[OVERVIEW]

Greninja's stats may seem mediocre, but much like any accomplished ninja, it's second to none at assassination thanks to a wide variety of unique tools! The most prominent of these tools is its ability Protean, which functionally gives it STAB on every attack in the game, more than making up for its mediocre offenses. Greninja isn't limited to just type changing shenanigans, as it is also the best user of the ability Torrent in Battle Spot Singles, being able to annihilate most offensive Pokemon with a Torrent-boosted Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon. Combine this with Greninja's incredible Speed stat, which allows it to outspeed Naganadel and Mega Salamence, and this puts the silent assassin among the deadliest offensive threats in the metagame!

Greninja may be a deadly offensive threat, but it has very lackluster defensive stats that make it very difficult to switch in. Even with Protean or Torrent making up for Greninja's low offensive stats, it still misses out on important KOs against Pokemon it hits for neutral damage and doesn't do particularly well against stall teams, meaning Greninja is a Pokemon that should not be used recklessly.

Moves
========

Ice Beam is a fantastic option on Greninja, letting it KO many prominent threats such as Landorus-T, Naganadel, Mega Salamence, and Thundurus-T. Water Shuriken is a good priority move that has the potential to do a lot of damage due to its multi-hit nature. It helps Greninja pick off weakened Blaziken, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Excadrill, and other offensive threats. Dark Pulse is the best shot Greninja has against Aegislash and Mega Metagross. It also prevents Cresselia from walling Greninja, and the flinch chance can come in handy. If Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor are serious problems, Hidden Power Fire can be used to deal with them. Hidden Power Fire is also notable for allowing a healthy Greninja to survive any attack a Focus Sash Kartana throws at it thanks to Protean.

For the last slot, going mixed with Gunk Shot can be a good choice for OHKOing Tapu Lele, 2HKOing Tapu Fini, and blasting the less common Water / Fairy types, Azumarill and Primarina. Scald is a reliable Water-type attack, while Hydro Pump is a riskier, more powerful option that should be used with Waterium Z. Surf works as a mid-way option between the two if Scald's burn chance isn't appealing for the team. Finally, if using Focus Sash, Rock Tomb is a reasonable choice to give Greninja some speed control and a way to deal serious damage to Charizard formes and Volcarona.

Set Details
========

This Greninja set is extremely customizable, so using specific moves or items to cover team weaknesses is worthy of consideration. Focus Sash can have the most devastating potential consequences, making Greninja an excellent lead that can pressure common foes such as Landorus-T thanks to surviving at least one attack from them. Alternatively, Life Orb gives Greninja a significant boost in damage. For example, Dark Pulse has a 75% shot of OHKOing Mega Metagross with Stealth Rock up, Hydro Pump now 2HKOes Assault Vest Tyranitar, and Gunk Shot OHKOes offensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock damage. Waterium Z also works well if using Hydro Pump to give Greninja a powerful Water-type STAB attack with Hydro Vortex. If using only special attacks and a Timid nature, put the remaining 4 EVs in Special Defense to survive offensive Mega Gengar's Sludge Bomb.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used mid- or late-game, since missing out on a KO can lead to disaster. Since this is one of Greninja's most unpredictable sets, you can easily force out Pokemon that are weak to its common moves, such as Ice Beam, and predict the switch to gain an edge by using Greninja's less common moves such as Hidden Power Fire and Grass Knot. Greninja's knack for forcing switches also makes it a good candidate to double switch with.

With a Focus Sash, using Greninja early in the game becomes a much more feasible task. Since Greninja excels in at forcing switches, consider predicting its switch-in and using an appropriate move.

Team Options
========

Since Greninja is frail, Pokemon with U-turn and Volt Switch are a great way to get it in unharmed. Landorus-T is an excellent choice with diverse options, being able to play a supportive role to set up Stealth Rock, use Assault Vest to sponge hits from Tapu Koko, or even run Knock Off to punish Porygon2 switch-ins for Greninja. Rotom-H is another great choice, as it's a good check to Tapu Koko and can use Trick to scare off Porygon2. Landorus-T and Rotom-H are also notable for underspeeding a wide variety of threats that Greninja can punish, but faster options, such as Tapu Koko and Thundurus-T, are also good choices.

While most offensive Pokemon appreciate chip damage, it is key to Greninja's success as a cleaner rather than just a revenge killer. Stealth Rock support from bulky setters such as Landorus-T is the easiest way to achieve this, and Pokemon that can help against Tapu Koko and Choice Scarf Electric-types such as Thundurus-T are particularly good choices. Good examples include Hippowdon, which is notable for kicking up a Sandstorm to rack up even more residual damage, and Ferrothorn, which does an excellent job at defeating Tapu Koko that lack Hidden Power Fire.

[SET]
name: Substitute + Torrent
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Hydro Cannon
move 3: Water Shuriken
move 4: Ice Beam / Dark Pulse
item: Waterium Z
ability: Torrent
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

This Greninja attempts to bust through bulky foes with powerful Torrent-powered attacks. Substitute is the key to this tactic, safely whittling Greninja's HP into the one-third range for Torrent to activate. Hydro Cannon, when paired with Waterium Z and a Torrent boost, becomes an extremely powerful attack. Even foes that resist Hydro Vortex, such as Ferrothorn and Tapu Fini, will take over 50% from it! Additionally, Hydro Vortex also assassinates Blaziken through its Protect after Stealth Rock damage, thus removing its ability to revenge kill Greninja easily. Water Shuriken further accentuates Greninja's power against Blaziken, KOing Mega Blaziken after a Hydro Vortex through its Protect, in addition to picking off weakened threats. Ice Beam deals massive damage to Mega Salamence, Naganadel, Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Serperior. Dark Pulse is a secondary STAB attack that does good damage to Aegislash and has a chance to make the foe flinch.

Set Details
========

Greninja should always have Waterium Z, which makes Hydro Cannon less risky. 4 Special Defense EVs are needed to allow Greninja to survive a Sludge Bomb from offensive Mega Gengar. A Timid nature lets Greninja outspeed Mega Salamence and Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========

The general idea is to use Substitute three times against offensive Pokemon, which will put Greninja into Torrent's range. Using Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon is the best option when in Torrent range in most cases. While Hydro Vortex is extremely powerful when boosted by Torrent, some bulkier switch-ins to Greninja such as Ferrothorn will still survive it, so it's usually best to save Greninja for mid- or late-game, when such threats are in KO range.

With Torrent, Hydro Canon on its own is still very powerful. When using this move, make sure setup sweepers are either gone or easily checked by your team, or you'll be severely punished due to the recharge turn. Regardless, expect to lose Greninja the next turn if this doesn't end the match.

Team Options
========

Users of U-turn and Volt Switch are extremely useful to Greninja, since not only do these moves help scout your opponent's team to determine when to set up a Substitute more easily, they also get Greninja in safely. Good examples of such Pokemon that pair well with Greninja include Landorus-T, Rotom-H, Thundurus-T, Zapdos, and Scizor.

It is a good idea to have checks to bulky Water-types such as Tapu Fini, and Ferrothorn and Snorlax in particular even though Hydro Vortex hits them hard. Thundurus-T hits Tapu Fini hard and smashes Ferrothorn with Focus Blast while helping against Tapu Koko, a potential revenge killer. Mega Charizard X and Y and Blaziken do well against Ferrothorn, deal massive damage to Snorlax, and have ways around Tapu Fini. If bulky Water-types are especially problematic, Tapu Bulu can be used, as it does well against Tapu Fini and Mega Gyarados and can deal heavy damage to Snorlax.

[SET]
name: Torrent + Focus Sash
move 1: Scald / Surf
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Water Shuriken
move 4: Ice Beam / Dark Pulse / Toxic
item: Focus Sash
ability: Torrent
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Unlike other Focus Sash Greninja sets, this set focuses on Greninja's ability to disrupt opposing leads. Taunt is an excellent way to stop the opponent's gameplans such as setting up Stealth Rock or Trick Room, coming in handy later to stop other Pokemon from setting up. Greninja needs a reliable Water-type STAB attack to use when Torrent is activated, and Scald is a perfect fit with the bonus of potentially burning targets. Surf is also a reasonable option, as it is slightly more powerful and does not interfere with status from teammates. Water Shuriken is a useful priority attack that can easily pick off lead Blaziken after a hit from Scald as well as let Greninja sweep late-game when Torrent would be activated.

The last moveslot is team specific. Ice Beam is useful for hitting Dragon-types like Mega Salamence, Naganadel, and Garchomp hard and does good damage to Breloom and Serperior. Dark Pulse is a reliable STAB attack that has a chance to make opposing Pokemon flinch and isn't affected by Mega Charizard Y's sun. Finally, Toxic may seem strange, but it's useful for crippling bulky switch-ins such as Porygon2 and Snorlax.

Set Details
========

A Timid nature with maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed is needed to outspeed major threats such as Mega Salamence and Naganadel and deal as much damage as possible. Since this Greninja usually focuses on using its STAB attacks, Torrent is a better option than Protean to take advantage of boosted Water-type attacks when Greninja is low on health.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used early-game, since Focus Sash will allow it to survive an attack and it does a great job at stopping teams from executing their early-game plans with Taunt. However, Greninja doesn't need to be sacrificed early-game, since, with Torrent, it has the potential to sweep offensive teams late-game, especially if Stealth Rock isn't up on your side. However, note that due to its lower coverage in comparison to Protean Greninja, this Greninja isn't as effcient at late-game sweeping.

Team Options
========

Consider Pokemon that benefit from Stealth Rock being off the field, since this Greninja prevents it early-game, as well as setup sweepers that benefit from bulky Pokemon being Taunted. Volcarona is an excellent example — it can easily set up Quiver Dance with Stealth Rock off the field and bulky foes such as Porygon2 and Hippowdon unable to inflict it with status or phaze it due to Taunt. Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y are also reasonable options, but note that Mega Charizard Y's sun will weaken Greninja's Water-type moves. Mega Salamence is an especially notable option, since this Greninja can cripple Porygon2 with Toxic. Landorus-T, having little issue with Stealth Rock can also work well here due to Greninja crippling common checks to it.

[SET]
name: Physically Based Choice Scarf
move 1: Gunk Shot
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Rock Slide / Rock Tomb
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Protean
nature: Naive
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Choice Scarf may seem strange on such a fast Pokemon, but it allows Greninja to revenge kill many prominent speedy Pokemon, such as Tapu Koko, and Pokemon that boost their Speed, such as Naganadel, Volcarona, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Salamence. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-types that would otherwise wall Greninja, such as Tapu Fini, and OHKOes Tapu Lele and Tapu Koko. Ice Beam allows Greninja to effectively revenge kill Landorus-T and Dragon-types. U-turn gives Greninja a way to break Mimikyu's Disguise without putting itself in danger and can work well when leading. Rock Slide allows Greninja to revenge kill Volcarona and Mega Charizard Y, deal massive damage to Mega Charizard X, and 2HKO Araquanid switch-ins. Rock Tomb is less powerful than Rock Slide, but its speed control can be useful.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Attack EVs are needed so Greninja can revenge kill its targets. A Naive nature is preferred, since this Greninja needs Ice Beam to KO Dragon-types and it leaves Greninja less vulnerable to priority attacks compared to a Hasty nature. Protean is required because Greninja's attacks are fairly weak without a STAB boost.

Usage Tips
========

Using U-turn early-game gives Greninja increased scouting potential, making it an excellent lead. Its increased Speed also makes Greninja a great revenge killer of Speed-boosting threats such as Mega Salamence, Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Naganadel. Since this Greninja uses Choice Scarf and is physically based, bulky Pokemon, such as Porygon2, Chansey, and Ferrothorn are massive problems for it, so consider benching it when facing stall teams.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock support helps ensure that Greninja does not miss KOing important threats like Naganadel. Good, bulky candidates include Landorus-T, Hippowdon, and Ferrothorn, but more offensive setters such as Garchomp can also work.

Defensive Pokemon that often show up outside of stall teams, such as Porygon2 and Ferrothorn, are also big issues for this Greninja, and Kartana is more threatening than usual due to this Greninja's focus on physical attacks. These factors make Mega Charizard X an excellent teammate, since it easily sets up on Ferrothorn, forces out Kartana that lack Giga Impact, and also takes pressure off Greninja to surprise Tapu Koko. Volcarona is another awesome Fire-type that has the bonus of setting up against Porygon2 that lack a way to inflict paralysis. Mega Lopunny and Blaziken are less bulky but speedy teammates that can threaten many of Choice Scarf Greninja's threats as well.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Grass Knot paired with Grassium Z can get surprise KOs on foes like Tapu Fini, Rotom-W, and Swampert. It has better accuracy than Hydro Pump and can give Greninja a useful defensive typing. However, it offers much lesser coverage than Greninja's other options. Spikes can be set up to destroy Focus Sashes, but its inability to affect Flying-types and Pokemon with Levitate makes it less rewarding than using a Stealth Rock setter. Toxic Spikes is also usable, but it's generally outclassed by Toxic.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Porygon2**: Porygon2 only fears a Torrent-boosted Hydro Vortex. Otherwise, its bulk is often too much for Greninja to handle, letting it punish Greninja with status or deal good damage to Greninja's soft Special Defense.

**Araquanid**: Unless Greninja carries a Rock-type attack or Gunk Shot, it won't be doing much damage to Araquanid, whose Water-type attacks deal massive damage despite Greninja's resistance to them.

**Faster Pokemon**: Tapu Koko is chief among Greninja's problems due to its superior speed and access to Volt Switch, although it must watch out for Choice Scarf Greninja's Gunk Shot. Choice Scarf Thundurus-T, Choice Scarf Rotom-W, and Mega Manectric are also problematic for similar reasons. Hitting Greninja's weaknesses isn't even needed most of the time due to its poor defensive stats, so most Choice Scarf Pokemon are problematic as long as Greninja does not carry a Focus Sash.

**Mimikyu**: Like many offensive Pokemon, Mimikyu will easily revenge kill Greninja as long as it has Disguise up. Even without it, a healthy Mimikyu can survive regular attacks from Greninja in most cases.

**Ferrothorn**: Greninja that lack Hidden Power Fire or Low Kick will have severe problems muscling past Ferrothorn. However, note that a Torrent-boosted Hydro Vortex coming from Hydro Cannon does over 50% to physically defensive Ferrothorn.

**Mega Kangaskhan**: Mega Kangaskhan's good bulk and ability let it bust through Greninja fairly easily, though Low Kick and Torrent sets can still threaten to deal a lot of damage.

**Breloom**: While Breloom is easily KOed by Greninja, its access to Mach Punch means it can pick off Greninja early, especially before Protean kicks in.

I would put cannon over pump probably in the torrent z set. Cannon is like the main thing to go all out. Pump is more of a side option if you feel more comfortable with a move that doesnt require as much timing. They’re both viable i think but i feel cannon is more defining of this set

Move placement on the set reorganised to prioritise certain moves. This set is defined by SubTorrent so it should be named after that, and Substitute should be its own slot. Shuriken is also mandatory, the only thing that should have slashes is the fourth slot, because you choose between Ice Beam for Mence, or Dark Pulse / Scald for reliable STAB. Don't slash Hydro Pump, just mention it in the Moves section as an alternative for babies who don't go all in with CANNON lol.

everything else looks fine. I would put the 4 HP into Atk on the Life Orb set though so you get the 93.8% chance to OHKO Azu. Could/should do a physical attacker LO set as well.

Alright, spring break is here and I got time to go on an analysis rampage once more!

cant say I don't mind deslashing Hydro Pump (I am one of those babies though lol). I don't mind doing a physical attacker set either, I like it.

However, something to note: I was orignally going to do Sub torrent, but some QC members felt like I should make it general (was it NOVED or Jhon ? can't remember because last month was when college got nuts).

regardless, I just want to get that part settled with QC, and I'll quickly finish this up (among MANY other analysis things lol. Sorry for being gone, didn't want my grades to suffer!)

Like a Z Torrent set without Sub? Or a general Waterium set with Torrent as an option with Sub slashed? I think both of those ideas would be bad.

Torrent is used on 19% of Gren, Sub is used on 17%. I think if you're using Z-Torrent without Sub you're doing it wrong, and I haven't seen a single high rated blog that doesn't run Sub.

Z-Protean set should be its own set(s) (Grassium is also a thing). I don't know why we'd want a "general" Z set without sub when the Sub Torrent set is so prominent now...

Torrent only exists with z+sub or sash. I think we should be commiting to sub z-cannon as its own set. Personally I'd go with this
[SET]
name: SubTorrent
move 1: Hydro Cannon
move 2: Dark Pulse / Water Shuriken
move 3: Ice Beam / Water Shuriken
move 4: Substitute
item: Waterium Z
ability: Torrent
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
(or 12 HP / 12 Def / 228 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe but my preference is with the simpler spread)
In regards to other sets, I think Protean lo/sash/z (detailing it's ten trillion options) is still the primary set for Gren. Followed by sub+z, then scarf.

I kinda disagree with the slashing here. I feel shuriken is mandatory, especially so you can safely Z move into Blaziken's Protect and then clean it up after. The only slashes should be the fourth slot with Ice Beam / Dark Pulse / Scald (refer to the set I posted above)

I think Shuriken is far from mandatory. Not everything has to be geared for Blaziken removal. Shuriken-less versions have made it to the top just fine; Pulse and Beam both have very practical applications, together or otherwise.
It’s fine to have Shuriken slashed twice with mention in set comments on how it’s applied in general and specifically against Blaziken.

Is there going to be an Other Options section for this?

I believe Rock Tomb, Rock Slide, and Low Kick all deserve mentions for dealing with certain situations. Rock Tomb and Rock Slide are great for handling the omnipresent Charizard and ever threatening Volcarona with Rock Tomb's speed drop seeing particularly good utility on Sash Greninja to neuter and pick and pick off a speed boosted sweeper or allow a teammate to get the revenge kill and stop a sweep while Rock Slide offers more power and a decent flinch chance. And Low Kick help Greninja muscle through certain walls it otherwise can't beat. Most notably Chansey. I believe there's also Extrasensory for teams that particularly hate bulky Poison types like Toxapex and Mega Venusaur.

Also we still need the handy dandy Choice Scarf set mentioned. I imagine it goes something like this:

Set: Choice Scarf
Nature: Timid/Naive
EVs: 4 Attack/ 252 Sp. Att/ 252 Speed OR 252 Att / 4 Sp. Attack / 252 Speed
Move 1: Ice Beam
Move 2: Gunk Shot
Move 3: Rock Slide/Hydro Pump/Surf/Scald/Grass Knot
Move 4: U-Turn/Dark Pulse/Hidden Power Fire

Seems close to what the Smogon set currently has. I also have noticed that if special moves are of greater value than physical moves, one can opt for 76 Attack EVs as that guarentess a 2HKO on Bold Leftovers Tapu Fini while allowing the Special moves to do more damage with the remaining 176 EVs.

Rock Tomb and Rock Slide are gonna be beyond Other Options. Low Kick will probably still in Other Options though. Chansey is actually really light so Low Kick isn't busting through that. It was better when Mega Kangaskhan was everywhere last gen.

(Also worst case, this fucker finally gets done over thanksgiving break. Sorry for taking so long!)

I don’t think the scarf set that’s up was going away, though it could be updated to be less full physical.
Low kick and extrasensory are both low usage though, and not really a major part of Gren in bss. The two rock moves are good though, and Taunt is worth a mention as well.
Re Gunk vs Fini on special scarf. I wouldn’t think 76attack evs just to 2hko HB Lefties Fini was worth it. Max HB isn’t too common, lefties is pretty low usage and getting chip on Fini is remarkably easy.

I see. 20-28 Attack EVs would be more than sufficient to 2HKO most Bold Fini then and I take it Taunt would best fit on Sash Lead if 3 attacks was sufficient?

EDIT: THIS IS NOW READY FOR QC!

Holy shit I'm back! I've added in the Scarf set, and as per our discussion on discord with QC, I now have two sash sets! For now, Protean Sash is just grouped in with the Protean set, while Torrent Sash is a supportive sash set of sorts.

Now here's where things get tricky: I'm not 100% sure about Torrent Sash's slashes, because I swear almost all of them run something weird and different lol. Like I have in my notes, I was orginally gonna talk about Spikes and Tspikes in the set, but they have much lower usage than I thought, so I'm unsure now despite seeing them quite a few times. I also dont really like Hydro Cannon all that much on Sash, but it does seem to be used.

Also considering a special scarf set, but I don't really have much experience with it so I'd need some advice. Especially since I like the physically based one too much lol

Also sorry for the overview and first set being fully written up, I got carried away with that months ago lol. QC if you can, check everything here. I want to be able to get the torrent set and checks and counters part done tomorrow so we can FINALLY move onto QC!

Just to go through a few things.

- Snorlax, much for the same reason as P2 is an excellent Greninja check. Takes nothing from everything except torrent boosted Z-move. If you play that matchup right, you will win it but just have to be careful about your recycles if curse and can phase gren out just before torrent as well if whirlwind.

- I feel like a lot of he time, torrent sash support gren is running scald, shuriken + 1-2 more supporting moves. Scald into two hits of shuriken will always be able to KO tapu koko. Though its never an ideal matchup due to volt/uturn. Torrent Boosted Shuriken is also important for KOing a boosted Mega Blaziken. There are a lot of just general sash gren, but if you are running taunt or taunt + toxic/spike, you probably aren't running HP Fire or Hydro Cannon. Scizor hates scald anyways and ferrothorn (gren is often paired with zard anyways who loves seeing both), although gren does lose the lead matchup, lead sash gren is more about actually stopping your opponent gaining much momentum from the lead slot (preventing your opponent from setting up, stealth rocking etc.). Hydro Cannon gives a free turn to the opponent, it can be good to use if you have already used your Z in Waterium-Z sets, but rarely see it used in battle asides from that. Ice beam/Dark Pulse are definitely things commonly there tho.

- On sub torrent waterium-z, I think it is worth noting that greninja can and does run triple water move (scald, shuriken, hydro cannon).

- Id be tempted to say that sash is even the most common protean sweeper atm. The downside of LO is it gives away you aren't Z/Sash allowing your opponent to play around it easier, of course it does come with its power advantage. Sash is just so excellent on greninja.

I talked with chemcoop a bit about this, I've got a number of changes but I think this ultimately makes the Protean set much cleaner. It may be justifiable to split Waterium Z Protean into its own set but I'm not sure it's different enough from Sash/LO Protean to need it, we can leave it up to discussion. Comments are in bold, consider this a formal first check.

[Overview]

Greninja's stats may seem subpar, but much like any acomplished ninja, it's second to none at assassination thanks to a wide variety of unique tools! The most prominent of these tools is Protean, which changes Greninja's typing to match it's current attack. This is a game-changing ability that gives it STAB on every attack in the game, more than making up for its mediocre offenses. Greninja isn't limited to just type-changing shenigans, since it also happens to be by far the best user of the ability, Torrent, the game has to offer, being able to anihilate most offensive Pokemon with a Torrent boosted Hydro Vortrex from Hydro Canon. Combine this with Greninja's incredible Speed stat that places it above Naganadel and Mega Salamence, and this makes the silent assassin is among the deadliest offensive threats in the metagame!

All is not perfect for Greninja, however. Greninja may be a deadly offensive threat, but it has very lackluster defensive stats that make it very difficult to switch-in. Even with Protean or Torrent doing a good job of making up for Greninja's low offensive stats, it still has a habit of just missing out on important KOs for neutral Pokemon, and doesn't do particularly well against stall teams, meaning Greninja is a Pokemon that can be hard to use recklessly.

This is how I would clean up the slashes. Grass Knot and Grassium Z seem better left to Other Options, though a Grass Knot mention is potentially fair in set comments. I don't think U-turn is super worth it outside of Scarf sets. Also re-ordered moves slightly. Waterium Z Protean might warrant its own set though I don't think it's necessary, up to discussion.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Ice Beam is a fantastic STAB option on Greninja, letting it KO many prominent threats such as Landorus-T, Naganadel, Mega Salamence, and Thundurus-T. Water Shuriken is a good priority move that has the potential to do a lot of damage to to its multi-hit nature. It helps Greninja pick off weakened Blaziken, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Excadrill, and other offensive threats. Dark Pulse is the best shot Greninja has against Aegislash and Mega Metagross. It will also prevent Cresselia from walling Greninja, and the flinch chance can come in handy. If Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor are serious problems, Hidden Power Fire can be used to deal with them. Hidden Power Fire is also notable for allowing a healthy Greninja to survive any attack a Focus Sash Kartana throws at it.

For the last slot, going mixed with Gunk Shot can be a good choice for OHKOing Tapu Lele, 2HKOing Tapu Fini, and blasting the less common Water / Fairy-types, Azumarill and Primarina. Grass Knot is a reliable way to OHKO Hippowdon, and it hits Tyranitar as hard as Hydro Pump. Scald is a reliable Water-type attack with a chance to burn, while Hydro Pump is the riskier, but stronger attack to use. Mention that Hydro Pump is primarily used on Waterium Z sets. Surf works as a mid-way option between the two if Scald's burn chance isn't appealing for the team. Although it comes at the cost of coverage, U-turn is also a reasonable choice for breaking Mimikyu's Disguise safely and scouting your foe's reaction to Greninja. Finally, if using Focus Sash, Rock Tomb is a reasonable choice to give Greninja some speed control and a way to deal serious damage to Charizard formes and Volcarona. I don't really see this on Sash much but I can give a pass to the Rock Tomb mention here.

Set Details
========

The most important decsion (typo) to make is choosing Greninja's item. Life Orb is the most general purpose item, giving Greninja some signifigant boosted damage. I'll echo the sentiment that Sash is the best general purpose item as reflected in the suggested changes, LO is good but I do think Sash is the safest to use and most annoying to play against. For example, Dark Pulse now has a 75% shot of OHKOing Mega Metagross with Stealth Rock up, Grass Knot now 2HKOs Assault Vest Tyranitar, and Gunk Shot now OHKOs offensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock damage. Grass may not be known for being a great offensive typing, but it notably allows Greninja to obilerate bulky Water-types such as Tapu Fini with Bloom Doom. Waterium Z also works well if using Hydro Pump to give Greninja a powerful Water-type STAB with Hydro Vortex. Focus Sash transforms Greninja into an excellent lead that pressures common foes like Landorus-T, thanks to the ensurance of living at least one attack.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used mid to late game, since missing out on a KO can lead to disaster for the amphibious assassin. Since this is one of Greninja's most unpredictable sets, you can easily force out Pokemon who are weak to its common moves such as Ice Beam, and predict the switch to gain an edge with Greninja's less common moves such as Hidden Power Fire or Grass Knot. Greninja's knack for forcing switches can also make it a good candidate to double switch with.

When using Focus Sash Greninja, using Greninja early in the game becomes a much more feasible task. Since Greninja excels in forcing switches, consider using a move that predicts its switch-in.

Team Options
========

Since Greninja is so frail, Pokemon with U-turn and Volt Switch are a great way to get it in unharmed. Landorus-T is an excellent choices with a diverse amount of options, being able to also play a supportive role to set up Stealth Rock (missing word), use Assault Vest to sponge hits against Tapu Koko, and it can even run Knock Off to punish Porygon2 switch ins for Greninja. Rotom-H is another great choice, being a good check to Tapu Koko, and being able to use Trick to scare off Porygon2. Landorus-T and Rotom-H are particularly notable for underspeeding a wide variety of threats that Greninja can punish, but faster options such as Tapu Koko and Thundurus-T are also good choices.

While most offensive Pokemon appreciate this, residual damage in particular is key to Greninja's success as a cleaner rather than just a revenge killer. Stealth Rock support is the easiest way to achieve this, and Pokemon that can help against Tapu Koko, Choice Scarfed Eelectric-types such as Thundurus-T are particualy good choices. Hippowdon is notable for kicking up a Sandstorm for even more residual damage, while Ferrothorn does an excellent job at defeating Tapu Koko that lack Hidden Power Fire.

Moves
========

-Sub gets you into Torrent range, is a safer way to punish switch-outs.

-Hydro Cannon does absurd damage with its Z move into Torrent range. It'll OHKO Blaziken after SR, and a 68% chance against Mega after SR. Can be used as a last ditch move too. To give a picture of its power, Z-Torrent Cannon does over 50% to Ferrothorn!

-Ice Beam hits Mega Salamence, Naganadel, and Garchomp, also ensures you aren't totally walled by certain Grass-types.

-Water Shuriken gives Greninja some priority to pick off some threats (especially with torrent boost). Also nice for nailing Blaziken after the Z-Hydro if they survive (usually without SR)

-Dark Pulse is a secondary stab that hits Aegislash harder.

-Not sure about this, but I've seen some U-turn ones as well (probably for Mimikyu lol), and HP Fire ones. I don't mind mentioning them but I've never used either of these on Torrent Greninja, so need some feedback. I'd just leave the main set as is, SubTorrent is a bit detached from the rest of the sets and I think it's best to not consider too many coverage options.

Set Details
========

-Waterium Z EVs blah blah blah I'll keep this as short as possible

Usage Tips
========

-While an unexpected Substitute can be bad news for Greninja's more flismy switch-ins, using this Greninja as a lead is pretty risky since you might just waste your sub.

-Mid game it excels however, especially when you know what mons your opponent brought. This Greninja is extremely difficult to check with offensive mons because Z-Hydro Cannon is so powerful. It's capable of cleaning up late game too like most Greninja.

-With Torrent, Hydro Canon on its own is still very powerful. When using this though, make sure set up sweepers are gone or you can easily check them, or you'll be severely punished due to the recharge.

Team Options
========

-Volt turn is even better here because they can help scout your foes team, so you'll know when to put up a sub.

-While even these foes take Torrent Z Cannon hard, you'll want some checks to bulky waters (mainly Tapu Fini), and Ferrothorn too. Thundurus-T is a good option for hitting Tapu Fini (especially bulky Thunds), and can use Focus Blast to hit Ferrothorn hard. Also helps vs Tapu Koko. Fire-types like Megazard and Blaziken help vs Ferrothorn and have ways of luring and dealing lots to Tapu Fini. If you really want to mess up Fini, Tapu Bulu can work.

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

-Scald is the generic good water move that can burn, but Surf is more powerful and has better synergy with Toxic.

-Taunt is cool for stopping Stealth Rock and certain support moves like TR from Porygon2

-Toxic is excellent at crippling Porygon2 and some other bulky mons

-Hydro Cannon is really powerful if you're using Torrent

-Hidden Power Fire does good stuff vs Ferrothorn especially if using protean

-Dark Pulse hits Aegislash harder than Scald

-Spikes can be used to break sashes, Tspikes can mess with some defensive mons too.

Set Details
========

-Torrent and Protean have their pros and cons. Torrent is great for Hydro Cannon BS, and is a good choice if you only have water attacks. Protean's type changing can come in handy tho, such as say, surviving some hits if sash is broken (I may deslash protean tho since this was made with torrent in mind)

Usage Tips
========

-this greninja is a pretty good lead because of sash and greninja's habbit of forcing stuff out. doesn't usually sweep late game like a regular Greninja can tho

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

-With scarf greninja can revenge kill cool stuff like dd mence, +1 naganadel, tapu koko, etc.

-rock slide blasts the crap outta volcarona and megazard y, can get tasty flinches too. also notable for 2HKOing Araquanid switch-ins if you really hate that thing.

-ice beam is needed for dem dragons and lando.

-gunk shot is for fairies. it smashes tapus (well fini can survive but still), and is actually the most powerful move in the set. accuracy can bite tho

-u-turn lets you get away from Mimikyu and deal decent chip damage when you want to get away from stuff.

-hydro pump is the "screw you blaziken and excadrill" move, does more to hippo and mamoswine too.

-low kick might get delsashed, but it does more to mega kangaskhan and ferrothorn than any other move. also does a bit less to mega lopunny than gunk shot, but always hits which is a plus. Also does good damage to Snorlax.

-this is low usae, but Waterfall usually OHKOs Mega Blaziken after SR and always hits, which is cool.

Set Details
========

-filler filler filler

Usage Tips
========

-with u-turn you can use this early game, but note that this can give away greninja's choice scarf surprise early, which is a bummer.

-do your best to keep the scarf a secret, it lets greninja get surprise kills on tons fasters tapus, speed boosting sweepers, etc.

-that being said this greninja is good at revenge killing stuff, so if you need to make the obvious play to save your team from disaster, don't hesitate.

-since it has scarf, this greninja has way bigger issues against bulky mons like porygon2 and ferrothorn. so against stall teams and some more balanced types you may want to bench it.

Team Options
========

-SR makes life much easier for this greninja, since it often JUST misses out on koing stuff like naganadel and blaziken without it. insert list of usual suspects here

-porygon2 and ferrothorn are defensive mons that will be a huge pain in the ass. kartana can also be very threatening to this set compared to other gregs. megazard x can be really cool here for scaring the steely grasses, and putting less pressure on greninja to surprise tapu koko. dangerous special set up sweepers like volcarona can mess up non twave P2 (who also blasts ferrothorn duh). mega lopunny is cool for hitting all these mons hard.

[Other Options]

Along with the aforementioned Grass Knot / Grassium Z, I would also mention Low Kick here instead. Low Kick isn't usually worth it but LO Low Kick hurts Snorlax and Kangaskhan a lot which seems worth a quick mention.

-Z-Happy Hour can turn Greninja into a surprise sweeper, but this can be tough to set up even with the defensive boosts, and its a really rare japanese only event I have never actually seen this so I'm unsure it's worth listing as an option

-the torrent sash set can set up spikes and tspikes. I was actually gonna slash these in, but they seem to have really low usage. willing to change my mind on this though

-icy wind is another speed control option, but rock tomb hits more pressing things and ice beam deals with its threats better. Don't think this is worth it, Rock Tomb is rare outside of Scarf anyway

[Checks and Counters]

**Porygon2**: Porygon2 only fears Torrent boosted Hydro Vortex assualts. Otherwise, it's bulk is often too much for Greninja to handle, letting it easily status it or deal good damage to Greninja's soft Special Defense.

**Araquanid**: Unless Greninja has access to a Rock-type attack or Gunk Shot, it won't be doing very much damage to Araquanid, whose Water-type attacks still deal massive damage despite the resistance.

**Faster Pokemon**: Tapu Koko is chief among Greninja's problems due to its superior speed, though they must watch out for Choice Scarf Gunk Shot. Choice Scarf Thundurus-T, Choice Scarf Rotom-W, and Mega Manectric are also problematic for similar reasons. Hitting Greninja's weaknesses isn't even needed most of the time due to its poor defensesive stats, so most Choice Scarf Pokemon are problematic so long as they avoid Focus Sash Greninja.

**Mimikyu**: Like many offensive Pokemon, Mimikyu will easily revenge kill Greninja as long as it has Disguise up. Even without it, a healthy Mimikyu can survive regular attacks from Greninja in most cases.

**Ferrothorn**: Any Greninja that lack Hidden Power Fire or Low Kick will have severe problems muscling past Ferrothorn. However, note that a Torrent boosted Hydro Vortex coming from Hydro Cannon does over 50% to physically defensive Ferrothorn.

**Mega Kangaskhan**: Mega Kangaskhan's good bulk and ability let it bust through Greninja fairly easily, though Low Kick and Torrent sets can still threaten to deal a lot of damage.

**Breloom**: While Breloom is easily KOed by Greninja, it's access to Mach Punch can pick off Greninja early, especially before Protean kicks in.

Psynergy I finally implemented your stuff, sorry it took so long! Just a few notes

- I slashed in Toxic Spikes on the Torrent set (yeah it was orginally only a Torrent set in the first place, but I got tangled in slashitist lol). Main reason is that it as 2% usage this season, pretty close to Hydro Pump's 4% usage. Might remove it tho, not sure yet

-Main reason Z-Happy Hour is in other options is twofold: it used to be a set, and because I actually tested it out. Its... usable tbh.

Anyways, feel free to give it another check to make sure things are alright now!

I FINALLY got the motivation to finish this off, when I should have 2 weeks ago. Sorry about that, don't really have any grand excuse beyond "I've been playing too much Pokemon" ironically lol.

Anyways, this is fully written up now, and Psynergy checked this a while ago on Discord, so this needs one more check till it can finally go onsite!

For the most part this already looks really good. I think there are only a few minor changes to make to finish this off; once these are implemented consider this QC 2/2. Changes are in Bold, removals are in Strikethrough, and suggestions or comments are in Bold Italics.

[Overview]

Greninja's stats may seem subpar, but much like any accomplished (spelling) ninja, it's second to none at assassination thanks to a wide variety of unique tools! The most prominent of these tools is Protean, which changes Greninja's typing to match it's current attack. This is a game-changing ability that gives it STAB on every attack in the game, more than making up for its mediocre offenses. Greninja isn't limited to just type-changing shenanigans (spelling), as it is also the best user of the ability Torrent that Battle Spot Singles has to offer, being able to annihilate (spelling) most offensive Pokemon with a Torrent boosted Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon. Combine this with Greninja's incredible Speed stat that places it above Naganadel and Mega Salamence, and this makes the silent assassin is among the deadliest offensive threats in the metagame!

(Obviously I'm not a GP but it might be worth giving these first paragraphs another once over for spelling and such since I ran into several errors just trying to look at making the phrase above more precise in relation to commentary about its place in the meta.)

Finally, if using Focus Sash, Rock Tomb is a reasonable choice to give Greninja some speed control and a way to deal serious damage to Charizard formes and Volcarona.

Set Details
========

The most important choice to make is choosing Greninja's item. Focus Sash has the most devestating potential consequences, making Greninja an excellent lead that pressures common foes such as Landorus-T, thanks to living at least one attack. Life Orb gives Greninja some signifigant boosted damage. For example, Dark Pulse now has a 75% shot of OHKOing Mega Metagross with Stealth Rock up, Hydro Pump now 2HKOs Assault Vest Tyranitar, and Gunk Shot now OHKOs offensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock damage. Waterium Z also works well if using Hydro Pump to give Greninja a powerful Water-type STAB with Hydro Vortex.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is also extremely customizable, and as such is a good user of tech moves that cover team weaknesses.

When using Focus Sash Greninja, using Greninja early in the game becomes a much more feasible task. Since Greninja excels in forcing switches, consider using a move that predicts its switch-in.

Team Options

Since Greninja is so frail, Pokemon with U-turn and Volt Switch are a great way to get it in unharmed. [SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

This Greninja attempts to bust through bulky foes with powerful Torrent attacks. Substitute is key to this tactic, safely whittling Greninja's HP into the 25% range for Torrent to activate. Hydro Cannon, when paired with Waterium Z and a Torrent boost, becomes an extremely powerful attack. Even foes that resist this powerful Hydro Vortex, such as Ferrothorn and Tapu Fini will take over 50% from it! Additionally, Hydro Vortex also OHKOs Blaziken through its Protect after Stealth Rock damage, removing its ability to revenge kill Greninja easily. Water Shuriken further accentuates Greninja's power against Blaziken, KOing Mega Blaziken after a Hydro Vortex through its Protect, in addition to picking off weakened threats. Ice Beam is useful for dealing massive damage to Mega Salamence, Naganadel, Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Serperior. Dark Pulse meanwhile, is a secondary STAB attack that does good damage to Aegislash, and has a chance to flinch.

Set Details
========

Greninja should always have Waterium Z, which makes Hydro Cannon less risky. 4 HP EVs are also required so Greninja can get to its Torrent boost range with 3 uses of Substitute, with the rest going into Special Attack and Speed for maximum power. Timid is the nature of choice as well, as Greninja needs to outspeed Mega Salamence and Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========

The general tactic is to use Substitute three times against offensive Pokemon, which will put Greninja into Torrent range. Using Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon is the best option when in Torrent range in most cases. While Hydro Vortex is extremely powerful when boosted by Torrent, some bulkier switch-ins to Greninja such as Ferrothorn will still survive it, so it's usually best to save Greninja for mid to late game, where such threats are in KO range.

With Torrent, Hydro Canon on its own is still very powerful. When using this though, make sure set up sweepers are gone or you can easily check them, or you'll be severely punished due to the recharge.

Team Options
========

Users of U-turn and Volt Switch are extremely useful for Greninja, since not only do these moves help scout your opponent's team to determine when to set up a Substitute more easily, it'll also get Greninja safely in. Good examples of such Pokemon that pair well with Greninja include Landorus-T, Rotom-H, Thundurus-T, Zapdos, and Scizor.

Despite the power of Hydro Vortex hitting these Pokemon hard, it's a good idea to have checks to bulky Water-types such as Tapu Fini, and Ferrothorn and Snorlax in particular. Thundurus-T hits Tapu Fini hard, and smash Ferrothorn with Focus Blast, while helping against Tapu Koko, a potential revenge killer. Mega Charizard X and Y, and Blaziken do well against Ferrothorn and dealing massive damage to Snorlax, and are notable for having ways around Tapu Fini. If bulky Water-types are especially problematic, Tapu Bulu does well against Tapu Fini and Mega Gyarados, and can deal heavy damage to Snorlax.

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Unlike other Focus Sash Greninja, this set focuses on Greninja's ability to be disruptive to leads. Taunt is an excellent way to stop gameplans, such as setting up Stealth Rock or Trick Room, and can come in handy later to stop certain Pokemon from setting up. Greninja needs a reliable Water-type STAB to use when Torrent is activated, and Scald is a perfect fit with the bonus of potentially burning targets. Surf is also a reasonable option due to being slightly more powerful, and not interfearing with Toxic and Toxic Spikes. Water Shuriken is a useful priority attack that can easily pick off lead Blaziken after a hit from Scald, and can let Greninja sweep late game when Torrent is activated.

The last moveslot is very team specfic. U-turn gives Greninja some scouting capability, and safely lets it break Mimikyu's Disguise. (U-Turn is almost never seen on this set, with any of the three slashes above being more common.) Ice Beam is useful for hitting Dragon-types like Mega Salamence, Naganadel, and Garchomp hard, and does good damage to Breloom and Serperior as well. Dark Pulse is a reliable STAB attack that has a chance to flinch and isn't affected by Mega Charizard Y's Sun. Finally, Toxic may seem strange, but it is useful for crippling bulky switch-ins such as Porygon2 and Snorlax. On a similar note, Toxic Spikes can be set up to break Focus Sashes and inflict Toxic Poison on an entire team when both layers are set up. If breaking Focus Sash on grounded Pokemon is the only concern, Spikes is a reasonable option as well. Finally, Dark Pulse is a reliable STAB attack that has a chance to flinch, and isn't affected by Mega Charizard Y's Sun.

Set Details
========

A Timid nature with maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed is needed to outspeed major threats such as Mega Salamence and Naganadel, and deal as much damage as possible. Since this Greninja usually focuses on using its STAB attacks, Torrent is a better option than Protean to take advantage of the extra power on its Water moves if it is brought down to its Sash or otherwise gets to low health. since it can allow Greninja to potentially clean up teams late game.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used early game, since Focus Sash will allow it to reliably survive attacks, and it does a great job of stopping teams from executing their early game plans with Taunt. However, Greninja doesn't need to be used suicidely, since with Torrent, it has the potential to sweep offensive teams late game, especially if Stealth Rock isn't set up. However, note that due to its lower coverage than Protean Greninja, this Greninja isn't as focused on late game sweeping as usual.

Team Options
========

Consider Pokemon that benefit from Steath Rock being off the field, since this Greninja does such a great job of stopping it early game, as well as set-up sweepers that benefit from bulky targets being Taunted. Volcarona is an excellent example, since it's much easier to set up Quiver Dance with no Stealth Rock and when opponents such as Porygon2 and Hippowdon cannot inflict it with status or phaze it. Mega Charizard Y and Mega Charizard X are also reasonable options, though note that Mega Charizard Y's Sun will weaken Greninja's Water-type moves. Mega Salamence is especially notable since this Greninja can cripple Porygon2 with Toxic, but Landorus-T, despite dealing with Stealth Rock well, can also work well here.

Gunk Shot hits Fairy-types that would usually wall Greninja, such as Tapu Fini, and OHKOs Tapu Lele and Tapu Koko. Ice Beam allows Greninja to effectively revenge kill Landorus-T, and Dragon-types. U-turn gives Greninja a way to break Mimikyu's disguise without putting itself in danger, and can work well when leading. Rock Slide allows Greninja to revenge kill Volcarona and Mega Charizard Y, deal massive damage to Mega Charizard X, and 2HKO Araquanid switch-ins. Rock Tomb is less powerful, but its Speed control can be useful.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Attack are needed so Greninja can revenge kill its targets. A Naive nature is prefered since this Greninja needs Ice Beam to KO Dragon-types, and it leaves Greninja less vulnerable to priority attacks compared to Hasty. Protean is required since Greninja's attacks are fairly weak without a STAB boost.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja functions best when its item is hidden, since this can let it get surprise revenge kills on speed boosting sweepers and Tapu Koko. While Using U-turn early game gives this Greninja good team-scouting potential, and its increased speed allows it to revenge kill speed boosting threats like +1 Mega Salamence, Mega Charizard-Y, and Naganadel. consider using it against Pokemon that are naturally slower against Greninja, to keep the Choice Scarf hidden. In general though, if a Speed boosting Pokemon threatens to sweep your team, revenge killing them will take priority over keeping Choice Scarf hidden. (I think the idea of trying to keep the Scarf hidden is a bit overblown here, especially when using U-Turn. I won't speak for anyone else, but when I see U-Turn on Protean Greninja I immediately assume Scarf unless I have other tangible evidence that proves otherwise, and since most other sets tend special on Greninja the damage calcs tend to give it away anyway. Probably the most common scenarios where the surprise factor is helpful are lead matchups against Tapu Koko or other Scarf users such as Landorus-T anyway, so in that sense I don't think there's usually too much to worry about on that front regardless.)

Since this Greninja uses Choice Scarf and is physically based, bulky Pokemon such as Porygon2, Chansey, and Ferrothorn are massive problems for this Greninja, so consider benching it when facing stall teams.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock support makes this Greninja's life much easier, since normally it can just miss out on KOing important threats like Naganadel. Good, bulky candidates for the job include Landorus-T, Hippowdon, and Ferrothornm, but more offensive setters such as Garchomp can also work.

Defensive Pokemon that often show up outside of stall teams such as Porygon2 and Ferrothorn are also big issues for this Greninja, and Kartana is more threatening than usual due to this Greninja's focus on physical attacking. This makes Mega Charizard X an excellent teammate, since it can easily set up on Ferrothorn, and scare out Kartana that lack Giga Impact, and also puts less pressure on Greninja to surprise Tapu Koko. Volcarona is another awesome Fire-type that has the bonus of setting up against Porygon2 that lack a way to inflict paralysis. Mega Loppuny and Blaziken are less bulky, but speedy teammate that can threaten many of Choice Scarf Greninja's threats as well.

[Other Options]

Grass Knot, when paired with Grassium Z, can get surprised KOs on foes like Tapu Fini, Rotom-W, and Swampert, hits more often than Hydro Pump, and can give Greninja a useful defensive typing. However, it offers much lesser coverage than Greninja's other options. Spikes can be set up to destroy Focus Sashes, but being unable to hit Flying-type and Levitating Pokemon gives less of a reward than using a Stealth Rock Pokemon. and it doesn't inflict status like Toxic Spikes. Toxic Spikes can be used but is generally outclassed by Toxic. Happy Hour, when paired with Normalium Z, can be used to boost all of Greninja's stats, giving it sweeping capabilities. However, Greninja still isn't particularly bulky even after the defensive boosts, and its from a very rare Japanese only event from Generation 6. (I agree with Psynergy that the Happy Hour mention might not be worth it. I don't think I've ever seen this on cart, or anywhere actually except for a few encounters on the PS low ladder.)

**Faster Pokemon**: Tapu Koko is chief among Greninja's problems due to its superior speed and Volt Switch, though they must watch out for Choice Scarf Gunk Shot. Choice Scarf Thundurus-T, Choice Scarf Rotom-W, and Mega Manectric are also problematic for similar reasons. Hitting Greninja's weaknesses isn't even needed most of the time due to its poor defensive (typo) stats, so most Choice Scarf Pokemon are problematic so long as they avoid Focus Sash Greninja.

BTW, torrent activates at 1/3, not at 1/4. Generally you don't want to Substitute down to 1% as opposed to 26% to put yourself in priority range, but given how commonly time-stalling tactics (toxic, curse, etc.) tends to find their way onto players' teams, Sub Greninja happens to have a good synergy there and it is nice to have the option to stall an extra turn if necessary.

Thanks a lot greilmercenary9 , implemented your stuff! Also yeah before you ask: I must have forgot to put the overview and checks in spellchecker, already squashed another typo after you brought that up! Also, thank you marilli , I totally forgot that Torrent is 1/3 activation. Guess Metronome battles and all those pinch berries there poisoned my mind lol.

This is finally ready for grammar checks!

This is an amcheck! AH= Add hyphen, AP = Add period, AC = Add comma. RH and RC are Remove for the same.

[Overview]

Greninja's stats may seem mediocre, but much like any accomplished ninja, it's second to none at assassination thanks to a wide variety of unique tools! The most prominent of these tools is its ability Protean, which changes Greninja's typing to match it's its current attack's type. This is a game-changing ability that gives it STAB on every attack in the game, which more than making makes up for its mediocre offenses. Greninja isn't limited to just type-changing shenanigans,(RC) as it is also the best user of the ability Torrent that in Battle Spot Singles has to offer, being able to annihilate most offensive Pokemon with a Torrent-boosted (AH) Hydro Vortex from Hydro Canon. Combine this with Greninja's incredible Speed stat,(AC) that which places it above (I'd probably go for something like "which allows it to outspeed Naganadel and Mega Salamence," if that's appealing to you) Naganadel and Mega Salamence, and this makes the silent assassin is among the deadliest offensive threats in the metagame!

All is not perfect for Greninja, however (A filler sentence, so it could be replaced with something like: "Greninja may... threat, but it is held back by very lackluster..."). Greninja may be a deadly offensive threat, but it has very lackluster defensive stats that make it very difficult to switch-in (RH). Even with Protean or Torrent making up for Greninja's low offensive stats, it still has a habit of just missing misses out on important KOs for against neutral Pokemon it hits for neutral damage,(RC) and doesn't do particularly well against stall teams, meaning Greninja is a Pokemon that can be hard to use recklessly. (maybe "... that should not be used recklessly"?)

Moves
========

Ice Beam is a fantastic STAB (Since Protean's working was mentioned before, I don't think "STAB" should be mentioned here again, especially since you don't do so later on when you mention Dark Pulse) option on Greninja, letting it KO many prominent threats such as Landorus-T, Naganadel, Mega Salamence, and Thundurus-T. Water Shuriken is a good priority move that has the potential to do a lot of damage to due to its multi-hit nature. It helps Greninja pick off weakened Blaziken, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Excadrill, and other offensive threats. Dark Pulse is the best shot (move?) Greninja has against Aegislash and Mega Metagross. It will also prevents Cresselia from walling Greninja,(RC) and the flinch chance can come in handy. If Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor are serious problems, Hidden Power Fire can be used to deal with them. Hidden Power Fire is also notable for allowing a healthy Greninja to survive any attack a Focus Sash Kartana throws at it (maybe add "thanks to Protean"?).

For the last slot, going mixed with Gunk Shot can be a good choice for OHKOing Tapu Lele, 2HKOing Tapu Fini, and blasting the less common Water / Fairy-types,(RC)—(AH) Azumarill and Primarina. Scald is a reliable Water-type attack, while Hydro Pump is a riskier, more powerful option that should be used with Waterium Z. (AP) (I think this improves the sentence by not making it too long), while Surf works as a mid-way option between the two if Scald's burn chance isn't appealing for the team. Finally, if using Focus Sash, Rock Tomb is a reasonable choice to give Greninja some speed control and a way to deal serious damage to Charizard formes and Volcarona.

Set Details
========

This Greninja set is extremely customizable, so using specfic specific moves or items to cover team weaknesses is worthy of consideration. Focus Sash has can have (since you talk about potential consequences) the most devestating devastating potential consequences, making Greninja an excellent lead that can pressures common foes such as Landorus-T, thanks to living surviving at least one attack from them. Life Orb gives Greninja some signifigant boosted a significant boost in damage. For example, Dark Pulse now (not sure if the "now"s have to be removed, but Idt they're necessary) has a 75% shot of OHKOing Mega Metagross with Stealth Rock up, Hydro Pump now 2HKOs Assault Vest Tyranitar, and Gunk Shot now OHKOes offensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock damage. Waterium Z also works well if using Hydro Pump to give Greninja a powerful Water-type STAB with Hydro Vortex. If using only Special Attacks special attacks and a Timid nature, put the remaining 4 EVs in Special Defense to survive offensive Mega Gengar's Sludge Bomb.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used mid- to or late-game (AH), since missing out on a KO can lead to disaster for the amphibious assassin. Since this is one of Greninja's most unpredictable sets, you can easily force out Pokemon who are weak to its common moves,(AC) such as Ice Beam, and predict the switch to gain an edge with by using Greninja's less common moves such as Hidden Power Fire or Grass Knot. Greninja's knack for forcing switches can also makes it a good candidate to double switch with.

When using With a Focus Sash Greninja, using Greninja early in the game becomes a much more feasible task. Since Greninja excels in at forcing switches, consider using a move that predicts predicting its switch-in and using an appropriate move.

Team Options
========

Since Greninja is so frail, Pokemon with U-turn and Volt Switch are a great way to get it in unharmed. Landorus-T is an excellent choices with a diverse amount of options,(RC)(AH) being it's able to also play a supportive role to set up Stealth Rock, use Assault Vest to sponge hits against from Tapu Koko, and it can even or even run Knock Off to punish Porygon2 switch-ins(AH) for Greninja. Rotom-H is another great choice, being as it's (change because "being" was used too often; thought a change might be better. "being" is the best word to bridge either, though) a good check to Tapu Koko, and can being able to use Trick to scare off Porygon2. Landorus-T and Rotom-H are also particularly notable for underspeeding a wide variety of threats that Greninja can punish, but faster options,(AC) such as Tapu Koko and Thundurus-T,(AC) are also good choices.

While most offensive Pokemon appreciate this residual damage (but on the aside, shouldn't that be something like "chip damage"?), residual damage in particular it is key to Greninja's success as a cleaner rather than just a revenge killer. Stealth Rock support from the likes of Landorus-T is the easiest way to achieve this, and Pokemon that can help against Tapu Koko,(RC) and Choice Scarfed Eelectric-types such as Thundurus-T are particualy particularly good choices (do you mean Hippowdon and Ferro are the ones? Otherwise this probably requires an example to remove ambiguity too). Hippowdon is notable for kicking can set up a Sandstorm for to rack up even more residual damage, while Ferrothorn does an excellent job at defeating Tapu Koko that lack Hidden Power Fire.

Moves
========

This Greninja attempts to bust through bulky foes with powerful Torrent-powered attacks. Substitute is the key to this tactic, safely whittling down Greninja's HP into the one-third (AH) range for Torrent to activate. Hydro Cannon, when paired with Waterium Z and a Torrent boost, becomes an extremely powerful attack. Even foes that resist this powerful Hydro Vortex, such as Ferrothorn and Tapu Fini,(AC) will take over 50% damage from it! Ice Beam is useful for dealing deals massive damage to Mega Salamence, Naganadel, Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Serperior. Dark Pulse meanwhile, is a secondary STAB attack that does good damage to Aegislash,(RC) and has a chance to flinch.

Set Details
========

Greninja should always have Waterium Z, which makes Hydro Cannon less risky. 4 Special Defense EVs are needed to allow Greninja to survive a Sludge Bomb from offensive Mega Gengar. Timid is the nature of choice,(RC) since Greninja needs to outspeed Mega Salamence and Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========

The general tactic (maybe use "idea" instead of "tactic") is to use Substitute three times against offensive Pokemon, which will put Greninja into Torrent's range. Using Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon is the best option when in Torrent range in most cases. While Hydro Vortex is extremely powerful when boosted by Torrent, some bulkier switch-ins to Greninja such as Ferrothorn will still survive it, so it's usually best to save Greninja for mid- to or late-game(AH), where such threats are in KO range.

With Torrent, Hydro Canon on its own is still very powerful. When using this though it, make sure set up setup (P sure this should be "setup", but I didn't find anything on this) sweepers are either gone or easily checked by your team you can easily check them,(RC);(add semicolon) otherwise or you'll be severely punished due to the recharge.

Team Options
========

Users of U-turn and Volt Switch are extremely useful for to Greninja, since not only do these moves help scout your opponent's team to determine when to set up a Substitute more easily, it'll they also get Greninja in safely in. Good examples of such Pokemon that pair well with Greninja include Landorus-T, Rotom-H, Thundurus-T, Zapdos, and Scizor.

Despite the power of Hydro Vortex hitting these Pokemon hard, it's It is a good idea to have checks to bulky Water-types such as Tapu Fini, and Ferrothorn and Snorlax in particular even though Hydro Vortex hits them hard. Thundurus-T hits Tapu Fini hard, and smashes Ferrothorn with Focus Blast,(RC) while helping against Tapu Koko, a potential revenge killer. Mega Charizard X/Y and Y,(RC) and Blaziken do well against Ferrothorn,(AC) and dealing massive damage to Snorlax, and are notable for having have ways around Tapu Fini. If bulky Water-types are especially problematic, Tapu Bulu can be used as it does well against Tapu Fini and Mega Gyarados,(RC) and can deal heavy damage to Snorlax.

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Unlike other Focus Sash Greninja sets, this set focuses on Greninja's ability to be disruptive to disrupt opposing leads. Taunt is an excellent way to stop the opponent's (Obvious, but I thought it was necessary) gameplans,(RC) such as setting up Stealth Rock or Trick Room,(RC) and can come in handy later to stop certain other Pokemon from setting up. Greninja needs a reliable Water-type STAB to use when Torrent is activated, and Scald is a perfect fit with the bonus of potentially burning targets. Surf is also a reasonable option due to being slightly as it is slightly more powerful,(RC) and does not interfearing interfere with other statusing spreading. Water Shuriken is a useful priority attack that can easily pick off lead Blaziken after a hit from Scald,(RC) and can let Greninja sweep late-game(AH) when Torrent is (maybe better to use "would be activated" instead of "is") activated.

The last moveslot is very team-specific specfic. Ice Beam is useful for hitting Dragon-types like Mega Salamence, Naganadel, and Garchomp hard, and does good damage to Breloom and Serperior as well. Dark Pulse is a reliable STAB attack that has a chance to flinch,(RC) and isn't effected affected by Mega Charizard Y's Sun. Finally, Toxic may seem strange, but it's (Add apostrophe) useful for crippling bulky switch-ins such as Porygon2 and Snorlax.

Set Details
========

A Timid nature with maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed is needed to outspeed major threats such as Mega Salamence and Naganadel,(RC) and deal as much damage as possible. This Greninja usually focuses on using its STAB attacks,(RC).(AP) Torrent is a better option than Protean to take advantage of boosted Water-type attacks when Greninja is a low on health.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used best early-game(AH),(RC) since Focus Sash will allow it to reliably survive an attacks,(RC) and it does a great job of at stopping teams from executing their early-game(AH) plans with Taunt. However, Greninja doesn't need to be used suicidely, sacrificed early-game since,(AC) with Torrent, it has the potential to sweep offensive teams late-game(AH),(AC) especially if Stealth Rock isn't set up on your side. However, note that due to its lower coverage than in comparison to Protean Greninja, this Greninja isn't as focused (maybe "efficient" is a better fit?) on late-game(AH) sweeping as usual.

Team Options
========

Consider Pokemon that benefit from Stealth Rock being off the field, since this Greninja does such a great job of stopping prevents it early-game(AH), as well as set-up sweepers that benefit from bulky Pokemon being tTaunted. Volcarona is an excellent example, since it's much easier to— it can set up Quiver Dance with no Stealth Rock to chip at its HP and when oppoents no bulky opponents such as Porygon2 and Hippowdon can't to inflict it with status or phaze it due to Taunt. Mega Charizard X/Y and Mega Charizard X are also reasonable options, though but (variety's sake) note that Mega Charizard Y's Ssun (lowercase) will weaken Greninja's Water-type moves. Mega Salamence is an especially notable option since this Greninja can cripple Porygon2 with Toxic,(RC) but.(AP) Landorus-T, despite dealing with Stealth Rock well (not sure what you mean here), can also work well here.

Thanks Axial , you cleared out a lot of fluff. Much as I hate to admit it, I haven't gotten too much better at cutting that over the past 10 years!

As for the tone, I made it a bit more casual than normal mostly because there were some complaints about the more formal tone in a pretty major thread about analyses last year afaik, but I'll change it if another person chimes in about it.

Anyways, The Dutch Plumberjack I got this mofo ready for ya since you mentioning doing this on Discord after I check the AM check!

For example, Dark Pulse has a 75% shot of OHKOing Mega Metagross with Stealth Rock up, Hydro Pump now 2HKOs 2HKOes Assault Vest Tyranitar, and Gunk Shot now OHKOes offensive Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock damage.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used mid- or late-game, since missing out on a KO can lead to disaster for the amphibious assassin. Since this is one of Greninja's most unpredictable sets, you can easily force out Pokemon who that are weak to its common moves, such as Ice Beam, and predict the switch to gain an edge by using Greninja's less common moves such as Hidden Power Fire or and Grass Knot. Greninja's knack for forcing switches can also makes it a good candidate to double switch with.

With a Focus Sash, using Greninja early in the game becomes a much more feasible task. Since Greninja excels in at forcing switches, consider predicting its switch-in and using an appropriate move.

Team Options
========

Since Greninja is frail, Pokemon with U-turn and Volt Switch are a great way to get it in unharmed. Landorus-T is an excellent choice with diverse options, (comma) being able to play a supportive role to set up Stealth Rock, use Assault Vest to sponge hits from Tapu Koko, or even run Knock Off to punish Porygon2 switch-ins for Greninja. Rotom-H is another great choice, as it's a good check to Tapu Koko (RC) and can use Trick to scare off Porygon2.

Stealth Rock support from bulky setters such as Landorus-T is the easiest way to achieve this, and Pokemon that can help against Tapu Koko and Choice Scarfed Electric-types such as Thundurus-T are particularly good choices. Good examples include Hippowdon, which is notable for kicking up a Sandstorm to rack up even more residual damage, while and Ferrothorn, which does an excellent job at defeating Tapu Koko that lack Hidden Power Fire.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Greninja should always have Waterium Z, which makes Hydro Cannon less risky. 4 Special Defense EVs are needed to allow Greninja to survive a Sludge Bomb from offensive Mega Gengar. A Timid nature is the nature of choice since lets Greninja needs to outspeed Mega Salamence and Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========

The general idea is to use Substitute three times against offensive Pokemon, which will put Greninja into Torrent's range. Using Hydro Vortex from Hydro Cannon is the best option when in Torrent range in most cases. While Hydro Vortex is extremely powerful when boosted by Torrent, some bulkier switch-ins to Greninja such as Ferrothorn will still survive it, so it's usually best to save Greninja for mid- or late-game, where when such threats are in KO range.

With Torrent, Hydro Canon on its own is still very powerful. When using this move, make sure setup sweepers are either gone or easily checked by your team, (AC) or you'll be severely punished due to the recharge turn. Regardless, expect to lose Greninja the next turn if this doesn't end the match.

Team Options
========

Users of U-turn and Volt Switch are extremely useful for to Greninja, since not only do these moves help scout your opponent's team to determine when to set up a Substitute more easily, they also get Greninja in safely in.

Thundurus-T hits Tapu Fini hard (RC) and smashes Ferrothorn with Focus Blast while helping against Tapu Koko, a potential revenge killer. Mega Charizard X and Y (RC) and Blaziken do well against Ferrothorn, dealing deal massive damage to Snorlax, and are notable for having have ways around Tapu Fini. If bulky Water-types are especially problematic, Tapu Bulu can be used, (AC) as it does well against Tapu Fini and Mega Gyarados (RC) and can deal heavy damage to Snorlax.

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Surf is also a reasonable option, (AC) as it is slightly more powerful and does not interfere with other statusing status from teammates. Water Shuriken is a useful priority attack that can easily pick off lead Blaziken after a hit from Scald while letting as well as let Greninja sweep late-game when Torrent would be activated.

The last moveslot is team specific. (RH) Ice Beam is useful for hitting Dragon-types like Mega Salamence, Naganadel, and Garchomp hard (RC) and does good damage to Breloom and Serperior as well.

Set Details
========

A Timid nature with maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed is needed to outspeed major threats such as Mega Salamence and Naganadel and deal as much damage as possible. Since this Greninja usually focuses on using its STAB attacks, (comma) Torrent is a better option than Protean to take advantage of boosted Water-type attacks when Greninja is a low on health.

Usage Tips
========

This Greninja is best used early-game, (AC) since Focus Sash will allow it to survive an attack and it does a great job at stopping teams from executing their early-game plans with Taunt. However, Greninja doesn't need to be sacrificed early-game, (AC) since, with Torrent, it has the potential to sweep offensive teams late-game, especially if Stealth Rock isn't up on your side. However, note that due to its lower coverage in comparison to Protean Greninja, this Greninja isn't as effcient at late-game sweeping.

Team Options
========

Consider Pokemon that benefit from Stealth Rock being off the field, since this Greninja prevents it early-game, as well as set-up setup sweepers that benefit from bulky Pokemon being Taunted. Volcarona is an excellent example—it can easily set up Quiver Dance with no Stealth Rock to chip at its HP off the field and no bulky opponents foes such as Porygon2 and Hippowdon unable to inflict it with status or phaze it due to Taunt. Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y are also reasonable options, but note that Mega Charizard Y's sun will weaken Greninja's Water-type moves. Mega Salamence is an especially notable option, (AC) since this Greninja can cripple Porygon2 with Toxic. Landorus-T, having little issue with Stealth Rock can also work well here due to Greninja cripplining crippling common checks to it.

Choice Scarf may seem strange on such a fast Pokemon, but it allows Greninja to revenge kill many promimnent prominent speedy Pokemon, such as Tapu Koko, and Pokemon that boost their Speed, such as Naganadel, Volcarona, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Salamence.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Attack EVs are needed so Greninja can revenge kill its targets. A Naive nature is prefered preferred, since this Greninja needs Ice Beam to KO Dragon-types and it leaves Greninja less vulnerable to priority attacks compared to a Hasty nature. Protean is required since because Greninja's attacks are fairly weak without a STAB boost.

Usage Tips
========

Using U-turn early-game gives Greninja increased scouting potential, making it an excellent lead. Its increased Speed also makes Greninja a great revenge killer of Speed-boosting (AH) threats such as Mega Salamence, Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Naganadel. Since this Greninja uses Choice Scarf and is physically based, bulky Pokemon, such as Porygon2, Chansey, and Ferrothorn are massive problems for it, so consider benching it when facing stall teams.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock support helps ensure that Greninja does not miss KOing important threats like Naganadel. Good, bulky candidates such as include Landorus-T, Hippowdon, and Ferrothorn can provide Stealth Rock support, but more offensive setters such as Garchomp can also work.

Defensive Pokemon that often show up outside of stall teams, such as Porygon2 and Ferrothorn, (AC) are also big issues for this Greninja, and Kartana is more threatening than usual due to this Greninja's focus on physical attacks. These factors makes make Mega Charizard X an excellent teammate, since it easily sets up on Ferrothorn, forces out Kartana that lack Giga Impact, and also puts less takes pressure on off Greninja to surprise Tapu Koko. Volcarona is another awesome Fire-type that has the bonus of setting up against Porygon2 that lack a way to inflict paralysis. Mega Loppunny Lopunny and Blaziken are less bulky but speedy teammates that can threaten many of Choice Scarf Greninja's threats as well.

[Other Options]

Grass Knot, when paired with Grassium Z (RC) can get surprised KOs on foes like Tapu Fini, Rotom-W, and Swampert. It has better accuracy than Hydro Pump and can give Greninja a useful defensive typing. However, it offers much lesser coverage than Greninja's other options. Spikes can be set up to destroy Focus Sashes, but its inability to hit affect Flying-types and Pokemon with Levitate makes it less rewarding than using a Stealth Rock setter. Toxic Spikes is also usable, but it's generally outclassed by Toxic.

[Checks and Counters]

**Porygon2**: Porygon2 only fears a Torrent-boosted Hydro Vortex. Otherwise, it's its bulk is often too much for Greninja to handle, letting it punish Greninja with status or deal good damage to Greninja's soft Special Defense.

**Araquanid**: Unless Greninja carries a Rock-type attack or Gunk Shot, it won't be doing much damage to Araquanid, whose Water-type attacks deal massive damage despite Greninja's resistance to them.

**Faster Pokemon**: Tapu Koko is chief among Greninja's biggest (redundant) problems due to the former's its superior speed and access to Volt Switch, although it must watch out for Choice Scarf Greninja's Gunk Shot. Choice Scarf Thundurus-T, Choice Scarf Rotom-W, and Mega Manectric are also problematic for similar reasons. Hitting Greninja's weaknesses isn't even needed most of the time due to its poor defensive stats, so most Choice Scarf Pokemon are problematic so as long as it Greninja does not carry a Focus Sash.

Combine this with Greninja's incredible Speed stat, which allows it to outspeed Naganadel and Mega Salamence, and this puts the silent assassin is among the deadliest offensive threats in the metagame!

Moves
