The directions in questions are specifically targeted at those who have the journal automatically popping up during calibration (which should be everyone who is following the directions). Not sure what to change, as they are correct when the journal is automatically popping up during frame calibration.
So, yeah, if you don't have the journal up popping up during calibration you can't discount the first page of the journal, because it was not part of the calibration process. -
