BATTLE SPOT SINGLES CLASSIC VII

Welcome to the seventh Battle Spot Stadium Singles Classic Tournament! Dust off your Dynamax/Gigamax, Z Crystals, Mega Stones, and gems and get ready for some old gens action! Players will be facing each other in three BSS-based formats between GBU Singles, ORAS BSS, and USUM BSS and SS BSS, in the form of a best-of-three. This tournament will award Circuit Points that goes towards the 2023 Invitational at the end of the year that awards a ribbon on the forums.

Specific Rules
  • The tournament will be Best of Three of SS BSS, USUM BSS, ORAS BSS, GBU Singles. The tournament is Double Elimination.
  • The first tier will be chosen based on !pick (Gen 8 Battle Stadium Singles). The loser of the first game gets to pick the format for the second game. You cannot play the same generation multiple times!
  • SS BSS will be played SERIES 12.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown/SmogTours.
  • Replays must be saved and POSTED. Matches without a replay will not count as completed. If you don't want to risk forgetting to save replays play on Smogtours as it's automatic there.
  • In an event of a timeout, the player who times out will lose that game unless the opponent grants a rematch. This holds true even for a disconnect, due to being unable to know which three Pokemon have been selected at team preview. Consequently, players do not need to send in their teams to a TD.
  • Activity calls and coinflips will be done by myself and the pick command on Pokemon Showdown respectively.
Sample Teams:
SS
USUM
ORAS
GBU

Simulator Glitches: Any battle mechanics not properly implemented in the simulator used for a tournament battle are fair game, unless explicitly banned by that tournament's rules. Illegal movesets that are not restricted by the simulator fall into this category as well. However, this does not include faulty tier scripts; for example, if there was a bug in the BW OU tier script that allowed you to use Drizzle and Swift Swim on the same team, taking advantage of this would result in disqualification in that battle. If a game breaking glitch is discovered, we will make a blanket tournament ban on that glitch via an announcement in the Tournaments forum until it is fixed.

Ghosting: The player in a tournament battle should be the one making their own decisions. Do not tell a player what move to make in a tournament battle (i.e. do not "ghost" them), and do not make your moves based on another person's suggestions. If we are made aware that someone playing a tournament battle is making some of their moves based mainly on the suggestions of someone else, punishments may be handed out to both parties involved.

Identity: Pretending to be another player in relation to a tournament battle is strictly prohibited. Do not try to impersonate or play as another player. This applies to the use of alts as well. Any player who breaks this will be disqualified and may be subject to further punishment.

Rule Breaking: If a player breaks a rule during a battle, they are disqualified from that particular battle. If it was a single battle in a series, they will still have the opportunity to play the rest of the series.

Draws: If a battle ends in a draw in an elimination tournament or another tournament format that is unable to handle draws, there should be a rematch between the players with the option for both players to change teams.

Forfeiting: A player may forfeit their battle during or after the battle, as long as the result has not been confirmed by the host. If a player forfeits before a battle commences in the first round of a tournament, they are eligible for substitution if appropriate. We highly recommend that you do not forfeit your tournament battles just because you got lucky, but we do not enforce this.

Host / Tournament Director Decisions: The host may make a judgment call on the outcome of a battle with a disputed result, even if one player has broken the rules. If you believe the host has made an unjust decision, you may inform the Tournament Director responsible for the tournament of the situation and request that they make a final call on it.

Sportsmanship: If a player displays exceedingly poor sportsmanship before, during, or after a tournament battle, they may be disqualified or otherwise punished.

If you have questions you can send me a message on discord (luisin) or join our BSS discord.

Deadline for finals will be... just play it

Thank you for organising the tour Railgun!

And thank you to all the lovely people that contributed to the old-gens sample team threads!

A special shout-out to Darkinium, you don't know me, but your teams GBU teams were/are amazing and they were one of the main reason why I won this tournament!

I did not expect this tour to go so well, but it's a nice feeling to finally win something here after coming close several times before :)

I know that winning one of our somewhat small BSS tours here is not the biggest achievement, but I will nonetheless take the time to write a little bit about the tournment and my personal pokemon journey, why not...

I am someone who only signs up for tours where I know I can at least put up a challange. Because of that, I have only signed up for BSS tours so far, since it's the only metagame that I'm actively playing. Last year I did not sign up for classics because I have only really played SwSh when it comes to the old gens and I did not feel competent enough to put up a good fight. However, I realised that you mainly end up using old (sample)teams in this tour, since it's basically impossible to test new teams (especially for all 4 generations). I liked the concept of this, because I find it somewhat stressful to build and test teams when I compete in current gen tournaments. This also helped me being a lot more relaxed in this tour, because I did not have work out a decent team every week and in general I did not have any expectation for myself, considering I did not play the majority of the old gens.

On my way to the finals I always had to start with GBU and for some reason I managed to win all those games. I did actually get into competetive pokemon in Gen 5 and played quite a bit on Pokemon Online as a kid. I must have been terrible at it and mainly used my favourites instead of stuff that was actually usable (I still kind of do this now, but with a lot more thought behind it). Back then I had no idea what an elo system or a damage calculator was, I just used random EV spreads that felt right. Interestingly enough, I mainly played on Pokemon Online to find a perfect team that I could build on cartridge - I was never really satisfied playing on the simulator and this is probably why I ended up with BSS a lot later in gen 8.

During gens 6 and 7 I was broadly aware about what was happening in competetive pokemon through YouTube videos, but I did not actively play the game. Towards the middle/end of gen 8 I decided to get a Nintendo Switch and I liked the idea of playing competetive mons again with SwSh. With the much improved accessibility to playing competetive on cartridge, I could finally accomplish my goal of building my team(s) in game (without tooo much grinding). Due to the fact that I don't like playing doubles (I'm not sure why, It feels unnatural to me... But I like watching VGC tournaments) I ended up with BSS. I had to (re)learn a lot and it took a while until I actually started to get a positive win/loss ratio, but I got better. Along the way I found out that there was an actual English community for these 3v3 battles. I believe it was through marilli's YouTube videos, which were in general really helpful for me back in SwSh. Thank you for those videos marilli, if you end up reading this :) In early 2023 I started to participate in the smogon BSS tournaments, which helped me get a little bit involved in the community through some solid results. I know that I'm not overly vocal or very involved in the community, but I try to stay on top of the ideas and opinions people write in the BSS-chat (despite rarely contributing myself) and the people all seem very nice.

Back to the classics tournament, I got pretty lucky and won through a combination of throws from my opponents and the fact that I discovered some hidden GBU skills that I didn't know I had (and that I still don't think I have). I lost ALL of my gen 6 and 7 gemes and then won all of my gen 5 and 8 games. I had a decent BSSPL last year playing gen 8, so I was able to reuse those teams, which was enough for me to win my SwSh games. However, during those gen 8 games I definitely profited from 1 or 2 of my opponents throwing from winning postions. In general I tried to use new teams every single round (with 2 exceptions), which was a good decision, since some of my opponents did not do that and that way I was several times very prepared for the team they ended up bringing.
