"Masculine" resources play off the influx of disaffected players who have soured on encyclopedias. They present themselves as proudly partial, aiming to "cut through all the bullshit" and mold knowledgeable nobodies into real players.

Let's look at an example, in fact what inspired me to make this thread. In this video (and in his subsequent challenge), Vert identifies Pinkacross's channel as an "encyclopedia"-like resource which aims to "prey on new players", and derides him as "unqualified" and "fraudulent". Afterwards, Vert advertises his own tutoring services and makes the claim that offense is easy, simple, and not "pussy" compared to slower styles.

Since I've been summoned, you get my honest opinions as a long-term BW gamer who's still in touch with (a big portion of) the playerbase:
  • Cow: If you need a serious BW starter buy it'd be either Cow or the next guy on this list. I don't have much to say about him, except that he's really good! I'd bet real € on him going positive.
  • Brine: His signature is undoubtedly funny (and true), plus he helped Rewer last year, so he's not completely new to the environment. He's attuned with the current meta and actively plays it. His BWCOP is a testament to to how good he is. 100% recommended.
  • Quarante8: Great buy, he's got that classic gens instinct. Even if you end up slotting him in RBY I trust he'll be a top-tier addiction to your BW channel (and in classic gens)
  • harshest: Despite the worst name change of all times, he's still a VERY good BW player. Even if you get him for another gen, he'd be a fantastic addition to your BW channel. He's one of those players attuned to the tier, which is rare.
  • Wait2Seconds: How has this guy not played SPL yet? Perhaps the most egregious continued snub. He's definitely a top tier BW player if you agree to not micro-manage him.
  • Finchinator: He definitely needs some encouragement, so here's my endorsement! He's easily a top 3 BW gamer (#1 being me, won't disclose the other spots, but Finch is in there).

gotei(13) hyorinmaru...I always felt bad, because you never got that trophy! Everyone else who made multiple finals back in the day picked one up, but I guess you left too soon. It's never too late.
Loki...talk about a legend of the game! You joined this website before I got married, and now I have three beautiful children and you have two trophies! All that's missing is that red trophy to complete the collection.
Eo Ut Mortus...when I left you hadn't played in a bit, and I never saw you get revenge for your last season. No one was better in those first two years of SPL. Come back to show them how it's done?
august...it looks like you have a fancy white trophy now? Good on you! That was a young prodigy back when I played, it would be great to see your career come full circle!
ToF...now we're going to more recent years, because I still remember that finals win against Malekith in 2012. That Calm Mind Blissey? Expertly played! Keep the flame lit for the old timers.
Delta 2777 and Bluewind...I loved that Smogon Tour 10 format, and that series was full of haymakers! If either of them come back, oh boy, you're all in for a treat.
Tamahome...you might already have this trophy, but nobody played Diamond and Pearl like you. A little bit of prep, a little bit of support, you can show those newfangled kids something impressive.
The Grand Babido...felt like you did well in every tournament back in the day. Kids these days and their work ethic, they don't understand the value of consistency like that.
WhiteQueen...oh, I remember that Official Smogon Tournament ten years ago. I bet you could come back and compete on the ladder nowadays, maybe you win a second red trophy in style?

Welp, that's the list, I think! Hopefully I didn't forget anyone, and hopefully I didn't list anyone who's gotten themselves wrapped up in trouble. I have to go make dinner for the family now, but hopefully I'll see some of the old guard in a few weeks. Remind the kids today to respect their elders!

Thanks so much for the shout out - I appreciate the kind words! It means a lot to hear that my tournament runs from two decades ago when I was just a kid stuck with you. I'm a busy dad myself now too, but every couple years, something will remind me of the Netbattle days, and I'll get the itch to grind the ADV ladder. It's awesome how many vets are still in the scene and winning trophies 20 years later :)

Never too late to sign up for SPL
 
I see a lot of ppl talking about big money and AI ruining stuff (the ladder), but I think you're all missing the real story and that is RAM shortage and an absolute price gouge coming near any real GAMER soon enough.

"But Kalalokki, how does this affect me, the average reader of this thread and soon to be player in Smogon's most prestigious team tournament?" Well, I'm glad you asked. It's not going to happen for this SPL, but come SPL XVIII and SPL XIX (sick romans btw) you're all either going to be too broke to even game on your phone's browser because they're gonna stop making cheap phones or because RAM sticks are so valuable, small, and untraceable that dirty crooks are going to be break in to your homes, smash your GAMER PC to bits just go get hold of them, and then sell them on the used market to other rabid GAMERS.

This is indeed a very bleak future and one that I sadly can't impact with my limited power as a moderator on this site. But, if there's one thing I can do then that is edit art made by the GOAT to bring back a little more color in to your life and that is this:

Hello all

I know my name is still unknown for most on the main event scene as I mostly am just a ladder player, but I feel I am a strong player and want to start making more of a name for myself. Im confident I would be a great addition to any team that would want to take a flyer on me. I can realistically play any tier that you need of me, but my strengths by far are SS and SV. Thank you!
