Other Tier 35 Pokes-- October 2025

Was thinking about making a role compendium for 35, so here it goes. Many Pokemon/Role combinations shown aren't completely viable (a few so unviable i've even separated them with a "|"), but I still think it's good to show possibilities and help team structures in 35 push each single member of 35's limited pool to it's limits. WIll likely get updated later. EDIT: Also check out Oceanic's Role Compendium made just a day before mine! It's below this post.

yeah...

It's come to my attention that up until now the Unown clause hasn't been written anywhere, largely because up until now it simply hasn't came up.
You may check the updated rules on the main post, but the long and short is: the move Hidden Power is illegal on all pokemon except Unown.

To clarify: Unown is the only pokemon allowed to use Hidden Power

To let everyone know that the council aren't actually sleeping, we have held a vote on 3 Pokemon: Frosmoth, Oricorio, and Overqwil. This vote has concluded and results will be up later today.

:overqwil:: Overqwil has solidified itself as the tier's top offensive threat. Possessing the 2nd highest speed tier second to Oricorio and access to Swords Dance + good bulk with Intimidate, attempts to check it after an SD becomes a pretty challenging task. After all, its STABs are only resisted by itself and even the bulkiest physically defensive we have access to are either 2HKOd by Gunk Shot like Turtonator or weak to its other STAB like Gourgeist-XL. In addition to this, Overqwil can utilise its other ability in Swift Swim. It may require suppoet from a teammate for manual rain but it can bypass Oricorio's speed tier as well as not speed tieing with opposing Overqwil, Pinsir and Golduck. Overqwil's strain on the builder and the meta at large was noticed very early on.

:oricorio:: Oricorio is also just as threatening or even more threatening than Overqwil. Similar in their set up potential, thanks to Oricorio's access to Quiver Dance but dissimilar due to Oricorio possessing the highest speed tier in the metagame. This specific attribute of the fire bird renders offensive counterplay to it irrelevant, as you cannot use a Choice Scarfer to revenge kill if it has a +1 boost. Like Overqwil as well, its STABs are difficult to switch into and no Pokemon in the format resists them. Oricorio has very few checks, the best people have found are using Pokemon like Kecleon, AV Wishiwashi and Ampharos, and specially defensive Gabite. Unfortunately, only one of these has reliable recovery and the rest of its checks are vulnerable to hazards, making them inconsistent checks in the long run.

:frosmoth:: Frosmoth may not be as controversial as the aforementioned two, probably because Oricorio has a x4 type matchup against it and can abuse Moth's attempts at setup and it's slower than them, but it still winds up to be an oppressive threat in its own right. It essentially does act like a slower, more specially bulky Oricorio with a much higher damage output and more dangerous STAB combination. Checks to Oricorio like SpD Gabite are rendered absolutely useless in the face of Frosmoth and the two pair quite well together since they can eventually just overwhelm their checks. Ice Scales is also great in helping Frosmoth realistically only being dealt with on the physical side, reducing its counterplay. Mentioned earlier, Frosmoth's speed is its detriment and there are some speed control options that can check it like Pinsir but as long as Oricorio is present these speed control options are hard to consider running. The metagame overall is also quite slow and Frosmoth is only outsped by 10/35 pokemon so is its speed as much of an issue as it appears?

One thing you forgot to mention is that it has an insane ability in Ice Scales (half damage from Special Attacks). This mean that it can sponge Special attempts to kill it, as I have found my Modest Life Orb Golduck incapable of OHKOing it with Power Gem, which is insane (although it isn't STAB Power Gem so)

overqwil already getting banned is crazy... i wanted to use it to get freelo at least a little bit longer

Depending on the council's decision, this can also be a big day for eggs as it might be slightly less bad :)
Centi also goes a lot harder with no ori and one less intimidate mon. Probably a niche for eggs but I can't think of what atm

Here are the results of the council vote:

1730960604805.png

The votes concerning Overqwill and Oricorio both surpassed the 60% threshold required for tiering, and so both pokemon in question were quickbanned from the November 2024 format without a suspect test. No consensus was reached regarding Frosmoth at this time, and so the council agreed to revisit the matter at a later date and once the replacement pokemon were revealed.

As the replacement pokemon are now known to be Gorebyss and Galvantula, the council has currently resumed discussion concerning Frosmoth.

Im I tripping or does tspike qwilfish look really good this month? Not very many options for immunities/absobers
It's actually become one of the mons I see most this month. The most common sets have been either choice scarf or hazard setting, and it's a large part of the reason things like Pinsir are forced to run Earthquake.

POKEMON ANALYSIS: TURTONATOR
Turtonator stands out as one of November's most impactful Pokemons thanks to its great stats and move distribution, which give it great sweeping capability and decent utility. At first glance, Turtonator may not look intimidating; base 36 Speed and 91 Sp.Atk are not particularly remarkable. However, after Shell Smash and maximum Speed investment, Turtonator is able to outspeed the metagame's entire roster not factoring abilities, Items or Sticky Web. Its good dragon/fire STAB combination allows it to pose an enormous threat to whatever opponent it faces. It’s capable of knocking out the vast majority of the remaining 34 Mons in one or two hits--not to mention it's ability to go physical and great coverage against the metagames most prominent Bug-Types in Head Smash. Not only does Turtonator hit incredibly hard, but it also can live hits often thanks to its Fire/Dragon typing, high Defense stat and the metagame's shortage of Rock and Ground types (the only STAB-boosted move of these types come from Trapinch or Gabite). Other than as a Shell Smash sweeper against weakened teams, Turtonator shines in the role of an utility support by way of Rapid Spin, Will-o-wisp, Dragon Tail/Roar, Toxic and Taunt. However, Turtonator is not without flaws. As a sweeper it requires team support to be able to safely set up Shell Smash, as it is otherwise vulnerable to be damaged or phased out. It either needs to commit to White Herb, leaving it vulnerable to hazard damage or miscellaneous stat drops, or use Heavy Duty Boots which don't prevent the negative stat changes from Shell Smash. It also has to choose between the extremely powerful but crippling Draco Meteor, which is prone to miss, and Dragon Pulse which is significantly weaker, but 100% accurate, and faces a similar situation between Fire Blast and Flamethrower.

Turtonator also faces some competition both as a hazard cleaner and as a sweeper from mons such as Tsareena and Frosmoth and can have its ability to deal damage limited if it finds itself in rain, after Draco Meteor Sp.Atk drops, or if its stronger but missing-prone attacks don’t hit. It has no reliable means of recovery by itself, is vulnerable to Status conditions and can be potentially brought down or crippled by specially defensive pokemon such as Araquanid, Ampharos, Kecleon, Wigglytuff, Trapinch, Gabite, any Water-type Pokemons, and any fast scarfers that can outspeed it even after a shell smash. Credits and big thanks to Ocean and Typhon for quality checking and helping me finish this!

a 35 pokes meta with 1 allowed uber could be entertaining (or maybe 1 uber per team). even tho ledian would still cook
It was actually already discussed before and considered a very bad idea. It could work in doubles (not unlike restrictes metas in VGC), but in singles its very easy to have a clearly overpowered mon 6-0 your opponent
