CAP 5 CAP 5 - Part 3 (Secondary Typing Poll 1)

1. Fighting
2. Ghost

Rock/Fighting would be an interesting combination. Makes me think of a golem; more a humanoid one than the 1st-gen pokemon which is more a boulder. I've got some ideas as to design I think would be pretty neat.

Figured this would be helpful. Copied from Bulbapedia's average stats for each type:

Choice 1: Steel
Choice 2: Fighting

An aggressive Natured Steel Fighting type wouldn't be too hard to design, but would be awesome to break the aggron / Probopass mould. Fighting types can be very varied, from bulkier 'mons like Hariyama and Machamp, to More aggressive models like Lucario. Lucario is already Steel / Fighting, so I will be interested to see what the Smogon Community can do with that one.

So as you can see, Fighting has the 2nd highest average attack stat in the game, and the second lowest special attack, after Bug. It has pretty average speed, so makes a pretty good stereotype combo with Rock.

Bug has the Lowest special attack in the game, and the joint 3rd lowest speed, despite many Bugs being Bug/Flying, and Flying having the 2nd highest speed. Clearly, Bug is a good physical and slow stereotype combo with Rock.

As a result of these averages I'm changing my vote as Fighting fits the slow and physical stereotype much better than Ghost.

1. Bug
2. Grass

They have the least weaknesses - I especially don't want a 4x eq weakness or it is unusable.

Rock/Bug has few resistances and both types are usually physical so a fast special sweeper could do good. Plus bug has good type coverage when combined with rock.

1. No secondary typing
2. Normal

While perusing the previous posts, I ran along something that sums up my thoughts on why I would vote this way, so instead of reiterating and rewording, here it is:

I do not want any secondary type. If we have to have a secondary type, I do not want it to overshadow Rock as the primary attacking STAB. If we go Fighting or Flying, I fear it will do just that. So I went with Normal, because it won't steal limelight from Rock, while still being useful in certain situations.

Choice 1: Steel

Steel would be a very nice backup STAB IMO and provide some extremely useful resistances (Ice, Dark, Ghost, Bug, Psychic and Dragon. Also 4x to Normal and Flying.), some people think that the 4x weakness to Fighting and Ground will be crippling, that would be true for a slow physical tank like Aggron or Protopass but for this Pokemon is a non issue given that it will almost certainly have low Physical survivability (so be KOd by most 2x weak Ground and Fight attacks anyway) and high speed.

Also Steel STAB has little danger of overshadowing rock given its notoriously poor coverage.

Choice 2: Fighting

Meh... I chose this as my second choice because:
1. I think it sould have a dual type, I know mono-rock is rare but it would be cool to have something a bit more unusual.
2. It has the same stereotype as Rock, they are both relatively slow Physical sweepers on the whole.

Also to anyone who sais something like:
"but we have a fast/special steel, Jirachi/Lucario"

Just because there are exceptions does NOT change the stereotype. If there was a rock type with 120 SpA and 110 Spe the stereotype of Rocks would be pretty much the same (maybe unless that Rock was very popular).

If we want this to be a successful Sp Sweeper we need to give it a new STAB and/or a secondary STAB. Power Gem is not enough.

I'm going to stop the poll here. However, the next poll probably won't be up until tomorrow, as I don't have computer access until tomorrow. At the moment, I'm using my Wii to type this. To recap: This poll is closed.

Figured this would be helpful. Copied from Bulbapedia's average stats for each type:

*big list*

The problem with that lists (the ones you posted, and the one that Gothic Togekiss compiled for HP) is that they are not normalized. In order to compare the stat distribution we should have to compare relative values, not absolute values like the ones posted. As you can see, in most stats, Dragons are number 1 or 2. But that only means that the average BST of dragons is very high, so of course, each of their stats will be high, too. On the other hand, bugs are usually at the bottom on all lists, because Bugs BST is usually very low, so their stats can't be that high.

However, if we normalized the stats to a cetain BST, then YES, we could compare the stat distribution of all types equally. Bugs may not have great attack stats, but it is usually one of their highest stats. Also, Dragons may have a pretty high average speed, but among their stats, it isn't usually the most prominent one.

Just saying.

Wow, people really need to learn to read, and get votes in faster. By a strange turn of events I have computer access until about 9:50 EST. I'll attempt to count the votes now, but more likely they'll be up tomorrow as said earlier.

Wow, people really need to learn to read
To be fair, It's a voting thread. Most of the time theres no need to read "Electric, Normal, Psychic" for 15 minutes. Maybe next time it could go in the first post...?

This is a list of pokemon stat tendencies by type. The list of pokemon was taken from the Smogon analysis page (including Pikachu, Porygon2, etc., excluding Arceus). Base stat totals were normalized to a total of 1200 and then averaged. When reading this table, remember that 200 represents an average stat.

It makes it so that the highest or lowest stat of one type can be compared to another type on equal terms.

Thanks for this Chrono!

Rock 20 180 220 298 157 220 125 1200

Those are the above average stats for Rock. Apparently, we have to give it lowish SDef, but can boost HP.
