Important Mechanical Changes:
  • Red Orb and Blue Orb can be used as Mega Stones and grant Pokemon with the relevant boosts.
  • Aggronite now grants a secondary Steel-typing, rather than removing secondary typing.
  • Pokemon who are banned from Mega Evolving may still Mega Evolve with a native Mega Stone (Mewtwo-Mega-Y, etc)
  • Pokemon can evolve using their native Mega Stones even if the Mega Stone is banned, unless otherwise stated.
  • Full Pokedex and move list are usable. This includes moves like Core Enforcer, Pursuit, Return/Frustration, and many others.
  • Z-Crystals can be used.
  • Rapid Spin is 20 BP and does not increase Speed.
  • Grassy, Electric, and Psychic Terrain boost is 1.5x instead of 1.3x.
  • Defog no longer removes Terrains.
  • Inner Focus, Oblivious, Scrappy, Rattled, and Own Tempo no longer have immunity to Intimidate
  • Disguise does no damage to Mimikyu after activation.

With Mix and Mega Premier League coming up, and ORAS MnM being a playable format there, we have elected to learn from the No Johns Tournament and do some tiering action on the metagame. For the most part, this is a light hand while we wait to learn more from the Premier League, but there were a couple of things we felt confident to do now.

Correspondingly, Sleep Moves have been banned!
They were always a rather difficult to balance part of the gen 6 metagame, particularly with the legality of Pidgeotite, and it is hoped that getting rid of them will reduce somewhat the absurd difficulty to switch in to fast attackers like Gengar; they are still very potent offensively, but no longer have the option to simply shut down anything without a Sablenite.

Secondly, Lucario and Cresselia are now permitted to mega evolve again. It is our judgment that as pokemon has evolved over the years, the reasons for their banning no longer apply, particularly Cresselia as more creativity in dealing with bulky setup has become common.

Honestly great changes, ORAS had the weirdest banlist of all the metas and even though I haven't played it for 2y these changes are a good thing.

The only thing that I'd like changed now before MnMPL is a Gen 8 Solg restrict, because the degeneration it causes is so stupid and the unreliability of the answers to it basically let it beat all its checks. Hell, it even 6-0d in finals despite Heatran being present, even if Magma Storm did miss.

Overall very excited for MnMPL as a whole though as a whole, even if I am prioritising LCMnM over other tiers

I have two announcements to make! Firstly, we have assembled a provisional council for ORAS tiering, rather than my just continuing to act by fiat on obvious things. Please welcome Terracotta dhelmise Glory and Pokemh , who will be joining me in the ORAS council.

To start things off, we have made our first banlist decision, and voted to restrict Entei from mega evolving. Between its potent offensive movepool, solid bulk, and meaty attack, it never fails to contribute to a matchup, and that's before one considers its status as the undisputed best revenge killers in the tier. Only a handful of bulky water-type pokemon like Arceus and Slowbro can reliably stand up to it, and in the face of ORAS' 12% burns, even they can often be bypassed by a skilled player, particularly since they still take a solid chunk from Extreme Speed and Return. In the judgment of the ORAS mix and mega council, it is simply too consistant of an inclusion for almost any team in ORAS, with little to no reason not to include it on a team, which homogenizes building and playing in undesirable directions. Other Extreme Speed users, including Arcanine, will remain legal for the moment, and we expect them to be able to capture most of Entei's positive aspects without being quite as overtuned.

We also aim to vote on Gengarite Gengar in the near future and hopefully get some work in on replacing resources, which are currently sorely lacking modern entries, so stay tuned for that.

Ban Gengar @ GengariteYesYesNoYesYes
The Oras council has also voted to prevent Gengar from using Gengarite. In addition to removing an uncompetitive element, it is hoped that this will make the current banlist less confusing, and improve the quality of games going forwards.

ight my season is over so it's time to post. I enjoyed mnmpl and my teamcord, i think it was a success. id like to thank my team for making this a fun experience and especially Gman for his support. from bouncing ideas to posting teams to playing tests, gman was there for everything. love you bro. tyvm to TrainerGoldAlt and Mincera31 as well for support and tests. these 2 are easily the most talented mnm players in 2026/25, please draft them for ompl and other om tours. it would be criminal if they dont get picked in the future. anyway let's get into SM talk

Teamdump:
W1 vs Maxouille (W)
1771860484541.png
I just randomly felt like loading a genesect so I rolled with it. I hadn't played SM in years but it was surprisingly easy to unrust, especially building wise. The star core of the team is genesect + xerneas. The idea is simple. Use genesect to bait steels and pdon (and click boom) to heavily chip them and sweep with xern. Chose lando as my rocker cuz hey the more explosion users the better right? Red Orb Mew is the orber of choice cuz using pdon is lame and mew has great offensive prospects. Zapdos is just a nice sab user cuz it handles pins users (didnt want to deal with pinsmage/entei bs), has uturn/defog and baits Pdon in. Buzzwole is mainly there for Zygarde--it's also just a good wincon in general. I love this team it wins fast and has very easy clicks.

W2 vs db (W)
1771861359872.png
Didn't have time to experiment much this week so I figured I'd just load something uber solid and try to outplay. I was pretty happy with how this team turned out--i felt i had good outs vs everything. Luc Lele is one of the best (if not the best) breakers of this metagame, and I had a feeling db would go for a more balanced approach with blissey and stuff so punishing those with CM Psyshock felt logical. MandiMew is a solid defensive core, only a few things like opp Lele and Ogre beat it. Pinsmage is pretty broken and handles Lele/Kart/Blissey nonsense so I had to put it on the team. Pdon is the obvious rocker and checks a wide range of threats like Xern and Entei. I was looking for a fast toxic mon as speed control--Zera fit perfectly. Overall the team doesn't really have any immediately losing matchups so i was pretty comfy with loading it. Had a nice game too--had things in control the whole time and i dont think i made any significant inaccuracies.

W3 vs Mincera31 (L)
1771861921085.png
I knew Mince mainly loaded standard balance stuff so i had to figure out a way to punish that. koko looked juicy cuz it chips down opp team extremely fast with NMadness + Volt + Toxic. Chose dia terrak as my rocker and speed control cuz i like its prospects of setting rocks vs common sab users like mandi / blissey / zapdos. Mage is again the steel type of choice, god I love pinsmage and heal bell is so good. Pdon to shut down xern bs. Picked Mew + spdef Groundy as my defensive core this time. little unconventional but i needed the groundy vs opp pdon and lunala. The game wasn't as simple as the last 2 though. Matchup I'd say was around even / in his favor. I didnt sense the dangers in the position and missed a winning line. Then I had another chance to MAYBE salvage it (I had to hit a couple of stone edges) but I missed it too. So yeah it's joever. Was annoyed with how I played this especially the koko vs terrak decision where i just completely turned my brain off. But yea you live and learn.

W4 vs jb291 (W)
1771864933425.png
Oh boy I love this team. gman showed me a couple psyspams a week or 2 prior and I was like, i gotta load it at some point. Lele, DeoA and Unecro are obvious picks. alt lando is a solid rocker, good vs mandi, espeeders, pdon, terrak and so on. SD Pdon is just insurance vs steels etc + it no longer gets rk'd by golisopod so thats nice. My team told me to replace Xurk but I knew Xurk was him. And i was right lol. TG Xurk is borked (plus it's solid vs pinsmage). Absol/Dia are also options to outspeed Landos.

W5 vs ZombieEyeZ (L)
1771865574452.png
An infamous ladder 6 (though I edited it and removed golis for zyg-complete)--i used to lose to it all the time back in the day. It's rly cheesy though cuz using loom is kind of trolling but it's fun to use regardless. Immediately regretted loading this and I ended up losing to the same team I lost to in W3 LOL. though it was mostly my fault. Zombie was playing very aggressive early game so I went for some greedy plays to regain momentum. Didn't see removal so tried clicking rocks on the dia Lele (thinking he'd want to preserve it cuz it completely shuts down loom and go lando instead, but as it turned out opp didnt know loom was prank in the first place--which is fair considering it's the first time theyre playing mnm). plan totally backfired, twas just an overprediction and i never got a chance to defog the rocks that bounced to my side (i failed to catch the pdon on my mandi double, gotta say it was weird they were so intent on sacking lele every turn). My mage also got spdef dropped so I had to lose material there. They took their foot off the gas and I managed to pull some tricks with breloom that let me back in the game a little (cuz of the lele sack) but ultimately... it's a breloom and with no mons left, I just cannot win the game. Very frustrated with this loss, it could've been easily avoided if I just played a little more patiently. Alas.

Ended up going 3-2, which isn't like down bad but both my losses were avoidable and my own fault. But ye c'est la vie. Here's a bonus team:
1771866513005.png
Fairly standard bliss balance with pogre. Just be a little careful vs TSpikes and Terrakion.

There's so many things that I wanted to load that I couldn't. Golis, Bliss, Pogre, Kart, Lunala, Victini, Yveltal, Araq.... the list goes on. Very fun meta with a lot of room for creativity. My advice to anyone reading this would be to stop using boring stalls and explore the strong options the meta has to offer--you'll enjoy it a lot that way (though if you find stall fun... well, go ahead, stalls are decent in this meta). Initially was Pidgeotite Thundy over Noivern but I wanted something faster and with more defensive utility. Definitely worked out for the better. Lando-T seemed like the best Blazikenite mon at the time and I just wanted to run as many broken mons as possible. A replacement for Gar could make this work still but idrc. No removal because I'm not a coward.

:zygarde: :arceus-water: :groudon-primal: :mew: :landorus-therian: :xerneas:
Pretty standard HO though Waterceus is a little weird I just wanted something that was both threatening and had a good bit of defensive utility—I always want my HOes to be able to switch around a bit instead of just sitting in until the mon is dead and you send out the next one because those kinds of teams fucking suck. I missed Stone Edge and then threw endgame because I didn't know Feint was +2 Priority which was frustrating for my only loss.

:groudon-primal: :blissey: :zygarde: :arceus-ground: :heatran: :excadrill:
Wanted to lean into something bulkier so the team is much more passive damage oriented with Exca a cleaner. Groundceus was chosen because I faced Thunder Wave Don the prior week and I saw a few other people using it, and had a gut feeling I'd see it again, and I was correct. Gravity because the team is pretty ground heavy and I didn't want to get smoked by Ho-Oh or Heatran. Game was a little scuffed with luck on both ends but Gravity + Excadrill clinched it in the end.

dhelmise reused this in finals after the team we spent all week building fell through in testing (it wasn't even that bad it just couldn't switch into Toxic at all) where a couple things certainly happened...

:excadrill: :groudon-primal: :landorus-therian: :mew: :arceus-water: :zygarde:
I didn't play ORAS this week because we were just barely hanging on and I felt confident Swas would have it on lock even if dhelmise loaded something serious. Instead we faced mono-Fairy and Exca 6-0ed. I wanted to do something more offensive with Exca since it's a really nasty mon. I settled on Superpower Zygarde to lure Heatran and Mence Lando as a way to get rid of both Ground-type checks and blanket physical walls. Mew Primal Groudon core reused from week 1 with Waterceus to round it out as I wasn't 100% certain in the other mons defensive efficacy and there's no bailout of Destiny Bond Gengar.

:groudon-primal: :excadrill: :lucario: :xerneas: :zygarde: :arceus-ghost:
Built this for dhelmise in semis as a kinda basic example build but he liked the team so he rolled with it. Wanted to avoid suicide leads to cram as much power into six slots as possible so SD Rocks Primal Groudon was really the only option for hazards. Excadrill because it's insane and Lucario didn't really see any use despite being a really nasty attacker. Ghostceus because it's very threatening, more so than Waterceus, without compromising defensive utility like Darkceus which is another guy I looked at. There's really not many good HO special attackers aside from Xerneas and CM Arcs anyway.

With a 5-0 vote, Blazikenite will also be joining the banlist for ORAS Mix and Mega. It's proven an overwhelming presence on all kinds of setup sweepers, most notably Excadrill and Landorus-T, and can run away with the game given only a free turn or two. Nor are they low on utility; with protect, blazikenite pokemon can surve as an excellent if unconventional speed control, making them even easier to slot on teams. We think the metagame will be healthier with it no longer available.

Gonna retire my ORAS MnM teams here now that Blazikenite has been banned + drop some insights. Can't say I'm thrilled about the ban because it's super fun to use lol and adds some interesting speed control options, but it's understandable. Honestly it's been like 7 years since I last thought about this tier seriously, but it's still one of my favorites on smogon.

This is the team I used when ORAS was current gen, which is kind of outdated, but I think it still manages to win some games. To this day, I think Gira-O is severely underutilized, with it being one of the best PDon checks and checking a lot of random mons like Pidgeotite Keldeo, Pidgeotite Thundurus, Blazikenite Lando-T, Red Orb Raikou, and it's generally hard to switch into unless you're running a Sablenite mon. I'm also a firm believer that Ate-Boom is the best Lando-T set, even considering Blazikenite, because of how it emergency checks physical threats and nukes walls like Sablenite Zapdos or Blue Orb Skarmory. Blazikenite Exca is not as potent as Blazikenite Lando-T, but I much prefer saving Lando-T for defensive utility. PDon is a basic support set with Lava Plume to pressure Sablenite mons, and Latiasite Klefki is the team's utility mon with a nice Prankster TWave on the Mega turn. Pidgeotite Keldeo was kind of slapped on there as a Glalite Weavile resist, but I think a stallbreaking MGar set is potentially better, ignoring that. Overall, the team was pretty strong but suspect vs. fat Sablenite Blissey teams, especially stall, which I don't see much of nowadays. Also potentially weak to Outrage Blazikenite Lando-T, but the meta never developed enough to get there.

The next two teams were built sometime during USM are better imo.

This team features max Def Sablenite Blissey as a general Ate and physical check, which it is surprisingly effective at. Honestly, its usage should be way higher than what it is now, but I think everybody's gut instinct in unfamiliar metas is to use broken offensive mons. Gira-O and Latiasite Heatran make up the rest of the defensive core, checking Blazikenite Exca/Lando-T and Altarianite Zygarde respectively. The offensive Perish Trap MGar set makes sure threats like Altarianite Extreme Speed users and Sablenite Blissey are eliminated so that Red Orb Raikou has an easy game. I'm not that sold on Red Orb Raikou honestly, and it might just be a relic of 2016, but with MGar support it is at least somewhat effective. There are probably better alternatives. Altarianite Zygarde is the final piece to help revenge kill strong Fighting-types like Lucarionite Terrakion, who is arguably the biggest threat to the team.

I was never the biggest fan of HO, but Ate-Boom is so ridiculously powerful. Gyaradosite Mew used to be Gyaradosite Deo-S before its ban, but I actually like Mew better now since it's less susceptible to Ate and adds some stallbreaking with the annoying 12.5% burn every turn. Salamencite Lando-T and Pinsirite Metagross serve as the team's breakers that ultimately allow for a Blazikenite Exca sweep. It's still the defensive Lando-T spread because you really don't need attack investment on a +2 Boom. I'm using the D-Tail Altarianite Zygarde set to get extra chip, as Zygarde is more of a utility piece than a revenge killer on this team. Finally, Latiasite Rotom-W is a defensive anchor to make HO mirrors less volatile, and it's great for pivoting into your Exca or Boom.

One thing I'd like to see more is stall and fat cores in this tier, as it's quite undeveloped. Obviously, the biggest threats to those structures are MGar and Ate-Boom, but I think with the correct prep, they can still be effective. These crazy tiers kind of favor good prep and utilizing the element of surprise to snipe certain teambuilding patterns, so fat definitely has its place, especially when the tools are there with Sablenite, Latiasite, and standard Ubers stuff. Sleep also got banned which is a plus.
