Emmet's preferred Pokemon are divided into pairs of regular Pokemon, and individual powerful Pinnacle-only Pokemon.
In Leveling challenges, Emmet may use his first pool of preferred Pokemon, and he rolls from among First Teams not battled this Session.
In Pinnacle challenges, Emmet may use either kind of preferred Pokemon, and he rolls from among Second Teams not battled this Session.
Emmet thus uses a larger reserve and Backpack than regular Battle Subway trainers.
When playing Emmet, the referee may select any desired Discipline for Emmet's preferred Pokemon. The pre-made team that Emmet borrows still uses standard NPC Disciplines.
[LCH]
Last ChanceThe player must now lose two or more (2+) Battles in one Session to lose their Win Streak.
Thus, losing one battle in a Session only sets the player back in the sense that they didn't gain a Win.
Depending on which battles a player loses, they may get a Last Chance to save their Win Streak:
- If a player loses to Emmet and one other trainer in the same Session, their Win Streak is reset.
- If a player loses their first two Battles in a Session, Emmet will offer them a Last Chance to save their now-endangered Win Streak.
In a Last Chance battle, the fate of the player's Win Streak depends on their performance against Emmet:
- If the player defeats Emmet without any of their own Pokemon fainting, their endangered Win Streak is not reset, and their Win against Emmet is added to that Streak.
- If the player defeats Emmet, but one of the Player's Pokemon faint, their endangered Win Streak is halved and rounded down, and then their Win against Emmet is added to that Streak.
- If the player is defeated in a Last Chance Battle, their Win Streak is reset.
In a Last Chance Battle, the Referee is to deny the player as much Win Streak as they believe they safely can (preferably, by defeating them), at their own discretion.
Starting a Challenge
To start a Battle Subway challenge, players will select their challenge format, selecting a Level for the NPC Pokemon and whether to play Singles or Doubles.
If the player has a Win Streak in their selected format, they may optionally choose a challenge type:
- Fresh Start: Discards their Win Streak and start again from 0 wins.
- Resume: Resume their ongoing Win streak. If no challenge type is specified, Resume is assumed.
Players cannot challenge formats whose Level exceeds their own T.Lvl. Player Pokemon whose Level exceeds the chosen Level will be synced.
Ending a Challenge
The player's challenge ends when the third battle in their challenge concludes, or when the player's Win Streak is reset.
In any case, after the player's challenge ends, the referee will tally the BP earned by the player and direct them to the BP shop in this thread to select their prizes.
When the player claims their Subway session in the Prize Claim thread, they will decide what rewards they want to purchase with the BP they earned. Unspent BP is lost.
If the player lost a battle, they spend BP first. Then, their Win Streak and any unspent BP is lost.
