13 year old commits suicide thanks to fake Myspace account. Discuss

Depression is a big load of bullshit...I know a lto fo people who have "depression", and all of them are basically...lacking in the intelligence department. Being temporarily sad about a breakup/failing a clas etc is understandable, but this girl being dumb enough to kill herself disgusts me almost as much as the people defending her.

Evidence please. "i know some people" doesn't count. Having a majority of her school send out messages that can only be described as bullying is a bigger event than your giving it credit for. Plenty of intelligent people have killed themselves so your argument fails.

You cannot blame a suicide on ANYBODY! She killed HERSELF!

Basically, she could have avoided this in many ways

1) Not being a moron by having a MySpace

The emo girls from your school/college says hi. You might not like them but they aren't ALL morons.

2) Not talking to a person you have never met on MySpace

Fair enough. A lot of people use it to reach out to more people though, especially those who don't have many friends.

3) Not "falling in love" with this person you have never talked to or seen and whom may exist only on MySpace.

Depression is a mental illness. She wasn't really in love, she was attached to someone who appeared to be offering kindness in a world that had largely rejected her. This is akin to saying when kids are groomed by pedophiles that its the kids fault for being stupid. She was only 13.

In summary, she was a moron. And even if it isn't linked to depression, Kira, you cannot deny her stupidity. Also, if anybody wanted to get a picture off the internet, or maybe find out what type of student she was, you may find the real reason she killed herself.

Hell, if I was that stupid, I'd kill myself too!

I'm tempted to imply from your last sentence that you are trolling.

Well remember Dragontamer she was also just 13 and had no experience of what a romantic relationship was. But yeah you are right, there were more things wrong with this girl than what the Drews did. Lets not play down what the Drews did though, I find extremely silly and childish any parent would get that involved with kids petty squabbles. It was clearly an awful thing to do especially considering she already knew the girl and that her reaction would not be good.
Just to make sure people understand my posistion: yes, what the Drews did was disgusting. I cannot deny that. However, the revenge on the Drews is far more disgusting, and I cannot pin down the suicide on anyone else other than Meiers herself, as the definition of suicide is someone killing themselves.

Excuse me but did you even read the article? Here is an exert:
Yes, I did read the article. It is 5 pages long however so do forgive me for my oversight of a single sentence. That said, I'll redo my retort with that in mind. Thanks for pointing it out.

With that in mind, my stance becomes very cloudy. There is not enough information for me to make a stance on Lori Drews. The children... were playing a sick game. As far as I know, it is typical for 13-year old girls to be assholes, but because they are kids I can't really blame them for anything.

My focus is on Lori Drews because she is the only one who was old enough and smart enough to possibly see it comming. However, her involvement is questionable. Yes, she did earn Meier's trust through a fake MySpace account while pretending to be a young attractive male... (which is disgusting in many ways...) but further, days before the incident she gave out the password and account information to another neighbor's daughter, Mulford. Mulford then sent out the first hateful message from Josh's account and that appears to have snowballed the whole incident.

I find it hard to believe that she had any involvement in these final days aside from giving the account password to Mulford. A responsable adult should know better than to play with a depressed girl's feelings. Further, Lori must have been plesant with Meiers through Josh's account... Is there any evidence that shows that Lori was hostile to Meiers in any way? Or was it the Mulford girl who took advantage of the position Lori has been building up on Josh's account?

Depression is a big load of bullshit...I know a lto fo people who have "depression", and all of them are basically...lacking in the intelligence department. Erm... no. Depression is not correlated to intelligence in any real way as far as I know. Depression is a serious problem, but it is treatable. Depression is a state of mind, a disease that must be dealt with carefully.

One thing I know is that people with clinical depression are sometimes harder to get along with, which is unfortunate because it begins the vicious cycle of a person being an asshole because he's depressed, and people treating him badly because he's an asshole which causes depression. I don't know if it was the case for Meiers, but it is a possibility.

This is really sad, but it does happen everyday. I have a Myspace, and my schoolmates do this all the time. That's why I'm trying to quit it (after I say bye to my online friends o.o).

Still, I can't believe the mother would actually support her daughter into making fun of this poor girl! They should at least be sued!

The district attorney is trying to find a way to press criminal charges, but there is no law against this kind of thing. If they were to be sued, it would be a pretty flimsy case because it was the girl's choice to participate on myspace.

They were aware she took medication for depression. Megan struggled with attention-deficit disorder and bouts of anxiety as well; she had been in counseling since third grade.

She was already in such a mind state that something like the "Josh Evans" joke could have pushed her over the edge.

I mean come on, she's been dealing with a weight problem which I'm sure she's tried to combat against. She had a hard time fitting it...she was in such a vulnerable state.

Depression is a serious problem. It is treatable but it's a psychiatric disorder. It affects the mind and how one can think.

The Drew girl's prank first brought Megan to a level of happiness her parents were surprised to see (she lost weight and joined a sport). But with such a high level of joy, something bad can be devastating. In this case the fact that her new-found "friend" and others start posting nasty comments and such destroyed Megan's newfound happiness.

To bring some personal stories into light, I myself have gone through the weight problem. I was picked on everyday in elementary school because of it. It was horrible, I admit. I did try to lose some weight, but one can't lose weight just like that. Eventually I moved and perhaps it was the best thing to happen to me. I now have friends who look past the whole weight thing.

I've gone to the gym and been lifting weights. I took tae kwan do for a few years and it paid off.

Now, if this sort of thing (fake myspace crap) were to happen to me, suicide wouldn't be the first thing to come to my mind. Not because I'm a guy or because I'm smart, but because I don't suffer from depression. I was fortunate enough to have my life take a turn in the right direction. Megan only got a taste of a turn around until "Josh" destroyed everything.

I can't say that if I were suffering from clinical depression or something that I would have chosen to take my life, but it would have been a strong possiblilty.

So what I am trying to say?

Megan was depressed. Depression is a serious thing. It affects how one can think. Suicidal thoughts are a dangerous symptom of depression.

While I do feel the Meiers could have done something (no myspace), I still feel what the Drew family did was basically wrong. Not illegal, but they did perform this fact with the knowledge of Megan's problems.

She was depressed because she was a loser. If she had been more outgoing or just got along with people better, she would probably not have been depressed. She was also superficial, and cared too much about her looks and what people thought about her. It makes me sick.

Some does not apply to all. Depression=/=Stupidity, unless of course you can prove this with factual evidence just not some people you know in real life.

You cannot blame a suicide on ANYBODY! She killed HERSELF!

Are you saying that the Drews family did nothing to push her over the edge? The ultimate choice was hers but don't you dare tell me the Drews had nothing to do with it.

I'm sure your the most popular person at your school and never had any problems with anyone and fit into every single click. Come on please put yourself in her position. Kids are mean; she was having weight problems an obvious choice for kids to pick on her. She was trying to get past this by joining a sport and losing weight as well. The Drews family had the knowledge that she did indeed have depression and still went ahead with their cruel joke.

Not everyone has the same standards as you. So don't compare Megan to your mentality.

No, I am definitely not the most popular person at my school. I am infamous at my school for Christ's sake. She was a choice to pick on, because she was a self-pitying loser. So? Who cares if no one has the same standards as me. This is my interpretation and I am free to share it. Unless you do not like the Constitution? It is also true for the most part. Kids only tear apart those that they see as weak and vulnerable.

You know, my gut instinct of this was to link to the Darwin Awards, but I refrained and read the article. There's a LOT of sick shit here.

First, I think Meir's father is perfectly justified.

Lori Drew was not some idiot teenager doing stupid online punking stuff like Firebot. Lori Drew is an adult. An adult with her own children, no less, who exploited Megan's depression. How this scumbag found time to falsify an online identity to extract information from a 14 year old girl instead of, you know, having a job and not fiddling around with teenagers I don't know, but there is clearly premeditated malicious intent here.

You know what they call adults who try and hook up with teenage girls using falsified online personas? Pedophiles. If nothing else, Lori Drew should be carted off to the insane asylum for that, even if she wasn't intending a sexual relationship (although she might have and those were conveniently destroyed after the hanging.)

The internet mob was equally vicious and they should all be prosecuted too, regardless of Lori Drew's clear lack of moral sense.

Meir's parents should have been far more careful with her and the internet, especially since they repealed it before. You can hardly blame them though, as at the end Megan was ignoring them to talk to the falsified Josh Evans.

In short, Lori Drew is a dysfunctional, possibly sociapathic adult who should not be getting off scott-free. Unfortunately, I doubt my "could easily have been a pedophile" argument is going to fly in court.

Oh and blastoiselover100 was acting pretty stupid too. No one gives a shit if you're the big man at school, a girl died here because of a fucked up adult, now is no time for your macho man shtick.

You obviously don't know what "depression" is otherwise I don't think you be commenting the way you did. Do you honestly think those who are depressed have the same state of mind as someone who isn't?

One person can only deal with so much till they reach their breaking point. Dealing with bullies, depression, being overweight all at the age of 13, one can obviously see how one can be distraught over this. Was suicide her only option? Of course not but one can see how it could be a choice.

Yes I do. I suffer from it asshole. Yes, if they have control and self respect they do. You can be depressed and still respect your body. She should not have been fucking around on myspace like an idiot. It is partially her fault. You cannot rest all the blame on the fake myspace acconunt. I am not justifying her actions, what she did was wrong, she just does not deserve all the shit.

She was not innocent. It was her fault. She was the one on myspace fucking around. I think it is wrong too. Both parties are at fault here.

I partly agree here, if anyone is at fault for her death, it's well..her, the kid never intended or foresaw her KILLING herself because of the prank. I fuck around with people all the time, the prank wasn't quite as mean as some shit i've seen/done lol. It's just the repurcussion that occured because of it, that it's being heralded as fucking horrible, disgusting etc etc. This is all IMO though.

And your scientific basis for that statement?
Also maybe they seem stupid to you because they do not act normally. That is a cause of depression.

You do not realize how lonely this girl was... she wasn't going to question the reality of the one person that was ever nice to her.

She is not stupid, and you are trying to call people with a serious mental condition stupid.

Depression is real. Hitit4three is obviously an ignorant ass. It can have severe repercussions on a person's life. It really depends on the severity of depression and the person's self-control or respect for themself.

I heard about that. This is why the "Myspace is for (BAN ME PLEASE)" song was created. Myspace is a waste of time and energy, and apparently confidence. I find it pretty sad that some guy would pose as a friend and then crush her spirit like that. (BAN ME PLEASE). But at the same time, the girl gets a heaping helping of balme with a side of WTF. If she was really that frail and obessive of others opion she should have got off her butt, turned off her computer and gone to ask for help. It's like if some idiot on these forums were to get a thought in his head of how fun it would be to randomly PM someone a bunch of insults. If I opened up my inbox to a message of "You are a lifeless (BAN ME PLEASE), nobody likes you, fucking die" I would simply delete it and think what a loser he must be to have nothing better then to attack a screenname. OMG, you are soooo cool. Again, no one cares. And then her parents also get a their fair share of blame. They should've inquired or noticed about her behavior, and not let her waste her time on myspace. They could've sat her down and told her that she is a beautiful young person and that no one, especially not some random life drop out who spends his days in his mom's basement flamming her fucking myspace, and that no one has the right to tell her otherwise.

Now the girl wasn't an idiot persay, but simply in need of help, Britiney Spears is an example of an idiot. She can have a nerveous break down, get help and have another nerveous break down, then sell out her own sister's soon-to-be without using an once of the brain she doesn't have. This girl simply needed to talk to someone who couldn't see who she really was, because she couldn't handle what people thought of her when they met her in real life. So she confided in a guy on the internet who seemed like he would here her out, only to get told later by the one person she could truly trust, that she was a failure. It's like down-syndrome to the max, but with an ability to cling on to something you now is fake. Any on-line relation is fake until you take the computer out of the equation. Honestly, I'd blame the myspace maker more for making the second most retarded and deadly invention ever, second only to the gun.

I felt kind of bad that she felt killing herself was her only choice, but I don't know her. I can't imagine having that happen to my best friend, or a sibling or son or daughter or anyone I personally now. And anyone who hasn't ever met her personally has no right to asume her to be mentally incapable Hit4three.. Honeslty, just e-mail people you know if you want to talk to them. Geez.

Whoa man, in my school, there are a total of 3 very depressed people and they're all geniuses.....as in perfect gpa and 2100+ on their sats. I do agree that she was dumb enough to talk to someone she didn't even know.

Exactly, and she was an overweight, depressed, loser, 13 year old girl. Meaning she has almost all the problems a teen girl can have at once, plus the hormonal changes with puberty. Obviously she wouldn't respect herself all that much, something that Hitit4three seems t be unaware off.

You hit the nail on the head.

i will probably never say this again in my life, but i agree with deck knight 100%

Yah, he put everything I wanted to say into words. The only person not at fault her is Meier's father. He was justified in his revenge. The internet mob is clearly wrong, suicide is almost always wrong, and bullying/whateverthehell Lori Drews was doing is always wrong.

To Master of Six Kings: All that is true, but it is true whenever a group of people meet and talk. In a group of five close friends, one is going to feel less included then the others. Myspace is basically talking all the high schools in the world and allowing them to merge. It can be abused, but it can also be useful. You don't see people calling fraternities and other social gatherings evil and for (BAN ME PLEASE), Myspace is simply the one everyone is using to place all the blame on. and TBCH, forums can be considered worse than Myspace, where you never know anyone. It's not exactly a place to get attached to them, but it can be in the hands of an uninformed user, which Megan was.

Having now done some research on depression, I have conceded that it has no direct correlation to intelligence, and it is just a coincidence that all the depressed people I know are morons.

Just so ya know...I am a sophomore in high school. I have been bullied viciously since the 6th grade. BUT, i have yet to see a reason to kill myself. I am top 5 in my class, with a perfect GPA, and I have noticed that the "depressed" people are kind of in a crappy cycle. They are depressed, they act like assholes, people mirror their actions, and they become more depressed. It would be just as easy for them to be nice to a couple people, and become friends.

She could very easily have hung out with the wrong people (ie the popular girls) who would say mean things to her (duh fat + popular=asking for trouble). She also could have noticed that they made fun of her, not apparently insulted this Drew girl, and instead found some people like her (not popular...like me lol, there are actually way more of us unpopular, normal people than there are of the "beautiful people") that she could have been nice to, talked to, and become friends with.

I have never seen any reason to take my own life, because if I did that, how would I ever fix it? I am more concerned with keeping the few friends I have, making new ones, and then rising past the jocks who are at the top now, but won't be in college/after college when they aren't athletes anymore, and they are working for the guy who was like me when he was in high school (bullied and unpopular).

@ Maslada---> What the hell do you mean by "the emo girl at your school says hi"????

@ Evolutia---> Just because the Drews were the last ones to belittle her, it doesn't mean they were the largest contributors, or the most crucial. The girl who called her fat and stupid and butthead in the 1st-3rd grade is just as responsible...and nobody is more responsible than she is because nobody forced her to die, she killed HERSELF.

Also @ Maslada---> Lol I am not trolling...

Rather than balming people for what had happened, people should be educated about depression and other topics to prevent such a horrible thing to happen again.

It is hard to be nice to people when you feel pissed/upset a lot.
Also of course you wouldn't feel the need to commit suicide, but you are mentally stable. Depression can make you feel completely down and worthless, which will lead to suicide. Since you dont have depression, and you are not close with anyone who has it, you cannot say what it is like to have it. (and yes, I dont have it, but my sister has struggled with it for years)

She could very easily have hung out with the wrong people (ie the popular girls) who would say mean things to her (duh fat + popular=asking for trouble). She was not popular with anyone... nobody would except her

Again, you dont have depression so suicidal thoughts would be uncommon for you to have. Depression often comes with suicidal thoughts, especially in stressful situations, or when you are facing a situation that would make anyone upset.

No, but you were insulting people with depression by calling it BS...
