A Warstory of Firsts

Hello there Smogon, this is my first post here. I’ve actually been lurking around Smogon since the fall of last year. ._. I guess I never got around to deciding to post until now.

This warstory (my first) is a battle I felt was pretty entertaining and quite exciting. I’ve just downloaded and battled on Shoddy today, so it’s my first team and this battle is around my 7th. I’ll try my best to satisfy you all, because I have been around here for almost half a year now, and I know how this place runs. XD

I used a lame Sandstorm team that I threw together this morning to just test Shoddy out. I didn’t get around to asking my opponent if he wanted to be in a warstory, so he’ll be replaced with “Opponent.” Clever, I know.
No more intro:

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause, Soul Dew Clause

My team: Lummox~ Log in black. Comments in blue. There is little stalling involved so Lefties and such will be left in.

Lummox sent out Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Opponent sent out Ninjask (lvl 100 Ninjask ?).
Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!
Ninjask used Sunny Day.
The sandstorm stopped.
The sun began to shine!
Hippowdon used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
The sun continues to shine.
Ninjask's Speed Boost raised its speed!

Alright, a Ninjask lead. I know Ninjask can do very little to Hippowdon, and his predictable boosts can be Roared away by Hippowdon. I find very little risk in Stealth Rocking, which also completely rips Ninjask in half should it come back later on. This Ninjask actually used Sunny Day, though, which surprised me.

Ninjask used Swords Dance.
Ninjask's attack was sharply raised.
Hippowdon used Roar.
Opponent switched in Zapdos (lvl 100 Zapdos).
Zapdos is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Zapdos.
Zapdos lost 25% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.
Zapdos's leftovers restored its health a little!
Zapdos restored 6% of its health.
---

450-f.png
vs.
145.png

Zapdos used Heat Wave.
Hippowdon lost 42% of its health.
Hippowdon used Roar.
Opponent switched in Steelix (lvl 100 Steelix ?).
Pointed stones dug into Steelix.
Steelix lost 3% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.
Steelix's leftovers restored its health a little!
Steelix restored 3% of its health.

So I Roar like I planned to prevent the Ninjask from passing boosts and to scout a little, and in comes a Zapdos. I feel unthreatened, but yet I can do nothing to it as my only attacking move is Earthquake. I just roar again to see more of the team, and in comes a Steelix. I go for the Earthquake.
450-f.png

208-m.png

Hippowdon used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Steelix lost 46% of its health.
Steelix used Stealth Rock.
The sun continues to shine.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.
Steelix's leftovers restored its health a little!
Steelix restored 6% of its health.
---
Hippowdon used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Steelix lost 47% of its health.
Steelix used Curse.
Steelix's speed was lowered.
Steelix's attack was raised.
Steelix's defence was raised.
The sun continues to shine.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.
Steelix's leftovers restored its health a little!
Steelix restored 6% of its health.
---
Hippowdon used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Steelix lost 20% of its health.
Opponent’s Steelix fainted.
The sun continues to shine.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

These few turns are very dumb and straightforward. I Earthquake to damage it a bit and it Stealth Rocks, but my team is largely unhindered by it. I was thinking about Roaring again if my opponent predicted another Earthquake and switched to Ninjask or Zapdos, but I decided to not overpredict and just EQ again. His Curse couldn’t save him from the third one.

Opponent switched in Victreebel (lvl 100 Victreebel ?).
Pointed stones dug into Victreebel.
Victreebel lost 12% of its health.
Victreebel used Sleep Powder.
Hippowdon fell asleep!
Hippowdon is fast asleep!
The sun continues to shine.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.
---
Victreebel used Solarbeam.
It's super effective!
Hippowdon lost 89% of its health.
Lummox's Hippowdon fainted.
The sun faded.

Here, I make terrible mistakes. I decide to leave Hippowdon in against a Victreebel. I tried to guess it had a Swords Dance set with moves such as Leaf Blade and Sucker Punch, but I failed to remember the Sleep Powder they almost always carry. I make my second mistake by leaving Hippowdon in and it eats a Solarbeam. >_> So it’s most probably not physical.

For the obligatory hindsight predictions, I should have let something else take the Sleep Powder and bring in Hippowdon right after to nullify the sun (and maybe unknowingly screw up Solarbeam).

Lummox switched in Flygon (lvl 100 Flygon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Flygon.
Flygon lost 6% of its health.
Opponent switched in Arcanine (lvl 100 Arcanine ?).
Pointed stones dug into Arcanine.
Arcanine lost 25% of its health.
Flygon used Fire Blast.
Arcanine's Flash Fire raised its fire power!
Arcanine's leftovers restored its health a little!
Arcanine restored 6% of its health.

I bring in a Scarfed Flygon to try to revenge, which is really stupid considering double speed is faster than 1.5 times speed. I was going to U-turn at first, but I didn’t want my next Pokemon to eat a Solarbeam (which wouldn’t have happened, because Victreebel is faster and would have Solarbeamed Flygon before it left). I opted for Fire Blast and my opponent manages to get in a Flash Fire boost. >_>

Lummox switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gliscor.
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
Arcanine used Will-o-wisp.
Gliscor was burned!
Arcanine's leftovers restored its health a little!
Arcanine restored 6% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
---
Arcanine used Flare Blitz.
Gliscor lost 61% of its health.
Arcanine was hit by recoil!
Arcanine lost 22% of its health.
Gliscor used Taunt.
Arcanine fell for the taunt!
Arcanine's leftovers restored its health a little!
Arcanine restored 6% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
---
Arcanine used Extremespeed.
A critical hit!
Gliscor lost 2% of its health.
Lummox's Gliscor fainted.
Arcanine's leftovers restored its health a little!
Arcanine restored 6% of its health.

Fail. I have no idea what I was thinking. The Gliscor was a pure Baton Passing set, though, so to see the silver lining the burn wouldn’t have hurt much. ^^
On another note, Shoddy doesn’t say when the sunlight ends.

Lummox switched in Rhyperior (lvl 100 Rhyperior ?).
Pointed stones dug into Rhyperior.
Rhyperior lost 6% of its health.
Opponent switched in Zapdos (lvl 100 Zapdos).
Zapdos is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Zapdos.
Zapdos lost 25% of its health.
Rhyperior used Aqua Tail.
Zapdos lost 26% of its health.
Zapdos's leftovers restored its health a little!
Zapdos restored 6% of its health.

I bring in Rhyperior (who is supposed to receive Gliscor’s boosts) because I believe Arcanine can’t do much to me (and Taunt prevents Will-o-Wisp. ^^). I don’t want to use Earthquake to give Ninjask and Zapdos a free switch in, but I don’t want to Stone Edge because I hate the accuracy. I find Aqua Tail the best to beat on the dog if it stays or at least damage something that switches in.

The next few turns are just Zapdos Roosting and me trying to kill it with Earthquake and Stone Edge.

464-m.png

Zapdos used Roost.
Zapdos restored 50% of its health.
Rhyperior used Stone Edge.

Zapdos restored 6% of its health.
---
Zapdos used Roost.
Zapdos restored 50% of its health.
Rhyperior used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Zapdos lost 80% of its health.
Opponent’s Zapdos fainted.

He tries to play the lucky prediction game, and I decide to play along but just Earthquake. It’s bound to hit if he tries to jump between moves and Roost.

Opponent switched in Dragonite (lvl 100 Dragonite ?).
Pointed stones dug into Dragonite.
Dragonite lost 25% of its health.
Dragonite used Toxic.
Dragonite's attack missed!
Rhyperior used Stone Edge.
Rhyperior's attack missed!
Dragonite's leftovers restored its health a little!
Dragonite restored 6% of its health.

I go for the obvious Stone Edge to see if I can take it out, and I know no one on his team can take rock moves (since Steelix is down) in case he wants to switch for whatever reason.
Nothing interesting happened here except Dragonite healing 6%.

464-m.png
vs.
149-m.png

Dragonite used Toxic.
Rhyperior was badly poisoned!
Rhyperior's Lum Berry cured its Poison!
Rhyperior used Stone Edge.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Dragonite lost 81% of its health.
Opponent’s Dragonite fainted.

The Lum Berry is defense from status like that when Rhyperior has +2 attack and speed and on a sweep, but it helps here too as I kill the Dragonite with what I’m pretty sure is an unnecessary critical.

Lummox: Sorry. :(
Ninjask used Sunny Day.
The sun began to shine!
Rhyperior used Aqua Tail.
Ninjask lost 40% of its health.
The sun continues to shine.
Ninjask's Speed Boost raised its speed!
---
Ninjask used X-Scissor.
Rhyperior lost 24% of its health.
Rhyperior used Stone Edge.
It's super effective!
Ninjask lost 10% of its health.
Opponent’s Ninjask fainted.
The sun continues to shine.

I apologize for the missed Wisp, because that really would have stopped Rhyperior cold. Arcanine is drowned, and the bee comes back to set up sun. I was really reluctant to use the shaky accuracy of Stone Edge to kill such a fragile arthropod at half health, so it survives an Aqua Tail under the sun. I decide to Stone Edge next in case it tried to pass speed to something else, but it just kills Ninjask.

Opponent switched in Victreebel (lvl 100 Victreebel ?).

Victreebel used Solarbeam.
It's super effective!
Rhyperior lost 48% of its health.
Lummox's Rhyperior fainted.
The sun continues to shine.

Nothing much here, really. I let Rhyperior die because it’s done quite a bit and can do no more (nothing else likes to eat a Solarbeam, also).

Lummox's Magnezone fainted.
The sun continues to shine.

I switch in a Scarf Magnezone because it resists Solarbeam (and I’m still dumb in thinking a Scarf will help outspeed). I sit there hoping Magnezone wakes up and Hidden Power Fires, but the flytrap 3KOs my magnet. I guess it helped stall out turns of sun.

Flygon lost 6% of its health.
Victreebel used Sunny Day.
The sun began to shine!
The sun continues to shine.

I switch in Empoleon to be sleep fodder (he sweeps teams when Gliscor gives it a Rock Polish. Such a shame :<) and bring in Flygon to try to kill. Unfortunately, it sets up Sun again (I was hoping it wouldn’t; it usually doesn’t set it up itself and instead, relies on other teammates [Ninjask]).

This next turn is the moment of truth. Victreebel will Solarbeam and I have Flygon Outrage (Boo, Fire Blast has missed in critical times before). The victory depends entirely on Flygon surviving and killing with Outrage (because a sleeping penguin that takes neutral from Solarbeam is useless now in my book).

Lummox wins!

Flygon survives with just 2% left and plows down the carnivorous flower in a rage. Good Game Opponent! If you see this, let me know if you want to be in it. XD

We have some post-battle small talk.

Lummox: gg
Opponent: Almost had the victreebel sweep
Opponent: Stupid 2%

Opponent: Victreebel rocks
Opponent: It has Victory right in the name!
Lummox: XP Good game again

Props:
-Rhyperior, for taking out 4 of Opponent's team.
-Hippowdon, for being annoying at the beginning and taking out that Steelix
-Flygon, for surviving Solarbeam at 2%

Slops:
-Gliscor, for being dog food.
-Hippowdon, for being decimated by Solarbeam.
-Rhyperior, for being annihilated by Solarbeam.
-Magnezone, for being worn down by Solarbeam.
-Empoleon, for just being sleep fodder.
-Intermittent hax on both sides that could have changed the outcome.
-Flygon, for failing to fall to Solarbeam like it should have. :(

Overall, I didn't think it was a terrible story, but I know it is not the best and my mistakes disgust even me. I guess I decided to warstory this because I felt this was a battle that taught me the most and improved my integrating into the metagame. The other battles I've had were either Empoleon and Rhyperior sweeping with Gliscor's help, or opponents leaving when they begin their sweeps.

(It looked like I had a lot more commentary when it was Word and while I was typing it up. >_> I felt that that was what best told what I was thinking, though)

Thanks for reading (I assume) and maybe you'll start seeing me around Smogon!

The predictions were poor, and there was hax in critical situations. If you want to see the standards of a warstory, read one in the Archives, and choose a better battle next time. And add some better commentary. We want to know what it was like for you, but you just summarized the previous turn.

It did seem like there were a lot of slops, especially getting Solarbeamed repeatedly, and you won the battle with luck more than skill, particularly with Flygon surviving the Solarbeam and the missed Will-o-Wisp. Still, keep battling, read the stories in the Archive, and maybe give it another go later.

You should probably take what I say with a grain of salt, for I'm not very good!:jump:

Alright, thanks for the advice guys. I'm pretty sure I've read 50% of what's in the Warstory archive. XD I guess this is a good learning experience. >_>

A mod may lock this now.

To be fair, it was the battle that was a bit lackluster, not your comments. It was far too short and quite one sided. I'm sure if you wrote up a really good battle and expanded your comments to include more of your planning and reactions, it would make for a good warstory.

I enjoyed the warstory, the predictions weren't perfect, but they were definately not horrible. Nice warstory =] Nice Rhyperior sweep too, I was surprised how weak its attacks were at times (like on Ninjask), but still, it was a fun spectacle to see.
