Pokémon GO

I've been tracking them for a while and I find the 2025 release schedule very interesting compared to 2024 & even 2023

For reference, 2023 released 56 Pokemon
2023 TOTAL: 56
-Jan 7 - 1 (Kecleon)
-Feb 27 - 2 (Gimmighoul line)
-March 1 - 1 (Hawlucha)
-March 8 - 1 (Bruxish)
-March 11 - 1 (Regidrago)
-April 4 - 2 (Cutiefly line)
-April 9 - 1 (Regieleki)
-April 20 - 3 (Bounsweet line)
-May 2 - 2 (Larvesta line)
-May 6 - 1 (Kleavor)
-June 6 - 2 (Sandygast line)
-June 21 - 1 (Carbink)
-June 29 - 1 (Turtonator)
-July 15 - 1 (Komala)
-July 20 - 1 (Zygarde)
-Aug 4 - 1 (Diancie)
-Aug 11 - 1 (Passimian) [23]
-Sep 5 - 11 (Gen 9 starters, Lechonk line)
-Sep 10 - 9 (assorted Gen 9)
-Oct 7 - 2 (Skiddo line)
-Oct 12 - 3 (Smoliv line)
-Oct 19 - 2 (Greavard line)
-Nov 5 - 1 (Clodsire)
-Nov 7 - 2 (Tadbulb line)
-Dec 18 - 2 (Cetoddle line)
-Dec 23 - 1 (Wyrdeer)

To that point the only year that released less Pokemon was 2021 (48). But it's a very nickle & dime release schedule. And yet, a trove of riches compared with 2024 which released 40
2024 TOTAL: 40
-Jan 19 - 1 (Annihilape)
-Jan 27 - 2 (Varoom line)
-Feb 5 - 1 (Drampa)
-Feb 14 - 1 (Enamorus)
-March 1 - 1 (Poipole)
-March 5 - 3 (Charcadet line)
-April 22 - 2 (Wiglett line) [11]
-May 23 - 3 (Naganadel, Stakataka, Blacephalon)
-May 30 - 2 (Necrozma, Marshadow)
-July 17 - 2 (Tandemaus line) [18]
-Sep 3 - 13 (Gen 8 starters, Dreepy line, Stonjourner)
-Sep 18 - 3 (Hatenna line)
-Oct 22 - 1 (Morpeko)
-Nov 16 - 2 (Toxel line)
-Nov 27 - 1 (Cursola)
-Dec 3 - 2 (Sinistea line)

And the bulk of that number comes from the Gen 8 drop. It's very thin otherwise.

Meanwhile 2025 to this point has already released 23 Pokemon (24 counting Volcanion since we know when that's coming)
2025
-Jan 3 - 2 (Fidough line)
-Jan 15 - 2 (Shroodle line)
-Jan 21 - 3 (Rookidee line)
-Feb 11 - 1 (Dhelmise)
-March 5 - 1 (Kubfu [Untransferrable])
-March 19 - 2 (Nickit line)
-March 26 - 2 (Sizzlipede line)
-March 31 - 2 (Mudbray line)
-April 9 - 2 (Gossifleur line)
-April 16 - 3 (Tinkatink line)
-April 24 - 3 (5) (Applin line [Dipplin & Hydrapple Home only])
-Go Fest - 1 (Volcanion)

I added a few points above around july/august showing how many mons had come out respectively; we've blown past July 2024 and are at the same number (exceeding, technically) as August 2023. They've released a new Pokemon almost every week -february was the most barren so far-. It's very peculiar since the drip feed felt very purposeful considering the number of Pokemon they have left to release.

It's possible it's just them reflecting on the drip feed complaints, but the cynic in me wonders if it's just a way to juice revenue for the buy out + trying to keep people on board during the transition to Scopely. I'll be curious if this continues the rest of the year
So now that we're done with August , I thought I could do another checkin.

-May 10 - 1 (Kingambit)
-June - 1 (Urshifu)
-Go Fest - 1 (Volcanion)
-June 20 - 2 (Yamper line)
-July 15 - 1 (Tatsugiri)
-July 22 - 3 (Honedge line)
-July 29 - 2 (Toedscool line)
-August 6 - 2 (Snom line)
-August 18 - 1 (Eternatus [cannot be transferred])
-August 25 - 1 (Dondozo)

May was like February, just kind of a dead month. June, July & August however all had 3 lines added, though in all it's still less than the first four months along had (23 vs 14). Still that puts us at 37 and we already know Indeedee is coming September 16 and that this season will bring Duraludon, Dipplin, Hydrapple, & the Impidimp line for the Wild Area. That alone puts us at 44 and there will presumably be a few other releases (ala Indeedee) this season and we'll definitely get some more for December. Likely it wont break 2023's amount but probably get close to 50 depending on what they decide to release. =

And some people think Sinistcha & Poltchageist might come this season too since there was some matcha props in the trailer. I'd say halloween but they released their OG counterparts in December last year so ??

Meanwhile, once the announced ones are out...
Gen 4 is still waiting on Phione, Manaphy & Arceus. I strongly suspect that Arceus will be treated like Eternatus in terms of power.
Gen 6 is now complete thanks to Volcanion & Honedge. Home, however, still can't fill in all the slots due to Zygarde being untransferrable. Z-A should force their hands on this and make them release more Zygardes, though. Probably why it's in the anniversary art.
Gen 7 still lacks 9 Pokemon: Wishiwashi, Pyukumuku, Minior, the ever waiting Mimikyu, Type Null/Silvally, Magearna & Zeraora. Type Null I think will be a season long research thing and hwo they decide to handle Silvally's forms will reflect on how they'll handle Arceus. We've all the UBs so it's posible they make us wait for these until they decide to do Ultra Necrozma. Who knows how long that'll be.
Gen 8's made good progress. Only 28 remain after Impidimp is out. I assume that Calyrex & the horses will be the centerpiece of a Go Fest. Maybe next year? Very unfortuante for me, Eternatus being a one-off gift Pokemon means you can't transfer it ala Zygarde. Who knows when they decide to release a second one.
Hisui is still only missing Basculegion. Cosnidering this season's gimmick is transformation, I think we can see it happen this year. White Stripe's been waiting for ages now.
Paldea, predictably, is missing a lot. 32 regular Pokemon; 3 of those are evolutions for Archaludon, Farigiraf & Dudunsparce. 34 legendary pokemon. The anniversary did tease paradoxes, perhaps we could start seeing those later in the year? Could also see Cyclizar as a prelude to the raidons.

I live on the eastern side of the Meridean line but work on the western side, so I've been accustomed to seeing the different forms of Shellos (still hunting the shiny blue form...) but noticed on Tuesday that blue Shellos was spawning near my workplace. Reddit seemed to confirm they'd swapped...

...until I saw the blue one by my house today, where it shouldn't (now) be.

So are both forms spawning worldwide now?

0h I just noticed a go thread cool. Can any mon have full red(hundo?) I mostly ask cause I have a mellan 1 Alice off hundo. Not sure if I should go back to using mystery box every few days. I mean even if I can improve it 1 point might just forego that but...good to know I guess.

I think the only Pokemon that can't roll a 100% are Shadow pokemon (I think those can only ever be 97% which purifies into a 100%?). So you can just keep rolling meltans.

you can get 100% Shadow Pokemon, I have two of them.

Everything can be 100%, some mons you only have one or two shots at (most mythicals, Zygarde for now) but if you get the 1/216 you're a winner

O ok. Ty! Yeah I've gotten fully perfect shadow twice or so too. I've caught thousands of meltan I think but IDK maybe I do more for a bit at least today...

Edit: anyone also know if you ever NEED an elite To teach some move? Or can you just keep retrying with regular tms?

Moves distributed during events need an elite. Those are usually marked with an asterisk or something in databases/guides.

Ty too. I think the update in oct. will be good, I see the tasks for 41-50 will remove for instead 71-80, but in 46 in level. So I've done plenty of tasks, after update do I get anything or did I unwittingly waste time Kinda? I mean it'd be fine if I did but I'd rather get a reward. IDK, it hasn't happened and I'll know when it does and can't change it by knowing...oh I'm bored I'm just always working these days so posting a ton in oi cause i play less reg Mona stuff(well none hör now I mean, gen got to me.)

they say you'll shoot up in level depending on how much EXP you've already earned, but we dont have a frame of reference for how far the level increase will be going. I'd imagine if you're mid level 40s you'll probably be reaching high 50s or low 60s by the time the update happens

At level 70 now, going to take my sweet time with main account making it to 80. Looks like I won't be able to spin any pokestops unless I do a raid using up my free passes until I have less items than max allows. Therefore I won't be sending gifts to friends I'm already lucky with for awhile.

I'm not looking forward to the following tasks:
catching 200 pokemon in a single day, which may require using incense or being in a location with lots of spawns
7 days in a row doing a route. I live near lots of routes as I'm concerned a bad weather day may force me indoors

I cant remember how much bag space i had but I went up to 800 and unfortunately this was not enough because 15 levels from 40 to 55 resulted in me going to 1564 items.

There's just...so many of these things...

Actually same here LOL, i had 800 and went up to 950 but was with 1500 itens

Well, the jump from 44 to 67 has left me with 3000ish/1750 items, so I guess these new daily eggs are handy because I won't be spinning any stops for a long time.

I had enough xp to get to 45 but I didn't start on the requirements soon enough to beat enough rocket leaders to level up.

I mean, I just immediately dumped all additional potions/revives/balls. Thankfully I had five Pokemon currently in a gym when the update went live, so could immediately dump about 100 berries on them. A couple of 30-minute cycles later and I was basically at the point where my bag was usable again - I also did a couple of Mossy Lure catching sessions last night as I was just shy of the desired amount of Syrupy Apples, which helped immensely.

The additional Pokemon storage is greatly appreciated, I'm currently holding onto about 80 Applin I want to trade for additional candy. Once those are gone and I've done a clearout of all the other junk I've caught and not yet released, I'll have about 250-300 empty slots. Won't need to buy any for a while.

Also nice to get a free Master Ball! That was a fun surprise, I was literally just thinking that it's been forever since one was available.

Mentioned the evolution method for a certain Pokemon in this game in a different thread and it set me off thinking... evolution methods in Pokemon Go are so weirdly inconsistent. Back when it was just the original 151 the designers understandably didn't want to make evolution requirements too complex so questline evolutions only really became a thing from Gen II onwards, but there's a bunch of Pokemon for whom they're applied and yet numerous others which you'd expect to have one but don't.

Pokemon requiring walking to evolve
  • Happiny, Mime Jr, Bonsly - all require walking a certain distance as your buddy before evolution is possible. These three baby Pokemon all have a certain requirement before they can evolve (the former needing to hold an item, the latter two needing to know a specific move) so this questline forms a rough approximation of "expending some effort".

  • Woobat - requires walking 1km to evolve into Swoobat. This forms a rough approximation of gaining friendship with a Pokemon in the main series (though surely a certain threshold of buddy hearts would be nearer the mark?) but strangely is one of the only Pokemon for which this is the case: Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, Azurill, Budew, Chingling, Munchlax, Riolu, Chansey, Buneary, Swadloon, and Alolan Meowth all require friendship to evolve in the MSG and yet evolve the standard way.

  • Eevee - requires walking 10km to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon. Again, this roughly equates to the friendship requirement needed for Espeon and Umbreon - both evolutions also depend on the real-world clock, with Espeon evolving during the day and Umbreon during the night. Sylveon simply requires a (large) amount of buddy hearts for its evolution rather than walking.

  • Feebas - a weird one, since Milotic requires the beauty mechanic to evolve which obviously doesn't exist in Go. Really they should have just gone with the Prism Scale but I suspect they wanted Milotic to require a lot of effort to obtain, so they made it require 20km of walking instead. Thanks, I hate it.

Pokemon with a specific evolution quest:
  • Pancham - catch 32 Dark-type Pokemon. This is a pretty fun approximation of the way in which it evolves in the MSG, with 32 being a reference to the minimum level it evolves at.

  • Spritzee and Slurpuff - doing these together as they often come as a pair. Obviously in the MSG these two have their own evolution items, but it seems like they probably didn't want to have to go to the trouble of creating numerous different items only one Pokemon could use after Gen II as that's the only roster to have ever received unique evolution items - Gen IV and V just used the Sinnoh and Unova stones for everything. That and the existing mechanics they used (use an incense for Spritzee and feed x amount of berries for Slurpuff) fit them pretty well.

  • Floette - for some reason, requires 20 buddy hearts to evolve into Florges. It evolves with a Shiny Stone in the MSG, which doesn't exist in Go, but the way that's handled is inconsistent: all Sinnoh and Unova lines for which the same is true require a Sinnoh or Unova stone respectively (or the use of a Lure Module in some cases), but while Doublade, Cetoddle, and Galarian Darumaka require a Dusk Stone or an Ice Stone to evolve in the MSG they only require candy to evolve in Go.

  • Galarian Slowpoke - catch 30 Poison- or Psychic-types depending on the evolution path. Again, these two have their own item so this method is a relatively accessible midpoint, given that Poison and Psychic are both pretty common types.

  • Poipole - catch 20 Dragon-types with this as your buddy. As Poipole is currently a one-time only Pokemon, the steepness of the quest feels justified (but there was a Dragon community day at the end of the season Poipole was introduced in anyway, so most people would have been able to complete this).

  • Galarian Farfetch'd - make 10 excellent throws with this as your buddy. Kind of a random requirement but fits the general idea of being "lucky" since the MSG requires landing three critical hits in one battle - struggling to think what battle requirements would have worked better than this, since "win 3 battles/raids with x as your buddy" is trivially easy. I think this one's pretty cool.

  • Galarian Yamask & Hisuian Qwilfish - win 10 raids with this as your buddy. Doing these together as they have the same quest. Pretty generic but both of their evolution methods in the MSG are so ridiculously convoluted there was no hope of translating that in a way most people could easily do.

  • Hisuian Sneasel - walk 7km with this as your buddy. Much like its Johtonian form, it requires an item to evolve in the MSG but a Sinnoh Stone wouldn't have worked here for obvious reasons. In line with the MSG, it also only evolves into Sneasler at night.

  • Kubfu - win 30 raids or max battles (specifically either against a Water- or Dark-type boss) with this as your buddy. Again, as it's a one-time legendary the steepness of the quest feels justified, as painful as it may be.

  • Charcadet - defeat 30 Psychic- or Ghost-type Pokemon with this as your buddy. Much like Slowpoke, it's a stand-in for two unique items. Looks a lot more difficult than it is, it's fairly easy to do and is just annoyingly time-consuming rather than anything else.

  • Primeape - defeat 30 Ghost- or Psychic-type Pokemon with this as your buddy. Annihilape doesn't require an item in the MSG but has a fairly complex evolution requirement, so this more or less approximates that.

  • Dipplin - catch 7 Dragon-type Pokemon with this as your buddy. Why 7 specifically I've no idea, considering it already needs 400 candy to evolve, but it's not a bruisingly high number. Even if there's not an event with Dragon spawns, it's fairly easy to do if there's a Dragon in raids.

Time-based evolutions: Eevee, Tyrunt, Amaura, Rockruff, Yungoos, Fomantis, Snom, and Greavard all follow the MSG in having a time restriction on when they can evolve, with Snom additionally requiring 10 buddy hearts. However, Gligar, Johtonian Sneasel, Budew, Happiny, Chingling, Riolu, Alolan Rattata, and Galarian Linoone all also have a time restriction on when they can evolve in the MSG but not in Go.

In the MSG, Cubone can only be evolved into Alolan Marowak in the nighttime, but as the ability to evolve Cubone into Alolan Marowak was only available for about a week during one event it makes sense they didn't further restrict it. Why there can't just be an Alola Stone I don't know, it's certainly been long enough.

Pokemon which evolve randomly
  • Wurmple - obvious really, follows the main series in having a branched evolution the player cannot control.

  • Clamperl - also has a branched evolution, with the choice being entirely random. This one is the weirdest to me as it's very much not a random evolution in the MSG: there's no corresponding item in Go but literally no way to influence it at all. Really odd (and frustrating) decision.

  • Cherubi - only has one evolution, but which form it evolves into is random and cannot be changed afterwards. There was a lot of debate when Cherubi was introduced as to whether the weather conditions would influence how it evolved: Sunshine Form Cherrim only spawns during sunny weather, while Overcast can spawn in any weather. Given this, it would follow that Cherubi can only be evolved into its Sunshine Form during sunny weather - but no, it's entirely up to chance. Feels like they just didn't care enough to bother with this one.

  • Toxel - this one makes a bit more sense since natures don't exist in Go, and less of an issue than the others since the two forms are functionally identical. Amusingly, this means it's possible to obtain Toxtricity in the MSG with natures they shouldn't be able to have, since transferring Pokemon to Home gives them a randomly-generated nature.

  • Tyrogue - a partial example, as it evolves based on the highest IV unless there's a tie, in which case it's random. Curiously, I've read that the odds appear to be biased in favour of Hitmontop when the evolution is random - Silph Road did a study and reported that roughly 50% of evolved Tyrogue became Hitmontop while the other 50% were split evenly between Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan - goes against the MSG where statistically Hitmontop would be the rarest outcome.

Poipole - catch 20 Dragon-types with this as your buddy. As Poipole is currently a one-time only Pokemon, the steepness of the quest feels justified (but there was a Dragon community day at the end of the season Poipole was introduced in anyway, so most people would have been able to complete this).

The thing that annoys me about Poipole, rather than its catch-20-Dragon-types requirement, is that it also has a huge candy requirement on top of that… but the research gives you enough candy to evolve it anyway, so what’s the point?

Galarian Farfetch'd - make 10 excellent throws with this as your buddy. Kind of a random requirement but fits the general idea of being "lucky" since the MSG requires landing three critical hits in one battle - struggling to think what battle requirements would have worked better than this, since "win 3 battles/raids with x as your buddy" is trivially easy. I think this one's pretty cool.

Yeah, I always thought this one was very clever. Critical hits don’t exist in Go, but an excellent throw is more-or-less like what a critical hit is supposed to be — a very precise and fortunate strike on a particular weak spot.

Galarian Yamask & Hisuian Qwilfish - win 10 raids with this as your buddy. Doing these together as they have the same quest. Pretty generic but both of their evolution methods in the MSG are so ridiculously convoluted there was no hope of translating that in a way most people could easily do.

I’m surprised the methods for these two aren’t more battle-focused. Like, I guess it’s battle-adjacent since they need to be your buddy while doing raid battles, but they don’t actually need to participate in those battles themselves. Yet in the main games, if you take away the whole “walk under a stone arch” aspect of it, Galarian Yamask’s requirement is basically “take damage,” and Hisuian Qwilfish’s is “use this move a lot” like Annihilape (and in SV, it’s simplified to just “know this move”). Both of which convey more of an idea of them being personally involved in the battles.

Hisuian Sneasel - walk 7km with this as your buddy. Much like its Johtonian form, it requires an item to evolve in the MSG but a Sinnoh Stone wouldn't have worked here for obvious reasons.

At the risk of looking dense, why wouldn’t a Sinnoh Stone have worked? Not that I think they would go for that since I imagine TPC probably want to keep the Sinnoh/Hisui distinction clear for branding purposes, but unless that’s what you meant, I don’t see why a Sinnoh Stone + daytime requirement for Hisuian Sneasel couldn’t work just as Sinnoh Stone + nighttime works for Johtonian Sneasel.

Dipplin - catch 7 Dragon-type Pokemon with this as your buddy. Why 7 specifically I've no idea

It’s most certainly because Hydrapple has 7 “syrpents”

As it's a special Pokemon they likely didn't want to make it too easy to obtain. It's tradeable now so it's possible to have multiple Naganadel (though realistically someone committed enough to trade for multiple Poipole will probably have the candy necessary to evolve them)

That was indeed what I meant. Using a Sinnoh Stone would blur the distinction.

Oh yeah! Duh.

According to datamines remote trading is well and truly on the way - looks like a further level of friendship (Forever Friends), with a single remote trade unlocked after certain tasks are completed.

Well, that's nice. Hopefully the tasks will be relatively mundane (possibly doing a certain amount of catching/raiding/walking between the pair of you) and easy to unlock. I'm lucky with both Expert Evan and pika pal currently so it'd be good to finally knock those trades out!

From what I saw said about it, you can refresh the remote trade by continuing to send gifts with the same friend.

I hadn't heard about tasks associated.

I hope this will be for real when this happens as I have over 100 lucky friends on my main and alt accounts some of which I have across all accounts. Speaking of which, I'm finally done with the doing a route 7 days in a row as that was one of my biggest fears that I would accidentally break the streak and start all over again. Now it's the grind to acquire a million stardust to get to level 72.

I'm about 100k off... never has a grind felt so... well, grind-y. I think the most annoying thing about it is that the bar constantly updates so every little bit of progress you make feels that much less significant. Managed to do a few Grimmsnarl Gigantamax battles remotely last weekend though which helped a lot. Forgot to put a star piece on but 25k per battle is still extremely good.
