I believe there's a 2-tick leeway, but that's the hard way. The easy way involves paying attention to the WLAN light on your router and when it blinks, but I'm not exactly sure how that goes. Search for the thread that talks all about it. (I would, but I'm almost ready for bed...)
As to what to ask for, search in the GTS for something that you think no one else would have. When you find some set of criteria that no Pokemon has, offer that in exchange for what you're trading. That should help reduce the risk of losing your Pokemon.

Oh, and make sure you deposit. If you try this while taking back a Pokemon, I'm certain that there's a chance that you'll actually lose the Pokemon altogether, though that's mere speculation. I've heard people have lost their Pokemon, however, so I wouldn't try that, anyway.

I would just get an AR to do so, its completely safer and I remember you wanting one. If you don't want to buy one, you can ask for a cloner (such as Gin or myself or aznboi, etc)

Does AR cloning somehow leave a mark on the pokemon?
No, the pokemon is exactly the same. Nothing about the pokemon is changed.
Oh ok, meenwhile I'm just randomly shutting off my DS while it uploads pokemon on GTS...I hope it doesn't take much longer for it to clone.

How many good pokemon should I have before opening a trading thread?
Depends on how good they are. If you've got a Timid untouched shiny Ghastly with all 31s, that makes it's own thread. Any shinies make their own threads if they're good, really. Anyway, I say you have at least 5, if they are good.

Nope, they're just exact. If you got a Pokemon up to, say, level 20 or so, you could get approximates.
Although if you are breeding for hidden power, you must have level 100 stats right?

Not necessarily. Go to http://www.metalkid.info Go to the IV calculator page. Enter in all the info, and the stats. Then use a Rare Candy. Put in the stats on the next line. Repeat over and over until you get the stats narrowed down enough.
