Anyone here in or interested in joining the military?

Well, the US still has the best military in the world despite what anyone (read: anyone British) says about it.

I'm not cut out for the military but lately I've been noticing a significant amount of my friends are showing increased interest in the military, and a good number are enlisting. Most are joining the Marines, one is going to be a Seal, and I only have one friend in the military already, who is a Captain in the Air Force, flies a B2 and is stationed in Afghanistan. God speed to them

Anyone find it weird that lawyers make more money than the guys who fly our invaluable 2 billion dollar aircraft?

You mean the guys that argue senselessly over petty issues make more money than the people who risk their lives every day? Yeah that seems strange to me too

i was just differentiating the two in my own obnoxious way because the US Marines and Royal Marines are really nothing alike in their overall function in their respective militarys. I imagine 'marine' would have very different connotations between our cultures. To you, they're your basic troops who train for 13 weeks. To us, they're the absolute best troops available outside of the Special Forces and undergo the longest infantry training program in the world at 32 weeks.

they're only the same in name, not in status. hence the comment...i mean no disrespect by it...i would never disrespect any serving soldiers (partially because i'd likely get my arse kicked :P)

so yeah, next April eh? That's a ridiculously long time. presumably that was your choice because I'm sure they have intakes before that (they are one of the biggest military corps in the world, right?). why you waiting? take it from me - if you wanna do it don't delay because any amount of shit can crop up between now and next April that's gonna fuck everything up for you.
They only allow a certain amount of recruits per month. When you enlist, you get into the DEP wich stands for delayed entry program. I didnt have a choice as to when I go to basic, its the soonest available time for me to get accepted. I wouldn't call them the basic troops either, they have the longest and hardest boot camp out of all other us military branches. No offense taken btw. I bash on other branches for fun sometimes too, haha.

edit: there is no one best or most elite force in the US, since there is more than one in each branch.

My half-brother-in-law used to be in the US Army while his kid was still an infant, he went to Iraq and came back a good father lol

Don't care to get much closer to the military than that though

I would be quite interested in some of the consulty positions, rather than being in the military specifically. Signals Analysis, tech engineering, logistics analysis and that sort of thing.

Instead I'm a lawyer.

I don't think that's correct. The US Marines are an elite division, not the basic infantry. They're often put into positions of supervision over the general infantry troops and the like.

well you're obviously more willing to bestow elite status than we are if you think somebody (note: even a woman) can go from civilian to elite soldier in a mere 12-13 weeks but i don't really wanna get into this argument since it's ultimately gonna boil down to semantics anyway and it has been argued to death all over the internet. there's a good little discussion on the subject here featuring opinions from serving Marines, veterans, historians and all that jazz.

aaaaanyway, with that hopefully behind us.

I see...am I right in assuming they'll have given you some kind of fitness program to crack on with in the meanwhile? I also assume you'll need to pass the initial fitness tests closer to the time. how are you feeling about them?

The Initial Strength Test (IST) for Recruits

If you are thinking about joining the USMC, you will have to pass the IST (Initial Strength Test). The IST is a shortened version of the USMC PFT. A recruit only has to do pull-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run. The minimum standards for passing the Initial Strength Test are as follows:

Male

- 2 Pull Ups
- 35 Sit Ups (2 minutes)
- 1.5 Mile Run - 13:30

So yeah, looks easy but from experience I can tell you that 'minimum' means fuck all. I've seen countless lads ace the minimum requirements and still get sent home. Honestly you should be aiming for about 6 pull-ups, 80 sit-ups and the 1.5 mile in sub-11.

I'm also looking at the weight requirements and they seem quite strict! do you meet them? it seems as though you're okay as long as your BMI is between 20 and 26.

apparently not done yet

To be fair I did think this over before hand, but your post is hilarious none the less.

Actually, my family had an old friend stop by who used to be in the Air Force. Apparently they are pretty strict as his "Hell Week" was classified and he was sworn to secrecy. This is interesting as the Marine BUD/S program is an open book. For fun I googled it and got the following details of recommended fitness to considered fit to take SEAL training.

- 500 yds swim - under 9:00
- Pushups - 100 in 2:00
- Situps - 100 in 2:00
- Pullups - 20+
- 1.5 mile run - under 9:00 in boots and pants
