CAP 38 - Art Submissions

WIP

hi i'm excited abt the extension and when i saw the type+stats+moves had a neat idea i wanted to iterate some designs for!

here's some kind of earthly astronaut!

plants can be parasitic and actively harmful to other flora, with these kinds of plant a lot of times being pale with no chlorophyll, a real poison-y virus-y sorta deal. the flowers here specifically resemble the parasitic American Indian pipe plant and also lilies of the valley, which aren't parasitic but of course are known for being poisonous.
this whole idea pairs well of course with the whole trope of freaky aliens taking over or impersonating daring space explorers, think ridley scott or The Thing or amongus. like a lot of pokemon theres some sort of symbiosis at play here, or likely a more dangerous combination.

something with the bulk of a faux spacesuit but seems fast and floaty with those flowery jetpacks... i quite like that direction for the given stats! the thrusters also serve as trope-y alien ray guns, which works super well with the giant special attack and some of the special moves like sludge bomb, flamethrower and ESPECIALLY Meteor Beam, having a fake space theme and all :]

I call this an Oleander Skunk:

Oleander-Skunk-25.jpg

The essence of the design is a skunk that smells good instead of bad, but the flowers that smell good are actually poisonous. I decided to use Oleander flowers because they are one of the most toxic ornamental flowers in the world, and they have a distinctive look. Also, since many people are unaware of the toxicity of oleanders (unlike nightshade, etc) it fits the personality of this pokemon, which I wanted it to be more nice and friendly.

Many of the traditional typing clues for Poison are heavily biased to "badass" or "dangerous" designs, and from the outset I wanted to make a design that runs counter to that. Ultimately that led me to this counterintuitive interpretation, that turns upside down many traditional assumptions and design clues associated with skunks and flowers and poison and all that.

I imagine this as a friendly pokemon, something like its pre-evolution would be found in the grass on Route 1 or whatever. It plays in the grass and likes to approach others (unlike real life skunks that prefer to ward others away) and enjoys spreading its pleasant aroma, even though it is toxic to almost everyone else.

Although I call it a Skunk, and I obviously used skunks for reference, this design also has a lot of influence from Striped Polecats (also called Zorillas), which are often mistaken for skunks, because of their look and their smelly spray. Because I knew this mon would be very fast, I used polecats for reference since they are leaner and quicker than most skunks. I also referenced squirrels a little bit for morphology and posing, to help give it a "faster" look.

I hope you like it!

Mountain Laurel jellyfish!

Upon seeing the typing, Ability and stat spreads of CAP 38, I had a feeling of wanting this mon to be somewhat alien (dunno why tbh, probably cuz I was thinking of Eternatus, who knows :V). So I was browsing for poisonous plants/flowers for inspiration. Eventually, I found one that caught my attention: the mountain laurel. Its spherical appearance and its stamen reminds me of the shape of a jellyfish.
Initially, I have 2 versions for this idea: the first one is a land anemone/mountain laurel fusion that uses the petal as a wedding dress, with the center of the flower being a wedding ring (land anemone flower central part looks like rings!) But it soon dawned upon me that the idea was pretty difficult for me to realize, so I decided to stick with this one.
The stingers and the "eye" part is based on darts and dartboards (mountain laurel can shoot out its pollen with its spring-like stamen, hence the dart stingers). I didn't want the dome part to be opaque since it will obscure the eye part so I made it transparent to emulate the appearance of jellyfish.
And with some refinement, here we are! My CAP 38 submission!!

Big thanks to friends in CAP Discord for giving me inspirations and motivation to finish creating jellyfish!!!
