2013 Music

The new Parenthetical Girls is amazing, of course.

This band has the modern indie-pop scene dominated by now, tbh. Entanglements was basically the best chamber pop record ever. I still love Owen Pallett and Sufjan Stevens and St Vincent etc. but jesus christ I could never choose any of that over this.

MBV is okay and all but I think too many people trip all over themselves to proclaim their love for Loveless. In my opinion, outside of "Sometimes" it's a pretty average album. And Isn't Anything is even worse.

Best shoegaze band of all time for me is Slowdive, who always lived in MBV's shadow. Just For a Day is fucking perfection.

Sometimes might be the best case of composition on the album (great melodies and general progression) but for an album whose defining aspects are its production quality and sonic textures, it strikes me as a bit of a weak choice for a standout. It might be my favorite on the album, but it doesn't really exemplify why the album is loved. The more manic Blown a Wish or the swirling To Here Knows When are anything but average.

m b v is pretty boring imo.

I completely agree with the Parenthetical Girls statement. I didn't follow them slowly releasing new content, and I thought Entanglement was just ok but Privilege is really, really good.

Oh sure, I totally understand the gravity of the album and the vast influence it had on music, especially on some of my favorite bands (like Hum). But I just can't see anything special about the individual songs. It's in the same way that I am 100% cognizant of how important Nirvana was, but the majority of their discography bores me.

Just watched the Brit award, damn I have had Mirros (new JT song) on repeat since the moment I saw it. 2013 is the year of the Timberlake.

I didn't quite reply to you in a very coherent way initially because of my blinding excitement for m b v, but anyways.

I can very much understand why you're not keen on the tracks as individual entities and why you think MBV is overrated. Whether it be the fawning, borderline pretentious rants like "the swirling guitar encapsulate the true state of a dream!" or the readily apparent simplicity being touted as beautifully abstract and complex, it's really not something that is going to click well for people of different tastes.

Quite honestly, the abstract nature of how people to perceive it can be the greatest strength and weakness of Loveless and much of MBV's discography. It can be some sonic wasteland of pink or something that is uselessly intangible. Nothing's wrong with either.

Well, I wasn't really talking about gravity or influence, I actually rarely care about those things. I was just saying that it's really brilliantly produced.

Entanglements apathy is heartbreaking :( best indie pop record ever you guise!

Just listened to Elite from Within The Ruins and it's pretty good! They're a sort of mix between metalcore (yeah I know) and tech-death (!) with some prog influences here and there. They sort of overdo it on the breakdowns but overall they're some talented guys worth checking out!

I hope this means a new world tour >_<.

" The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014."

that's good enough for me lol, my favourite band is back and I get to see'm live ! nothing can stop me now >:)

couldn't give a shit about tours since the odds of them coming to my specific city is probably not even worth making a joke about.

a new album would be nice though.

Well I just found out that Switchfoot is releasing their 9th album, Fading West, in May. Why didn't I know about this!!!! It's actually a soundtrack to a film/documentary understand the same name that they're releasing at the same time, which is interesting, though the album will be good either way. Switchfoot is pretty much at the stage where they can release anything and I'll enjoy it.

Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse (Alt-Indie group from Scotland) is a really good album, I'm really enjoying it so far, on my 4th listen now !
