1% Makes All the Difference (Warstory)

Odinwolf vs. Sc. A little background information: Sc and I had already played each other once this day and he beat me handily. When this match started, I fully expected to get mollywhopped again, but I hoped that what knowledge we already had of each other’s teams would work in my favor.

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause

and... ??? (you'll find out at the end)

Leftovers and hail damage will be omitted.

Odinwolf sent out Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ?).
Sc sent out Aerodactyl (lvl 100 Aerodactyl ?).
Aerodactyl is exerting its pressure!
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Hail began to fall!

Odinwolf: shoot
Skios has entered the room.
Sc: hey

I lead with a Scarf’ed Abomasnow that catches opposing leads off guard all the time. However, when the match begins and I see Sc and his Aerodactyl lead, I am not pleased. Even with a scarf attached, Aero outruns my Abomasnow and dings it pretty stinkin’ hard with Rock Slide. If I flinch on the first turn, Abomasnow is worthless. Therefore, I make the switch to:

Odinwolf switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Aerodactyl used Rock Slide.
Heatran lost 37% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.
---
Aerodactyl used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Heatran lost 57% of its health.
Odinwolf's Heatran fainted.

In our last match, Sc’s Aero only used Rock Slide against me. I didn’t do any damage calcs before I made my next move, so I assume its banded and stay in to hit whatever he switches to. We all know what happens when we assume don’t we? Heatran dies on my foolish mistake.

Odinwolf switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ?).
Aerodactyl used Taunt.
Walrein fell for the taunt!
Walrein used Blizzard.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Aerodactyl lost 88% of its health.
Sc's Aerodactyl fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
Walrein absorbed the hail! (Walrein’s Ice Body recovery will now be omitted from the log)
---

This is probably the switch I should have made on the first turn, since Blizzard is more immediately threatening and Walrein is bulkier. Fortunately for me, Sc over-predicts and I make the simple attack for the kill. Now Aero is out of the way and I can try to exert some control over the match.

Sc: >.>
Odinwolf: haha
Sc: you're haxing me back!
Odinwolf: I've been praying to the hax gods since our last encounter
(In our last battle, Aero flinched my pokes 3 times when I had a chance to bring them down)

Sc switched in Heracross (lvl 100 Heracross ?).
Odinwolf switched in Froslass (lvl 100 Froslass ?).
Heracross used Close Combat.
It doesn't affect Froslass...
---

Saw this one a mile away. If I stay in, Walrein is a goner. Froslass is the logical switch so I go to my favorite Ghost in the whole poke-world. I believe Heracross is banded, so I stick around and toss a Blizzard his way in hopes of another easy KO. Sc is getting wise to my methods though and makes a safe switch of his own.

Sc switched in Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
Froslass used Blizzard.
It's not very effective...
Jirachi lost 20% of its health.
---
Jirachi used Psychic.
Froslass lost 69% of its health.
Froslass used Thunder Wave.
Jirachi is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
---

I know an unboosted Psychic won’t kill me in one shot, so I stay in to inflict status. Without Heatran, it’s going to be a bit harder to bring down Jirachi so I hope the status will give me any kind of advantage later on. Not wanting to sacrifice Froslass just yet, I switch out.

Odinwolf switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ?).
Jirachi used Psychic.
Walrein lost 33% of its health.
---
Walrein used Substitute.
Walrein lost 25% of its health.
Walrein made a substitute!
Jirachi used Psychic.
The substitute took damage for Walrein!
Walrein's substitute faded!
---

With paralysis, Walrein goes first every turn, which means I can alternate between Sub and Protect and let Hail kill Jirachi for me. However, before I bring Protect into the fold, I decide to see if I can get a free sub up on a switch. As you can see, it pays off.

Sc switched in Heracross (lvl 100 Heracross ?).
Walrein used Substitute.
Walrein lost 25% of its health.
Walrein made a substitute!
---
Heracross used Stone Edge.
It's super effective!
The substitute took damage for Walrein!
Walrein's substitute faded!
Walrein used Blizzard.
Heracross lost 43% of its health.
---
Walrein used Protect.
Walrein protected itself!
Heracross used Stone Edge.
Heracross's attack missed!
---
Heracross used Stone Edge.
It's super effective!
Walrein lost 59% of its health.
Walrein used Blizzard.
A critical hit!
Heracross lost 33% of its health.
Sc's Heracross fainted.
---

I get two turns of unnecessary hax, but the result would have been the same either way. Walrein abuses the hail and good defenses to bring down the scariest threat I’ve seen so far on Sc’s team. I say so far, because I didn’t see his entire team in the last battle and now he makes a switch that leaves me good and scared.

Sc switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Walrein used Protect.
Walrein protected itself!
Gengar used Shadow Ball.
Walrein protected itself!
---
Gengar used Thunderbolt.
It's super effective!
Walrein lost 44% of its health.
Odinwolf's Walrein fainted.
Gengar lost 10% of its health.
---

Odinwolf: never got to see him last time
Sc: yep

I scout Gengar’s attack with Protect but since he didn’t do any damage on the first turn, I don’t get to see that it’s carrying Orb. I don’t think I want to switch anything into Gengar’s attacks, so I decide to let Walrein take the blow. Fortunately for me, between two turns of hail damage and LO, Gengar is in KO range of a STAB Blizzard. Also, now that I know Gengar isn’t scarfed, I’m certain that Froslass will outrun it.

Odinwolf switched in Froslass (lvl 100 Froslass ?).
Froslass used Blizzard.
Gengar lost 77% of its health.
Gengar used Shadow Ball.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Froslass lost 31% of its health.
Odinwolf's Froslass fainted.
Gengar lost 1% of its health.
Sc's Gengar fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
---

Sc: lol

Gengar survives the Blizzard with just 1% health and poor Froslass goes down. The scarf on Abomasnow is still my nasty little secret so I don’t want to send Abomasnow back out until I know the time is right. I try to always save Mamoswine for last, so that leaves me with Tentacruel as the switch on the double KO.

Odinwolf switched in Tentacruel (lvl 100 Tentacruel ?).
Sc switched in Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
Tentacruel used Knock Off.
Jirachi lost 3% of its health.
Tentacruel knocked off foe Jirachi's Choice Scarf!
Jirachi used Psychic.
It's super effective!
Tentacruel lost 52% of its health.
---

I can’t remember what item I think Jirachi is holding so instead of attacking on this first turn, I opt to use Knock-Off to eliminate any aide Jirachi might be getting from a held item. In retrospect, I probably should have attacked, but it was a gamble either way.

Odinwolf switched in Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ?).
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Jirachi used Psychic.
Abomasnow lost 48% of its health.
Abomasnow's special defence was lowered.
---

Sc: yeah!

Sc is celebrating, but the SpDef drop won’t help him. Fortunately for me, I won’t even be revealing the choice scarf on the next turn because Jirachi is paralyzed.

Abomasnow used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Jirachi lost 41% of its health.
Sc's Jirachi fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
---
Sc switched in Salamence (lvl 100 Salamence ?).
Salamence's intimidate cut Abomasnow's attack!
Odinwolf switched in Tentacruel (lvl 100 Tentacruel ?).
Salamence used Dragon Dance.
Salamence's attack was raised.
Salamence's speed was raised.
---

Bad news. I expect a Draco Meteor from Salamence and switch to sacrifice Tentacruel so I can get Abomasnow back in to execute his nasty scarfed surprise. Unfortunately, Sc guesses that I’ve got a choice item and risks the Dragon Dance because he believes that I am locked into Earthquake. His prediction is correct and this turns out to be a critical turning point in the match.

Salamence used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Tentacruel lost 48% of its health.
Odinwolf's Tentacruel fainted.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.
---
Odinwolf switched in Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ?).
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Salamence used Dragon Claw.
Abomasnow lost 52% of its health.
Odinwolf's Abomasnow fainted.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.
---

So here’s where I make a critical mistake to follow up the good prediction of my opponent on the last few turns. I go back to my scarfed Abomasnow knowing that there is a chance that Salamence will outrun me after a Dragon Dance. I guess that it’s a standard DDancer, carrying enough speed to beat Heracross but not enough to catch Abomasnow. (I have since been told that 1DD is all ANY Salamence needs to beat Scarf Abomasnow. I was wrong and it cost me big time!) If this pays off, I’m up 2 pokes to 1 and have a good shot at winning. Instead, he outruns my poor Yeti and I’m left down 2 to 1 instead.

Odinwolf switched in Mamoswine (lvl 100 Mamoswine ?).

Odinwolf: *crosses fingers*
Sc: you got to be kidding me

Mamoswine used Ice Shard.
It's super effective!
Salamence lost 62% of its health.
Sc's Salamence fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
---

Salamence goes down to the poke I probably should have sent out against him earlier. Now I hold my breath and hope that his last pokemon is weak to ice or ground and slow enough for Mamo to beat. Instead…

Sc switched in Mamoswine (lvl 100 Mamoswine ?).

Sc: wait
Skios: Oh dear
Odinwolf: speed tie?
Sc: yours is CBd

No, mine isn’t CB. I carry Expert Belt for the freedom to switch up attacks.

Mamoswine (sc) used Earthquake.
Mamoswine lost 79% of its health.
Mamoswine (sc) lost 10% of its health.
Mamoswine used Earthquake.
Mamoswine (sc) lost 65% of its health.
The hail continues to fall.
---

His Mamo is faster on this turn, but we’re both in KO range now. My poke is sitting at 21% while his sits at 25%. If there really is a speed tie then its all up to the RNG to determine the winner.

Sc: or not (replying to his own guess that mine Mamo has CB)
Sc: is yours jolly?
Skios: Heh
Odinwolf: hmmm
Odinwolf: mine is adamant
Odinwolf: expert belt

I probably shouldn’t have shared that info but I was fairly certain the game was out of my hands at that time. I EQ the next turn, hoping against hope that there is still a speed tie and he’s bluffing about being Jolly.

Mamoswine (sc) used Protect.
Mamoswine (sc) protected itself!
Mamoswine used Earthquake.
Mamoswine (sc) protected itself!
The hail continues to fall.
---

Apparently he’s scared that I’m bluffing about being Adamant and protects to see if I’ll Ice Shard or EQ.

Odinwolf: looks like you win
Sc: or not
Odinwolf: guess we'll see
Sc: adamant = more power for ice shard
Skios: /me flips the coin
(sometimes its fun to have spectators)

Deciding that my only hope at this point is Ice Shard, I click the button and wait to see if he did the same.

Mamoswine used Ice Shard.
Mamoswine (sc) lost 24% of its health. (Survives with 1% health!)
Mamoswine (sc) used Earthquake.
Mamoswine lost 21% of its health.
Odinwolf's Mamoswine fainted.
Sc wins!

Sc: !!!
Odinwolf: *dies*
Sc: Have you done a warstory before?
Skios: Ok, that sucked :p
Sc: Because if you do make one, don't make it suck ;)
Odinwolf: I can warstory this I think
Sc: Yeah
Sc: I like it
Odinwolf: *DIES*
Skios: :p
Sc: Bu I made some stupid moves
Odinwolf: 1%
Sc: So it kinda shows I suck >.<
Skios has left the room.
Sc: well
Sc: at least it was a gg
Odinwolf: gg indeed

So there you have it. 1% is all that separated me from victory. If my Mamoswine was Orbed, or if I had gone to Mamoswine instead of Abomasnow after Tetancruel was sacrificed that game could have been mine. There were some mistakes on both sides, but he capitalized on mine and pulled out the victory.

Props:
- Double Mamoswine!
- Walrein for knocking out Aerodactyl and Heracross so the rest of my team could breath easy
- Froslass for taking out Gengar and neutering Jirachi
- Sc for the good match and for good prediction skills to win him the game

Slops
- Abomasnow for getting only one kill and getting outrun by Salamence
- Tentacruel did a whole lot of nothing
- 1% changes the match for Froslass and Mamoswine. His Mamoswine and Gengar both survive attacks with 1% and punish me in return.

Nice warstory. Finally there is a warstory with me in it. I actually knew your Abomasnow was scarfed from the previous game. I really like your writing.

In our last match, Sc’s Aero only used Rock Slide against me. I didn’t do any damage calcs before I made my next move, so I assume its banded and stay in to hit whatever he switches to. We all know what happens when we assume don’t we? Heatran dies on my foolish mistake.

Lead Aero with Taunt/SR/Rock Slide/EQ @ focus sash is all the rage now :/

The match had some good moments, though, and the ending was funny (I couldn't help but think that 1% was attributed to Gengar surviving against Frolass).

That was an on the edge of your seat warstory and seeing two of the same pokemon it just makes it that much more interesting. Good job:) WOOT! 100th post:)

No version of Salamence will ever be outsped by a Scarf Abomasnow after one Dragon Dance. Abomasnow reaches max 240 Speed with a + Nature, and any Dragon Dance Salamence will run minimum 270 Speed. If you had not made that unecessary sacrifice, you would have won.

Thanks for the tip Pablo. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Heh, very good. I like the commentary on this one because it showed what you were thinking throughout the match. You both put up a great fight, and the survival of 1% showed that it was a true prediction war. Good job. :]

Good war story, good battle. I did like it, but I could figure out the ending from reading the title...which made it a little bit less dramatic to me.

It is kind of annoying to think of a title, but I would say that title certainly draws people in to read it.

Good job.

That was a good battle. ^^

I wonder what the damage was when he was left with 1%, if it was max, min, or middle. That was a very good read though.
