So it is my birthday today, and of course, with birthdays come presents. Now I just opened my girlfriend's package, and she sent me this painting she made, with waves in the shape of a heart and a sun in the background... it's really the loveliest present I've ever received from someone...

So, what do you guys like about giving presents, receiving them, making them...

my boyfriend and I have a rule [he came up with it]; no more than 25 quid for a present on the idea that if you can't find someone something they'll love for 25 quid, you don't know them at all.

The best present I've ever had was from him for my birthday this year; my 'my marxist feminist dialectic brings all the boys to the yard' tshirt. I love it. I've had presents off family like a computer, and a television, and all that, but my tshirt is my most prized possession.

It's his birthday relatively soon [october 30th] and I'm thinking on what to get him.. a 'bukkake ruined my carpet' tshirt is a possibility. so childish!

p.s. happy birthday Altmer!

I think the best part about giving presents is the small amount of extra happiness you bring someone when you give them something. Of course, the best things in life aren't things, but more happiness never hurts. I also enjoy spending up to 20 minutes picking out funny birthday cards. Yes, I'm weird.

EDIT: happy birthday altmer

just pointing out that i loved this thought in particular

i was a little worried that you were going to say somthing like " it was the shittest present ever" or somthing along those lines, and that would have made me sad.
happy birthday, btw.
i like giving presents that people dont expect at all, but are really pleased with, thats always pretty cool.
as for recieving them, i like opening them, its so exciting.
Btw is there any chance of pictures?

I don't know how much a quid is in relation to the USD, but I generally don't plan on spending more than $20 for a present, ever...unless it's for somebody I care about a great amount; and even then it's not like it's a requirement.

I plan on covering "Love Remains Forever" or another similar song at my ex-girlfriend's birthday which is in just over a month. Aside from that I'll probably get her some batteries for her camera (she takes a lot of pictures) and this one necklace that she at a giftshop to one place we went, and that was only about $20.

I turn 17 in less than a month, and all I really want is money or a good set of dumbells. And something meaningful from my ex, but that's not something I should be expecting. Afterall, we did break up =\.

I personally try to get something the person would use, so its not like an "oh, that's nice, now where do I put it?" kind of gift. Cards are definitely my favorite part of giving gifts though. I usually spend more on that than on the actual gift. I used to make my own cards using a computer program, but that doesn't always work when you are short on time (yay getting mothers and fathers day gifts morning of) or when you just can't think of anything to say. I do always try to add something to the store bought cards though, makes it more personal and like you put more thought into it.

Of course, the gift I like to give the most is to go and do something with the person. This works because most of my friends are out of the birthday party stage, so I can just hang out with them for a day and have it be my treat.

i much prefer home-made cards to presents. my girlfriend's birthday is coming up and i need to make her one!

not that i'm a cheapskate, i've got her a digital camera too

man it's so hard to get presents
so i just tell my friends to find something and i pay for it

The best presents are the novelty ones. A games console is great, but it can't even hope to compare to that plastic dinosaur with a pencil sharpner in its arse.

I don't like presents myself. Neither giving them or receiving them. I know that any joy will only be short term, and is unlikely to make me happier as a person. I live a very content life.

I have mixed feelings about gift giving.

Sometimes I get what I want, and other times, I get things I won't even use. Either way, it's everyone's way of saying that they love you, and that's what really matters to me.

Money is the best present someone could give to me, really.Choosing your own stuff to buy is awesome.

About giving presents...I am not that creative.

i dont get presents, credit crunch.

so you managed to wait all that time without opening it Jorn? Hope you had a good day.

IMO cards are probably among the best gifts you can give because they're so personal. It shows the person you're giving it to how much time and though you put into them, and that shows you care a lot (...or a little if its a crappy card). They can also last for as long as you want if you keep them in a safe place (mine are up on a bulletin board in my room :toast:). They're also cheap!

Hmm, I don't really remember ever getting anything awesome for my birthday, I'll usually just get money...

Me too. Anything that I know I can enjoy from an enonymous gift will, most likely, be either clothing, a card or money.

I miss the days when we bought countless games for our Playstation and Nintendo! The times when our parents were tormented until they eventually agreed on buying us a new mobile phone. Now, we, or at least myself, do not get these kind of presents anymore. We're left without the necessities in life, and have to settle for what will come in handy in our day-to-day lives.

today is my 21st birthday...!

only thing I received so far is a Dallas Cowboy Jason Witten jersey. Freaking awesome.

Eh, I kind of have to agree with Altmer here (happy birthday btw); the best gifts are something that you made, that shows you put some time into it. It could be a picture, painting, song, meal, etc. It doesn't even have to be that good really. If you can tell they put work into it, then it is a good present.

I usually do this. Though a part of me still wants to get those crazy gifts like consoles, computers, cars, (I guess anything that starts with a "C" lol).

I admit I don't give the most creative gifts. I always tend to give money or a gift card to my friends on their birthdays since the only person that knows them really well is themselves.

For close friends, I always buy a blank card and write my own stuff on there, since it is the thought that counts right?

Well, my dad's birthday was a couple days ago, so Intead of buying him something, which he usually does not like, I drew him a nice picture with a Mario Kart theme, as this is all he plays on my Wii. And, he liked it quite a lot.

My friends and I just give each other the token 20 dollars and a funny card when it comes time for birthdays. I think clothing would be a better gift because it's personal, you remember the person's generosity for it, and it still serves a good purpose after you get it. My friends don't think like I do (almost all of them have opposite political veiws) so I stick with the 20 dollars and card, then call it a birthday gift.
