========
Spore grants Amoonguss the ability to put threatening Pokemon such as Tornadus-T, Mega Mawile, Mega Alakazam, and Heatran to sleep and somewhat makes up for Amoonguss's lack of offensive presence by allowing it to force out Pokemon with the threat of getting put to sleep. Hidden Power Fire allows Amoonguss to check Kartana while also preventing it from being setup fodder for Mega Mawile and Shift Gear Magearna as well as Spikes fodder for Ferrothorn. Sludge Bomb's notable poison chance and damage output makes it the preferred option over Clear Smog, but Clear Smog can still be chosen to neutralize boosting threats such as Clefable and Serperior. Stun Spore can be run instead of Sludge Bomb to still cripple threats that think they're safe after Amoonguss has put a Pokemon to sleep. It should be noted that Giga Drain can be foregone in favor of Stun Spore if Amoonguss's team already has another reliable way of beating Ash-Greninja.
Set Details
========
56 Defense EVs allow Amoonguss to survive a +2 Smart Strike from Kartana. The given Special Defense investment along with a Calm nature allows Amoonguss to avoid the 2HKO from Ash-Greninja's Dark Pulse and lets Amoonguss check Pokemon like Magearna and Tapu Koko more reliably. On stall teams, a more physically defensive spread can be run to check threatening stallbreakers such as Mega Mawile and Choice Band Tapu Bulu more reliably. Rocky Helmet should be used with this spread to wear these Pokemon down more steadily.
Usage Tips
========
Amoonguss should be brought in safely against Pokemon that it can check, such as Ash-Greninja, Magearna, Tapu Bulu, and Clefable. From there, it should look to cripple the opposition. Thanks to Amoonguss's decent bulk and Regenerator, it can also pivot into Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T and Kartana to scout what move they lock themselves into. However, you should be careful when using Amoonguss to check these Pokemon, as it lacks recovery and can't reliably take on Pokemon like Choice Band Kartana and Tapu Bulu because of this. Be mindful of when to use Spore because a fodder Pokemon could come in to take it for other Pokemon such as Mega Alakazam, Heatran, and Tornadus-T, which will actively be looking to take advantage of Amoonguss. If Pokemon such as Tornadus-T, Mega Alakazam, and Zapdos are predicted to switch in once another Pokemon has been put to sleep with Spore, Amoonguss should attempt to cripple them with Stun Spore, in Tornadus-T and Mega Alakzam's case, or poison them with Sludge Bomb. It's also important to actively utilize Regenerator with double switches out of Pokemon that it checks, as Amoonguss needs to be at a high range of HP to consistently check Pokemon, and this allows it to keep up the maximum amount of momentum, especially after using Spore.
Team Options
========
Amoonguss fits on teams ranging from balance to bulky offensive to even some stall teams. While Amoonguss has enough bulk to pivot into Ash-Greninja, having a Dark-resistant Pokemon like Clefable, Assault Vest Magearna, or Tyranitar is mandatory to prevent Amoonguss from getting flinched down by Dark Pulse. Steel-types like Magearna, Celesteela, and Jirachi can check Psychic-type Pokemon like Mega Alakazam and Tapu Lele that threaten Amoonguss. Because Heatran is a massive threat to Amoonguss, Pokemon that can check it such as Garchomp and Gliscor are good teammates. Mega Slowbro in particular is a good partner to Amoonguss, as they can form a Regenerator core while Mega Slowbro checks Heatran, Mega Medicham, and Mega Latios. In return, Amoonguss keeps Electric-types in check and removes Toxic Spikes. Electric-types like Rotom-W, Zapdos, and Tapu Koko are capable of checking Tornadus-T, which is one of the main Pokemon that will try to actively take advantage of Amoonguss. It should be noted that Tapu Koko nullifies Spore's ability to cripple a Pokemon, so make sure to be careful when using both on the same team. Because Amoonguss has to stay at high health to consistently check Pokemon, teammates that can remove entry hazards like Tornadus-T and Rotom-W are good options.
