Alakazam

Damn. DW Abra doesn't get Counter. I would have liked to keep my Sash intact in the face of hazards and status, but whatever.

The possibilities of MG Alakazam are so good I don't think Counter even needs to be anywhere near it. I've been playing on the beta server with a max speed max hp Zam with CM and Recover. Super fast, specially bulky but physically frail, it is ripping UU to shreds.

TBH i dont think CM+recover is viable on alakazam, especially cause eviolite duosion can do the same thing, but with better bulk

They are completely different Pokemon. Duosion is slow and depends on bulk to tank hits before retaliating. Alakazam is blazing fast and hits hard right off the bat. Alakazam can come in and kill something before it moves. CM and Recover are nice extras that allow it become unstoppable if a bulky wall switches in to tank a Psychic. Alakazam is leagues ahead of Duosion in terms of viability.

maybe they serve different purposes as you said, but why not run a cm+3attacks set i personally dont see whe alakazam will have a chance to use recover IMO.

OP updated. Magic Guard getting released is awesome!

Does anyone want to post the Guard Split set that was mentioned?
Alakazam @ Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
Nature: Naive
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Def / 0 SpD
-Guard Split
-Focus Blast
-Recover / Shadow Ball
-Psychic / Psyshock / Shadow Ball

Guard Split and Focus Blast are essential to this set. Naive nature lowers Special Defence and that along with no IVs increase the amount of defence gained. In the last slot, you can either go with a STAB or Shadow Ball (which is used for coverage). If you're really picky, you could replace Recover with Shadow Ball if you decide to go with STAB in the last slot but you lose out on healing. As for the item, you could use Leftovers to stay alive a bit longer or use but Life Orb without its recoil is quite tempting to deal more damage. Entry hazard support is mandatory for this set.

You could also use Hidden Power (Fighting) over Focus Blast but I'm too lazy to look up the IVs required. Oh jeez, with Spooky Manor released, I have to retrain an in-game Alakazam all over again.

Even despite it's weak defensive stat, it's still not hard to get Alakazam into annonthreatening Special Attacker and pick up a Calm Mind or two. Even with a single boost LO Psyshock and Focus Blast will blow holes into a stall team.

Should I mention my Guard Split set on the analysis? If so, which one? I fear if I recklessly do so, I'll get a fraction.

I also did the calculations, after taking a Guard Split, Ferrothorn takes minimum 75% from Life Orb Alakazam's Focus Blast. If you have a better example, please mention it.

Assuming that I did the calcs correctly (as I'm not entirely sure about the mechanics of Guard Split in conjunction with Eviolite), with your given set Alakazam's LO-boosted Focus Blast is dealing 59.7-70.6% to a 124 Hp/136 SDef Munchlax w/Eviolite, whereas it would otherwise be doing 47.1-55.7%. Not a huge difference, but it does guarantee the 2HKO.

Edit: Has anybody thought of trying a Sub-Disable set? It was proven to be quite irritating on the likes of Gengar in OU with TSpikes support, and although it misses on Ghost typing it does have the bonus of Recover and Magic Guard.

Alakazam just isn't the same as SubDisable Gengar. The main reason SubDiasable worked it because of Gengar's 3 great immunities, while Alakazam has 0, reducing the number of attacks it can easily come in on. Not saying it will never work, it just won't work exactly the same way.

Without sash magic guard is crap. Alakazam dies from pretty much an attack sooo... Fuck residual damage. The only status he fears is t-wave which is sort of solved by synchronize which can also be used to toxic a wall like cress (switching in)

so what's the best Alakazam counter in RU? Beside Munchlax, I don't think anyone else can take his attacks. Sableye is immune to psychic and focus blast but boosted shadow ball still do a lot.

Edit: I just thought about specially defensive Mandibuzz. I need to try it out :)

actually i would say sableye is the best zam counter, shadow ball doesn't 2hko a speacially defensive spread, mandibuzz as you said also works out.

Scarf Primeape is by no means a counter, but he is a great check to Alakazam, able to fire off U-Turns to gain momentum and kill Alakazam without fail. Murkrow, although he's fallen off the face of the earth, counters Zam too, although I have beaten a few Murkrows through prediction with my Zam.

How exactly is a pokemon weak to another pokemon's main STAB and unresistant to its coverage moves AND with lame defense of the type it chooses to use to attack a good check to it?

Comes in after a death, outspeeds with Scarf, and either kills, or at the very least, forces Alakazam out and builds momentum with U-turn.
