The Raid Frontier
( Data Thread | Cheat Sheet and Vocations | Rewards )

Competitive battling sees trainers coaching their partners to the very pinnacle of their might, wielding such power as might scar the earth in the pursuit of greater self-mastery. However, there exists another type of battle, far-flung from the rules and regulations of civilized sport circuits. A battle where nurture contends with nature, where more than mere trophies hangs in the balance, and where true and unfettered power can be let loose!

The Raid Frontier tasks trainers to bring forth their partners both great and small, to form a greater whole and together topple mighty Boss Pokemon! Here, even the most niche ally can be a link in the chain of victory!

For Entry
  • Challenging the Raid Frontier costs JC, depending on the Raid challenged.
    • The JC cost of a raid can be found in the Data Thread.
Raid Summary
:ss/corviknight-gmax:
The Raid Frontier refers to a collective of utterly remote, far-flung locations where trainers can seek extremely powerful singular opponents known as Raid Bosses. These opponents will have hundreds of HP, multiple actions per turn, special resistances, and overwhelming additional effects. To break through these titanic foes, the challenger will need to have a tightly-synergized team with complementary strengths.

:sv/toxapex::sv/illumise::sv/vikavolt:
The challenger will assign each of their Pokemon a Role, specializing one each into defense, utility, or offense. If the challenger has defeated any Raids prior, they will have Vocations to enhance the performance of each of their Pokemon in their roles. Only by emphasizing their team's greatest strengths, and minimizing their weaknesses, will the challenger be able to prove victorious.

Patch History
  • 2023-Sep-20: Prepared for third-wave testing:
    • Reduced Step Count to 1, from 2.
    • Reduced most opponents' HP, to account for less steps.
    • Increased the multiple turns of most enemies, to threaten a bit more damage than second-wave tests.
    • Adjusted the test vocations for performance.
      • Pugilist changed to "Your attacks are Physical", from "Your attacks are x1.5 super-effective."
      • Revised several other vocations, but the above is the most notable.
      • Added three new testing vocations: :auspicious armor:Martyr, :protective pads:Rearguard, and :malicious armor:Blackguard
  • 2023-Aug-26: Heavily revised the raid "Vs. The Spectacular Spore-verlord".
    • Now features a set of three discrete phases, with adds paired with each raider.
  • 2023-Aug-24: Prepared for preliminary testing.

Raid Processing
Raid Battles work much like a typical Triples battle, except that the amount and power of the opposing team can vary greatly.

Raiding Vocations
The challenger must assign each of their three Pokemon, said to be "raiders", a unique Raid Role that specializes their performance within the Raid. Every raid party must sign up with one Pokemon assigned to each Role.

The roles are as follows:
:ability shield:Protector:aggron::blissey::garganacl:
Raids target the Protector with their most powerful and punishing attacks. Although this isn't technically an effect (but just a result of how the targeting method works), it is still a vital part of a well-built raid party. The Protector should be able to weather attacks using a combination of their typing, bulk, defensive boosts, and/or recovery.
:covert cloak:Supporter:ribombee::tinkaton::fidgit:
The raid party's Supporter has four (4) Substitutions, unlike the other roles, who have only one (1). This positions them as the party's primary line of defense against random chance, and it will be spending much of their time using utility actions to weaken or disrupt the Boss.
:punching glove:Aggressor:swoobat::charizard::raichu:
The raid party's Aggressor deals triple (yes, x3!) damage with hits to Bosses and to Minions. This gives the raid party the damage necessary to push through massive Bosses, some of whom can have upwards of a thousand HP, within their strict Enrage timers. The other two roles will spend much of their time protecting the Aggressor, allowing them to work uninterrupted to win the Raid!
Additionally, challengers may assign a Vocation to each of their raiders, out of the Vocations they've earned from prior Raids. Each Vocation has a powerful special effect that helps raiders overcome increasingly stronger bosses. Vocations are sorted into roles, and each can only be assigned to a raider of the correct role.

Raid Opponent Behavior
Each round, the referee will determine the opponents' orders using their predetermined behavior patterns, rather than piloting them directly. Opponents have sets of actions called "Behavior Sets", from which random actions will be rolled.

Actions in these Behavior Sets are often modified with special Behavior Modifiers. You can find a list here.

When rolling orders for raid Pokemon, only roll from among actions they could attempt. If a Pokemon has a pool of five actions, but can't attempt two of them, roll from among the remaining three. If no actions in the pool can be attempted, roll nothing and order nothing. (This typically results in Struggle.) Once the raid Pokemon's orders are rolled, their ability to attempt the rolled orders may change mid-round, just like a regular Pokemon's orders.

Raid Phases
Some Raids have multiple sections, called "Raid Phases". (Not to be confused with 2.1 "Phases of a Battle") Raids will spell out their Phase Progression in their data, underneath the profiles for Raid opponents. Raid Phases typically progress from the first listed Phase to the last listed Phase, in order. Some Raids offer conditionally-branching Phases.

Phases change at the end of the round's Switching Phase, if each Raid opponent has 0 or less remaining HP. When moving to a new Phase, all Raid opponents are returned to the Bench, and then the Raid opponents specified in the Phase data are set to their maximum HP (for that Phase, if specified) and put into play.

The player's victory condition is to reach the end of the Raid's Phase Progression. (Or one of the ends, as the case may be.)

Of course, some Raids will overwrite all or part of this behavior, depending on their needs.

Raid Opponents will often have Phase-dependant data in their profiles, such as different stats or Behavior Sets for different Raid Phases. If a Raid opponent with missing data for the current Raid Phase ends up in play, something is terribly wrong.

Putting It All Together
At first glance, the extra parameters on each Raid, and the slew of additional arena effects, can make Raids seem more complex than they really are. Find an example Raid, with descriptive annotation, within.
Vs. The Exasperated Example, the Bored Bufonidae!

Venusaur

Some opponents may feature non-standard abilities or custom traits, so be sure to review their information.

Phase 2 Substitution Behavior
At the start of your turns, IF the Weather is Sun THEN replace all instances of Sunny Day with Growth.

The raid opponent will get their orders, at random, from their behavior table. They'll take a number of turns in each round (and thus in each step), equal to the number of columns in their behavior. This example Venusaur will take 3 turns in every step.
The raid opponent may have multiple ordersets, but they rarely use more than one at a time. This Venusaur will use the upper orderset in Phase 1 and the lower orderset in Phase 2. In Phase 2, they would also additionally order with their Substitution.
When issuing orders to raid opponents, the referee will choose actions and targets as described by the column header. Often, the column will instruct the referee to roll an action randomly, and then manually select a target for the rolled action. Many other selection methods are possible, of course.
When prompted to choose, the referee should always prioritize the choice they feel most harms the challenger's odds of success.
Often as a Raid referee, you'll find all of your choices are bad—this happens with the most prepared challengers. If the choice doesn't matter, just choose at random.
In all cases, if a Raid opponent's order can't find a target, it will use default targeting. (See 8.3c "Target Legality Check")
For this Venusaur, an order post in Phase 2 could look like this:
Solar Blade (Protector), Leech Seed (Aggressor), Weather Ball (Aggressor)
At the start of your turns, IF the Weather is Sun THEN replace all instances of Sunny Day with Growth.
The Venusaur would take one turn for each of their orders, all in the same step.

Initial Setup:
:venusaur:1x Venusaur

The initial setup of the Raid determines the starting lineup of the opponent's team. If a Pokemon is part of the raid but only appears mid-Raid or appears conditionally, they will be listed as appearing here "x0" times.

Raid Arena
Fuchsia Marsh
While looking like a jungle, the Fuchsia Marsh, located within the Safari Zone of Fuchsia City, is definitely not one. Low-laying vegetation and muddy pools of water are very common here, which makes for a somewhat hostile environment. Large flowers can be seen here and there, releasing a very odd aroma.

TMan writes us a nice blurb of arena flavor to help bring the Raid to life. Everyone be nice to TMan!

Jungle Heat
At the end of the round: Venusaur freely executes Max Weather Ball on each raider (in role order) if there is a Weather in play; or G-Max Vine Lash on each raider (in role order) if not.
Sundown over Paradise
At the end of the fifth round, if the Boss is not Fainted: The challenger loses the Raid.
The meat of most Raids takes place here, in the Raid's Arena effects. All Raids have some manner of effect that ends the challenge in a raider loss, said to be the Raid's "Enrage". Some Raids have "hard" (immediate) Enrages, such as the example above. Other Raids have softer, more gradual Enrages, but there's always an Enrage of some kind.

Rewards
Player Progress: Venusaur's missing HP / Venusaur's maximum HP
Progress: 7 EXP to each raider
Victory: 3 more EXP to each raider

Referee Progress: Number of rounds reffed / Total Rounds reffed
Progress: 4:tea:JC
Completion: 2:tea:more JC

Raids will typically offer rewards based on progress checkpoints through the fight. Because Raids vary so much (some Raid Bosses lack HP entirely), the breakpoints have to be defined on a per-Raid basis.

Raid Modifiers
Raid Battles are modified in a variety of ways compared to ordinary battles; and Raid opponents, especially Bosses, are modified compared to ordinary battlers.

Condition Limit
Raiders can only create the following conditions once per Raid Phase:
  • Protection
  • Evasive
  • Helping Hand
(Effects that don't "create", "grant", or "inflict" a condition, such as Comatose and Cute Charm, never create that condition — the condition simply exists. See 3.3b "Ongoing Existence Effects".)
Bosses (but not Minions) are unaffected by Sleep, Freeze, Flinching, by the move Encore, and by Frost markers.
Conditions that Raiders create on Bosses, except Major Status, have a duration of at most one round.
The Condition filter limits you to one of each limited condition per phase, not per raid. In multi-phase raids, you'll get multiple chances to create those conditions.
Action Limit
Each Raider can only execute the following actions once per Raid Phase:
  • Instruct
Subsequent attempts by the same Raider, to use the same action, in the same Raid Phase, will fail after paying its cost.

Stage Limit
The raiders' stat stages can only be raised half as high as normal.
The stat stages of Bosses (not Minions) can only be lowered half as low as normal.
(Round normally, if the result is somehow not an integer.)
Typically, this limits raiders to at most +1 Accuracy/Evasion and +3 other stats; and the Bosses to at least -1 Accuracy/Evasion and -3 other stats.
In addition, if an effect would change a Raid opponent's stage (for good or ill), for a duration measured in turns; instead, that duration is that many steps.

HP Filter
Raider's effects, or an effect of a Boss action, that would refer to the maximum HP or current HP of a Boss, instead refer to either that number or 100; whichever is lower.
Example: A raider Pokemon with 50 HP uses Pain Split on a 1200 HP Boss. The move "sees" 100 HP, so the raider Pokemon gains 25 HP and the Boss loses 25 HP.

Other Filters
Bosses' and Minions' actions in bold are executed freely. (See 8.3 "Legality Checks")
Effects can't inflict Fainting on Bosses.
Bosses and Minions don't have or require Energy.
Bosses' and Minions' actions cost nothing.
Bosses' actions automatically succeed their accuracy checks.

Starting a Raid
Players can start a Raid Frontier challenge by signing up here, in the Raid Frontier thread.
  • Players post which Raid they wish to challenge and three Pokemon they intend to challenge that Raid with.
    • Their Pokemon will have the Protector, Supporter, and Aggressor roles, in the sequence that they were posted.
    • For each of their Pokemon, the player may assign them a role-appropriate Vocation from among the Vocations they've unlocked, if desired.
  • Referees take players' challenges from this thread. Players challenging the Raid Frontier for the first time (e.g. those with no Raid Thread of their own) are prioritized over repeat challengers.
Ending a Raid
A Raid challenge ends under the following conditions:
  • If any team wins the battle, the Raid ends.
  • The challenger may forfeit the Raid at any time, reduced rewards based on the degree of completion.
Challenge Form
When signing up for the Safari Zone, copy or approximate the following template in your signup post.
Code:
[B]Name:[/B] (name)

Cheat Sheet
Condition Limit
Each phase, raiders can only make Protection, Evasive, and Helping Hand once each.
Raiders' conditions, except Major Status, on Bosses don't last passed the end of the round.
Bosses (but not Minions) are unaffected by Sleep, Freeze, Flinching, by the move Encore, and by Frost markers.
Action Limit
Each phase, each raider may execute Instruct once each.
Stage Limit
The maximum stat stages of raiders, and the minimum stat stages of Bosses, are all halved.
Stage changes on Raid opponents, that would last an amount of turns, instead last that many steps.
HP Filter
Treat Boss HP (max and current) as being no more than 100 for the effects of moves. (Super Fang, Pain Split, Mind Blown, etc.)
Other Filters
Boss actions can't (typically) miss.
Bosses and Minions don't have Energy, and their actions cost nothing.

Behavior Modifier List
Actions used by Raid Opponents may have Raid-Action Modifiers. These modifiers add more effect text to the specific action they modify, after that action's own text.
Piercing - ex. ":poison barb:Piercing Psystrike"
While the user is performing this move:
The effects of abilities, items, types, and moves of opposing teams; as well as any conditions and markers created by those teams; are all ignored.
(Type effectiveness isn't an effect. Represented with :poison barb:.)

Double-Speed - ex. ":x speed2:Double-Speed Psystrike"
Sort this move in the turn sequence as if the user's Speed was Doubled (x2).
(Represented with :x speed2:.)

Triple-Speed - ex. ":x speed3:Triple-Speed Psystrike"
Sort this move in the turn sequence as if the user's Speed was Tripled (x3).
(Represented with :x speed3:.)

Addition N - ex. "Psystrike +10"
This moves deals [N] more damage with hits.

Multiplication N - ex. "Psystrike x2"
If this move would deal damage with hits, or if an effect of this move would heals HP; instead, it deals or heals [N] times (x[N]) that much.
If this move would raise the stages of the user or their allies, or lower the stages of any opponents; instead, it changes those stages by [N] times (x[N]) as much.

Fixed Damage N - ex. "Psystrike =10"
This move deals fixed damage; also, its BAP is always [N].

Vocation List

:ability shield:Protectors are targeted with more attacks than any other role.
:auspicious armor:Bodyguard
The user has Covering. Their hidden Pokemon is the Aggressor. (If there is more than one Aggressor, the user covers no one with this effect.)
:assault vest:Commando
The user can hold up to three (3) items.
When another ally consumes or drops an item: Restore that item, then move it to the user.
:safety goggles:Daredevil
The user's Evasion stage is increased by one (1).
While no actions have missed the user this round: Boss actions can't automatically pass their accuracy checks. (It is possible for them to miss the user.)
:gracidea:Duelist
The user has Defense Aid.
If damage to the user would be increased by an action's Addition modifier (like "Trailblaze +10"); instead, the attacker takes that much damage.
:rocky helmet:Engineer
The HP of Decoys created by the user is doubled (x2).
:ability shield:Paladin
The user is Bonus-Proof.
If damage to the user or their allies would be increased by an action's Addition modifier (like "Trailblaze +10"); instead, the user loses half x(0.5) that much HP.
:covert cloak:Supporters get more substitutions, to respond to the enemy's actions and support their allies.
:room service:Butler
This Vocation starts the battle with two (2) Service markers on it.
At the end of each round, unless ordered otherwise, if this Vocation has any Service markers: Remove a Service marker from this Vocation, then restore each item that each raider has consumed.

:galarica wreath:Cleric
When the user creates a Condition on an ally, removes a Condition from an ally, or raises an ally's stage(s) that was at or below zero: The user heals that ally for 8 HP.

:protective pads:Rearguard
At the end of the round, unless ordered otherwise, if the Protector has less percent HP remaining than the user: The user and the Protector exchange roles and vocations, even if one or both are fainted.
:utility umbrella:Reporter
Weather created by the user has the following additional effect:
● If this condition would be discarded for the first time; instead, it isn't.
(This doesn't prevent other Weather from existing alongside your Weather.)
:wise glasses:Tutor
The Aggressor knows Physical and Special moves known by the user.
The Protector knows Other-category moves known by the user.

:covert cloak:Thief
When an effect of the user lowers another Pokemon's stat stage: Raise a particular ally's same stat stage by one (1) for the same duration, depending on the stat:
  • Attack or Special Attack: Raise the stage of the Aggressor.
  • Defense or Special Defense: Raise the stage of the Protector.
:punching glove:Aggressors deal greatly increased damage. The other roles typically work to protect them.
:malicious armor:Blackguard
If an ally's stat stages would be raised by an effect; instead, the user's stat stages are raised.
If a condition would be created by an ally, on an ally; instead, that condition is created on the user, instead.
:loaded dice:Gambler
At the start of the raid, and at the end of each round: Note each of the following on this vocation.
  • A Type, chosen at random from among all Types.
  • A Power Bonus, chosen at random from 1 to 8 with equal odds.
  • A core stat stage, chosen at random from among the four core stats.
The user is the last noted Type, their attacks are given the last noted Power Bonus, and their last noted stat stage is treated as though it were maximized.
:twisted spoon:Psychic
The user's attacks are Special, and the user's Special Attack rank is at least 12.

:punching glove:Pugilist
The user's attacks are Physical, and the user's Attack rank is at least 12.
:pretty wing:Scribe
When a raid opponent uses a standard move: The user learns that move as a borrowed move for the rest of the battle.
(Standard moves are any move in the Data Audit, as it exists in the Data Audit, except Z-Moves and Max Moves.)
When the user attacks with a borrowed move, that they didn't originally know: Give that attack a Power Bonus of four (4).
:lustrous orb:Sorcerer
When the user completes a super-effective attack: Note that attack's names on this vocation until the end of the Raid.
When the user attacks: Give that attack a Power Bonus, equal to the two plus the number of names noted on this vocation (2 + names).
The user can't attempt attacks with any of the names noted on this vocation.

Raid Rewards
For toppling these towering titans, raiders can look forward to all manner of useful and exciting rewards.

Player Rewards
Rewards for players are specified in the data for each Raid. They tend to, but don't have to, follow these general guidelines:
Players can earn EXP for their raiding team from Level 3 and lower Raids, even if they lose. The amount is greater for Hard Raids than for Normal Raids.
Players can earn special Pokemon from certain raids!
For Pinnacle Raids, players can expect elevated rewards, such as Advanced Techniques and powerful Pokemon.
Players don't earn :rare candy:TC or :amulet coin:RC from Raids. They don't have any money!

Referee Rewards
Refereeing a Raid can be a relatively relaxed experience, compared to battling, but it still involves many calculations and rolls.

Referees earn :amulet coin:RC and :tea:JC, as specified by the Raid.

Ongoing tests will mirror the recent first-wave test of the Safari Zone. We'd love to hear feedback on complexity, ease of use, balance outliers, whether or not it's interesting for every Aggressor to be on a Choice item, and more. This facility is likely going to need lots of tuning!

For the Raid test, all (six currently-existing) Vocations are unlocked for all players.

:sv/heracross:
The eldest and most serious member of Pratik's team - Rudy . Rudy used to protect the team like a wall when it was in its early stages with Chomp and Tracy being in their kid stage . Rudy though rough from exterior has a very weak spot all his team members , specially Tracy the Blaziken and Chomp the Garchomp , since he has spent most of his journey with them . Rudy was also among the 3 mons who first joined Pratik's team . Being a fighting type pokemon , Rudy aspires to the strongest mon BBP has to offer . For now , he is one of the most trusted members of the team and sort of a father figure to both Garchomp and Blaziken .

How they met :
Pratik met Rudy along with Tracy and Chomp . Rudy seemed like the leader of the pack ( which was obvious since he was the only one who was fully evolved , considering Heracross don't evolve at all ) He just happened to come across them in the Vermilion forest ( how did they even reach there ? ) while going to Vermilian city to catch a ship towards Galar . He felt like he should not leave 3 pokemon alone in the forest ( since 2 of them were in their baby stage ) full of Beedrills and invited them to join his team , which they did .

Behavior :
Rudy is protective towards his teammates in not the most non-violent sort of way . He likes to pick up fights with wild pokemons and trainers to become stronger since he believes that it is his responsibility to protect his friends from any harm . Being one of the starting member of the team , Rudy helps Chomp training the newcomers , although he rarely fights them , and prefers to fight wild pokemons instead . He is yet to tap on his full potential , maybe there is something in Kalos that can help us ?

Rudy (Heracross)

Abilities:

Guts: The Pokémon fights even more tenaciously in the face of adversity. When the user attacks with a Physical attack, if the user has a Major Status: Give that attack a power bonus of five (5).The user's attacks can't be reduced by Burn.

Swarm: The Pokémon turns to their inner reserve of bug-ish-ness in a pinch. When the user attacks with a Bug-type attack, while the user's HP is at or below a third of their maximum HP (x1/3): Give that attack a power boost of three (3).

Moxie (HA): The Pokémon swells with confidence after defeating an opponent. When the user knocks out a Pokemon with a hit: Raises the user's Attack stage by one (1) for their next six (6) turns. [UNLOCKED]

It's clear that we're going to need a few runs to test higher Raids. Preliminary testing is showing that the Amoonguss raid is easy enough to be boring, the Ninjas are closer to the mark, and no one has read enough of Silvally to bother signing up.

This doesn't impact anyone yet, but if you finish your Raid test run, feel welcome to sign back up for another during the testing period. (This lifts the one-per-player request.)

There's a second version of the Sporeverlord raid in the Data Thread, now. The first version is present for any ongoing challenges to refer back to.

Based on feedback received, we're basing this revision on a couple of assumptions:
  • It would be more interesting if there were more threats to adapt to mid-raid, rather than just running on a script from the first action to the last.
  • There's plenty of room between the current difficulty, and a theoretical amount difficulty that demands strict teambuilding.
If you come back for another test, give the revised Sporeverlord a try. We'll compare feedback between the first and second versions to determine what is liked and disliked.

Slow and dopey, Sheldon chugs along at his own pace. He has a sturdy body, so if he was attacked, he probably wouldn't even notice. He is often caught staring blankly into space.

Changes Upon Evolving:
One day, Sheldon was sitting at the beach, staring off into space with his usual blank expression when a Shellder flipped out of the water and chomped down hard on his tail, triggering his sudden evolution! Sheldon can now sit up straight, but he still finds it difficult to focus on what's in front of him. His intelligence seems to have increased a little bit, though. Just a bit. Sheldon's body is sturdier than it was as a Slowpoke and can now launch stronger Psychic and Water attacks.

How They Met:
Sheldon's original trainer was one of Doduodrio's friends who traded him in the hopes of evolving him. Unfortunately, before the trade happened, Sheldon managed to lose his King's Rock, and couldn't evolve into Slowking. Because he was a traded Pokemon, Sheldon is one of Doduodrio's strongest team members. His original trainer insists that he doesn't want to trade back for Sheldon, so Doduodrio has been raising him ever since.

Name Origins:
Sheldon has "Shel" in it which references Slowbro's category, the "Hermit Crab" Pokemon.

Valerie

Species:
Gardevoir, Gender: Female
Level: 2, EXP: ---
Nature: Bold (+2 Def, -1 Atk)
Typing: Psychic / Fairy
Abilities: Synchronize / Trace / (Unlocked) Telepathy
Advanced Techniques: None
Profile:
Valerie loves to dance, always twirling and humming an ancient melody from some faraway land. She always maintains her composure (most of the time at least) and speaks in a refined manner, following some strict code of behavior.

How They Met:
Valerie descended from a long line of seers, but she always preferred to dance rather than tell fortunes. She enjoys the occasional battle, as long as it involves some sort of dancing, which is why she sometimes teams up with Doduodrio.

Name Origins:
Valerie is the name of the Fairy-type Gym Leader from Pokemon X and Y. Also, Valerie sounds a lot like ballerina which I think Gardevoir is based on.

Profile:
Walter is like everyone's favorite uncle! He's very kind and possesses many talents such as juggling, sleight of hand, and (by far the most important) telling groan-inducing puns!

How They Met:
Walter sells balloons at an amusement park but also enjoys battling, so he sometimes teams up with Doduodrio for battles!

Name Origins:
Conkeldurr usually holds a Flame Orb which reminded me of coal walkers. Walter sounds a lot like Walker.
