BATTLE SPOT SINGLES OPEN

Specific Rules
  • This is a standard USUM Battle Spot Singles Tournament.
  • The tournament will be Best of Three, Single Elimination. Starting at Top 6, the sets will become a Best of Five.
  • Players may change their teams during the set.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown/SmogTours
  • Replays must be saved and POSTED. Matches without a replay will not count as completed. If you don't want to risk forgetting to save replays play on Smogtours as it's automatic there.
  • In an event of a timeout, the player who times out will lose that game unless the opponent grants a rematch. This holds true even for a disconnect, due to being unable to know which three Pokemon have been selected at team preview. Consequently, players do not need to send in their teams to a TD.
  • Activity calls and coinflips will be done by myself and the pick command on Pokemon Showdown respectively.
Standard Rules
  • Matches will be played in the Singles format
  • Pokemon above level 50 will be brought down to level 50. Pokemon below level 50 stay as is.
  • Players pick 3 of their 6 Pokemon at team preview.
  • 3DS-born Clause: A Pokemon cannot have a set that can only be obtained from before gen 6. (i.e. no past-gen exclusive move tutors/TMs/events)
  • Species Clause: No two Pokemon in the same team can have the same National Pokedex number.
  • Item Clause: No two Pokemon in the same team can hold the same item.

Last Life Bracket: This bracket is for people who lost in the main bracket to have an extra chance to win more circuit points (CP). Players in the last life bracket can no longer win the tournament, but can earn 1CP per round win (winning in the main bracket earns 2CP). As such, players who are only interested in winning the tournament and don't care about CP can drop out if they wish to do so. Players who no longer have an opponent but wants to play or needs an extension need to notify me immediately so that they can get a new matchup/get an extension, as incomplete games will count as a double game loss. Players who lose in the last life bracket will be out of this tournament.

Simulator Glitches: Any battle mechanics not properly implemented in the simulator used for a tournament battle are fair game, unless explicitly banned by that tournament's rules. Illegal movesets that are not restricted by the simulator fall into this category as well. However, this does not include faulty tier scripts; for example, if there was a bug in the BW OU tier script that allowed you to use Drizzle and Swift Swim on the same team, taking advantage of this would result in disqualification in that battle. If a game breaking glitch is discovered, we will make a blanket tournament ban on that glitch via an announcement in the Tournaments forum until it is fixed.

Ghosting: The player in a tournament battle should be the one making their own decisions. Do not tell a player what move to make in a tournament battle (i.e. do not "ghost" them), and do not make your moves based on another person's suggestions. If we are made aware that someone playing a tournament battle is making some of their moves based mainly on the suggestions of someone else, punishments may be handed out to both parties involved.

Identity: Pretending to be another player in relation to a tournament battle is strictly prohibited. Do not try to impersonate or play as another player. This applies to the use of alts as well. Any player who breaks this will be disqualified and may be subject to further punishment.

Rule Breaking: If a player breaks a rule during a battle, they are disqualified from that particular battle. If it was a single battle in a series, they will still have the opportunity to play the rest of the series.

Draws: If a battle ends in a draw in an elimination tournament or another tournament format that is unable to handle draws, there should be a rematch between the players with the option for both players to change teams.

Forfeiting: A player may forfeit their battle during or after the battle, as long as the result has not been confirmed by the host. If a player forfeits before a battle commences in the first round of a tournament, they are eligible for substitution if appropriate. We highly recommend that you do not forfeit your tournament battles just because you got lucky, but we do not enforce this.

Host / Tournament Director Decisions: The host may make a judgment call on the outcome of a battle with a disputed result, even if one player has broken the rules. If you believe the host has made an unjust decision, you may inform the Tournament Director responsible for the tournament of the situation and request that they make a final call on it.

Sportsmanship: If a player displays exceedingly poor sportsmanship before, during, or after a tournament battle, they may be disqualified or otherwise punished.

This round ends February 11, 11:59PM EST

Our goal is to play Saturday, I got a busy week and figured I'd prep to some degree before I get upset by chemcoop.

I'll update w/ the time when Chem gets back to me with a more specific time to play

P.S. fwiw I was rather displeased with the amount of trash-talk (regardless of whether they meant it or not) that 1_TP said in the couple of weeks leading up to the match. As a community, we pride ourselves on being one of the nicest and most welcoming on Smogon and behavior like that doesn't really live up to our reputation.

GGs mate, I know I don't really know you but I figured as a top player and with me being a relative nobody you'd understand I was doing my "smack talk" tongue and cheek. I was a heavy underdog for this as I'm sure you were aware so I was just trying to have fun with it. This was a really fun set that definitely pushed me to the limit, I was one more double switch away from a victory.

I'll hope to get you next time, and I'm sure that this intense set will be one of many we have in our future!

Making it to finals in the first BSS ssnl I entered is a pretty great feeling : D this format is a breath of fresh air and I'm glad the mishi society finally convinced me to give it a try!!! New matchup: leo05051998 vs byronthewellwell

I know its super late so your deadline is Thursday.

As for why we are doing last life bracket instead of regular double elimination (where even if you lose once you have a chance to win), it is because double elimination takes too long and having winners play once every two weeks tends to see waning interest for the tour from the community.

However single elimination on its own skews circuit points rewards which has a side effect of determining circuit playoff qualifiers early and potentially see lower interest in later circuit tournaments (a trend that happened in the last two years). Having the last life bracket award CP evens the CP distribution to a certain extent, which in turn keeps the qualification race closer than before.

It also has the added benefit of giving players more opportunities to play tournament games if they are eliminated early. Playing only once every two months because you lose r1 can be demoralizing. Having more opportunities to play is definitely a good thing.

Either way the last life bracket system is a completely new system and is open to suggestions. From my perspective, a lot more matches were completed than I initially expected, considering they're not mandatory to complete and only affect you if you're interested in the circuit, which is obviously a good thing. However, there may be some downsides I'm missing so please share your concerns if you have any.

I did not play it personally but I think there's nothing wrong with it as a concept. I'd prefer more tournaments personally but it's a reasonable midground in my opinion.

i'm personally fine with it, the opportunity to get circuit points is valuable if you want to win despite getting washed out early in a tour, or as I have demonstrated, an opportunity to have funsies in the event you don't.

So Im kinda at a point now where I just got out, dont really have the motivation to play in this last life bracket, but really need to in order to maximize my points and stay competitive for make the invitational (especial with my bye round screwing me on points). Feeling forced to do it when out is definitely something that I'm sure other people aren't thrilled about.

Additionally, I think the idea was good but the implementation isn't great as it stands. What happens after next week for that bracket? The matches will be done but still a handful of people will still be in the last life bracket with no conclusion. Whats the point then aside from just doing matches for matches sake? Things to be tweaked out for sure, but I appreciate the experiment.

1. Bye rounds still net you points if you win the next round. Nothing screwed you over.
2. Nobody is forcing you to play games :pikuh:
3. Last Life bracket was never meant to conclude. From the beginning it was only meant to give players another opportunity to gain CP. If it was only to play for the sake of playing there wouldn't be a CP reward...

1. Lol I was misinformed by bobo then haha

2. I agree that no one is forcing me, but with points on the line I'm gonna do it, making it feel forced. Thats just the way I feel, hope that is understandable?

3. Maybe instead of last life where it seems like you can only gain from entering, perhaps have a gambling "last life" bracket, where people who are out can agree to wager a point. This way its not a full net positive from continuing to play unless you win. Also makes it kinda spicy!
