Ask a Simple Question, Get a Simple Answer: Monotype Edition

:Decidueye: -> :Corsola-Galar:
Ghostly Coral (Corsola-Galar) @ Eviolite
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Night Shade
- Stealth Rock
- Strength Sap
- Will-O-Wisp
This is the only major change but it’s important. Corsola not only allows you access to hazards but also another way to cripple and wear down your opponents for late game sweeps from Dragapult, Polteageist or Gengar. Decidueye, covering Water and Ground MUs isn’t missed because Ground typically struggles to KO Corsola and Water has a hard time dealing with Dragapult after one Dragon Dance.

Here is the final updated team:https://pokepast.es/0a1ee93ec02a4d41
Give it a try and let me know how it works!
It works nicely, thanks! However, I have just one question: Why Will-O-Wisp over Icy Wind? With IW, you lower Speed, possibly making it easier for Polteageist to come in w/ Shell Smash, as before it, it has a middling 70 base. Also, Ghost doesn't need burns, because the biggest threat to them, Dark-types, are most likely special attackers that don't mind the 1/2 loss of physical attack

Just a few questions.
[/QUOTE]

Wisp helps cripple and chip ANY opposition. And realistically the only common special attackers on Dark are Moltres-G and Hydreigon. Everything else is physical

will-o cripples phys attackers that try to take on you. Stuff like Burning Krookodile, Landorus, Excadrill, Urshifu-Rapid, goes a very long way since Ghosts are pretty frail as a whole.
Also, Will-o reduces the potency of Knock Off (the most common Dark coverage people run on Zeraora, Rillaboom, Landorus), so its nice like that. It also stops the other team's Mimikyu/Aegis from setting up on Corsola, then sweeping later with shadow sneak.

When playing in Monotype Random, I encountered a Hatterene with near min speed (55) and trick room.
I realize this is done to assist it in trick room.
However, it 'outsped' my Torkal which has very low speed, but was maxed out to 84.
Why shouldn't every low speed mon be given this attention (min speed)?
To make matters worse, executor (which can learn trick room) had max speed.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by that.

Because Trick Room is quite rare. Which means that it is more likely to be useful to have max speed as a slow mon in order to outspeed other slow mons than to have min speed for the off chance you encounter an opponent with Trick Room.

Hi! I just picked up Brilliant Diamond and am trying to make a mono-steel team since I want to become the Steven of my friend group. Any suggestions on how to go about doing that in BD/SP? I know practically nothing about competitve pokemon (this is my first mainline game since the ORIGINAL Diamond/Pearl), but have some general ideas after doing some reading. The team I was looking at was something like:

Metagross to deal with fighting/fairy types. Moves like Zen Headbutt, Meteor Mash, and Earthquake for coverage.

Skarmory to fight off grounds and anyone without electric/fire moves. Set up Spikes and have stuff like Brave Bird and Roost? Whirlwind?

Heatran seems great against fire types and load him up with stuff like Overheat, Earth Power, and Flash Cannon? Or is Emporeon a solid choice too?

Steelix counters electric types that threaten Skarmory, can set up Stealth Rocks, use Payback and then blow himself up (also just my favorite pokemon)?

Scizor for Bullet Punch, probably? And the Lucario to try and sweep up anything left with Swords Dance?

Those are just the ideas from some quick Googling, so there's probably tons of room for improvement. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to Monotype!

Now, on your team:

Metagross is a decent option for a team, but Skarmory can tank a Close Combat from full HP and KO with Brave Bird, so unless you really want it, I'd say use ParaFlinch Jirachi or a Rock-type to have another counter to Fire (say, Life Orb/Choice Band Aggron with Head Smash or Trick Room Stakataka).

Empoleon has a decent niche as a Defiant user, but Heatran is basically Steel's only special attacker, and Bisharp performs Defiant better with STAB Sucker Punch. I'd say use Heatran.

Steelix: Honestly, I wouldn't advise you use Steelix, but since it's your favorite Pokemon, use a set with Curse. I'll leave a Pokepaste below. If you're fine with removing it, use Sucker Punch Bisharp.

My QOTD (Question of the Day):

I am making a Trick Room Ice-type mono. Do you guys think it's viable? Some matches have yielded, uh, mixed results...

Now, now, don't laugh. In my eyes, it seems perfect, what with the bulky beasts with the Ice typing.

The team:

Mr. Rime @ Focus Sash: Trick Room setter & special attacker (STAB Blizzard & Psychic)
Glastrier @ Heavy-Duty Boots: TR Beast #1: Physical Swords Dance w/ unlimited switch-ins due to HDB's and STAB Icicle Crash, High Horsepower, and Megahorn (yikes, that's a lot of damage)
Abomasnow @ Life Orb: TR Beast #2: STAB Giga Drain and Blizzard? Yes, please! Also, spare Aurora Veil setter.
Piloswine @ Eviolite: Bulky SR setter, Curse setupper (?) and STAB Earthquake spammer (also, Fire resister)
Ninetales-Alola @ Light Clay: Main AV setter, STAB Blizzard and Moonblast user, and Nasty Plot settupper (??)
Darmanitan-Galar @ Salac Berry: Belly Drum/Zen Mode/Salac Berry demon

So: Viable or not? Any improvements?

Here are my own suggestions as a veteran steel player. First, the above post does not take into account that jirachi lost iron head in BDSP. As such, I prefer to use jirachi with specs, max spd and spa, modest, with Thunder, energy ball, dazzling gleam, and psychic.

In addition, the above user forgot that bisharp and stakataka are not in BDSP. As such, empoleon and lucario would be great additions to steel. Personally, I would run specs lucario, but since jirachi is already specs, you can special scarf set. In addition, because of a lack aegislash, run spdef tran and assault vest empoleon. That will help you deal with fire a lot better. I think for the sets you can use, you can start with the one posted on smogon. Change according to your liking. Empoleon aqua jet and scizor bullet punch would be enough for priority(yes run physical empoleon). Hope this helps.

Sorry, I was under the assumption that we were talking about SS, not BDSP. :(

Could it be coded that the first pkmn in monotype random battles is always either dual type or single type for both players?
I noticed that often one player will get a single type mon as their starter, which gives away their teams monotype.

True, but the other player still can usually guess their opponent's monotype. Say:

I lead with a Crawdaunt.
You lead with a Regieleki.

I'd probably be in a bad spot here if I wasn't going to switch out, so if I switch into a Krookodile, say, then you'd know that my monotype is Dark.

On Iron Defense + Body Press sets for Magnezone, is Discharge necessary on it?
Yes I think. Its usually ID+Sub+Press+Discharge/Tbolt....with balloon sometimes to screw excadrill. Discharge/Tbolt needed because sometimes trapping steela might come clutch.

Are there any strategy dex entries that mention both of a Pokemon's dual types? I only ever see them mentioned for one type (like example, Orbeetle mentions its strategy for Psychic, but not Bug). Is it just that most pokemon are only good on one type?

There certainly are! You just have to look for actually good pokemon. For instance, Toxapex https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/toxapex/monotype/
This doesn't seem like a fair characterization of the problem. I mean, I look for analyses of actually good pokemon and frequently get no monotype analysis, viz:

https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/zapdos/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/garchomp/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/tapu-fini/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/moltres-galar/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/slowbro/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/slowking/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/latios/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/thundurus-therian/
https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/volcanion/

The truth is that it takes a lot of time and work to write analyses, so a lot of analyses that should be written aren't because people don't have the time. If you want to write up an analysis for Orbeetle on Bug, go for it! We could always use more public analyses to help develop the metagame.

How do you write up analyses for monotype? Is there like somewhere to go or do I just write it?

you first reserve a set or mon here. Then, when it gets approved, you post the analyses on the forum there. There's a format though which is found here.

The process goes like WIP-> Quality Control->Grammar prose. WIP is when ur currently writing it. When ur done, Quality Control people check it for accuracy and consistency. You need 2 QC people to look over and approve of your analyses. Then Grammar prose checks the grammar, and you also need 2 GP checks for it to be called done (and be uploaded on the strategy dex)

Thanks. Also, how do you add the thing with the suspect tests, analyses, and spotlights?

Finally, what forum do I post it on?

what is the most overrated type in monotype?
Water and Steel Imo.

Rain water is devastating, but when you think about it, most (not weak) types either 1.)Pack a water immunity (Toxicroak for Fighting, Mantine for Flying) 2.)Pack a thic resist mon (Ferrothorn for Steel, Tapu Bulu for Fairy, Kyurem for Ice/Dragon) 3.) Pack a fastish mon (Zarude for Dark), so it isnt really quite overwhelming as the tin says. However, considering only a few types resist water, it could be problematic when you don't have those mons tho. Non-Rain Water is a diff thing entirely and is good in itself (Volcanion ;w;) tho.

Steel is the most complained about type, but its actually very hard to play. Most types pack a steelbreaker (eg. Nidoking, Hydreigon, Tapu Bulu, Galarian Moltres), and Steel has a tendency to fall apart once their Defensive core is weakened (unlike Poison, which has regen) because Scarf Excadrill is slow in terms of scarf and Priority spam needs a free turn to be scary. However, if the steel breaker dies and the defensive core is intact, well....rip :)

Fishsticks, I'm confused on the Keldeo analysis: They rejected it, so now what do I do? I made some improvements and edited it.

My discord is HE-MANDAR#6627 (for now) and we (or someone else) can work on the analysis. I feel like you have to understand the general metagame to a certain level, especially when writing something niche like Keldeo Fighting. The viability rankings is an ok guide to go off of when referencing teammates although every Pokemon on the VR isn't required because each Pokemon has different teambuilding structures (like Kingdra Water vs Cloyster Water. One is on Rain and one isn't). After we discuss the typing we can let you proceed with QC.

I don't think Water and Steel are overrated, I think an "overrated" type is something like Electric. Choice Specs Zapdos sparked up as probably a bannable threat in the tier during MPL and then the metagame adjusted to use Galarian Slowking (on Psychic and Poison), Cradily, and etc. Water and Steel are pretty customizable and I think the structure can always adjust and always be relevant in the metagame.
