The Best Art In The Pokemon TCG

I have by & large never enjoyed the "Gold" rares the TCG does. There's a few exceptions here & there (the Treasures of Ruin & Raidons, the stadiums because they're full arts that use the gold as outlines) but for the most part I find them gaudy and it's always just gold versions of the existing full arts (which I also dont like!)

However the newest set has Mega Ultra Rares and this is how you do a gold card, hot damn
Mega-Lucario-ex-Gold.png

92.jpg

The texture work is great, the reflections are incredible and the artwork is all new. They look like championship belts

And now I dont have to worry about double posting as I continue my way through the Gen 6 & 7 eras
XY
en_US-XY1-115-cassius.jpg

Cassius. Hey remember what I said ages ago about Bebe? Goes double for Cassius. Did YOU even know that Cassius existed, or that he had a name? Bebe at least gives you an Eevee, Cassius is tucked off to the side running the servers and he’s from a game that frankly I feel a lot of people don’t tear apart that much. Anyway the art here is so charming, love a punk in a cramped space covered in “I basically live here” trash.
(side note, kind of weird Amanita didn’t get a card when all her contemporaries did)

(even more unrelated side ntoe: did you notice all the gen 6 Pokemon here have 3D Model arts? Guess they wanted to emphasize the move to 3D)

Flashfire
en_US-XY2-002-metapod.jpg

Metapod. It was a tie between this and the Walrein, but I went with this one for its sun-through-the-trees lighting on everything, and how it emphasizes the “material” of Metapod’s shell.

Furious Fists
en_US-XY3-033-thundurus.jpg

Thundurus. This set is FULL of dynamic art with strong posing, colors and lighting and a bunch of “paired” arts too. It was hard to pick one, but I think this one stood out the most because of how it depicts Thundurus. Usually the clouds get a lot of “flying around” or “gathering winds” type artwork, whiel looking angry, so seeing one in a town doing a show of beefy strength and lifting a recked car over his shoulders owns. Extremely unique.

Phantom Forces
en_US-XY4-118-lysandres_trump_card.jpg

Lysandre’s Trump Card (Full Art). Him and those inexplicable, unexplained beetle tech nontheless make for a really cool pose, expression, lineart and a good use of the abstract background being reminiscent of his battle background

Primal Clash
en_US-XY5-037-ludicolo.jpg

Ludicolo. Had to pick an ancient trait card here, those were the proto-illustration rares except they were just normal cards. No clue why they decided to have this aesthetic be the gimmick of just random cards but it gave a ton of great art. I went with this one because of the sparkles, presumably from the Splash Dance attack. Ikamen Ludicolo

Double Crisis
en_US-TATM-007-team_aquas_grimer.jpg

Team Aqua’s Grimer. Another miniset but how can I ignore art this good? Every single card is incredible. I went with this one for the creepy vibe (carried through to the Muk) of Aqua’s Grimer about to get the pounce on some Magma grunts.

Roaring Skies
en_US-XY6-030-shuppet.jpg

Shuppet. Playing on its origins here; you’d think Castform would do this type of art first but that’s okay because Shuppet is way cuter. The “crayon” coloring here is very distinct.

en_US-XY7-021-gyarados.jpg

Gyarados (Ancient Trait). This is fine. Don’t worry about it, Fisherman.

BREAKThrough
en_US-XY8-072-swoobat.jpg

Swoobat. This set has a lot of cards depicting the Parallel Cities (did you know all the BREAK sets have a continuous background storyline?? Alakazam goes off in one of them) offering a number of great “Pokemon in the life” arts so anyawy I threw all of those away for the cutest swoobat you’ve ever seen flying at sunset look how happy it is!!!!!

BREAKPoint
en_US-XY9-051-hypno.jpg

Hypno. Listen, I really wanted to pick the Deliquent full art with the adorable Mightyena but just. Look at this. I have to pick it. Goodnight, Babies

Generations
en_US-TwentiethAnn-RC12-gulpin.jpg

Gulpin. This is also a reprint set but with way more regular arts. Thankfully there’s a Radiant Collection and what you thought I was going to choose the “Charmander grows up with its trainer” artwork? Of course not. Look at these two dweebs. Where’s the sequel of teen kid doing this with his Swalot

Fates Collide
en_US-XY10-018-omastar.jpg

Omastar. The story for this set is the two worlds have been forcibly merged, so things are a bit of a mess. I like this one for taking that concept into a “ruined” aesthetic whiel also being drawn beautifully. What a mood

Steam Siege
en_US-XY11-038-mareep.jpg

Mareep. Oh my goddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Evolutions
en_US-XY12-108-mistys_determination.jpg

Misty’s Determination (Full Art). This was the “base set reprint” type set, where they reused like all of Base Set but with a few other cards and some new Exes and Supporters and such so...there wasn’t a lot of new art to pick from. But I enjoy Misty’s outfit and more dynamic pose, so she wins.

Sun & Moon
en_US-SM1-051-charjabug.jpg

Charjabug. The sun coming out after a rain while all the water droplets are still glsitening is such a nice mod. Love how you can match up the drop on the head as coming from the leaf right above it.

Guardians Rising
en_US-SM2-049-slowbro.jpg

Slowbro. I was going to pick this just because the scene of Slowbro goofily reaching for a drifting tamato berry was good enough on its own, but then I noticed the Shellder not liking where this is going. Doesn’t like spicy food!

Burning Shadows
en_US-SM3-023-simisear.jpg

Simisear. Objectively the coolest Simisear depiction.

Shining Legends
en_US-SL-014-reshiram.jpg

Reshiram. TOKIYA’s style is very expressive and cartoony, everything just has this style to it hat fits reshiram perfectly, and there’s something about the posing that feels different than the norm.

Crimson Invasion
en_US-SM4-068-registeel.jpg

Registeel. I won’t lie, there was a lot of other artwork that I think might be better drawn or more stylistic or just depicting trainers really stylishly but like. I just love the concept of this. “Registeel talking with an Aether Resort guy, in the resort”. It’s so nonchalant. I want more like this. Show me a Reshiram that has to sit there and talk to some Hiker. Depict Snacksworth shared snack with Virizion under the tree.

Ultra Prism
en_US-SM5-153-lusamine.jpg

Lusamine (Full Art). I was going to pick Manaphy but then I saw this set had THIS card. Look at it, incredible. What a design.

Forbidden Light
en_US-SM6-017-delphox.jpg

Delphox. Kawayoo you’ve done it again. A great depiction of the “robes” of delphox in particular.

Celestial Storm
en_US-SM7-083-minior.jpg

Minior. An underrated Pokemon, glad one of its first arts is so pretty. The clouds, the stars falling heind it, the depiction of the Pokemon itself….also for some reason this set had a bunch of modern reprints of a lot of Gen 2 & 3 cards? Weird.

Dragon Majesty
en_US-DM-070-zinnia.jpg

Zinnia (Full Art). Her “fierce” pose is pretty iconic, so cool to see it depicted here. Well drawn! And I like the “aura” of presumably dragon energy built around her.

Lost Thunder
en_US-SM8-038-moltres.jpg

Moltres. Moltres is kind of an awkward Pokemon in a lto of angle,s but here I think it works. It reminds me of old depictions of phoenixes and such. Pretty flames, both surrounding it and on its body. The tail in particular is a highlight.

Team Up
en_US-SM9-053-gengar_mimikyu_gx.jpg

Gengar & Mimikyu GX. The introduction of Tag Team cards, and all of the EX cards have stellar drawn artwork instead of more 3D models. Fantastic posing, great team up, love the moon in the background, the dark forest. A++++

Unbroken Bonds
en_US-SM10-117-greninja.jpg

Greninja. I mean just look at it. What a(n unintentional) metaphor, too. Ohmura’s one of the official artists for the series, by the way.

Unified Minds
en_US-SM11-020-dhelmise.jpg

Dhelmise. The motion of the waves as it carries around all tehse wishiwashi and pyukumuku is just endearing to me alright.

Hidden Fates
en_US-HF-044-moltres_zapdos_articuno_gx.jpg

Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno GX. Everyone’s depicted perfectly in a mix of elegant and gonna fuck you up. Arita doesn’t miss!

Cosmic Eclipse
en_US-SM12-075-solgaleo_lunala_gx.jpg

Solgaleo & Lunala GX. It was a tie between this one and the alt art, but I love the visual of Lillie riding Solgaleo more than standing with deterimination.

1754099961126.png

This is a very dynamic style, and the swishing of Arbok's tail is quite unique.
1754100256869.png

Another by Naoki Saito. I love how the roar is drawn.
1754101048983.png

This one's cute. Happy Politoed. The foam looks wonderful.
1754101318846.png

It's a shame to leave out the colorful pebbles of the Dimension Valley, seen on many of Phantom Forces's cards, but I like this Joltik a lot. Its eyes are beautifully drawn, and I can't resist the blue lighting. It's a shame I also missed Night March.
1754101711259.png

Another Groudon-EX! I really wish they let artists draw Pokemon-EX more often, because this is positively explosive. Just like the DEX one, I love the golden glow.
1754102051223.png

I forgot the last micro-set, but here's my Double Crisis pick, in which we see Aggron crashing a Team Aqua party. It looks appropriately huge and imposing. I've been playing too much Persona but it reminds me of Persona 3's Thanatos
I love that instead of the same copy-pasted Pokedex entries, this set gave us Aqua and Magma Grunts boasting about their Pokemon's strength.
1754102623883.png

Zekrom is a good fit for kawayoo's style. The storm clouds look really good here as well.
1754102823561.png

Holy shit this one is good. I'd never have expected the vibration-like blur effect on the energy orb but it works so well to convey Gardevoir's power.
1754103205277.png

I wonder what Elgyem's feeling. Is it sad or just curious? In any case, it's a wonderful scene.
1754103758716.png

Another beautiful orb. Although, it's not very green for an attack called "Green Force".
1754103979002.png

awwwwwwwwwwwww
The Radiant Collection gave us wonderfully unique flavor text too. I'd love for them to do something like that again.
1754104291282.png

I love the Omastar in their cozy clearing adorned by junk. Such a mood.
1754104583251.png

Another beautiful rendition of fire breath. The sky is beautiful, the sparkles are beautiful, and I love the Braviary taking flight.
1754108772322.png

There are too few non-reprints in Evolutions for me to make a proper choice fine, here's Mewtwo
1754104880297.png

Cute guy. I like the faint glow around it. The dewdrops are very well placed.
1754105028687.png

Those eyes are chilling. The forest appearing to warp like that is a very good way to display the terrifying power of a Psychic-type.
1754105290551.png

so-taro started drawing cards around this time, their Glalie from last set only narrowly missing my list. They only drew 19 cards in total, but each of them is breathtaking.
1754105655642.png

Very cute card. I like how the Pokemon take up a good 5/6th of the art, that's quite a unique look and the Zoroark line pulls it off well here.
1754105915408.png

Jigglypuff's expression is perfect. Is it just me, or does this match the style of SM's official art really really well?
1754106230084.png

That is the look of a mon about to Exact Revenge. I'm such a kid, I see these flashy elemental effects and something lights up in my brain.
Fun fact: They reused this art next set for a Fighting-type Toxicroak that plays the exact same, except it avenges your Psychic-types. Brilliant design and I'm not sure there's been a situation quite like it.
1754106573499.png

This is my Ultra Beast bias speaking but I think that's an amazing way to draw poison, especially an otherworldly poison like Poipole's.
1754106702912.png

Beautiful view, I love all the colors of Minior you can see blurrily in the distance.
1754106822002.png

Like I said, these effects just do it for me. The trees in the background complete the piece quite well.
1754107017201.png

I have very fond memories of this one. Those "flames" are beautiful, yada yada
1754107284384.png

This is a good style for a Pokemon made of stardust, and I like how bright its eyes and mouth glow. Also, cute.
1754107481290.png

Unbroken Bonds has a lot of good choices. This one has just the right amount of red, and I love the feathers. The birds in the background are a nice touch, although I wish they were Murkrow.
1754107737533.png

Extremely charming.
1754107848513.png

Amidst all the reprints and 3d Pokemon-GX we have this stunning Clefairy art. The flowers made of light are an incredible choice and I adore whatever Clefairy's doing here.
1754108050603.png

This is one of the first cards by my favorite illustrator, AKIRA EGAWA, and it showcases two of the things I love most about her work: her cityscapes and her fire.
That was a lot. I found myself putting in more and more of the cute cards near the end of this batch. Maybe I just got self-conscious about choosing all the cool flashy action ones.

That set did that for a few other mons too, like Lucario.
It was an interesting idea, but they didn't do a lot with it.

Was fun to see how many picks we overlapped on, by the way.

What Lucario are you referring to? I'm not sure I see what you mean.

I was very close to picking Metapod and Thundurus, too.

My favorites of Gen 8
Sword & Shield

en_US-SWSH1-199-bede.jpg

Bede (Full Art). There were lots of good ones, but I really loved Bede’s card here. The colors and splashes with the pastel background of him at the top of a town really fits his posing here. Also like that the trainer backgrounds have like, actual background now.

Rebel Clash

en_US-SWSH2-073-morpeko.jpg

Morpeko. It would make sense that in the wild Morpeko would likely use Aura Wheel just to move around, huh? That’s clever, and I like how it’s depicted here. Weird the actual card doesn’t use the move.

Darknes Ablaze

en_US-SWSH3-008-karrablast.jpg

Karrablast. I had a three-way tie between this, Larvesta & Feebas but the sleepy just-waking-up feeling as the dawn rises and the morning mist clears won out in the end.

Champion’s Path

en_US-CP-027-lucario_v.jpg

Lucario V. I didn’t remember this set at all...seems like it was a Special set to just dump a bunch of Japanese promos/alt arts maybe? Oh well, I liked this Lucario a lot and “big” cards getting actual art is always a positive.

Vivid Voltage

en_US-SWSH4-032-wailord.jpg

Wailord. Seeing this in real life would probably be equal parts breathtaking and horrifying depending how close you are. This gets bonus points for sending a Wailmer flying

Shining Fates

en_US-SF-069-piers.jpg

Piers (Full Art). A mostly reprint set but with a bunch of new art. I love how happy a younger piers & his Linoone are and setting it in the locker room is cute. Good use of the “young piers” design we had from his league card.

Battle Styles

en_US-SWSH5-155-tyranitar_v.jpg

Tyranitar V (Art rare). I believe this is a chase card for the set and easy to see why. It’s drawn so cutely and seeing Tyranitar all sleepy and hanging out with others is very charming!

Chilling Reign

en_US-SWSH6-164-ice_rider_calyrex_v.jpg

Ice Rider Calyrex V (Art rare). There’s SO MANY good art rares this set, it was so hard to pick one. I had the Zeraora V for a while but the soft depiction of Calyrex providing an icy path for all the little Pokemon is so cute. & The lighting! (also I want to shoutout the weedle in this set which is doing sit ups)

Evolving Skies

en_US-SWSH7-175-glaceon_v.jpg

Glaceon V (Art rare). Oh what you thought I’d choose Moonbreon?? You are like baby. Look at this glaceon just lazing about on a bench in the afternoon, smiling at a flower starting to bloom amid melting snow, and maybe you’ll feel something.

Fusion Strike

en_US-SWSH8-176-impidimp.jpg

Impidimp. I went into this exacting once again to grab an excellent art rare (Genesect breakdancing) but then I saw this. It’s so damn cute wtf.

Brilliant Stars

en_US-SWSH9-TG012-oranguru.jpg

Oranguru (Trainer Gallery). I wanted to pick so many regular cards but then there was the trainer’s gallery??? God. You could make a top 10 out of this set alone. I liked the colorful “lazy sunday” vibe going on here so it won out but it was a REALLY TIGHT RACE.

Astral Radiance

en_US-SWSH10-TG009-mightyena.jpg

Mightyena (Trainer Gallery). This isn’t fair. You can’t just do this to me. Punks who love and spoil their pets?? And the cake? The expressions?? Get out of my sight.

Pokemon Go

en_US-PGO-056-aipom.jpg

Aipom. The Pokemon Go Experience, truly.

The only reason I’m not looking at the special Chinese-exclusive art is because keeping it to the English releases is simpler.

Lost Origin

en_US-SWSH11-TG009-spiritomb.jpg

Spiritomb (Trainer Gallery). The eerie lighting, depicting a “character” & side quest that would be easy to just never acknowledge again, the reflection in the window and of course the Spiritomb itself all come together wonderfully.

Silver Tempest

en_US-SWSH12-032-incineroar.jpg

Incineroar. Can’t choose a trainer gallery or full art if you just pull out as soon as you see the silly cat man lazing about in the sun of kukui’s lab! I really do adore this artwork.

Crown Zenith

en_US-CZ-GG064-melony.jpg

Melony (Art Rare). There’s wayyyyyyyyyyy too many good cards. Anyway. Snomlet.

Honestly....I should probably have just set a rule to not pick the full arts. This era went crazy. Maybe for Gen 9.

en_US-SWSH10-TG009-mightyena.jpg

Mightyena (Trainer Gallery). This isn’t fair. You can’t just do this to me. Punks who love and spoil their pets?? And the cake? The expressions?? Get out of my sight.
"I am cake!"
"Stupid best Pokemon is going to eat the stupid best cake... I wanted some."

Nothing's going to top this. Ever. <3

Honestly....I should probably have just set a rule to not pick the full arts. This era went crazy. Maybe for Gen 9.
You could do the best Full Art and best Non-Full Art.

swish
1754267581934.png

This is the first full art supporter I've chosen. Late Sun & Moon is where I feel full art supporters really picked up, with gems such as Giovanni's Exile and N's Resolve. Now in Sword and Shield we have physical backgrounds rather than patterns, which I like a lot.
1754268742710.png

Narrowly beating out Ninetales is this incredible Magmortar standing amidst an eruption. The huge brushstrokes add so much.
1754269048258.png

Staraptor is right in your face, as it should be! The mountains are stunning.
1754269180934.png

I love the contrast at play here. I also love the sense of motion all the diagonal lines give.
1754269389568.png

Coral is such a good prop. Wonderful bubbles, wonderful motion.
1754269575059.png

The best I've ever seen a Floatzel look. The sparkles are exquisite. I'm running out of adjectives
1754270067586.png
1754270097743.png

Starting in Battle Styles with the debut of SwSh's alt arts I will be selecting one main set card and one alt art.
This is a very tough-looking Electivire. The background's very gritty, and Electivire's mane is much longer and more jagged here than usual. Dangerous palm right at the camera is a cool look.
The scene Empoleon V finds itself in is very cute, very pretty, and a perfect fit for Battle Styles. I like Mienfoo's expression.
1754270678302.png
1754271139894.png

I may not understand what's happening in that pool of water, but Porygon2 looks very intent on understanding it. If you squint, Porygon2 looks like a 3d render, which is of course exactly the right look.

I haven't picked the more abstract ones much, but I like this Moltres. The grid of lines creating all the trees is a great choice. I like the gold, too.
1754271353132.png
1754271701550.png

It always amuses me when I get to put a (formerly) meta card on here. Between all the night skies, city lights, suns, moons, and glowing energy I've picked I'm pretty sure I just like lights. This card certainly has a lot of light in it, between Flaaffy's beautifully glowing mane, its tail, the stars in the background, and the crackling electricity.
Espeon V: Great concept, very cute, very cozy.
1754271863212.png

EGAWA's making some of these way too easy for me.
1754272237567.png
1754272436941.png

I always forget how much I like Meltan. Intriguing background, pretty sky.
This card shows off how cool Gigantamax Inteleon really is. It's really neat to see the pillars of light from all the Max Raid Dens around from a view high in the sky. A lot of these alt art Pokemon VMAX show one or more such beams, but this is among the best to me, right next to EVS Rayquaza VMAX.
1754272911515.png
1754273091943.png

Boss's Orders (Cyrus) is another card that just nails my personal tastes. It looks even better in holo.
The Trainer Gallery greatly expands the number of competitors in the alt art half, but this one's just a typical alt art. The colors are amazing, the lighting is sublime.
Funny that "Lumineon V, search for Boss" was a very common play.
1754273563588.png
1754273852258.png

This Overqwil has a good mix between cloudy poison and thick swirling poison. The bubbles are a really nice touch.
Those crystals do it for me. The Trainer Gallery gave Peony Ice Rider Calyrex and the player Shadow Rider Calyrex, which is interesting. The older one gets the slower form! or something
1754274159293.png
1754274233472.png

I didn't want to do another "wow, it's city, I like cities" but nothing else in GO jumped out at me so here's Spark. Wow, it's city, I like cities.
GO doesn't have many alt arts, so here's Mewtwo. Wow, it's city, I like cities.
1754274387111.png
1754274588931.png

Another easy EGAWA pick, moving on.
Eternatus is of course huge and imposing but the real star of the show here is Rose. That right there is a villain.
1754274762977.png
1754274940068.png

Ralts! Pretty flowers, pretty energy flowers, pretty architecture, pretty sky, I like how Ralts is glowing.
Even more city and even more light than ever before. My choices are getting rather predictable. Anyway, this scene is very Raihan.
They made the templating for Dragon-types really special in Sword and Shield. One aspect of this that I didn't notice until just now is that the left side of the weakness/resistance bar is the Dragon-type bronze.
1754275904058.png
1754276050973.png

I love the blue night sky in one corner (of course) and the red embers in the other. Baltoy is yet another Pokemon I did not know could look this good.
CRZ's Galarian Gallery is a ridiculously stacked lineup but my choice is the humble Deoxys. Deoxys breaking the rules by having all three fighting styles was already really funny and really thematic. Effortlessly floating upside down is always awesome, and it makes for such a cool effect. Untangling and crossing its arms such that each side is one color is a really creative pose that only Deoxys can do. Of course, the best part is all the Single Strike, Rapid Strike, and Fusion Strike items flying around it, which is the kind of TCG-specific reference I always adore.

Pokemon Go might have the biggest gulf between art in all the sets. The alt art situation is dire. I understand WHY they are the way they are but also they're just real bad
Conkeldurr EX is both a baffling pick and an even more baffling alt art.

Alright wrapping up my foray into all this art work with Gen 9
Scarlet & Violet

sv1_en_017-1.jpg

Tarountula (017). Doing the thing of picking both a regular art and an illustratoin rare! We don’t see Tarountula in the winter settings in Paldea so this is very unique and it looks both cute and sad! Poor little guy.

sv1_en_215.jpg

Riolu (Illustration Rare). There is sooooooo much good illustration rares but I fell in love with this one for the scenario and a little insight of what living with a tiny biped fighting puppy would be like. Namely: all the fun of a regular puppy. But strong.

Paldea Evolved

sv2_en_028.jpg

Paldean Tauros (Fire). Akira and dynamic fire name a more iconic combination.

sv2_en_259.jpg

Chi-Yu (Illustration Rare). All the Treasures of Ruin take the top slots by far but look at this! Look how gorgeous it is. The way the forest and foilage and light through the trees is already incredible, but the way it invokes the idea of being underwater without actually being underwater? Incredible.
Yes this is another Akira Egawa sue me.

Obsidian Flames

sv3_en_181.jpg

Lechonk (181). Komiya’s gotten so fascinatingly abstract, even for him, in the SV sets.

sv3_en_226.jpg

Geeta (Secret Illustration Rare). Geet’s a cool character and I love the mood this gives of her in presumably some down time.

Pokemon 151

sv3-5_en_142_std.jpg

Aerodactyl. Forgot about this card entirely, what a cool depiction of Aero terrorizing the past. Few people remember its ability to fire beams.

sv3-5_en_179_std.jpg

Mr. Mime (Illustration Rare). The amount of dedication for the trio here to properly mime out an entire chess game in a park also serves as a sign of the importance of a park having sitting space and space to just hang out. Do better, unnamed Kanto park.

Paradox Rift

sv4_en_138_std.jpg

Orthworm. This might sound silly, but doesn’t this kind of give illustratoin rare vibes? There’s just something about the simplicity of the background and pose, like I can imagine the full space where orthworm occupies a bit off center about it.

sv4_en_216_std.jpg

Iron Jugulis (Illustration Rare). Kind of like this, actually. Anyway I chose this one both because of the really unique city setting, but also how it feels like a cryptid sighting. It almost blends into the background but at the same time feels out of place; very fitting for a paradox.

Paldean Fates

sv4-5_en_062_std.jpg

Maschiff. This was mostly a reprint set, but had some new art and cards. I liked this one for actually making Maschiff kind of scary. Like yeah these would be pack hunters and mostly attack at night right? The lighting makes it look like they’re rushing into view of a flashlight. R.I.P.

Hey remember the greavard reveal that resulted in the guy dying

sv4-5_en_225_std.jpg

Palafin (Illustration Rare). Is it cliché to pick this? Perhaps. But it’s cliché for a reason.

Temporal Forces

Golurk. Fucking INCREDIBLE mood coloring here. Gentle, but sad.

sv5_en_207_std.jpg

Iron Boulder (Illustration Rare). The paradoxes in this set all have very unique art, trying to depict them in what would presumably be their “natural” environments. The environs for the future trio in particular get very abstract and unusual. This one stuck out to me the most, with the strange floating “platform” over th e forest, and the strange mountainside & forests & other platforms that spread all around the background.

Twilight Masquerade

sv6_en_091_std.jpg

Sandygast. I’ve not give nnearly enough love to Ito’s yarn models. I think even the shovel is yarn here.

sv6_en_180_std.jpg

Enamorus (Illustration Rare). What a unique style, it feels like we got a high quality screen cap of some anime’s fancy opening or maybe signature attack. Gives a lot of vibrancy to a kind of awkward Pokemon

Shrouded Fable

sv6-5_en_022_std.jpg

Sylveon. Cutely drawn, but very determined. Don’t usuallly see Sylveon depicted like this!

sv6-5_en_070_std.jpg

Dusknoir (Illustration Rare). James Turner’s art style is fantastic and rendering such a creepy sequence as this evolutoin line’s illustration rares is a great combo. How could I not choose this. He’s at the house. His hand is on the window. He’s coming in. If there’s ever a mega evolutoin….

Stellar Crown

sv7_en_117_std.jpg

Purugly. Extremely large cats doing normal cat poses just speaks to me. Go ahead. Rub the belly. It’s not a trap. You can trust that face.

sv7_en_171_std.jpg

Briar (Secret Illustration Rare). Obsession.

Surging Sparks

sv8_en_025_std.jpg

Volcarona. You ever see the thunderstoms that show up around erupting volcanoes?

sv8_en_209_std.jpg

Skarmory (Illustration Rare). Another very unique rendering, it feels kinda...Americana? And a big flex on Takumi Wada’s part. I bet this one is really nice in person.

Prismatic Evolutions

sv8-5_en_004_std.jpg

Budew. I, uh, lost track of what wasn’t a reprint in this set so I went with a safe pick. Thankfully, the art is really nice. Although I guess in universe this is the last thing you would want to run into!

sv8-5_en_158_std.jpg

Iron Crown ex (Illustration rare). The way the “clouds” are cutting across like a simulation breaking down makes for great composition. Gives me a kinda tanabata feel.

Journey Together

sv9_en_140_std.jpg

Oinkologne. Weird dog

sv9_en_170_std.jpg

Hop’s Wooloo (Illustration Rare). Chilling out with your real starter, probably feels nice.

Destined Rivals

sv10_en_080_std.jpg

Team Rocket’s Hypno. Uses the set’s “eerie red lighting in industrial areas” aesthetic in a great way; kinda feels like you’ve been captured and now being hypnotized.

sv10_en_187_std.jpg

Team Rocket’s Spidops (Illustration Rare). You wish you looked half as cool as this Spidops. Love the comic book feeling to the lines and colors, and using greens like this doesnt feel very common

Black Bolt

zsv10-5_en_064_std.jpg

Pawniard. I almost skipped over this, but after taking a closer look it’s pretty cute huh? Chilling at the river, and kind of feels like it’s thinking about how it cant really catch leaves with its blade hands.

zsv10-5_en_150_std.jpg

Unfezant (Illustration Rare). This one feels like a photographer captured a moment between Unfezant during nesting season doesnt it? I think it’s the out of focus leaves in the foreground. It’s sweet.

White Flare

rsv10-5_en_006_std.jpg

Deerling. Yay! Yippe!! Yahoo!!!

rsv10-5_en_154_std.jpg

Lillipup (Illustration Rare). You know I read those shoes being there like the kid just got home, but Lillipup has all that puppy energy and wants to go for walkies now.

Temporal Forces

lot of fantastic art in this gen especially. them tcg artists are p talented eh!

ah what the hey, here's my picks for Pocket.

most of Pocket's cards are reused artwork, but there is some original art mostly tied to missions........but also it's kind of annoying to cross check all of those so I'm just focusing on the art rares. I'm ignoring the Immersive Rares since they're pretty different; doesn't feel right to only look at the standard frame and doesn't feel right to compare "a movie" to regular cards. And there's only one per pack so even comparing them to each other is kind of whatever.

Genetic Apex

247-Ditto-Genetic-Apex.png

Ditto (1*). Chose this one because I love all the secret Dittos they added in. Take a close look, can you find them all?

Mythical Island

cPK_20_002450_01_MEWex_SAR-copy.jpg

Mew EX (2*). The casualness of Mew contrasting with what was probably an important ruin in the sun like this is real good. And cute! I actually have this one in game alongside the Aerodactyl from the same set; I basically never get these rarities otherwise.

Space-Time Smackdown

cPK_20_003800_01_MANYULAex_SAR.webp

Weavile EX (2*). God this set in particular I just kept going “oh that one, no that one, no THAT ONE”. But I settledo n this one because it’s so unique to show a Pokemon explicitly hunting another one like this and not as a gag (like with Magikarp). That Swinub is about to be torn to shreds. Beautifully drawn shreds.

Triumphant Light
cPK_20_004360_00_HELLGAR_AR.webp

Houndoom (1*). Things are about to go badly for you.

Shining Revelry

cPK_20_005630_01_PALDEADOOHex_SAR.webp

Clodsire EX (2*). The realistic styling here makes it feel like something out of a nature documentary. & the Wooper are so cute!

Celestial Guardians

cPK_20_005930_01_JUNAIPERex_SAR.webp

Decidueye EX (2*). between this and the houndoom maybe stop going outside into the forest at night

Extradimensional Crisis

cPK_20_007960_00_TEKKAGUYA_AR.webp

Celesteela (1*). Hey remember that thing I said I loved about Iron Jugulis’ art rare? Same applies double here. TV scan lines, like its a newscast! The Guzzlord captures a similar vibe, just seeing it on the rooftop while eating dinner.

Eevee Grove

cPK_20_008360_00_BRACKY_AR.webp

Umbreon (1*). TBH none of the art rares in this set felt “WHOAGH”. They’re nice, but not incredible. But still, I like this one the most. Love a city scape at night.

Wisdom of Sea and Sky

PK_20_009250_00.png

Ampharos (1*). In contrast all the art in this set is bangers. Just look at this….if this was a real card, I would seek it out.

I figure I might as well go through all the sets and find my favorite as well, it's fun to see others opinions on the matter

Base Set:
1755280909884.png

The aurora effect in the background of this card makes it an easy choice for me in a set where a lot of the cards end up just featuring the pokemon in generic action poses, shout outs to Electrode for doing really well with its background, having the whole spectrum of colors

Jungle:
1755281293545.png

The imagery of Eevee in a flowery field chasing the butterflies really stood out to me, there's probably a bit of bias in here due to me actually owning this card as one of my first, but it's my list so i can do that anyway

Fossil:
1755281688778.png

The whole background really just speaks to me, the moon shining down over everything and the waste barrel the grimer is sat next to, it really makes for a world that feels lived in when compared to a lot of the other cards in the set

Team Rocket:
1755282241494.png

Dark Dugtrio burrowing into a house presumably so that Team Rocket can take anything they'd need from it works for me, I tend to really like the cards that can tell a story. Honorable mentions would go to like 5 different cards, but i'll say Dark Dragonair, and Porygon both really worked for me as well

Gym Heroes:
1755282824674.png

It really just looks imposing, exactly like how i'd expect a pokemon owned by someone like Lt Surge to look.

Gym Challenge:
1755283661640.png

Seeing the pokemon mid-evolution is something I wouldn't expect from the TCG, and I think it works really well here

Neo Genesis:
1755284610023.png

It is honestly the perfect embodiment of Quagsire. friendly, derpy.

Neo Discovery:
1755285594029.png

The sky in the background looks really pretty, the action pose for Yanma looks nice

Southern Islands:
1755285844463.png

I'll be including the mini/special sets whenever i find an Artwork that i particularly like or feel is worth including. Which probably means all of them, the art in the tcg tends to be quite good. In this case, the Tentacruel is pretty simple, but seeing the Dragonite in the background is a really nice touch and i quite like just the hint of the island in the background as well.

Neo Revelation
1755287077682.png

The comic book-like art style really pops, and Sneasel acting all innocent standing around like this fits the type of behavior a dark type would have for me

Neo Destiny:
1755287638162.png

The shading on Dark Ariados is perfect for making it look intimidating, and thats exactly what a Dark Pokemon should look like to me. Background isn't anything special but in this case I don't think it needs to be, the pokemon itself and the shadow it casts into the background work really well to make the art stand out

Expedition Base Set:
1755288355979.png

The shadowed look of the Feraligatr as it swims toward the camera makes for a really striking pose, I don't think i could choose anything else for this set.

Aquapolis:
1755289505271.png

First off, oh my god i could've chosen this entire set for this there is so much good art, but i'm limiting myself to just this and an honorable mention for later. First off, the Kingdra, the posing is phenomenal, I love the ruins seen in the background, and it kinda reminds me of an early mission in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs where the MC has to get their capture styler back from a wild Kingdra. It wins in all of the Pokemon's art, the Background art, and even just personal bias for me.

For the honorable mention in the set, I'd give it to the Umbreon card. Crossing the rooftops in the middle of the night makes for a great setpiece and and art itself just looks beautiful like the rest of the set, only reason it loses out to the Kingdra is because of the aforementioned personal bias.

Skyridge:
1755290739241.png

Another set with an insane amount of good art, but Electrode wins it out for me. Another case of a comic book-esque artstyle making the pokemon stand out, with the rain and lightning surrounding it as well as the creepy castle looking building in the background really adding to the art. Electrode looking stressed to the point of being about to explode is the icing on the cake

Honorable mention to the Yanma in the set for having what I think is meant to be a homage to the Nazca Lines in the image of Ho-Oh in the background. I love that detail.

Wizards Black Star Promos:
1755291215158.png

The posing makes Ho-Oh look really majestic, and the rainbow in the background helps make the art shine.

Bit late to this one but here are my SV era choices
1755405231006.png
1755405525708.png

Drifloon: This is a card I'm happy sees play, because the lighting here is very, very nice. I like the pose too.
Toedscool: Toedscool makes this cool scene just the right amount of goofy. The white background adds a lot, it helps the colors pop.
1755405768372.png
1755406510746.png

Sableye: Happy lil guy. Bright lights against a dark background will always catch my eye. The crystal on the left and the cluster on the right are drawn pretty differently, but both look amazing.
Chi-Yu ex: One of my favorites of all time. The intense orange lighting makes the forest look awash with flame, and also communicates Chi-Yu's great power like the legendary it is.
1755408204243.png
1755408500714.png

Kingambit: Light green and dark pink make a wonderful pair. The water's very pretty, too, and it all creates a beautiful scene for Kingambit to station itself in.
Charizard ex: I wish I could see this one without text, because I do think it gets very busy in the lower half, and the text certainly doesn't help. That said, I'm in love with EGAWA's take on Terastallization. Those wings are positively iridescent.
1755408946039.png
1755409146754.png

Omastar: Omastar is here for how it builds upon the same set's Omanyte art. The pink lighting and the seaweed are the perfect choices to imply Omastar's heightened power.
Poliwhirl: This is just pure beauty, what else can I say, it's beautiful.
1755409431299.png
1755409559040.png

Gourgeist: Beautiful glowing flowers. Hand over your soul.
Espathra: EGAWA outdoes herself yet again. The deep blue sky, the swirling magic and sand, the brilliant sunrise. The lines in the sand are the perfect touch.
1755409810060.png
1755409910295.png

Gimmighoul: Cute. The light from the window providing the only color in the scene is a really cool effect.
Charizard ex: Sorry for being basic, but here's another Charizard. I love how it mirrors the OBF one without copying anything or losing any uniqueness.
1755410270456.png
1755410429825.png

Iron Thorns: I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else, but to me, this kind of shading and coloring screams "space". That is of course exactly the right look for a Paradox Pokemon of the distant future.
Iron Crown ex: All of this set's Paradox Pokemon have amazing SIRs, but Iron Crown is my favorite. It and Iron Leaves ex play very neatly with a huge moon in the background, so I'm a bit disappointed Iron Boulder ex didn't go a similar route. Anyway, there's some nice juxtaposition between the Pokemon's robotic body and the almost arcane-looking trees.
1755410920151.png
1755411280804.png

Milotic: Like the Drifloon, this Milotic is by Taira Akitsu, who is very good at this kind of serene pale background. The faint bubbles are a great choice.
Sinistcha ex: Beautiful, beautiful coloring. The green of the matcha stands out so well.
1755411424077.png
1755411593640.png

Rowlet: It's Rowlet. Ergo, it's cute.
Munkidori ex: This would already be my favorite on its own, but what elevates it even more is that the rest of the Loyal Three and Pecharunt share the same style. The big difference is that with the puppeteer, Pecharunt, the chains are a bright purple instead of being hidden in shadow. Good symbolism or something. Of the four, I chose Munkidori, because you see the chains the most and I love blue lighting.
1755411883815.png
1755412066614.png

Turtonator: Some more wonderfully vibrant fire from EGAWA. The jagged rocks in the background are quite unique.
Hydrapple ex: Cool theme on this one. Great execution, too. The colors work perfectly.
1755412273212.png
1755412825750.png

Paldean Tauros: Once again, I love the color pallate. Taiga Kasai often draws big sections with the same tone to great effect. With Tauros's glowing horns, I think it creates an amazing effect.
Skarmory: Pretty. The Skarmory is aggressively chrome, which I think is a fitting look for one of the oldest Steel-types.
1755413071944.png
1755413287690.png

Budew: I've made a post about this art. It's very nice and fits Budew very well, and I like how the art displays the pollen it's going to lock you out of the game with.
Flareon ex: I don't like that I like this card. I wish I could shun all the Eevees as decent cards pumped to the moon and back by the damn investors, their ridiculous artificial value owed only to the expectation that "Eevees are the chase cards". I mean, that's obviously true, but unfortunately the art is also really, really good. The rainbow border on Stellar Teras adds a lot to a lot of these SIRs.
1755413990294.png
1755414111641.png

Bombirdier: I don't like Bombirdier as a Pokemon, but this one looks great. For the thousandth time: nice color palate.
Wailord: This is an amazing way to show off Wailord's gargantuan size. Even the sun and mountains are made to look tiny.
1755414255988.png
1755414350594.png

Team Rocket's Zubat: Even a Zubat looks menacing under Team Rocket's command. The red tinge is nice, as are the light pouring down from above and the vast swarm on all sides.
Team Rocket's Moltres ex: Yeah.
1755414484296.png
1755414647976.png

Servine: The light's great and I like how it's concentrated behind Servine's head. The ivy looks beautiful.
Sandile: It's so cool to show under the sand like this. Really unique stuff.
1755414773286.png
1755414917851.png

Ferrothorn: I like the way it's just hanging straight down. The dull and mossy look of the stone fits Ferrothorn well.
Sewaddle: Those are some incredibly vibrant colors on display, all for the little Sewaddle to marvel at. I love the wonder in its eyes.
Skarmory (Illustration Rare). Another very unique rendering, it feels kinda...Americana?
Right, that's the word. I was trying to describe the aesthetic and gave up. The overall style, the chrome look of Skarmory's body, and the cars all help bring this out.
