CAP 38 - Art Submissions

WIP
smogon%20cap38%20color1.png

I had a different idea at first in case Neutralizing Gas won, but that ability got nuked in the first round of polls so I had to think of something else, especially after Flower Veil took the proverbial crown. This is very much a first-draft design that will definitely need to be heavily revisited but I think I've got at least the concept and especially the color palette down - it just needs to not look so rushed and not just due to it being colored over a half-hour sketch.

It's a basil-isk, by the way! Apparently, the basil herb was said a few times back in the day to be an antidote for the venom of the basilisk itself, so I thought I'd play around with that for a Grass/Poison-type. The Mega Meganium-style neck petals are based on basil florets, though last I checked, I don't think these structures have eyes!

Sticking with the shroom theme, just tried to clean up my original design and make everything intentional and exaggerate the shapes.

im thinking the dark body's a little plain, but im already approaching the limit of detail so we'll see.
I'm personally pretty strongly seeing a Rock-type (and non-Grass-type) in this design, especially with the rock for a head, rock neck ruff, and rock leg flanges. The red crystals don't help. I think making the off-white portions a much less rock-like colour, such as green, would help prevent this if you don't want to flip the ruff and flange designs towards your first WIP, where I don't see those as rocks.

While I could've kept going with the bunny design and added more flower imagery for Flower Veil, I felt like it wasn't working, and that a design based more around a flower would work better.

This new design is based on the Jimsonweed, otherwise known as Devil's Trumpet, a poisonous flower. So I figured how about a devil playing the trumpet? Got an imp like creature playing a flower trumpet. This is obviously very rough, and now that I'm posting this I realized I fucked up the arms and hands, but I feel like this concept still works pretty well for a Grass/Poison with Flower Veil, and I bet if I refined it, it might be something. Idk if I'll get to that point, but we'll see!

Slightly changed design I'll probably do one last one where I cut out the top and edit the image to be less large and the color original is an attached thumbnail and I will probably do the colors and make one last post before I can say for sure that it will be done

wisteria cap 5.jpg

In the newest version, the wisteria is more of an entity itself and is showing its control over the tree with the claw over the head. The design is still pretty busy but hopefully it will clean up with a final render. Im kinda assuming the stats for this mon will be huge hence Im trying to make this look a bit legendary or mythical

Final Submission
Spider Lily Tailed Viper Cobra.jpg

And there you have it, my variant of Cap 38, based of the Spider-tailed Horned Viper and Red Spider Lilies.
Supporting Material
Dudes eating an applin and yes it does now technically have retractable teeth, a expression with a closed mouth an open mouth resembling part of the flower and a trap mode using the tail instead of the face and it using sludge bomb but yeah I didn't know how to do the supporting material part so it's just an attached thumbnail

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

Here's a princess "locked away" in a tower by a sinister dragon. I imagine the two of them working together to lure in heroic adventurers so they can have them for lunch. I dunno for sure if this is smth I wanna finish but hey, I wanted to give Flower Veil a shot at least.

Final Submission

CAP 38 3 Submission.png

Supporting Material
So, this is my third and final design that I'm going with.
The design for CAP 38 here is primarily based around Pitcher Plants now, its particular crimson and pink colouration coming from members of the Sarraceniaceae family. This is mixed in with a myriad of various inspirations, like gun-fighting duellists, mortars, bombs, as well as the Impatiens genus of flowers; known for their seeds having an explosive effect when touched. I believed that having this aesthetic would allow some easy wiggle room for any Fire move coverage, or something like Focus Blast or whatnot if that ends up being the angle.
Very similar to my original concept overall, though having to have pivoted from the mushroom inspirations to plant and flower-based ones due to Flower Veil's inclusion.
Hopefully I've done a good enough job though, and I hope the supporting reference sheet I cooked up is equally helpful.

Flower Knight. Based on the Elephant Foot Yam. (Both of them). The Whitespot Giant Arum flower produces foul smelling mucus and is toxic when eaten raw, particularly for certain mammals. I liked the idea of making a sort of knight with multi-purpose thorny vine arms. One that it spews toxic mucus from like a hose, and one coiled into the shape of a shield! I'll expand upon its personality and traits in the ref sheet, coming soon.

toxic cauliflower bully who spews HATE and VITRIOL but is actually just a little guy putting on a tough front
the HATE spewed poisoned the little guy's eye....a cautionary tale against being a cauliflower (we lowk chill with the bullying thing its just the cauliflower which is a problem)

I've decided to stay with the hag/witch bat for my eventual final submission which I hope to complete soon. I've tweaked this concept design to make it more coherent such as simplifying the colors, root-like features (the leg area mainly), and leafy wings/cloak. I've also added some new things like markings and the little manchineel-esque poison apples that now hang on the collar and fit both the witchy theme and if the mon ends up getting Apple Acid. I intend on including this concept drawing within my eventual supporting material if I'm allowed to do so but that's also if I figure out how to properly attach such to my eventual final submission as I'm still trying to figure out all the forum post magic.

One complete transformation and weeks of trial and error later, I think this is what I'm going to settle on as my design. It's the same scorpion/manchineel tree but now with a mix of life/death symbolism. It's an ancient tree that's lived a long time that's also a poisonous apple tree of death. The flowers resemble a skull/crossbones, and the apple now resembles the iconic Poison Apple.

Final render coming soon(TM)

lamia.png

I kinda combined 2 fantasy monsters in Alraunes and Lamias into this. It's basically a spoiled empress/aristocrat who has such a toxic attitude towards anything that isn't them that it fuels its own toxicity. I saw a lot of debuff talk and what better way to lower your self worth than by interacting with such a foul creature?

Her floral crown is loosely modelled after lillies, while her "inner dress" is modelled after an angel's trumpet. By giving her a more serpentine lower body, she gets a method of locomotion most plant types don't have, and it allows her to ambush from high ground or below ground to spring up on her victims. Tried to make a sort of all-rounder, but particularly looking at a way to showcase speed, hence the agile lower snake body.

Obviously there's still some cleaning up to do, and i may still tinker with the actual petal arrangements yet and color scheme, but im satisfied with this being about 80% of the way there.

I was initially worried about comparisons to florges or gardevoir, as the original sketches had viney legs, but swapping the lower body tendrils with a singular coiling thorny root was the better call, and makes it stand out from the rest of the floral poke pals. Tried to go for a mix of beauty and danger.

Also, flower petals made me more mad to draw than i thought they would. In any case, hope to get this one finished soon! Worst case scenario, I work on something else lol.

Malebrije_WIP_2.JPG

Long-time listener, first-time caller! I've been working on this freak since Tuesday and I take a while to finish my art, so I got antsy and felt like I had to post proof I was cooking something for this. I'm REALLY dang proud of the concept, but what matters to me is making sure I get the aesthetic and colors right. So here are some sketches for now!

This is Malebrije (my personal codename for this design at least), and it's based primarily off of the Mari Lwyd (freaky Welsh flower-crowned horse skull lady who rap battles you to raid your pantry) and Alebrijes! It's also got a Dia de los Muertos vibe going on, which was inspired by DrifblooomCF's approach to the challenge (awesome design BTW). My main thought was that since our current Flower Veil Pokemon (Florges line and Comfey) are flower COLLECTORS rather than flowers themselves, CAP 38 should also be a collector of petals despite already being a plant themselves. So for this design, their Grass-Typing comes from their body of entirely wooden carvings (sourced from the bark of a horse chestnut tree, which is toxic), and their Flower Veil comes from offerings made to them in the form of marigold wreaths!

The Poison-Type is because I've also based them on the Black Rider, or Horseman of Famine. Their colors are going to be orange, black and that dull green you often see in X-rays (with some purple too) for the aposematism angle, and I'm considering adding a small set of scales like the Black Rider carries too (fitting considering their likely hatred for the Equilibra matchup). For now though, it's a manchineel lure extending from their horn (as insurance for Apple Acid's inclusion). The Moveset was where most of difficulties came from for me, but I'm satisfied with the mental image of a scary wooden horse lady unhinging its noxious jaw to vomit a space laser or even Mystical Fire if that gets confirmed.

Their hypothetical Prevo is also one of those wooden snake toys because I thought it looked funny. I'd like to think even the final form lacks legs and simply cruises on streams of toxic marigold petals.

I have a marine biology conference coming up alongside a big ol' poster to draw about horseshoe crabs and science communication, so hopefully we've got some more time before the deadline. But win or lose, finished or not, I'm just happy to be here contributing something for my beloved Poison-Type :)
