The Battle Subway

( Rewards and BP Shop | Data )

emmet.png

Safety check! All clear to disembark!

This is the Battle Subway. I am Emmet. I am the Subway Boss. You must defeat me to win.

There are lots of other trainers here. They'll battle you to earn a chance to battle me. You must defeat them to be my opponent. You and your Pokemon must work together as a perfect team. If you don't, you won't see victory against me!

We're ready to depart! Trainers aboard! Pokemon aboard! All aboard! We will speed in a straight line towards victory!

For Entry

  • Players and referees must be T.Lv1 or higher.
  • Additionally, referees must have a T.Lv of the challenge's Level minus one, or higher. (T.Lv2 may ref a Level 3 Subway.)
  • Challenging the Battle Subway costs JC, depending on the Level of the challenge.
    • Level 1: 5:tea:JC.
    • Level 2: 6:tea:JC.
    • Level 3: 8:tea:JC.
    • Level 4: 12:tea:JC.

Subway Summary

The Battle Subway is a no-frills, straight-to-the-point gauntlet of consecutive battles!

There aren't any special added powers or complicated arenas in a Battle Subway challenge. Here, each battle is pure—your backpack against the opponent's backpack, your Pokemon against the opponent's Pokemon, and your skills against their skills!

As you win battles, you'll face stronger and stronger opponents. Lose, and you'll lose some of your Win Streak. Accumulate enough wins, and you'll be able to battle the Subway Boss. If you can maintain enough high Win Streaks in multiple formats, tantalizing extra prizes will become available to you...

Arena — Gear Railway
A network of rail tunnels that connects the Unova region to its beating heart in Nimbasa City. Running alongside the mundane commuter lines and matching their pace, the Battle Trains showcase the skill and power of the Subway's challengers to a crowd of onlookers in every parallel car. Indeed, some passengers take the trains back and forth, trying to follow the win streaks of their favorite competitors.

Challenge Details

[FMT]

Formats
The Battle Subway can be played in 3-step-per-round Singles, or 1-step-per-round Doubles. In either case, the player and the referee both have a Team Size of 2 and a Selection Size of 3; that is, both trainers "bring 3 and pick 2" in each battle.
In Singles formats, the referee will send out first and order second in each battle.
Doubles formats are played with snake ordering. In Doubles formats, the referee will send out one of their Pokemon, then the player will send out both of their own Pokemon, then the referee will send out their other Pokemon and issue that Pokemon their orders.
Players will earn a Battle Point bonus when playing Doubles formats, but don't be fooled—this only somewhat offsets the added risk from having both Pokemon in play at the same time!

[WST]

Win Streaks
depotagent.png
Players will battle opposing trainers in sequence; up to three battles in a single challenge. After they defeat each opposing trainer, their Win Streak in the format they are playing will increase by one.
Players have a :pass:Rail Pass (represented with :pass:) saved in their challenge thread, that tracks their Win Streaks in each combination of Level and Format. That is, their Win Streaks for Level 1 Singles, Level 2 Singles, and so on; and their Win Streaks for Level 1 Doubles, Level 2 Doubles, and so on.
If the player loses a battle, their Win Streak in the format they are playing will be reduced by one—that is, one loss counteracts two wins.
The maximum Level 1-3 Win Streak is three (3) wins; and the maximum Level 4 Win Streak is six (6). After a player attains the maximum Win Streak, their challenge will end, even if they haven't played three battles in their current sitting.

[BPT]

Battle Points
clerk.png
After each victory in the Battle Subway, the player will earn Battle Points (BP) based on their performance, the length of their current challenge, and their current Win Streak.
The amount of BP the player earns is:
  • 100 * current format Win Streak, plus
  • (200 * total player Pokemon remaining HP / total player Pokemon maximum HP), plus
  • (200 * total player Pokemon remaining Energy / total player Pokemon maximum Energy), plus
  • 100 more if the format is Doubles,
  • to a maximum of 500 BP per battle; and then
  • doubled (x2) for BP earned from Subway Boss Emmet.
This is a long way to say, players can earn up to 2,000 BP in a single challenge — 500 from regular trainers, and 1,000 from Emmet.
Players can earn much more BP in the easier early battles by retaining high HP and Energy. As their Win Streak grows, less HP and Energy is needed for maximum score, so players can focus more on defeating powerful foes.

[OPT]

Opposing Trainers
acetrainerf.png
Your regular opponents in the Battle Subway are other challengers, who have the same Win Streak as you. Only one of you will move on...
In the Battle Subway Data Thread, there are premade opposing teams for use by NPC opponents. The teams are grouped by Win Streak—1, 2, 4, or 5. The referee will randomly select a team, from among those matching the player's own current format Win Streak.
Each premade Team has three Pokemon and three items, selected to support a specific strategy. In both Singles and Doubles, the referee will use the three members of the selected team as their reserve.
Some NPC Pokemon have unlocked Techniques. They have these Techniques even at Levels below 4.
NPC Trainers in the Battle Subway always have these standard items in their Backpack, in addition to those from their premade team:
  • :eject button:Eject Button
  • :weakness policy:Weakness Policy
  • :leftovers:Leftovers
  • :choice scarf:Choice Scarf
When rolling for an NPC's team, exclude any teams that the player has already battled in the current challenge, regardless of whether the player won or lost.
If the player's current format Win Streak is 3 or 6, the player will instead battle Subway Boss Emmet, described below.

[SBE]

Subway Boss Emmet
emmet.png
Awaiting players who attain a sufficiently high Win Streak, Subway Boss Emmet uses his trusted partners and Pokemon from the Battle Subway's own challengers to test the player.
Emmet has his own premade partial teams, each with Pokemon and items, intended for battling challengers with Win Streaks of 2 wins or of 5 wins.
When playing as Emmet, the referee will first manually select one of Emmet's partial teams, and then combine that partial team with a randomly selected NPC team appropriate for the player's Win Streak. (That is, he'll pull from the pool of teams the player just battled.) Exclude any teams the player has already battled during the current challenge, like normal.
Emmet thus uses a larger reserve and backpack than regular Battle Subway trainers, but he still plays 2v2 Singles or Doubles like other NPC trainers do.

Starting a Challenge

To start a Battle Subway challenge, players will select their challenge format, selecting a Level for the NPC Pokemon and whether to play Singles or Doubles.
If the player has a Win Streak in their selected format, they may optionally choose a challenge type:
  • Fresh Start: Discards their Win Streak and start again from 0 wins.
  • Checkpoint: Requires a Win Streak of 4 or more Wins. Discards their Win Streak and start again with a streak of three (3) wins.
  • Resume: Resume their ongoing Win streak. If no challenge type is specified, Resume is assumed.
If the player's Win Streak in their chosen format is already at the maximum, then their challenge is always a Fresh Start challenge.
Players cannot challenge formats whose Level exceeds their own T.Lvl. Player Pokemon whose Level exceeds the chosen Level will be synced.

Ending a Challenge

The player's challenge ends when they attain the maximum Win Streak of their current format, when the third battle in their challenge concludes, or when the player forfeits their challenge.
The player may choose to accept a loss in an ongoing battle in their challenge, and may post out of sequence to do so. This affects their challenge and their Win Streak as if they had lost that battle.
A player who forfeits their challenge also accepts a loss in their current ongoing battle. This negatively impacts their Win Streak, but only as much as losing does. If they have Win Streak remaining after forfeiting, they may resume that streak at a later time if they wish.
In any case, after the player's challenge ends, the referee will tally the BP earned by the player and direct them to the BP shop to select their prizes. The player will claim their desired prizes in the Prize Claim Thread (not in this thread or their challenge thread.)
After selecting (or declining) prizes, any unspent BP is lost.

expected balancing points:
- the Battle Point bonus for playing doubles
- the amount of Battle Points "lenience" for early or late battles
- remove any accidental incentives for throwing games to lower Win Streak, if any should be found
- hopefully, with the battle point structure, no lifelines are necessary
- this is how eve finds out what guild will award

to do: gauge interest in a Multi-Battle (tag team) format and streaks

Brigid (Mawile)
★★ ⭒ ⭒ Level 2 — EXP: 04 / 10
Name Etymology:
A member of the Tuatha de Dunann and daughter of the Dagda in Irish myth. Brigid was associated with wisdom and presided over the crafts of the hand, including poetry, smithing, and the keeping of livestock.

Attitude and Motive:
Wily and willful. Once she's set her mind on a goal, she'll have it by any means available to her. Brigid lives by the motto "ask forgiveness, not permission."

"Why do you fight?"
”Don't insult me with charity. I'll earn my keep.*

Background:
Brigid lived for a long time on the streets of Lou's hometown, taking what she willed and answering to no one but herself. Preferring to take rather than share, she made her share of enemies, but managed to fast-talk her way out of facing any dire consequences for her actions every time. Eventually, her lifestyle would lead her to get caught trying to steal food from Dagda's stash. Rather than getting the beating she expected, she found herself essentially adopted and brought under his care. When Dagda chose to join Lou's team, he invited Brigid to join as well.

Carthage (Dusknoir)
★★ ⭒ ⭒ Level 2 — EXP: 00 / 10
Name Etymology:
A major mercantile and maritime empire of the classical world, founded in northern Africa in 800 BCE.

Attitude and Motive:
Taciturn and prone to stubbornness. Often demanding of others if he feels they owe him a debt.

"Why do you fight?"
"I swore service to he who unearthed me. Insistently."

Background:
A stoic guardian of an ancient ruin who was tasked, much like many of his kind, to guard a specific tomb in a catacomb from would-be robbers and despoilers. He sat for centuries, idle and inert, until the forces of time and erosion caused the ceiling to cave in. Being a ghost, he easily rose through the rubble to the now-sunken street above, built right over his former home. With nothing left to guard and a whole new era to see, he accepted an offer to travel with a trainer.

Nemeton (Xerneas)
★★ ⭒ ⭒ Level 2 — EXP: 04 / 10
Name Etymology:
A sacred natural space where Celtic druids would conduct rituals; most often a grove, but sometimes a spring or other natural feature.

Attitude and Motive:
Absentminded, to use generous phrazing. Often, his stature and grandeur cause onlookers to mistake his aloofness for contemplation.

"Why do you fight?"
"It's only natural."

Background:
Nemeton is a manifestation of the life energies of the ecosystem, a walking philosophical symbol of the shared experience of living, and something of a light thinker. Much of his day is spent idly grazing the property, ignorant of the awe of onlookers and caring little for the obstruction he often presents. He is quite large, after all.
