Stoplight Snowman!
The defensive form is the red light, which aims to "Stop" the opponent's progress, while the offensive form is the green light, which will "Go" all out with its blazing speed!

The "Stop" form takes inspiration from the iconic Berlin "Ampelmännchen" stoplight. Hiding behind its hat, scarf, and sunglasses, its "incognito" personality serves as a contrast to the energetic "Go" form.

The Snowman theme comes through in its carrot-like nose and the three buttons on its coat, which also double as a literal stoplight. It serves as a way to highlight the mon's Ice-type
1000007898.png
flavor, which becomes more apparent in the cooler-colored "Go" form which gains snow goggles and skis.

As a bit of trivia: Know that in real life, cooler-colored flames are significantly stronger than red flames!

Wolf in sheep's clothing --> werewolf is close to the end of production. Both forms now wield a bell for their signature attack, inspired by bellwether sheeps. I'm satisfied with the progression of both designs and this'll probably be my last WIP before final sub. Just some tinkering left to do, mainly with the Ice-type form. We're in the home stretch now!

Spacebot with planetoid and comet forms. With this one, my goal was to stay true to how Meloetta changes forms, where each design is distinct, yet both feel like the same 'mon. I also wanted it to feel like neither overshadowed one another, and that the reverse transformation made sense, too.

This fella underwent some big updates on Discord since posting my WIPs to the forum, especially the ice form. I want to thank everybody there for helping me to not stray too far from the original concept, haha.

The crest on the steel form is a very stylized symbol for Ceres. Likewise, the crest of the ice form is a very stylized symbol for Pluto. Thank you Golurkyourself for the idea!

A solar system princess! The transformation is a star --> supernova --> star reforms --> supernova occurs again and so on. When a star dies it can cause a supernova explosion. The material made by the explosion can then make a star! So it can swap back and forth via concept.

She is also taking inspiration from magical girls. This is a magical girl transformation. Somewhat of an ultimate madoka transformation.

Thank you everyone who helped me make this!

Coming off my previous post, I polished up the designs some more, mainly the Ice-type forme. We're getting close to the finish line--I expect I'll have a final sub ready by my next post!

HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS BETTER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Also the first form has four legs and the second gas six. Making sure it isn't a mistake.

Hey, thanks for the concern! This is by design--the extra legs are tucked under the metal plating on the first forme.

Where to tonight? McDonalds? Jack in the Box? Well, whatever your choice, just don't expect it to be hot and fresh.

This take on CAP36 focuses hugely on microwaves, their innate inconsistent heating, fast food, and jack in the boxes. The dichotomy of the two forms is a "nervous" microwave vessel, trying to hold back this icy entity, before it breaks free with CAP Song, a Fire-type Sound move. Microwave "dings" are super iconic and it fits the move perfectly.

Fire/Steel (Aria Form)

In terms of being a Fire/Steel type, I believe microwaves fit this premise super well just by themselves. They're metal boxes that emit electromagnetic energy that is designed to "warm" food, which is a naturally very Fire-type trait. As a defensive form, the focus is the microwave itself; it's blocky, angular, and sturdy, relatively speaking. However I think if this form gets any power or Speed, its volatile personality should help justify it more readily. It has a slight animalistic, quadruped look as well.

Fire/Ice (Pirouette Form)

This form is designed to be the volatile, combative, inner spirit inside of CAP 36a that is freed when the microwave "dings". It's fast, nimble, takes the microwave off of the ground with it, and dishes out a ton of pain. I envision that it can weaponize the microwave as a sort of armored tail.

My take on CAP 36p is based hugely on the Jack in the Box toy, known famously for being a box that explodes open with the "Jack" inside, while also taking some tabs from fast food mascots such as (fittingly) Jack in the Box's Jack and McDonalds' Ronald McDonald. It has a fiery exterior, representing the electromagnetic fiery waves that the original form was emitting, and an icy core (the entity) that you often get as a result of microwaves being very inconsistent in heating their food. The microwave form is similarly sized to ensure there isn't a power imbalance between the two, but most of the focus is on the ice entity itself, which opponents would be targeting as a Fire/Ice type.

I believe the forms intuitively switch between each other too, which is an undersold aspect of Relic Song, as if you see your food is cold, you're obviously gonna want to stick it back in there.

While the concept is a bit abstract, I really hope that the personality and inspirations shine through!

Sorry for the criticism but the beraly open mouth and smaller eyes make it look too derpy, and the cream being that high and thick on the bottom and Swindelly it's just too goofy.
And why does the first form hide a pair of legs? Like, what reason?

Finalized the base form with a ton of feedback from Discord - notably, I realized that despite having outlets for heated air, it doesn't have any means of intake, so I changed its nostrils to fill that need. I think the art for it should be good as finalized now!

I also now have a solid design for the sweeper form, which is now leaner and fluffier with the vents turned into jet boosters because the stats are leaning towards something ridiculously fast. I also added ice on its lower limbs to show that in its "cooling" mode, it draws heat towards its interior and away from its extremities, making its skin so cold that hoar frost forms where its metal armor has fallen off and ice now coats its claws. This effect will hopefully be more clearly indicated once I get around to the coloring stage!

veered a little from where we originally started but i think i like this more; still not conf on the second form, esp the colors. the first is a sea lion-rocket launching; the second is it crashing into the ocean. would really really appreciate feedback especially on the second form, thank you so much!

When the dust settles...

The only thing left will be my submission for CAP 36! It's based on the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Specifically, CAP 36a (Ankylosaurus) is based on the meteor that struck the planet, while 36p (Therizinosaurus) is based on the mass winter caused by the meteorites debris. What appears to be a head on both forms is actually a facade, with the creatures real face being the blue core that's revealed in its 36p forme. It crash lands onto planets, using its meteorite shell to protect it. After the impact, the shell is destroyed, and it loses a lot of the heat that it uses as energy. Thus, it begins absorbing the heat from the surrounding vicinity into its core, to the point that it freezes its own extremities in the process.

Main Basis - The Chicxulub Impactor
  • Meteorite that wiped the dinosaurs off the earth, both through its collision with the earth and the mass winter caused by it sending debris up into the air.
  • Meteorites in general are seen as some of the most terrifying forces of nature, and are typically depicted in media as spectacular, terrifying or even apocalyptic
Auxillary Basis - Alien Invaders
  • The trope of Alien invasions shares a lot of ideas in common with how we usually view Meteorites in media:
    • Objects and/or beings non-native to earth and invasive
    • Violent and Destructive forces of nature, often far surpassing the power that the inhabitants of a planet have
    • Beyond reasoning or communication
  • Thus, I decided to include the trope of Alien Invaders disguising as the inhabitants of a planet - in this case, resembling late Cretaceous dinosaurs like Ankylosaurus and Therizinosaurus
Auxillary Basis - The Demon Core
  • Similar to the previous basis, the effects of nuclear disasters and accidents, such as what happened with the Demon Core, are seen as apocalyptic and monstrous forces of nature: invasive, powerful, destructive and beyond reasoning.
  • Similar to meteor strikes, nuclear weapons are capable of producing enormous amounts of energy and impacting the surrounding area in ways that harm the native life.

Fire/Steel - Meteors are commonly filled with many different types of ores and metals, and generate a lot of heat upon entering the atmosphere.

Fire/Ice - The meteor that marked the end of the dinosaurs did not simply kill them all with its impact. Rather, the debris launched into the atmosphere by its impact made it so the suns light and heat were unable to pass the atmosphere, causing the planet to freeze over and killing the plants, which killed many of the herbivores, and thus many of the carnivores as well. Along with this, warmth and cold are merely presence and absence of energy. When something absorbs heat, its taking that energy away from something else, causing that object to cool.

CAP Song (Special, Fire Type Sound Move) - As meteors fall through the atmosphere at speeds faster than sound, they compress pressure waves together, due to the waves inability to move out of each others way quickly enough. The sudden increase in pressure from all of these pressure waves combining into a single shockwave creates both heat and a sonic boom.
Transformation -
When 36 uses CAP Song, it crashes into the ground like a meteor. In 36a, this causes its shell to be blown apart, transforming it into 36p. When 36p uses this move, the extreme heat from its body melts the surrounding earth as it crashes, causing ore to melt and form around its body once again.

No Guard - Between the amount of damage that meteors cause to themselves upon entry and impact, and the common belief that dinosaurs and other dinosaur-like creatures are "thoughtless killing machines", No Guard makes sense for a creature based on the two.

Thunder (if added) - When a gas is heated enough, its atoms ionize, meaning the electrons are stripped from the atom and the substance becomes plasma, the same state of matter that lightning is made out of.

Design progression images:
When I saw Fire/Ice as one of the typings for CAP 36, I knew I wanted to do something specific.

Fire/Ice is a typing you see frequently in fakemon. Like Normal/Ghost or Bug/Dragon, this typing uses two types that oppose each other. This self-contradictory combination makes for an interesting typing, but it also creates design complications.

A number of fakemon that use Fire/Ice tend to create a design that highlights how self-contradictory the typing is. Those sorts of designs come across to me as misplaced; instead of the design serving the typing, the typing served the design. Because of this, I didn't want to create a design from that angle.

Instead, I tried to think about "magic bullet" concepts. To me, a magic bullet concept was one that integrated Fire and Ice in a seamless and unforced manner. The additional constraint of Fire/Steel being our other typing helped me narrow in on an appropriate concept.

At this point, I saw that people were sharing initial WIPs in this thread. Given the framework status of CAP 36 + what stats we think CAP 36 needed, I noticed we were getting a number of cool designs. Knowing this, I took the counterprogramming approach: If you're seeing a lot of cool designs in the thread, why not instead change up the pace with a silly fella?

I don't remember how, but the inspiration behind this design manifested in my head all at once. I wish I could say that the concept for my design was inspired by common themes you'd see in art social media, but I can't really pin it down to any particular artist or piece.

Initially, I just wanted to get the idea out there—I wasn't planning to develop it into a fully-fledged design. Judging by the reception in this thread + Discord, though, a lot of people seem to like it! What followed was a month of "this is my life meow" as I found myself tackling this design for real.

Note: This section is meant primarily as a personal writeup, so you don't need to read it to understand the design. That said, feel free to read on—you might discover some trivia about the design process along the way that interests you!

Both formes:
  • aesthetic:
    • designed to be charming and silly but not to gimmicky or kitschy levels
    • use of crayon-style brush emphasizes charm factor
  • shape language:
    • diamonds tie both formes together ("slits" on Forme 1, sprinkles and texture on Forme 2)
    • round shapes are inspired by cartoon depictions of cats (e.g. Pusheen)
    • rounded rectangles are inspired by the shape of baked goods
    • swirly shapes are designed to be whimsical
    • swirly shapes tie both formes together (engravings + smoke on Forme 1, ice cream swirl on Forme 2)
  • face:
    • designed to be simple and cute on a small screen
    • eyes are a visual pun on being pie-eyed
    • wedge shapes next to eyes evoke party poppers
    • ears look like strawberries/gumdrops seen on the top of a cake
  • size:
    • designed to be big enough that a small child could take a ride on it (see supporting art)
    • intended to be bigger than the largest housecat but smaller than an adult tiger
Forme 1:
  • colors:
    • didn't want to repeat the same red + silver combo as used by fellow Fire/Steel-type Heatran
    • replaced the silver of modern steel appliances with the darker color of old-fashioned cast-iron cookware
  • lighting:
    • emphasizes radiant heat
  • pose:
    • inspired by funny pictures of cats taking big steps (example)
    • forward motion -> stepping toward the opponent -> No Guard
  • body:
    • diamond shapes on oven resembles the on the front of a knight's helm
    • engravings are inspired by xiangyun
    • engravings are inspired by ornate, old-fashioned bread boxes (example)
    • hood shape inspired by old-fashioned pizza ovens
    • round and rectangular shape inspired by the concept of a "catloaf"
    • smoke coming out of the oven resembles a plumed knight's helm
    • stripes resemble flames + patterns seen in some historical objects (1, 2)
    • whiskers are inspired by the toothpick test, as used in baking (example)
Forme 2:
  • colors:
    • emphasizes ice cream elements while deterring Fairy as a typing
  • body:
    • extra legs = extra fast (and are inspired by a certain well-known Studio Ghibli movie)
    • "layers" on body resemble layers in ice cream cakes (example)
    • sprinkles resemble whiskers + freckles
    • stripes resemble tiger stripes + the layers on a cake
  • swirl:
    • big ice cream swirl draws your attention towards new element
    • didn't use "scoop" shape to represent ice cream since the "swirl" shape was more iconic
      • bonus: resembles whipped cream, which people also put on cakes
    • loosely resembles fancy hats such as crowns and turbans, which are associated with a high Special Attack stat (e.g. Slowking)
      • bonus: there might be an accidental "brain freeze" pun in there
    • bonus pun: "icing" and "frosting" are things you put on a cake, and "ice" and "frost" are Ice-related concepts

Hey, I appreciate your feedback. The changes I made to the face were in response to feedback I received from some other members of CAP over the course of developing this design. As for how I landed on other design elements, the section labeled "full design breakdown" in this post might illuminate some decisions. Let me know if this helps.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT

For this CAP, since two design submissions are required, we are going to have a 72-hour period for art submissions after the stats are decided. Normally we have a 48 hour period for artists to tweak their designs or make supporting art after seeing the final stat spread. But with TWO designs to finalize, we are adding time for artists this CAP.

Right now, it looks like stats will finish Friday (US time), and the Art submission deadline will be Monday sometime. This is not a guarantee, because it will be based on when the stats complete. But just to give artists a heads up that you will have 72 hours after stats to make your final submissions.

We're down to the wire - just a little time left to go! I added some extra armor to the Fire/Steel form which should hopefully sell its defensive nature better, and I was happy with the way the lineart for the Fire/Ice form looked after some refinement so I slapped on some color. I originally tried for a more bluish purple to the main body portions but ultimately I think this purple and light red-pink palette helps tie the red and blue elements together better. I'm tempted to give the Fire/Steel form a purplish hue as well to help connect the two forms, but the colors I picked for it look good as it is; I'll give that color change a test later to see how it looks. But otherwise, a big thanks to Pipotchi, Sunfished, and Yokaiju for their feedback and suggestions, and expect the final sub for this thing in my next post!

Wanted to final sub just in case irl gets busy.
Otherwise gonna work on supporting material and will add ‘em to this post if I make it before deadline.

Will add some comments later too, but for now ill just say best of luck everyone!

Edit: Still working on supporting material but I’m certain I won’t make it so … what you see is all you get here sorry.

Edit2: Halted work on the extra stuff for the foreseeable future. Need an art break so bad.
