I need help with a few members of my team's moves. Please don't suggest Hidden Power [type] because they don't have good Hidden Power.

I'd change nature to something like Mild or Rash because of Explosion. For final move, I'd go with Substitute, but if you stick with Modest, change Explosion to Thunder Wave.

Ice Punch for Dusknoir, you already have two other Electric attacks.

For Magmortar, Earthquake, which you lack, or possibly Psychic.

Thanks. And I have Earthquake on my Gliscor, so no worries.
 
What do you think a mixed attacking Infernape holding a Focus Sash should outspeed in the battle tower? I was thinking of giving this EV spread:
138 Atk/140 SpA/232 Spd
 
Ok, the last pokemon game I played before Pearl was Yellow - and now I just beat the elite four/got my national dex and am looking to get into the competitive pokemon scene.

I've been totally overwhelmed by everything that's changed and am slowly learning EVs/IVs/all that fun stuff by poking around this forum. So I'm asking: anyone got good advice or suggestions to help ease in a newb into this harsh, harsh pokemon world? =)
 
Read the analysis, and the many warstories in the sub-forum. After being accustomed to how d/p works, i would suggest building a team on shoddy battle, and start battling. Reading and battling are the best ways to learn how to play.

Crud!!! A total noob! No offense meant, but this will probably be the hardest thing you've ever done in one sitting.

First thing, Natures. I think of them as gates for a Pokemon's potential. If it's a positive nature, then the "gate" is 1.1 times longer, and so is that Pokemon's stat. If it's neutral, then the gate is average, and if it's hindering, then it's .9 times the neutral stat.

Second, start with IV's and learning for those. Gradually learn how to competitively breed with better parents, and get the feel for perfect IV's and such. I'm assuming you know about characteristics (Alert to Sounds, Mischievious, etc.), so I won't go into those. The perfect IV is a 31, and each point in an IV stat is one point on the Pokemon's stat. These won't be obvious at Lv. 1, so you'll have to use the Rare Candy-Shut Off trick to get a rough idea of one Pokemon's IV's.

After that, start working on EV training in your game, and then get your EV trained Pokes over Lv. 50. After that, try the Battle Tower, and try to beat it regularly, and determine whether you want Double or Single Battles. If you think that those are easy, then try the WiFi Battle Rooms in the Battle Tower.

If you manage to beat a few rounds of that, then awesome! You're pretty much prepared for competitive battling here on Smogon!

How does Mewtwo learn selfdestruct? Selfdestruct was listed in a Mewtwo moveset for double battle strategies, but it isn't listed on Serebii's page for Mewtwo.
 
I've got a question, I just caught Heatran and it'a IV"S aen't the greatest. But, that Heatran was a pain in the ass to catch. Should I try for a better one...or just keep this one...?

What are it's IVs? The most important are speed and special attack, defenses secondary if you plan on using it to take hits
 
My Gyarados has a Naughty nature and 255 Speed EVs. Let's assume the enemy's Starmie is Timid with 255 Speed EVs as well.

How many DDs does it take to outspeed that thing, with and without Choice Scarf?
 
Is Shaymin available in the game without an event? I'm talking to my friend and he said he just found it chillin in a big field while running around the game.
