Actually, "salut" is one of the rare words in French where all of the letters are actually pronounced... except the t at the end. But that's still most of the letters!!!!

They probably took it from us and, since they don't pronounce the last half of their words, decided to randomly spell it that way. Lots of opportunity to steal words after the two dozen or so invasions of their weak country
Kitten, you moron. Salut is just an informal way of saying hello! Come to think of it, it may be where our greeting in English "Salutations" comes from, but don't quote me on that, as I am not 100% sure.
