A Colo(u)rful Walr(o)us

6. Termi
Stereolab - Fluorescences
Color 3 / Song 4

Player's Argument:
orange to me is the color of summer and sun and to me this song feels very pleasant and summery

My Thoughts:
Very breezy kind of warm. I love this song. Very much on the cusp of breaking the 4-point barrier, and I think I'm just going to put this band on my list of acts to research right now.

5. Lord Quas
Rubba - Gypsy Manou
Color 3.1 / Song 3.9

Player's Argument:
Orange strong ties with transforming and rebirth to me. It’s a mash of multiple colors, and it always represented adventuring and exploring the beyond (in a hopeful way). This track has this sort of beautiful but adventuresome feel to it. It is one basic structure but it reinvents itself as it goes on, and in a pretty epic way imo. Also it apparently is the color of transformation in Confucianism, the more you know.

My Thoughts:
Odd angle but I dig it. Rad song, I wish I could find more than nothing about them online.

4. Andy Snype
insaneintherainmusic - Sinnoh Trainer Battle Medley
Color 4 / Song 3.7

Player's Argument:
okay here's a multi-color piece that i'd say is pretty orange. begins with an intro that keeps your heart on-edge, the normal anxiety-inducing of wild pokemon encounter fits orange. while the song isn't purely orange, it's got several recurring elements between the brass, violin, and percussion that continue the edge-of-the-seat that comes with orange

My Thoughts:
Snype originally sent a song themed around "warning", but I really didn't hear it in the song. This was a cool compromise, as it has that Orange energy I've been talking about, but also incorporates the sense of danger that Junichi Masuda is known for with the stings that open Pokemon battles (which I still think is a very Yellow sound, but it's a small part of the song overall). Much better DPP music than Snowpoint City, especially when covered like this. I think this and Spear Pillar are my favorite tracks.

3. shubaka17
Maris - 18 Forever
Color 5 / Song 2.9

Player's Argument:
you ever go out to wawa with ur highschool friends in his shitty beater but at least you don't have to walk? and then after everyone gets their milkshakes and munchies you all sit in the parking lot laughing at your math teacher's weird obsession with cat memes from 2008? and there you sit under the red and white fake neon sign and for once in your life you feel like things are going right? no? just me? cool well anyways this is that song

My Thoughts:
If we follow the track that other songs have been laying down, then I feel everything points to this song being the perfect Orange submission. Couldn't really describe it better than you did. Now, do I like the song? I don't dislike it. I don't feel bad about the full-play. So take your podium and like it.

2. Martin
Little Richard - Tutti Frutti
Color 4.5 / Song 3.8

Player's Argument:
Don’t really know what makes something orange but I kinda imagine that colour when I hear this and fruity is a pretty orange word.

My Thoughts:
Can we say that Orange is the color of fruit? Lebossle already sorta did, but does that make any sense when fruit comes in all kinds of colors? I think that yes, it actually sorta does, because fruit is fun and sweet and Orange is hella fun and sweet. And this is one of the all-time vibing songs so it just feels like an inspired submission.

As a song, I originally overrated this a lot. It really is one of the best pre-pop songs. But the more I listened to other submissions, the more I felt I actually liked some other more. But it was a good category for song quality all-around.

1. Aladynn
Anneke van Giersbergen - Sunny Side Up
Color 3.9 / Song 4.5

Player's Argument:
Orange is warm and pleasant. Like a nice summer day.

My Thoughts:
This song grew a ton on me and really warped the category as I kept increasing its song score. Now that I've listened to it several times on its own just because it's an earworm, we are here in first place. I love this kind of alternative rock and it even has a bit of a folk edge. Folk sure seems to be a recurring idea this category.

19. Lord Quas
Dorian Electra - Daddy Like
Color 2.5 / Song 1.9

Player's Argument:
Glitzy, poppy, and sensual. Pink and this song have all of both.

My Thoughts:
For some reason this artist infected my Youtube recs more than any other submitted, so I am now well aware of their music and ready to hear cries of robbery. Even though there's some similarity to acts like Erasure, I just really don't like this music. It goes too far in trying to be gauche.

The song is also clearly about a pathetic older sugar daddy type, and while it may have some of the Pink qualities you listed, it is gross and Pink is not gross.

18. shubaka17
Ateez - Twilight
Color 3 / Song 2.1

Player's Arguments:
love song still, mentions red and blue but no pink. woodwinds, tropical vibes, and in the last verse he says the sunset looks at us with jealousy for how pretty we are (again orating, not actually you and me, although i'm sure you're a remarkably attractive person)

My Thoughts:
When you said you would submit KPOP, this isn't what I had in mind. For the past few years, Korean pop has been chasing western music really aggressively, and this is a prime example of music that crosses more into sounds I don't like than sounds I do.

17. nutella
Glass Animals - Your Love
Color 2.7 / Song 2.5

Player's Argument:
Most everything by this band sounds to me like what sticky, soft, slimey bubblegum would sound like if it were music. In a pleasant way.

My Thoughts:
This is the perfect follow-up to the last song, as it has everything but the guest raps. Odd idea of what bubblegum sounds like, but I think the psychadelic sounds kind of work.

16. termi
Crass - Bata Motel
Color 2.9 / Song 2.3

Player's Argument:
initially when thinking of the color pink my mind drifted towards "something innocent or effeminate" and noticed immediately how pink simultaneously associated with femininity and "childlike innocence." as a good radical feminist i can't help but feel that this connection is no coincidence, since woman under patriarchy is infantilized, continuously seen as not (yet) fully human. the passive to man's active; the submissive to man's dominant; the created rather than the creator (adam and eve say hello). this song to me is therefore pink in an indirect sense, critiquing the notion of the woman-as-child (which is represented in part in the color pink) through its satirization of the woman as the ultimate passive, submissive non-agent, and rejecting this view of womanhood through its feminist message. tl;dr this song pink cuz feminism (also i couldnt think of anything else on a whim so i got philosophical to bail myself out as tho this was any more convenient than if i just thought of a "gay anthem" or something and called it a day)

My Thoughts:
Gosh, I just thought listening to artists like Amy Grant, Kylie Minogue, and Wilson Phillips was harmless fun. More fun than most punk rock, which this isn't really converting me to.

15. Andy Snype
Madeon - Pay No Mind
Color 3.3 / Song 2

Player's Argument:
i know most ppl think to be a pretty feminine color, but i don't hold it as a girly color as much as a color that suggests lightheartted joy. this song is pink

My Thoughts:
Works as far as the color but I'd have liked it more as a Yellow song. As for the song itself, it's okay I guess but I really don't dig the singing. Honestly I don't think much of this other than "hey, they did that anime song".

14. The Quasar
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Color 1 / Song 5

Player's Argument:
Well, Pink in music can be only a thing. The quintessentially of music. I don't think there's more to say.
I just hope you choose Pink Floyd too, with another song :)

Are you kidding me? **Pink Floyd**. For me Pink and Music are equal to Pink Floyd. More than a simply association. I can’t think of anything else. :)

You know, the name Pink Floyd is derived from the given names of two blues musicians whose Piedmont blues records Barrett had in his collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. For me could be Pink Floyd to give name to the color !!! :D

My Thoughts:
This is my personal anthem for when you hate your job/lot in life. So not Pink.

Best song by Pink Floyd. Is it really in the spirit of the competition to give this such a decent score? Maybe, maybe not, but there's only about 50 songs I would give a score of 5 to, so it's a much safer bet to try for color.

13. Schiavetto
Kimbra - Settle Down
Color 3.7 / Song 2.7

Player's Argument:
I think song does a pretty good job of dramatizing the playground version of a loving relationship, the kind of "picture-perfect" vision of marriage that sells Barbie Dreamhomes. Kimbra covers a fair bit of ground as an artist, but I think a lot of the poppier tracks on Vows (and this one especially) tend to come across as pink to me.

My Thoughts:
Oh, person from Somebody That I Used to Know. This song is quite okay even though I don't like a lot of music like this. It's a nice Pink submission too, a much better "ironic" pic than earlier songs. Takes a bit to kick the Pink into high gear though.

11. Lebossle
Meghan Trainer - All About That Bass
Color 4.8 / Song 1.7

Player's Argument:
it's girlish, and the video is sooo pink

My Thoughts:
Way too overplayed for me to be anything but confident about it being a bad song (not saying that being played a lot is bad, just that this had a hundred chances to impress me and and failed). Very classically girly.

10. Ghostwheel
Strawberry Girls - First Kiss
Color 2.8 / Song 4

Player's Argument:
Pink is also a more positive color, but the thing that distinguishes pink most clearly for me over other positive colors is how layered and comfortable and warm it can be. It's difficult to describe, but it feels like the different layers of the song are washing over me in sequence, each giving me that warm and cozy feeling.

My Thoughts:
I am going to give you a lot more leeway on color here. I think it works. Also, the song is the coolest one you have sent so far. Very rad instrumentation.

9. Celever
Adele - Daydreamer
Color 3.6 / Song 3.4

Player's Argument:
It's 2011. It's Valentine's Day. You've just got a new job with a high payrise. To celebrate, you take your fianceé out for a meal at an upscale restaurant. The lights are a dim pink for the occasion, and the tables have rose petals and candles flickering. As you dig into the breadsticks, a pre-mainstream Adele begins her performance with this delicate song as you stare into your partner's eyes.

That's pink.

My Thoughts:
Love Adele. Not familiar with this song, or at least this live version. Not the Pinkest song or the best Adele, but good enough at both to hit high marks overall.

7. BLOODYRAIN
Aimer - Poker Face
Color 3.5 / Song 3.9

Player's Argument:
Pink can cover a lot of things, but the ideas in mind here are femininity and eros. Hence the extremely sexual lyrics and a female vocalist.

My Thoughts:
For me, one of the highlight of this Walrus so far has been listening to this album, Your Favorite Things. This isn't the best song from that album, but it's still dope and a good Pink pick.

6. Oddish
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is a Place on Earth
Color 3.9 / Song 3.6

Player's Argument:
Pink is definitely a "love" color. One of them at least. It's that sort of soft/tender kind of love. It feels really idealistic, sort of dream/movie-like, if that makes sense? I don't have very many love songs in my library fsr, but this song definitely fits that idea well at least.

My Thoughts:
Bold move picking a song with heaven in the title, but a lot of songs blur the line between Pink and White, and this one is very poppy so it works well. A bit of a cloying 80s artist that I'm sure some won't appreciate, but there is a good beat here when the chorus isn't getting in the way.

5. Panic Station
Hunter Foster and Kerry Marie Buttler - Suddenly Seymour
Color 4 / Song 3.7

Player's Argument:
unconditional and romantic love, compassion and understanding, romance, hope, sweetness, naiveté, being physically weak, being naive, immature and girlish, lack of will power and lack of self worth
This set of keywords mostly describes the characters singing it, but a song about love and hope fits well for pink.

My Thoughts:
Really fun musical. Not a song I remembered from it, but I like this version well enough. Very Pink form of love here.

4. Sultan of Skook
Eric Whitacre - Seal Lullaby
Color 4.7 / Song 3

Player's Argument:
Pink is associated with birth and with love, and thus a song that a mother would sing to her child is fitting for the theme.

My Thoughts:
I like interesting angles and I think this one really works. Reminds me of something that would go in a 90s movie.

3. Aladyyn
Girl's Day - Don't Trust Her
Color 4.9 / Song 2.9

Player's Argument:
Playful, sweet, romantic, naive. Simple songs that put a smile on one's face are the name of the game here.

My Thoughts:
Song opens with "This is how we do it" and I couldn't agree more when it comes to KPOP. This is how its done. It could even be done a little better, but this is certainly fine and super bubblegum.
