NEW: This is a Celebration CAP, meaning that we are going out of our way to break some rules. We'll be creating a set of three Pokemon this time around, a set of Fire, Water, and Grass-type starters! You can read exactly which rules we'll be breaking here and the logic behind Celebration CAPs here. Give these a read-through to get some context.

-----

Legal Pokedex submissions must meet the following standards
  • Pokedex Entries must have flawless grammar. Smogon has a Grammar & Prose team that will help identify mistakes.
  • Pokedex Entries cannot be longer than 32 words.
  • Pokedex Entries can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 0-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Double quote (")
    • Period (.)
    • Comma (,)
    • Colon (:)
    • Semi-colon (;)
    • Space

Work In Progress (WIP) Pokedex Entries can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Pokedex Entries can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with multiple Pokedex Entries. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP Pokedex Entries by posting them repeatedly, or making minor wording changes. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all Pokedex Entries by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person.

Pokedex Entry Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread that final submissions are open. Any final submission posted prior to the Moderator notification post, will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that all submitters have equal opportunity to post final submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Pokedex entries Final Submissions must posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on it's own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • "<Pokemon Name>, the <Species Name> Pokemon", with the Pokemon name and the Species Name in bold
  • A blank line
  • The Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:

Final Submission

Magearna, the Artificial Pokémon

Sun: This artificial Pokémon, constructed more than 500 years ago, can understand human speech but cannot itself speak.

Moon: Its mechanized body is merely a vessel. Its true self is its Soul-Heart, an artificial soul.

Ultra Sun: It synchronizes its consciousness with others to understand their feelings. This faculty makes it useful for taking care of people.

Ultra Moon: Built roughly 500 years ago by a scientist, the part called the Soul-Heart is the actual life-form.
Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

CAP 25 so far:

Topic Leader: reachzero

Topic Leadership Team:
EpicUmbreon29 - Typing
snake_rattler - Ability
jas61292 - Stats
cbrevan - Movepool

Name: Starter Trio CAPs

Description: This CAP is not one Pokemon, but three seperate Pokemon, based off of a Grass/Water/Fire starter trio.

Explanation: There is rarely such thing as a competitively viable starter Pokemon in the OU metagame, rare exceptions being Serperior, Greninja, and Blaziken for their insanely powerful abilities, and Infernape for his speed and movepool. Running three seperate CAP Processes with different Concepts can be loads of fun, and a nice way to celebrate CAP with our own starter trio! I'd love to see what the artists can come up with, and what pre-evos will be made alongside this trio, as well.
I've spoken to Birkal about this framework, and I've decided that this framework would definitely limit the Typing stage of each CAP, but not necessarily limit the Abilities stages, as Overgrow, Torrent, and Blaze aren't very competitively viable, and not necessarily limit the Stats stages, as starter trios tend not to share the same BSTs, giving us flexibility with where and how we want to place stats, especially with each "starter" most likely having a different concept from the others.

Possible Questions:
Is it possible to create a fully competitively viable Grass/Water/Fire trio?
What can be learned from a trio of Pokemon that will mostly likely check, if not counter, each other in a Rock Paper Scissors manner?
Exactly what does it take to create a fully competitively viable starter trio, something unprecedented in all of official, competitive Pokemon?

Of course, feedback is all but begged for as we work to flesh out this framework!

Starter Fact Sheet

Final Submission
  • Name - Astounding Ability Actualization (Triple A)
  • Description - These Pokemon each maximize the potential of their given, separate abilities by coordinating their movepools and that ability's competitive effect.
  • Justification - This is an Actualization concept much like Cyclohm's original "Neglected Ability." In my research on what made Pokemon with "Starter Level" stats effective, the common denominator was they all had abilities they used to full effect with their other competitive aspects. This framework gives us a unique opportunity to A-B test some fairly powerful abilities we usually shy away from and bring out an effective competitive starter trio.
  • Questions To Be Answered -
    • Which Abilities are best suited to a full, comprehensive exploration of their specific mechanics?
    • Why does Ability seem to be the common factor in taking "starter-esque" Pokemon into prominence (e.g. Protean and Battle Bond Greninja, Contrary Serperior, Speed Boost Blaziken to Ubers, etc.)
    • What is the threshold where maximizing an ability goes toi far, such as Blaziken's combination of Swords Dance, strong attack and mid-grade speed, and high BP STABS with Speed Boost or Protean Greninja's huge speed and just-varied enough movepool in prior Generations?
    • How will introducing three specialized Pokemon into the metagame at once impact it overall?
    • Which type combinations along with the starter types are best suited to maximizing the potential of a specific ability, and why?
  • Explanation - Competitive Pokemon has suffered from a massive power creep for a long time. In order for a Pokemon to be effective, not only does it have to be fairly good generally, it also can't be directly outclassed. Considering our Framework, our Pokemon are already competing against Heatran/Volcarona, Toxapex/Keldeo/Greninja, and Ferrothorn/Kartana for offensive or defensive roles. However, each of those Pokemon have their own flaws that give our FWG CAP Trio space to explore if we are focused on a key niche for each of them.

Let's take Grass for example, and Tough Claws. Tough Claws boosts one of the most incredibly CAP-relevant moves, Grass Knot, because it is a special contact attack. Only Mega Metagross ever even came close to utilizing this combination, and Mega-Meta was banned (for other reasons, of course). Grass could also use it's huge number of healing options with Triage, including priority Strength Sap that even outruns Bullet Punch. Nearly every Fire attack has a secondary effect chance perfect for Serene Grace or Sheer Force. Water has a few specific moves that would also love Serene Grace, but would also appreciate breaking through Gastrodon and Mollux with Mold Breaker. Suffice it to say, this concept gives us an ability to meet our Framework demands and think through a huge combination of synergistic types and abilities in a single project.

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Reef Pokémon

Sun: Known as the "Lord of the Reefs," this Pokémon defends its habitat from threats like Toxapex until the bitter end.

Moon: It decorates its sturdy shell with sick coral polyps. The nutrients from its mucus membrane rejuvenates them, making its shell stronger in the process.

Ultra Sun: This imposing Pokémon cares deeply for Corsola. Individuals have been known to eat as many as a thousand Toxapex in retaliation.

Ultra Moon: It walks for miles around the reefs that comprise its territory, its mucus membrane providing them with nutrients. This has led to it being named the "Lord of the Reefs."

I wanted to get across both its threatening, bulky side, as well as its affectionate and caring personality.

WIP

Snaelstrom
, the Snail Pokémon

Sun: It protects Corsola from Toxapex which gives Corsola a false sense of safety as Snaelstrom will soon make it its prey.

Moon: After adapting against fighting Toxapex, it can use the poison from Toxapex against it by using it to heal itself.

Ultra Sun: It slowly moves for miles to find prey it can dine on no matter the size of it with the prey being unable to defeat it most of the time due to its sturdy shell capable of resisting explosions.

Ultra Moon: Its body can resist the thorns of a Toxapex and heal itself with the poison which allows it to easily eat Toxapex.

Snaelstrom, the Coral Reef Pokemon

Sun: If cared for badly, Snaelstrom's coral will begin to decay and fall off. This process is currently considered irreversible, so some trainers will buy fake coral and glue it onto Snaelstrom.

Moon: This Pokemon's dances are notable for their use of undulation, as well as for having surprisingly fast spins. Some evidence indicates that these dances became the inspiration for belly dancing.

Ultra Sun: Snaelstrom are capable of creating cosmetics from the ground up spikes of Toxapex. However, these cosmetics are fatal to humans.

Ultra Moon: Competitions between Primarina and Snaelstrom are considered one of both the most beautiful and most intimidating sights in the world.

WIP

Snaelstrom, the Atoll Pokemon

Sun: Although it may seem serious in battle, Snaelstrom also has a playful side.

Moon: While at the beach, many parents leave their children with this Pokémon.

Ultra Sun: If its coral dies, it will shed it off. This can be an issue, since this Pokémon uses its coral to absorb nutrients.

Ultra Moon: Even a single touch can cause coral shedding. Trainers must be incredibly cautious with Snaelstrom.

WIP

Snaelstrom, the Tide Turner Pokemon

Sun: These Pokémon seem to have developed a motherly relationship with Corsola. They will use the coral on their backs to shield them from predators.

Moon: Snaelstrom will gather during the full moon to dance together. Those who see this forbidden dance will willingly dive deep into the ocean without ever coming back.

Ultra Sun: Ancient legends say Snaelstrom created their own underwater society in a coral kingdom. They will frequently kidnap humans to visit their homeland, unaware of their inability to breathe underwater.

Ultra Moon: They will dance beautifully during the full moon. This mystical dance will often create whirlpools and maelstroms--and even control the tide as they please.

I added these explanations to give more depth to the dex entries! Each of them was inspired by something very special.
Sun: As said Snaelstrom's designer, Pipotchi, Snaelstrom has a close relationship with Corsola, close to that of a mother and her children. I wanted to focus on that for this entry. A very simple but cute story.
Moon: This is one of my favourites! Besides the fact that Snaelstrom has a membrane that somewhat resembles the outfit of a belly dancer (that seems to be inspiring a lot of entries), I chose to give it a dancing vibe because of Dogfish44's winning Snaelstrom movepool that showcases it as a "dancer". Although Snaelstrom's body structure might make it seem like a clumsy dancer, I did some research and found a documentary about the "dance of corals", a phenomena that happens due to the influence of the full moon, even though the scientists haven't quite figured out why yet...
I also wanted to add a darker tone, similar to that of SM and USUM's entries, inspired by some japanese mangá!
Ultra Sun: My brazilian roots are something that are very dear to me. I wanted to reference that by referencing the Yellow Woodpecker Ranch! It's a very old series of brazilian stories for children (it also contains some hidden messages and protests about the injustices and prejudice that were happening in Brazil during that time) that is extremely popular over here. It focuses on our beautiful folklore and myths. One of these stories focuses on the Reino das Águas Claras (Kingdom of Clear Waters), an underwater coral kingdom! I will leave an episode of the cartoon series they made based on the Yellow Woodpecker Ranch's books. It's english subbed!
Again, I added a darker tone, similarly to how SM and USUM's entries are being done for a lot of pokémon!
Ultra Moon: For this one, I referenced Snaelstrom's name (Snail + Maelstrom). It also referenced it's species name, the Tide Turner pokémon! Some say Snaelstrom will bring luck to those in need! :)

Snaelstrom the Reef Pokemon

Sun: Snaelstrom can transport several corsola on the back of its shell at once. This pokemon is happiest when protecting others.

Moon: Snaelstrom are very territorial, but will take many smaller pokemon under its wing.

Ultra sun: Snaelstrom is the natural predator of Toxapex. Reefs where Snaelstrom reside attract huddles of corsola for that reason.

Ultra moon: Snaelstrom has a stomach that can digest any type of poison. There are programs in place to release snaelstrom into areas overrun by dangerous toxic Pokémon.

Final Submission

Snaelstrom the Barrier Reef Pokémon.

Sun: When breeding season arrives, they will change the colour of the coral on its shell to different colours, depending on their personality, to find a partner to mate with.

Moon: Before going to sleep, Snaelstrom will use its shell to blend in with rocks found on the ocean floor, to prevent Sharpedo from eating them while they're asleep.

Ultra Sun: When it's not breeding season, Snaelstrom are very friendly Pokémon and can sometimes be seen teaching kids how to swim near the shore, while protecting them like they were their own babies.

Ultra Moon: They're known for protecting Corsola from Toxapex attacking, and will feast on Toxapex after it has been defeated, making Corsola seek out Snaelstrom for protection and will help it heal after battle.

Snaelstrom, the Reef Pokémon

Sun: Snaelstrom can be seen gathering in large clusters during breeding season. Many call this phenomenon the "Wandering Reef".

Moon: Female Snaelstrom have a tendency to adopt orphaned Corsola as their own. This results in them being enemies with Toxapex.

Ultra Sun: A Snaelstrom's favorite snack is the insides of a Toxapex. This results in Corsola gathering near them for protection.

Ultra Moon: A ancient king once purchased a personal coral reef for his Snaelstrom. Some say they can still be found there today.

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Reef Pokemon

Sun: Snaelstrom is heralded as the "Protector of the Reef", due to its almost exclusive diet of the reef destroying Toxapex.

Moon: The population of Snaelstrom has recently bounced back from the brink of extinction. They were almost wiped out for their marvelous shells and the unique coral that grows on them.

Ultra Sun: Due to its diet consisting mainly of Toxapex, Snaelstrom evolved a means to heal itself from its highly toxic spines and innards.

Ultra Moon: Under the guise of the full moon, Snaelstrom and Primarina will hold a massive ocean opera. Deep sea Pokémon far and wide gather for Primarina's voice and Snaelstrom's elegant dancing.

Final Submission

Snaelstrom, the Ecosystem Pokemon

Sun: Snealstrom creates whirlpools to stir up nutrients in the ocean, keeping the coral reef healthy and restored.

Moon: They have a symbiotic relationship with Corsola. Corsola will create homes for Snaelstrom and its prey, and in exchange Snaelstrom will defend Corsola at all costs.

Ultra Sun: Snaelstrom can create raging ocean storms to protect the reef from invaders. It will then heal any coral that were damaged in the process.

Ultra Moon: Snaelstrom are the guardians of the reef, and can clean the water by absorbing toxic pollutants. They like to feed on Toxapex.

Snaelstrom, the Shell Pokemon

Sun: Snaelstrom are commonly known as the defenders of the sea. If they see anyone polluting the water, they will come out and and attack.

Moon: In the past, Snaelstrom was revered as a deity incarnate of an ancient ocean god sent to protect the sea. Rumors stated that it carried the force of a thousand crashing waves.

Ultra Sun: Snaelstrom commonly travel in groups. If they see a Toxapex devouring Corsola, they will gang up on it mercilessly.

Ultra Moon: While usually sweet, caring creatures, Snaelstrom will commonly torture Toxapex before devouring it.

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Reef Pokémon

Sun: They carry entire ecosystems on their back. Even in death, their shells continue to provide shelter for all sorts of aquatic Pokémon.

Moon: Toxapex is its primary prey. Because of this, Corsola have formed a symbiotic relationship with Snaelstrom, maintaining its shell while also avoiding predation.

Ultra Sun: During tropical storms, it digs its feet into the ground. The currents warping its soft body have inspired all sorts of belly dances, though Snaelstrom itself is quite a clumsy dancer.

Ultra Moon: In order to help preserve their integrity, it will carefully rearrange coral reefs as it sees fit. If it becomes too focused, it may accidentally try to move smaller Pokémon around instead.

Snaelstrom, the Great Barrier Pokemon

Sun: Resistant to many kinds of venom, Snaelstrom is best known for hunting Toxapex. As a result, Snaelstrom is adored by Corsola, which cling to its fortress-like shell for protection.

Moon: Due to its tremendous size, Snaelstrom has few natural predators. When pressed to battle, it swings its body with surprising agility, slashing foes with the jagged coral that adorns its shell.

Ultra Sun: Its diet includes a substantial amount of poisonous or indigestible material. Traces of these substances can be found in Snaelstrom's magnificent coral reef.

Ultra Moon: Snaelstrom possesses tremendous poise and confidence, giving it a surreal and awesome air. Its image is highly popular with tourism agencies and with idealistic groups.

WIP

Snaelstrom, the Coral Shell Pokémon

Sun: The coral on its shell is very tough. In battle, Snealstrom moves around so that any attackers will hurt themselves on their shells.

Moon: Snaelstrom feed on pollution in the water and various toxic Pokémon. Its mucus can dissolve even the toughest of armors.

Ultra Sun: This Pokémon cares deeply for the reef it lives in. It does not take kindly to anyone who dares disturb the peace in their reef.

Ultra Moon: Snaelstrom have been fighting a losing battle against pollution. As such, there are not many coral reefs left in the world.

WIP

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Reef Pokemon

Sun: Surprisingly graceful for their size, the swaying underwater movements of this Pokemon have inspired many lively and elegant belly dances.

Moon: Snaelstorm prey on Toxapex, so their digestive system can process many natural poisons. Their mucus membrane contains unique compounds with wound-healing properties, synthesized from the poison they digest.

Ultra Sun: The coral on a Snaelstrom's shell grows to resemble the reef it lives in. They are gentle, but very protective of their homes and the Pokemon they share them with, especially Corsola.

Ultra Moon: Compounds in its mucus membrane helps it heal quickly from injuries. However, these compounds are toxic to humans, so they are rarely collected except for academic research.

Hopefully it's alright that my "the __ Pokemon" is the same as another person, it just seems so fitting, and I can't think of anything to change it to.

WIP

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Pokémon

Sun: Snaelstrom lurk in coral reefs near the ocean floor, blending in perfectly with their surroundings. They rarely move due to the intense water pressure down there.

Moon: Snaelstrom are friendly to the Corsola that often mistake them for others of their kind, granting them protection from Toxapex.

Ultra Sun: Research is currently underway on this Pokémon, for Snaelstrom somehow regenerates faster than normal when poisoned.

Ultra Moon: Despite their lanky figures, Snaelstrom are surprisingly talented dancers. They often compete with Primarina in a dance-off, dazzling spectators.

Final Submission

Snaelstrom, the Tide Turner Pokemon

Sun: These Pokémon seem to have developed a motherly relationship with Corsola. They will use the coral on their backs to shield them from predators.

Shell Pokemon: I do believe this is Blastoises title in japanese. I felt like having them the same would be alright (we've got two flame pokemon after all) and...eh.
Sun: I could easily see Snaelstrom as protectors of not only corsola, but the entire ocean in a way. And them being very overprotective of what they protect...
Moon: Triton snails. TRITON snails. TRITON--
Ultra Sun: I can see Snaelstrom as a very violent protector: Loving of those they protect, and no mercy to those who harm such protectee's.
Ultra Moon: Again. Merciless overprotecters. And predators of Toxapex of course.

Snaelstrom, the Barrier Reef Pokemon

Moon: The population of Snaelstrom has recently bounced back from the brink of extinction. They were almost wiped out for their marvelous shells and the rare coral that grows on them.

Ultra Sun: Snaelstrom evolved the ability to heal from toxins, so it can feed on Toxapex efficiently. In response to that, Toxapex evolved the ability to regenerate lost limbs.

Ultra Moon: Snaelstrom's diamond hard shell is decorated in pink coral. Several Pokémon use the mini reef on its back as nurseries, much to the delight of the motherly Snaelstrom.

Most of the dex entries in some way reference Toxapex and the funny predator-prey relationship they have.

Sun goes into the Guardian of the sea vibe that Snaelstrom displays while showing its dedication to feeding on Toxapex. It also teases a nice relationship they have with Corsola.

Moon talks about is beautiful shell that nearly caused it to be driven to extinction from the greed of man, referencing real life animals that are hunted for shells or horns.

US takes another jab at the Toxapex feeding relation, this time talking about how they are in an evolutionary arms race against each other, which can be common amongst predator prey relationships that are as exclusive as this. Also its fun to think that Toxapex becomes the wall it is because of Snael eating it all day.

UM finally closes in on the shell and the reef it sustains on its back, saying that young Pokemon actually grow and live there. Coral reefs are common nurseries for animals in real life, and it really captures the "soccer mom" vibe pip, the creator of Snaelstrom's art, said he gets from the design.

I wanted to get across both Snaelstrom's threatening and bulky side, as well as the affectionate and caring personality that was reflected in some of Pipotchi's concept art. It is commonly the case where Pokedex entries are 'symmetrical' and use multiple terms and ideas from one entry to fuel the opposite entry of a sequel game, which is why I've mentioned the title "Lord of the Reefs" twice as well as its mucus membrane.

Snaelstrom, the Coral Reef Pokemon

Sun: If cared for badly, Snaelstrom's coral will begin to decay and fall off. This process is irreversible, so some trainers will buy fake coral and glue it onto Snaelstrom.

Moon: This Pokemon's many dances are notable for their undulating body rolls, as well as for having surprisingly fast spins.

Snaelstrom I wanted to focus on some of the movepool notes, and push the idea that they are both beautiful, and competitive.

The Sun entry is a bit of a downer to start off with, but I like it for that reason - a brief reminder that Gen7 dexes are pretty darn cruel at times. And I can totally see trainers literally taking a hot glue gun and sticking stuff on.

In Moon, I wanted to hark back to the 'dancer' flavour that is embedded within the movepool, in particular with Rapid Spin being one of those moves which is hard to justify. Belly Dancing might seem a zany choice for the dancing style - I can also see something like Ballroom Dancing (though perhaps not, given how fast some Strictly dances are...) - but with Snaelstrom's snail-like body, it felt a viable choice. It also gave me an excuse to use the word 'undulating'.

Hopping across to Ultra Sun, we have a bit more on the notion of Snaelstrom's aesthetics. Poisonous makeup isn't actually that new of an idea - we need only look back to the Victorian era and the generous amount of lead in cosmetics at the time - and I wanted to play to the idea of Snaelstrom vs Toxapex that's common to many dex entries.

Finishing up (and because I like it when S-US or M-UM dex entries are kind of linked a tiny bit), I've doubled down on the dancing idea in the Ultra Moon entry, partnering Snaelstrom against fellow ocean diva Primarina.

Final Submission

Snaelstrom, the Coral Reef Pokémon

Sun: This Pokémon explores the ocean for Water-type Pokémon living in bad habitats and houses them in it's reef. It then transports them to a new location that is the perfect habitat for that Pokémon.

Moon: Thousands of Water-type Pokémon reside on it's back: the older, the better. As it avoids harming the environment, it heads to the beach instead to feed on fallen berries.

Ultra Sun: Although the Pokémon world's coral reefs are in danger, this Pokémon and it's coral reef is not. In fact, you may never know if a coral reef that you encounter could actually be a Snaelstrom!

Ultra Moon: A perfect example of a moving reef. In Alola, Wishiwashi schools sometimes use a Snaelstrom as a meeting place, though they are forced to relocate when the Snaelstrom moves.
