Pokemon Scarlet & Violet - 18th Nov 2022! **OFFICIAL INFO ONLY**

If I had to guess, I think the shift to code cards (approximately around gen 6) was probably done so people wouldn't have to keep dragging their systems in to download it + not wanting to let employees pilfer the download carts. I do recall one store back during this hey day who didn't like people loitering around too, lmao.
The point is that why do we even need to physically go to stores. Why can't we just go online to grab the Mystery Gift or whatever they're calling it now?

And don't say "what about NSO" because I'm pretty sure you could implement a way to distribute gifts without needing players to buy into the online subscription. Nintendo did make NSO free for a year when the Switch launched, and you don't need NSO to access the eShop.

This whole thing is a problem of their own making.

You could always have asked that ever since wi-fi was a thing and the answer is usually akin to "you want to have extra incentives to the people stocking, selling and advertising your game, TCG and other merchandise". There's probably various boring behind the scenes deals that come from stuff like this.

Toys R Us in particular went nuts for this, I recall large signage and some events would specifically kit out the game area to emphasize pokemon products around where you could pick up the distribution signal (or, in the GBA era, the trade stations).

This part's kind of irrelevant to this conversation for this considering you have to redeem a code online anyway, but, for the record, I think that when it comes to Mystery Gift it doesn't require NSO. Like I think anyone right now could go online and redeem their shiny raidon code alongside picking up the shiny treasures of ruin.
NSO is required for stuff like trading, battling and raids.

I mean figured as much but like. Why GameStop of all places. Are they really that valuable of a partner such that TPCi needs to cater to them at the expense of the players.

You already don't need NSO to get Mystery Gifts. The only things you need NSO for in the Switch Pokémon games are online battles, online trades, online raids (and only to do them with other people, you can still download event raids without NSO), and using the Union Circle online. None of the actual events are locked off without NSO.

iirc a bunch of old in-person distributions were done via kiosks or whatnot where you downloaded the gift on site and it didn't have a restriction as to how many people could interact with it. It was still a limited time thing but you just had to show up within the timeframe (which was usually more than a day) to guarantee the gift. It's crazy how it's somehow gotten worse for accessibility despite Nintendo making their handhelds able to connect online because GameStop is desperately clinging onto relevance.

Hey, anyone remember Pokemon Pass? (I still have it on my phone...)

Yeah, it'd be nice if this generated enough bad PR for TPCi that they stopped doing this limited code nonsense. Both of the gamestops closest to me are closed down. Not that it would have mattered since I wouldn't have been able to get to either at opening. For Eternatus, Gamestop similarly ran out of cards pretty quickly, but I was able to get a relative in Canada to go to EB games and get a code card for me. This time even EB games ran out immediately.

Maybe by the shiny legendary distribution in gen 10 GameStop will finally be out of business and TPCi will just give up on trying to entice people into brick-and-mortar stores that don't have any other Pokemon merch to buy anyways because scalpers bought it all too.

So fortunately for me… there are 4 EB Games stores in my area (Newcastle, Australia). I only went to 2 on Friday, One about 10 mins after opening and the other 20-30 mins later. Both times I actually saw them opening the plastic around the set of cards. Looked like there were about 50 for each store. I also checked with both stores and they were firm on one per customer, which was nice. I did originally plan to go to all four to help out some people online but ended up having to go home due to being called into work.

It really does seem silly though. This would’ve been perfect as a raid to cap off S/V right before ZA, no? We’re almost completely past physical game cards at this point, why do we need a physical code? Feel real sorry for people not in the correct countries or whose stores gave cards out early or many to a single person.

It'd be nice... except it won't and everyone'll have forgot about the incident in a week

Something that makes this even worse is if you have both games, you can't get both Shinies in theory because codes are one use and one per customer. In practice, scalpers and/or uncaring Game Stop employees... -_-

I'm still mad about not getting Zarude because of signing up for the news letter not working. Also, Every Legendary being Shiny Locked in SV gives me the feeling this might be the ONLY time it may be possible to get Shiny Koridon and Miridon. Collectors are going to keep being reminded by the gaps in their collections for a really long time.

They should at least be available through Pokemon GO in 3-4 years, assuming of course that the game and/or global economy lasts that long.

Gamestop have confirmed that there is a restock of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Shiny Koraidon & Miraidon codes at stores across the US starting today. Unlike the code cards at the start of the event, these are printed on receipts but there is said to be a per-store limit.
In addition to this, EB Games in Canada has also confirmed that a restock of codes is coming.
These codes are available until October 15th 2025 while supplies last

The squeaky wheel gets the oil!

THOUGH I'm going to hold off full celebrations until I make my attempt tomorrow. I would have gone today had I known this was happening.

I just got back from obtaining my code, it is indeed printed on a receipt and didn’t require a purchase. The Gamestop employee asked for my account phone number first and I thought for sure I was about to be denied a code, but saying “I don’t have one” was fine and the code was printed. Good luck to everyone else in the U.S. who tries to get one!

Well, here we are again. I didn't think I'd be writing in a second ticket, but seeing how things are going I decided to write in again. I do so not out of malice, but out of frustration.

First, thank you for listening to everyone and deciding to generate more codes (see, I knew you could do it) and distributing them via receipt print ups. By the time I heard of the second run it was the afternoon and I had already gone out to do errands, but I figured I'd go to my local GameStop the next day just as it opened (being it was a Sunday this mean 11 am). And I did, they had opened just 10 minutes before I arrived and a handful of people were in it.

So I got on line, but just before I got to the counter the person in front of me asked about the codes. And the employee told him they were out. I spoke up, saying that a new batch of codes were sent out and were being printed on receipts. The employee said those were the codes they're out of, they gave most of them out yesterday and only had a few left today; what I missed was when they opened up there was a big line of people however many of them went home empty-handed after the first few got the last codes. Then, when I got home, I read some articles & forums about people who either got lucky & got one or were like me & didn't and learned each GameStop only got an additional 50 codes.

So I want to quickly mention the two mistakes you made:

1. SHADOW DROPPING THE RESTOCK: Why did you not make an announcement you were sending out restocks until you did? When I got the news I was already done with my day, I foolishly thought that instead of rushing out to GameStop just before it closed I could wait until it opened tomorrow, surely they would make sure there was enough codes this time. I heard from a friend that also went to his GameStop the next day, he was told they ran out of codes on the day of the restock! And our story isn't unique, many of us may have had gotten our codes if we only knew they were coming. Of course, us getting a code just means someone else didn't because...

2. YOU ONLY GENERATED 50 MORE CODES: Day 1. DAY ONE. All the codes were gone. You knew that for most GameShops, especially those in big cities (hello from Queens, New York), not only ran out of codes on the first day but it was within an HOUR of opening! And there were a lot more people who didn't get a code than did. So why, when generating more codes, codes which were being printed on receipts so you didn't need to make a special card for them, did you only make 50 PER GameStop! You've should have generated like 1000, 500 if you want to be conservative, per GameStop; Maybe even more for GameStops in big cities!

So, the question is, what now? Being we still have two weeks of this event I guess there's enough time to do a third restock via receipts: This time please announce the day you're doing it and generate at least 500 if not more codes per GameStop (I promise, this time I'll be on line before the store opens).

Of course what would be better is if you just did a online distribution (to change it up you could have it be the correct Shiny Box Legendary instead of swapping them for no reason). Or, for at least the people who pre-ordered Pokemon Legends: Z-A from your own online store, could maybe drop a code in our package as a bonus when you deliver them in a few weeks. Like, I know those of us who did are getting a cute plush of one of the Starters, but an additional bonus is always nice, especially one so easy to generate (note that since we ordered the game through your store that meant we didn't with GameStop thus missing out on the in-game trench coat).

Finally, if you're going to do something similar again in the future (please don't, just do online distributions), may I suggest something: Bring back the Pokemon Pass. Yeah, remember that app from 2019 you had us get and released a few events for? While we still had to go to the store, at the very least as long as we had a Trainer Club account we were guaranteed a code when we scanned the QR code they had set up; didn't even need to talk with the employee at the counter. Looking back it was pretty convenient, you should think about updating it and trying again; people will probably cheer for its return after the mess of this event.

To the person reading this, thank you. My anger and frustration isn't toward you as I know you're just a customer support rep thus have nothing to do with event distribution. However, if you could, sending someone part of event distribution my suggestions would be appreciated; I sincerely think my suggestions would be helpful. And I know I'm probably going to receive an automated response, it's fine, if you do I won't make a response back. Have a good day.

However, an odd thing happened when I submitted it.

I noticed that the Status of the ticket was already "Solved". Huh.

I then checked my email, and the few seconds I sent that Ticket they already sent me an automated response.

WOW. Just wow. How much of a F*** UP this event is that they're pre-prepping response emails! Response emails that are not helpful at all of course, they just link you to the details of the event on the Pokemon website. I was debating sending them a new round of articles and videos about not only people still not getting the code but also GameStop pointing the finger at the Pokemon Company for not providing enough codes; I guess they don't need it if they're doing this:

Seriously, whose bright idea was to have them be so limited? They managed to send in enough before. This can't just be all scalpers. Why didn't they send out enough this time?

What also didn't help was on the same day, not only was it the release date of the Pokemon TCG Mega Evolutions set, but several other TCGs were releasing new sets (notably Yu-Gi-Oh!: Doom of Dimensions and Magic: The Gathering - Spider-Man Collection). So already, and let's not mix words here, scalpers were front and center ready to buy up all the TCG cards and a limited time & supply free promo for the games was just icing on the cake.

Grab as many TCG cards as you can (don't leave any for the kids), swipe a free Shiny Pokemon promo or two, put it all up on eBay or whatever reseller site they use, and wait for your scummy money to come in. Welcome to the Scalper Economy.
