With a bit of delay, signups for the Toymaker event are now closed!
In its place... a Raid battle against a slumbering foe!
Note: signups for this event will be open until March 11th, which will make it overlap with the March event

Ecosystem-Ending Threat! (2025)

Recent numerous Trainer adventures into an old abandoned mineshaft led to the local wildlife population declining and the mineshaft itself being seized again by the local ore exploitation companies, who got it back into shape to extract precious ore from the still-rich veins of the cavern. However, when miners went down to the lower layers, they reported rumbles and what seemed like green pulsating streaks of an unidentified material running along the stone.
Dismissing those reports as fantasy rumors, management ordered the shaft to be extended deeper yet, to reach potential new veins of ore. However, the "rumors" proved true when a strange creature started showing up and attacking workers and materials alike, forcing a hasty retreat out of the cave.
Now the rumbles have turned into angry roars, and the creature is regularly seen out of the mines destroying whatever it can that looks like mining equipment. The rare miners who have still ventured into the mines report that the green streaks also seem to be pulsating... faster? Someone needs to eliminate that threat, for the good of the comp- I mean the poor workers!

Base Facility: The Battle Pike

Format Changes:
Starting from default Battle Pike rules, this Event has following changes:
  • This Event is Level 3. However, the provided Rental Pokemon are higher.
  • This Event costs each player 10 JC to enter.
  • Pokemon do not have P.Powers, or P.XP, and players do not earn PC.
    • (You may then wonder, "why is this Event in the Pike?" Great question.)
    • Player Pokemon and Rental Pokemon are locked to P.Level 0, and have normal HP and Energy. Don't bother tracking their P.Level.
    • Opponent Pokemon have negative P.Level that worsens their parameters. Earlier opponents have further-negative P.Levels than later opponents.
  • The first Mega Evolution performed by each Rental Pokemon costs no Technique Control.
  • This Event has a Backpack size of three (3) items per player from signup.
  • Species Clause does not consider Rental Pokemon provided by the event.
  • This Event is a series of three consecutive Xv2 battles.
  • This Event is only one step per round.
  • Attrition between battles consists of lost HP, Energy, suffered Major Conditions, Technique Control and spent Trainer items.
    • As Rental Pokemon are not retained between battles, they are critical to progressing smoothly.
    • The attrition of victorious player teams is saved in their challenge thread, and may be imported into the subsequent event "All You Hold Dear" to earn bonus rewards.
Two players will challenge the Event as a team:
  • Unlike most team battles, both trainers will share a Reserve, a Bench, and a Backpack.
  • Either trainer may send out any Pokemon from these shared zones.
  • Players do share a backpack in this Event.
    • When signing up, both players will contribute up three items each, to their team's Backpack.
We're trying hours in Events, starting with this event.
  • Teams have 96 round hours for the round.
    • This means your partner can eat up a bunch of your round hours.
  • Players and referees have 240 battle hours (10 days' worth) for the entire event.
    • This is a lot of battle hours.
    • If one player has posted and the other exhausts their team's round hours, only the tardy player begins using battle hours.
    • If one player on a team runs out of battle hours, they become Delinquent. See 12.5 "Hours and Delinquency".
The Event provides a Rental Pokemon for each wave that join players' Pokemon in battle:
  • Each battle's specified Guest Pokemon is included in the player team for that battle, and leaves after.
    • Each Guest Pokemon comes pre-equipped with a designated item in advance. Guest items are immutable.
  • Players control Guest Pokemon and may send them out, withdraw them, and so on.
  • After each battle, the Guest Pokemon return their items to the players' backpacks
This Event will use snake posting order. (See 2.3b "Post Schedule of Later Rounds").
In the first round:
  1. The players will collaborate to select combinations for their Guest Pokemon, filling their Combo Slots.
  2. The referee will send out and equip both NPC Pokemon.
  3. One player will send and equip.
  4. The other player will send, equip, and order.
  5. The referee will order with both NPC Pokemon.
  6. The first-sending player will order.

Battle and Story Information
Note: You can feel free to paste the story text to an empty post and preview it, if you'd like to read ahead.

I've tried to format the story with code tags and inline spoilers, so that readers can only ever spoil themselves on purpose.

You will play as yourselves, so don't worry about canon. Select any stable Pokemon that can play Doubles alongside grounded Steel-types.

The metropolis of Arkland is one of soaring skyscrapers and deafening traffic. The bustling business district pulses with activity like the heart of a great creature, the cargo and people making the tide of its lifeblood as they each hurtle to their respective destinations. It is in this city where you arrive by bus at a designated meeting place.

You were contacted by your IM address registered with the BBP League to commute here quickly and quietly. When you finally disembark from the rather crowded and noisy vehicle, it's in a fairly high-scale courtyard in the most expensive area of town. All around you, fake marble walkways and gleaming glass towers present a facade of spotless opulence. As your bus pulls away, a lone figure is revealed and approaching you briskly.

Artemis%20Event.png

"Took you two long enough."

***

Your point of contact is named Artemis, who called upon you after looking up your recent League record. When you ask why she picked you for this, she clarifies, "I needed trainers with records of strong performance, but no sponsors or corporate backers. Those two groups mostly overlap, so you're probably the best I'll be able to find." Some vote of confidence. You learn that she's trying to find an associate of hers in the area, and you get the impression that this colleague was on the verge of doing something rash.

"We'll be heading to this address here." Artemis flashes her phone screen, which has a set of map directions pulled up. She sets off at a brisk walk that's difficult to match without jogging at times. As you walk, she elaborates. "Our destination is the Acumen building. They're a company that makes Pokemon training and grooming aids. My colleague was looking in to them and what they make, but wouldn't tell me why. I suspect we'll find her there."To you, all of the skyscrapers blend together, but Artemis weaves deftly through the other pedestrians, barely seeming to notice them. You try ask her to slow down, but your plea is lost in the noise of the city.

Eventually, you follow her to a tall and pristine white building's approach garden, winded and flushed.

***

Acumen%20F.png

Artemis is already speaking with an employee stationed at the entrance, and showing them her phone screen. As you approach, she acknowledges you with only a nod before continuing. "We think she may have been last seen here," she says. "Any information you may have regarding her whereabouts would be helpful."

The employee responds with a perfect, practiced smile. "I'm so sorry. I understand how awful it must feel to misplace a child!" "Colleague," Artemis corrects her, but the attendant prattles on unfazed. "Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to discuss the comings or goings of any Acumen personnel or guests for security reasons. She does look like a sweetie, if I may, and I wish you luck with your search. Was there anything else I can help you with?" The Acumen employee simply beams at Artemis after finishing. She seems most pleased for delivering her practiced response correctly. Artemis simply replies, "No," and leaves with a pensive look.

Thanking the employee for her time, you go back down the garden walkway and return to the sidewalk. There's an awkward silence while you each think about what to do next. You wonder aloud if you're still needed; you haven't split up to canvas any more ground, and Artemis never specified why she needed a trainer for the task. "To be frank, when she messaged me for help I was worried that she had been abducted," That would explain why Artemis needed to bother finding any trainers at all. But it doesn't explain why she needed trainers without any corporate ties. Noting this to yourself, you continue listening. "My colleague has never made this much trouble before, and she's not asking any our
other colleagues for help with whatever her problem may be-"

Your conversation is cut short by a stock notification jingle from Artemis' phone, still in hand. Checking it, her expression sours. "She's texted me her location." Artemis departs with the same speed as before, and you catch up only because her path is stopped by a high chain-link fence. You try to ask what's wrong, but by the time you get the words out she shushes you and indicates to look through.

Artemis seems troubled. "This is the parking garage for Acumen. Look where it connects, there." Following Artemis' finger, you see that the garage does in fact connect to the main Acumen headquarters. You ask Artemis if her colleague is nearby, and she checks her phone again. "It seems like it. She's about a hundred meters dead ahead." Looking forward, that would put the colleague deep within the garage proper. You begin to proceed down the parking entrance, seemingly unmanned, where employee vehicles may enter and depart.

"Before we go any further, I want you to swear to secrecy," she says, in a much more severe tone than before. "I have to assume that my colleague wasn't here for business reasons. If she was trespassing on company grounds, I would rather retrieve her without making fuss, and without mentioning any names. She will be in plenty enough trouble with me. She doesn't need to be in trouble with the law as well." You nod, wondering whether it's worse to run afoul of the law or afoul of Artemis.

***

The inside of the garage is as neatly maintained as the exterior. Small robotic cleaners meticulously sweep the floor in perfectly straight paths. You note this as an odd choice, given the plethora of Pokemon who would happily feast on any oil leaks or litter. Rows of vehicles sit, crammed closely into formation, awaiting their owners at the end of a day's work. The occasional employee passes by without paying you mind, seeming to assume that you belong. Without making much fuss, the three of you decide to split up to search for signs of Artemis' colleague. You remember to ask for the colleague's name, in case you need it.

Artemis%20Event.png

Artemis hesitates for a moment, and then seems to come to a decision as she speaks. "...Maribelle. Don't try just shouting for her."

Parting with each other, you look up and down the rows and rows of vehicles, filling several floors of the garage. Hundreds of employees must commute to this facility every day, you figure. Combined with the amount of traffic conveyed by train or bus in this city, and that could easily be a couple thousand. Given what Artemis told you about their products and services, Acumen must be one of the biggest suppliers in the region, if not the world. You ponder the sheer scope of that activity, until you're cut short by a sound next to you, like a door closing.

You check in all directions, but see nothing out of the ordinary. Certainly no one that could be Artemis' colleague. After a moment, you hesitantly question the air, "...Maribelle?" No response comes for a moment, and then you hear a car door click behind you. When you wheel around, you see that the sound came from a trunk, and a young woman of rather compact statue slowly reveals herself from within. The first thing on your mind is how she got in there, and you ask as much.

[HIDE=ENCOUNTER 1 RP Scenario]
Encounter 1
The sun is shining brightly overhead, casting tall shadows across the small street you find yourself in. Having left the garage the same way you entered, you quickly and covertly retreated to this quiet alley to rest in relative privacy. Designated pedestrians-only, the walking area is crammed on both sides with stores, eateries, and other attractions for the softly bustling throng that moves through it. Being seated at a restaurant patio above the crowd gives you have a wonderful view of the activity below, but you find it difficult to enjoy at the moment. You sip nervously at your drink, feeling a little bit like an out-of-place guest at a family function.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Artemis%20Event.png[/IMG]
"What you did was incredibly reckless," Artemis scolds. Maribelle sulks in her seat silently. "Rather than say a thing to any of us back home, you could have gotten in very real legal trouble; or worse, you could have come to harm. And how would we have known to help you?" Her words hang in the air heavy with the weight of anger and concern. Maribelle doesn't reply for what feels like an eternity.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/HowMuch_Maribelle.png[/IMG]
"I'm sorry, Artie." Artemis loosens only slightly at her answer. The pause after is just as awkward, as Maribelle shuffles a bit and tries to work out what to say. She keeps her head down as she mumbles, "I didn't want to get anyone else at the Pike in trouble."

You begin wondering if you should bother to stick around, but you don't want to draw their attention by getting up, either. Artemis pleads with Maribelle. "In trouble for what? What did you do?" Maribelle winces and Artemis doesn't press the issue for the moment. Right as you consider making your exit, Maribelle sits up and grabs her drink with both hands. She quaffs the entire thing in two or three gulps and sets the mug down firmly. She looks at Artemis directly, then takes a deep breath. It seems like she's come to an unpleasant decision.

"I... Snuck into the building to try to find Minerva." Artemis sits bolt upright. "I didn't get to look around very much, and I was almost seen a few times, I think... A bunch of security started showing up, and I had to hide in the garage to get away." Both you and Artemis can only look in shock for a moment, then Artemis pipes up. "Are you okay? Were you hurt?"

Now, Maribelle gets her turn be surprised. "Wait, you're not mad?" Artemis shakes her head. "No, I am absolutely furious with you, Maribelle. But that's much less important than making sure that you're okay." Maribelle winces, but she seems somewhat reassured. "I'm in one piece, Artie. I'm fine. But I want to find Minerva."

Artemis relaxes in her seat but remains intently focused on what Maribelle is saying. "How long has she been missing? And why didn't you tell any of us?"

Now that the tension in the air has eased a bit, you get your chance to ask--Who's this "Minerva?"

Maribelle turns and looks at you for the first time since the four of you sat down. She takes a moment to pick her words carefully, then speaks. "She's my first Pokemon, and my closest friend. I inherited her from my grandfather, and I've never seen another Pokemon like her in my life." Maribelle then frowns. "And... I don't think Acumen has, either; which is why they were interested in her." Artemis crosses her arms. "You wouldn't say anything to us, but you'll share all of that with a stranger you just met?" Maribelle blinks. "You brought them, Artie, so I figured they had to be alright."

Artemis shakes her head, then changes the subject. "You said that Acumen was interested in Minerva. What do you mean by that?"

As Maribelle starts to answer, the loft you're seated on shudders, creaks, and then lurches downward. Your beverages begin to slide across the now-slanted table, and the four of you look around frantically for the source of the disturbance. Artemis picks Maribelle up outright and dashes back inside the restaurant, and the two of you follow suit. As if on cue, the patio slumps dejectedly into the street below, watched by a crowd of onlookers who have left only just enough room for the debris. The four of you look through the now vestigal patio doors, hanging open precariously. From the debris emerges a fingerless-glove-glad hand, followed by a rather girthy frame and the motorcycle that carried it hither.

[IMG]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/trainers/biker.png[/IMG][IMG]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/trainers/roughneck.png[/IMG]
"My partna', that was completely insane!" A bald-headed ruffian squeezes between the wall of bystanders and stumbles forward, before high-fiving his compatriot with all of his might. "You showed those bowl-cut dorks what's good, too!" Maribelle gasps at this, but Artemis gestures for quiet. Most of the employees and other patrons have gone downstairs to try to observe the excitement up close, giving your group relative privacy. You watch the hooligans below try to extract their motorcycle from the rubble.

[IMG]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/trainers/waitress-gen4.png[/IMG]
"What in the world is going on?" A waitress emerges from the restaurant ground floor to confront the duo. The burlier brute grunts and continues hauling out his ride, and his bald companion wheels around to answer. "My partna' and I were tryin to get away from these bowl-cut goons that tried to corner us and take our rare Poke-" A loud and interrupting grunt from the bigger biker cuts him off, but Artemis and Maribelle exchange a nod. They signal the two of you to follow them downstairs to approach the fine gentlemen at the center of the ruckus.

When you reach the ground floor, two new figures have approached the hooligans from the restaurant side. You figure they have to be disgruntled customers. One of the new arrivals, towering over both the crowd and the hooligans, addresses them with a smile.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Soleil.png[/IMG]
"What's this about a rare Pokemon that has you driving into walls, friend?" The hooligans wheel around and stare venom at the man. "No business of yours, 'friend'," retorts the bald punk.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Luna.png[/IMG]
The other person, a smaller woman clad in moody colors, speaks up. "You're just going to ruin my meal and run? Not the most gentlemanly thing to do." The hooligans exchange confused glances, then the biker replies. "Ask them to fry you another fish. We've got bigger fish to fry, missy!"

The tall stranger laughs, and draws a Ball. "Not anymore you don't! If you think you're gonna just crash and dash, and not even treat us to a new meal, we'll just have to make a convincing argument."

Maribelle whispers to the two of you. "Do you think they'll use this 'rare Pokemon' they went on about earlier?" Artemis perks up at the suggestion, turns to her, and asks, "What do you mean?" Maribelle only says, "We have to get them to stick around and battle," and then turns to you and adds, "Call it a hunch." Artemis watches Maribelle with concern, says "If you think they're related to Acumen, we can't be seen here," and then looks to you as well. Sensing your cue, you make your way downstairs, pushing through the crowd gathered in the gaping restaurant facade.

As you make your way into the commotion, the clacking concrete and creaking wood that you have to navigate announces your approach. The fiery stranger notices and hails the two of you. "You want in, too? More the merrier! I'm Soleil, and this is Luna." Luna elbows Soleil in the hips, and he smiles and sarcastically corrects himself. "Excuse me, my esteemed associate, Luna." He raises his eyebrows at her, awaiting evaluation. "Better," Luna says, curtly.

Soleil laughs, and turns back to you. "Let's get started, then. I'm itching to give these guys an attitude correction." He punches his palm with enthusiasm. Soleil then booms to the ruffians, "Looks like they want a word with you, too!"

"Fine then. Fine!" says the biker. "You want to see our rare Pokemon so badly? Get ready to feast your eyes, because this is the only look you're gonna get!" Brandishing matching Luxury Balls, the hooligans step into position to battle. The bald roughneck speaks up, "Four on two is hardly fair! You lot only get one Pokemon each, and we get two each, you got that?"

"Suits me just fine," the moody diner replies. "I'll have you begging to pay my tab when I'm through with the two of you!" The hooligans share a glace of brief misgiving.

"Th-there! That's enough of a look! We're out of here!" The bikers recall their Pokemon from astride their motorcycle, and the crowd parts ahead of them as they brazenly make their exit. Distant sirens are finally making themselves heard, and Artemis nudges you. It's time to make yourselves scarce and find a new place of privacy to discuss your findings.

[IMG size="80x80"]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/HowMuch_Maribelle.png[/IMG]
"Those were definitely not Minerva," says Maribelle out loud, as much to herself as to any of you. For a moment, there's only the clack of the streetcar on the tracks to listen to. The cabin you four are riding in is quite private; it could seat perhaps ten at most, and you four have it to yourself at the moment. Maribelle looks up at the group and continues, "Minerva has life and energy to her. She listens attentively and always wants to interact with new people. Those... copies, were more like dolls just hanging loosely..." she trails off at the end, losing herself in thought for a moment. Minerva must clearly be a very special Pokemon, you decide, and you tell Maribelle as such. She nods with certainty.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Artemis%20Event.png[/IMG]
"That's an understatement," Artemis replies. "The Pike has more than a few unusual Pokemon under its roof, and plenty that are more powerful, but Minerva might be the one that raises the most questions." As a response, you muse aloud that finding a professor willing to have a look wouldn't be hard at all, if Minerva is so unique.

Maribelle shakes her head with insistence. "Not a chance. Minerva's not just some rare specimen or find. She's the last family I have left. I don't need to know more about her than that." Her last statement raises your eyebrow, and you can sense that you're entering into emotional territory.

"You're probably about to say; what if she ever needed... Medicine? Repair? You'd be right." Maribelle hesitates, trying to piece together complex feelings into a coherent thought. "Maribelle, you don't have to say any more unless you want to," Artemis tries to say soothingly, but Maribelle is too deep in thought to respond. You can visibly see her breathing and expression calm as she manages to assemble her statement.

"Not long after I learned to battle, I think, my grandpa put together a gadget that he called his 'Emotive Device'. I remember being just, completely awestruck. When you held it, you could feel what the previous holders felt when they held it." Maribelle's storytelling pace picks up as she continues, "So I started asking my grandpa to drive me to libraries, and to help me look up things about machines. He was so confused, since I was trying to learn to battle too, but went with it without complaining." She can't help but smirk slightly as she recalls dear childhood memories. "And day by day, week by week, I would sneak back into that attic to work on a doll to hold the device. And I had to keep coming up with decoy gadgets to work on in my room, to throw grandpa off of my trail!"

Maribelle continues her story. "Anyway, I got her working. Imagine my surprise when she introduces herself out loud, the moment she lights up! Loud enough for my grandpa to hear, and he came barging upstairs with a bat and a flashlight, scaring the daylights out of me." At this point, she's completely engrossed in the telling, and even Artemis can't help but smile ever-so-slightly. "The very first thing he did when he saw it was just me was, well, swear as loud as he could manage and drop the bat somewhere offhand. He thought we were being robbed!" Maribelle chuckles. "The second thing he did was ask me, if I had told even a single soul about the doll while I was getting the books or the tools in town. And I told him; not a chance, because I was too scared of him grounding me if he found out I was using his device!"

"He grounded me for three months, for the record, for taking the device without permission. Which was probably fair." Maribelle admits flatly. "But, he let me name the doll—guess the name, if you can—and he let her stay in the main house with the other Pokemon. But she wasn't to be allowed outside, ever; and I wasn't to mention her to anyone, ever. All of that seemed so paranoid until now, but so obvious in hindsight." The dimming sunlight as the afternoon blends into evening sets appropriate ambiance for the change in Maribelle's tone. "Skipping a bunch of stuff here, I left Minerva with grandpa while I went to a boarding high school here in Arkland owing to my studies in battling and general machinery—double major. And not a year into that, I got a package from my grandpa."

You gulp, but Maribelle stays firm in her retelling. "The package contained an old-style carved ball... Minerva's ball. And I haven't heard anything from him since. So I inherited Minerva, the house, and a few other Pokemon besides." She keeps her misty eyes focused forward with admirable strength. "Not long after that, I started working at the Pike, since it's here in Arkland and my studies were applicable." Artemis tilts her head in thought. "I had forgotten that you were hired under Tabitha. It feels like an eternity ago." Maribelle nods, "Mhm. I've worked there ever since." Knowing that someone has gone missing related to these events; Artemis' request for secrecy, and their non-participation in the altercation in the boulevard, now make sense.

"This is our stop, ahead," Artemis interrupts by indicating the approaching rail landing, sparing you any further awkwardness. As the standing doors open, the cooling afternoon wind clears the air in the cabin in perfect metaphorical fashion. Maribelle thanks the two of you for listening to her story, and you say that she should think nothing of it. The four of you disembark as soon as the inflow of passengers stops, and walk up the hill towards the Acumen building as quickly as you feel you can, without attracting undue attention.

***

Even having taken most of the trip by rail, the uphill walk to approach Acumen headquarters is grueling. You remember that previously, the bus dropped you off quite close to your destination; but neither Artemis nor Maribelle wanted to take a method of travel where they couldn't disembark at will. You decide to plainly state your conclusion, that Acumen is involved in Maribelle's family troubles.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Artemis%20Event.png[/IMG]
"Clearly so," answers Artemis. As the four of you move with the bustling foot traffic of the main streets, back among the skyscrapers, she elaborates on her thinking. "Someone must be involved in the production of these counterfeit Minerva models, and for them to turn up so soon after the original goes missing is incriminating on its own."

[IMG size="80x80"]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/HowMuch_Maribelle_Coat.png[/IMG]
Maribelle adds on, "And those guys said they were running from 'bowl-cut dorks'. That sounds like some people we're already familiar with, doesn't it?" You nod in agreement, and all four of you pick up the pace as best you can.

"Speaking of," says Artemis, showing no signs of weariness. "You didn't finish explaining their interest in Minerva." Maribelle tries to catch a breath without slowing the group's ascent, and then answers. "It's obvious, right? They wanted to make copies of Minerva for some reason." Artemis shakes her head and clarifies. "You're avoiding my question. You said back at the restaurant that they were interested, before we saw the replicas. How long have you suspected Acumen?"

Maribelle avoids Artemis' gaze, but answers plainly. "Probably... since the break-in, at least." Artemis answers sharply, "And you didn't say anything to us? You shouldn't have kept this to- Hang on, wait. How did you know it was Acumen from the break-in?" You trudge along behind them, trying to keep up with the pair and ignore the burning of your lungs. You can't fathom how they manage to hold so much conversation while on a mid-city mountain hike.

"A few months before, right after I started working at the Pike, I was visited by a recruiter of theirs at school. They were interested in my 'automation projects', even though I hadn't shown Minerva to anyone, which should have been a massive red flag at the time." Maribelle takes another deep breath without breaking her stride, and continues. "After that visit, I started getting emails from them, and then physical letters, and later I would get fliers taped to my locker or my door." Artemis balks at this. "That's horrifying. I had no idea—again, why didn't you say something?"

"I... didn't want to make trouble." At this, Artemis rolls her eyes in exasperation. Maribelle continues unperturbed. "I didn't want to make problems for all of you on my first month on the job, and as things went on I just got used to keeping it to myself. And I was so busy, that sometimes it would honestly slip my mind. I was doing school, and working with you all, and taking care of a bunch of Pokemon I was suddenly the trainer of. Oh, and remember, I inherited a house. I had-I still have to pay for that! I was more scared of losing the Pike job than I was of being stalked!" Artemis can only shake her head in disbelief, "You know how we think of you. I wish you would have let us help you with this long ago." Maribelle's expression mixes guilt and care. "I know how you all think of me now. And now I have to try to make this right."

***

The two of you arrive at the corner across from the towering Acumen headquarter building, and you raggedly catch your breath. Artemis and Maribelle, having arrived moments before, have stopped near the crossing to formulate their plan. Artemis directs your attention to the main doors, and says, "If we can get a tour, we can find out what areas are open to the public, and which areas are off-limits. How we get in to those areas... We can figure that out later." The four of you take a moment to hash out the specifics. Then, with this simple plan, the four of you take the next available crossing and make your way over to the entrance doors. When you approach the receptionist, he pulls himself from his slouch into alertness. He asks how he can help, and Artemis gives her prepared reply regarding getting a tour.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20M.png[/IMG]
The receptionist says in monotone "If you could wait just a moment, I'd be happy to take a look for you," and begins rapdily tapping away on his watch. "Tours are currently on hiatus pending renovation," he curtly replies. "Reservations for tours are on backfill, with schools and manufacturing partners getting priority-"

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20F.png[/IMG]
He is cut off by the rapid approach of a coworker, labeled as a guide, who cheerily puts her phone away and says, "You're Maribelle Aspen, VIP, right? Glad to finally meet you! We'd be delighted to show you around the main areas of the project. If you would follow us?" The receptionist looks at his coworker and says, "Us?" Artemis and Maribelle exchange glances, and then look to you. Artemis turns her hand up in the gesture you four had agreed upon—-meaning 'play along'. Maribelle nods. "Lead the way."

The Acumen workers lead the four of you to a lavish brass-doored elevator, ushering you inside. Once the door closes, the receptionist continues to fiddle with his watch in an attempt to look busy. The guide merrily bounces on her heels and says, "My employer is just thrilled that you're considering our offer at last! I've been sent to deliver you to her directly." Maribelle sheepishly replies, "Is that so?" The guide continues, "Just so! We take responsibility for the project failing to meet your standards, and we're sorry the results haven't been to your liking so far. But with your help I bet we can finally produce a fully functional model!" She holds her fists to her chests and closes her eyes, seeming to fantasize about who-knows-what.

The elevator places your group on a switchover floor; a large landing where many other elevators to yet-higher floors are available. Some of these elevators are secured with passkey scanners. The floor is finely furnished with tables for working or eating, and there are handful of employees on the floor minding their own; most of them in the same garish Acumen uniforms.

The workers lead you across the space, eyes fixed forward. The receptionist shuffles uncomfortably while the guide prattles on. "Imagine my surprise, Ms. Aspen, when I learned you were so young! I mean no offense, but the project is so elaborate—you're clearly very experienced already! If I may ask, how did you get so good?" She pauses for an answer, but no answer is forthcoming. Your group stops, and she turns around.
Maribelle is missing, to everyone's surprise. Before anyone can say a word, they're approached by another Acumen worker; seemingly a researcher.

[IMG size="80x80"]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/trainers/scientist-gen6.png[/IMG]
"Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to have seen a passkey? I swear I just had it..." You each share an understanding glance with Artemis.
The guide covers her mouth in shock. "Uh oh." She begins to reach for her phone, but Artemis gets her attention and says, "This is a big place. Could you help us find her?" The guide takes a moment to reply, saying "What do you- Oh." Her prior enthusiasm and pep instantly vanish, and her tone changes to exhasperation. "I get it. This is espionage."

Ah, well. She pauses a moment, then adds, "I was really hoping you were here to helm the project. We get commission for those models, you know. But if you're not with us, then you know what they say."

The researcher makes a peep and begins to shuffle away, and receptionist says in shock, "Wait, right here!?" The guide says "I'm terribly sorry. If you're obstructing my employer's efforts, we may have no choice but to escort you out." She draws a ball from her purse and nudges the receptionist to do the same; then nudges him again, and then nudges him with considerable force. He yelps and complies this time, drawing a ball of his own.

The guide scowls as she recalls her Pokemon. "I was supposed to win you clients over, but you never planned to consider our offer in the first place, did you?" She tucks back her hair and straightens her shirt. "I must insist again, though. You're aware just how lucrative our offers are, right?"

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20M.png[/IMG]
"The-" the receptionist begins to say, before the guide harshly cuts him off. "What? We're negotiating, can't you see?" The receptionist gestures towards the main elevators and finishes, "Security is here already, look."
The guide's face sinks. "Oh no. I can't be seen here. We'll be fired!" She grabs the receptionist by the lapel and all but drags him away from the scene of the battle. Artemis spots an exit in the near corner, "Service stairs, over there!" The three of you run as fast as you can.

[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Artemis%20Event.png[/IMG]
"I am going to have some very specific words for Maribelle if we make it out of this." You wonder again if Maribelle might not be better off running afoul of the law, rather than afoul of Artemis. You don't have much time to think on it, though. Artemis continues, "I'll lead the guards downstairs to buy you time; don't worry about me. Head upstairs and find Maribelle. Worry about finding Minerva only if Maribelle is safe." You assure Artemis that you'll do what you can, and begin to climb. A moment later, after you've lost line of sight, you feel and hear a loud, heavy impact. Has Artemis had her Pokemon destroy the stairs? You continue, as fast as your legs can take you, up the spiraling service staircase.

***

After what feels like another torturous eternity of climbing, the absurdity of the situation begins to set in. You're trespassing in the headquarters of one of the largest companies in the region; you've battled staff and you're accomplice at minimum to vandalism. All to track down a Pokemon you've never seen in a skyscraper you've never explored. How are you supposed to know which floors to check, anyway?
Weighing the risks, the two of you decide to message Maribelle. Can Acumen track texts sent from inside their building? You decide to be as vague as you can, and send a text asking what turn to take. You continue your climb for a while, sore as can be from the day's exertions, before you get a reply from Maribelle, saying simply, "112". You check the label of the next door you approach—124. You've overshot by so much...

You send a reply saying you're nearby, and begin heading back as best you can.
[IMG]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/HowMuch_Maribelle_Coat.png[/IMG]
"Found you!" Maribelle says, as you approach the 112th landing. "I think I know- Hey, where's Artie?" You explain the fight in the lobby and Artemis' subsequent diversion, and Maribelle rubs her face with her hand. "She's gonna kill me, isn't she?"

***

The floor Maribelle leads you through is eeriely deserted. You estimate that you're near the top of the tower; on what is labeled as a 'leisure level'. Wide, doorless archways lead to such amenities as gym equipment, a pristine dining area, and even a screening room. You and Maribelle turn the floor upside-down, but turn up no sign of Minerva. You suggest that this might be the wrong floor. "This is where I heard Minerva. She has to be, or have been, here somewhere."

[img]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20Elite%201.png[/img]
"What you heard was this, I'm afraid." An impeccably-trimmed Acumen employee steps into view from the service stairs, with practiced grace. He presses his phone, and a distinctive mechanical squeal plays.

[img]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20Elite%202.png[/img]
"We were using the sound to look for you. Our employer has sent us to once more present her offer."

"And how did you think that would go?" Maribelle braces herself for a fight.

The bald employee continues, "Better than this, I'd hoped. If you're set on declining our offer, then you'll need to leave." The beturbaned employee wipes his glasses, then says, "If you'd like to hear her offer directly, we can take you to her without a fuss. You may yet find yourself swayed."

You're beginning to understand the nature of the offer being made to Maribelle. She steps forward and draws a ball. "No chance. I'm here to take Minerva home." You draw yours to match.

The bald employee draws his own ball without reaction. "That's not an option we're offering you."

Code:
The so-called leisure level is badly thrashed after your battle with the employees. Maribelle recalls her Pokemon and addresses your opponents.

[img]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/HowMuch_Maribelle_Coat.png[/img]
"Take me to Minerva."

[img]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20Elite%202.png[/img]
"No," the bald employee says flatly. "Our orders are to take you to our employer to negotiate, or nowhere at all." The other employee taps away at his phone at blinding speed, then receives a reply notification.

[img]https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rasalhage/CAPBBP/refs/heads/master/BattleFacilities/SeasonalEvents/2022HowMuch/Acumen%20Elite%202.png[/img]
"Look here," he says, turning his phone to you and Maribelle. Maribelle lurches forward, but catches herself. "That's her!"

[img]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/gen5/magearna.png[/img]
On screen, you see your first glimpse of the Pokemon who this mess is all about. Seated patiently in an opulently plush chair is a moderately-sized mechanical doll, fascinating in their complexity. Because of their impartial features, you can't tell if the Pokemon is afraid, content, or anything else, really.

The employee continues, "Our employer would like you to see her and AP-07, so you can ascertain that she is well kept."

Maribelle scowls, "And so you can hawk your offer at me again," and the employee nods. "Just so." The bald employee gestures towards the elevator. "Shall we?"

This event's story is to be continued in "All You Hold Dear".

"All You Hold Dear" will offer improved rewards for using Save Data from this event, so consider preserving HP and Energy for a difficult fight. (It will also offer the option to start fresh, for diminished reward.)

"How Much is a Heart?", above, will run until April 8th UTC to account for the delays.

Expect a minor event to run between now and April, overlapping "How Much is a Heart?" and "All You Hold Dear", to get us back on schedule.

Based on event feedback, this overlapping event may involve some kind of generalized quest or quests, rather than playable content. Please feel free to continue providing feedback.
