CAP 8 CAP 8 - Part 15a - Sprite Submissions

I have a deep feeling its going to come down to Wyverii and Aragorn again...

It's certainly possible. However, we haven't seen KoA's yet, and Doug's shouldn't be skipped over so easily either.

That's assuming Zantimonius or someone doesn't pop out of nowhere at the end with a masterpiece again.

Backs are done. I think i'll need to add an extra layer of shading for the heads on the back or deepen the shades slightly since it looks to bright at the back in my opinion. I like how the clouds and tail came out though. Maybe the necks need shifting and changed. Very difficult this one.

I think your front sprites are pretty close to perfect.

The necks on the back view look a bit too awkward.
Maybe just fore go the lightning-bolt neck for the back view?

Finished what I believe to be the last of the problems. I will go on to finish the shiny and hopefully the backsprite soon.

The head on the right looks pretty squished on and you can barely see its neck. Other than that it has great pose.

Also, the neck on the right looks like a baby Zapdos. The mouth ruins the dragon like features imo. The left head needs to be slightly bigger to.

You don't necessarily need to get rid of the lightning bolt neck, just make it so that it is angled more away from the user (or towards). It would decrease the awkwardness of the lightning neck, but still keep the feel. Make them more like the head on the far right.

That was my intent. ;P I'm a fair spriter, and have been dying to enter a submission, although that will only happen if I get my laptop running within the next few days.

Does anyone know how long the sprite submissions are usually open for? I'm asking because movepool and such haven't even begun to be finalized, and I would assume that sprites are one of the last things voted on. I'm just hoping that submissions don't close before say...Friday.

AgentLym - Someone else mentioned it, but perhaps you didn't realize it wasn't just a suggestion -- your back sprite is ILLEGAL, and cannot be accepted for this competition. Back sprites cannot cross the sides or top of the 80x80 frame. They can only be cropped by the bottom. Change your back sprite pose to accommodate this limitation.

The submissions will be closed when the Complete Movepool Submissions begins, which is on pace to be about 2 to 3 days. Please try to get your submissions in on time, marked with a Final Submission!

Might as well show my progress thus far.

Got the pose and shading done, all I really need to finalize on it is the palette, (I'm using dummy colors) and the outline. Came out quite well and has a more battle ready look than the initial pose.

I'm beyond pissed right now because of this sprite. Somehow the paint file randomly jpged up on me right when I finished the shading on this. So I basically have to restructure the fucker, as evidenced by the blurred pixels at the corner. The worst part was that I saved as png format and yet the canvas still pixellated on me, it makes no sense why that would happen.

i really like the front sprite, it looks the most like the artwork

Update on my sprites before I go to sleepland.

Overall, not much else to do aside from palette tinkering and shinies/ gender differences. Expect to see these completed buggers tomorrow.

Slight update:

Old:

New:

biggerversionfemale.png

Differences:
- New sprite is slightly larger
- Shading made more solid
- Clouds and outlines coloured darker
- Male/female difference made: males have a slightly larger tail

I'll see if I can finish the shinies by tonight or tomorrow.

Edit: Shinies up.

I know I don't have any chance of winning this, but I'm glad I took part anyway. At the very least, I got some experience out of it...

All I can say is--I kept my mouth shut for the majority of this discussion, and I'm glad I did. All the changes you've made so far have taken these sprites from "Well...I like the design, but..." to "I don't think I can vote for anyone else now."

Only recommendations I have are:

- shortening the horizontal part of the middle head on the backsprite; it looks awkwardly long
- adjusting the position (and therefore modifying the neck) on the right-hand head of the backsprite; where it is now, I'm not sure if the middle head is in front of or behind the right-hand head.

Otherwise, this thing is almost bloody perfect--I have nothing of value to say about the front-sprites except, "Great job." I can't guarantee you'll have my vote (Doug could easily pull an upset), but I'm pretty sure I'll be voting for your submission.

aragornbird's sprite was the first thing I saw in this thread today and I almost shouted out "AW YEAH!"

Like the name competition, I think I'll be abstaining from voting until my options are narrowed down.

Don't say that; your's are really good. In fact, I think the vibrant colors you used make your shiny sprite the best so far. The only suggestion I can even come up with is if you could pull the left leg (our right) down to match the right so it looks like it's about to pounce rather than in the middle of a lunge...

I like yous, but I think it suffers from Paint-syndrome in that it looks fine at 6x magnification, but from this view, it looks severely pillow-shaded. It's mostly on the cloud areas--the lightning looks fine.

This has my favorite pose by a wide margin, and is probably my favorite sprite.

@chomzloh
In my personal opinion, I think the cloud needs to be lighter.
A lighter gray, like on the art, rather than that darker color your using...
But that's just me.

Good job on the pose, and rest of the art- it's definitely one of the better ones.
Just tweak the cloud's colors/shading a bit, and you may actually have a really high contender.
