pretty good, but she says "we're bad guys" not "we're the suicide squad" so maybe you can come up with another word there. IDK your familiarity with scooby doo. anyway i imagined daphne saying that so you can work with taht

ironic considering the far more blatant examples of sexism in the movie

she confused me. by nature her character is supposed to be not very liberated. like she is the abused gf of the joker. would that be sexist to show that at all? that's an integral part of the character

but they changed it for the movie by making them pretty much equals and her even crazier than the joker so idk.

I don't see how it was sexist though

I guess the question is where do you draw the line between something applying to a specific character and something being a theme of the film

if it was treated like something as insidious and insane as it was (considering the movies tonal retardation), then it wouldn't be sexist--but their relationship is played as something badass and 'cool' lol, not even as blackly humorous????????????

if a character is brutally raped and stuff (which could happen in my movie), and it is an integral part of their character, is it bad and triggering to show it in the movie?

see my comment regarding that^

also re: liberation, its like ok damn she sexcy af, so she is comfortable with her sexuality but only within the context that she is joker's property and personal lapdancer and has the mind of a child oo

definitely not saying that sex appeal alone makes for a sexist portrayal / if anything the photoshopping stuff doesnt bother me so much since it is vfx, e.g. they might have flattened the stomach to make it easier to map dynamic textures onto it and stuff w/e

furthermore its not like the movie itself is some massive sexist movie, no way, just i think its dumb that someone could hold up harley as a strong independent female character or whatever, lol

shes mentally handicapped stockholme syndrome-addled masturbation bait

as her character should be

ftr I was being facetious in both comments, but legitimately hypothetical in the second.

I agree its a bad movie, and I also agree that it's really not a sexist movie

imagining suicide squad as like, an actually good black comedy with liberal sprinklings of excellent action is so sad

also the more i think about it despite suicide squads terrible visuals overall harleys makeup IS pretty damn good, it makes margot robbie look like a completely different extremely hot person

the movie got messed up because it didn't know if it wanted to portray Harley as an independent character or as an abused possession of the Joker. Honestly the character struggles with that in other media, including the good Suicide Squad movie lol, which is somewhat compelling. But in this there wasn't really a struggle with that because she and the Joker truly loved each other in a weird way.

Anyway I think it's just a problem with movies in general in that since you know it's fake, it's easy to relate and have fun with a character who is bad just because the movie is fun. Like how so many people love and even root for Heath Ledger's Joker, even though he is fucking insane and evil and everyone would want him hanged irl. But in the context of it being a movie you instead see "wow, this is a well-written character who does fun things. I like it."

harley quinn cannot be portrayed as independent, basically ever, because DC is clearly intent on portraying her as Joker's possession. In the comics it's different and she does have a long arc where she grows and separates herself in ways from the joker. that doesnt happen here. When you say they 'love' each other its more token exhanges of saccharine nonsense thrown in by the writers/directors to convince audiences that these guys are some kind of bonnie/clyde pair, which they aren't

also only edgelords really root for the joker because he is fucking evil, ppl actually appreciate strong villains like joker because of other qualities, like their strength of vision or sense of drive, etc., their intensity and not actually because they are evil. The two things might be tangentially related but only Elliott Rodger watches the Dark Knight and says I really love and empathize with this guy lol

--interestingly there was a massive drought of female villains in all media for a very long time mostly due to the above

to portray the joker and harley as actually having some kind of meaningful relationship that is in any real way fulfilling would require like...massive rewriting of the joker
