Cartoon's sprite stands out the most (mainly because I like it, that's why). Nice one.
I updated a few more details of my "leaping" sprite, including some skin splotches and a couple of other details.

I also played around with shiny colors. The base shiny colors below were lifted directly from the Mightyena sprite. Mightyena has a cool shiny IMO, and it's a Dark pokemon like our narwhal here. I think these colors are very "ground-ish" while still having a neat shiny look to it.

I'll certainly keep playing with shiny colors, but this brown and gold is my current fave.
I decided to experiment with a sprite pose that looks bulky, but could justify that 95 speed we gave it. Here's my first shot at it:

I imagine this pokemon tunneling through the ground at great speed, like whales swim through the water -- giving it the ability to "leap" out of the ground. So I referred to some pictures of killer whales jumping out of the water, and noticed that they often roll over to the side in mid air. Here's a few pics I found:

I think this kind of leap is characteristic of big bulky water animals -- as opposed to say, dolphins which leap straight out and dive in head first. So my sprite is intended to invoke the feeling of the pokemon leaping out of the ground while rolling a bit on its side. The arms are spread out wide to connote action. I used foreshortening and smooth curves to imply speed, hopefully without sacrificing bulk.
I'm debating trying to open the mouth, but that introduces a lot of complexity and detail, that I'm a little hesitant to tackle. I'm also not sure I want this to look ferocious. I already did that on my other sprite. With this one, I want it to bring out the serious side of Dark typing, not the angry side.
I like this sprite better than my other -- mainly because I can imagine seeing this next to other pokemon sprites, more readily than my other one. But, I'm curious to hear your feedback on my change in direction here.
It's shiny choosing time! I wanted to emphasize the "darkness" of the Pokemon, so black is a constant. But what should the top color be?

Definitely purple. I really like that combination. It's shiny choosing time! I wanted to emphasize the "darkness" of the Pokemon, so black is a constant. But what should the top color be?

I like the black one and the purple one. I think all of them minus the first one would work perfectly. It's shiny choosing time! I wanted to emphasize the "darkness" of the Pokemon, so black is a constant. But what should the top color be?

I'm not quite sure how it would look, but as mentioned earlier, It does look like it's flying, so perhaps you can try adding a bit of cirt and an open hole on the bottom, perhaps slightly covering the tip of the tail, so it looks like it just burst out of the ground, rather than flying (or was standing on it's tail and is like... toppling over).I updated a few more details of my "leaping" sprite, including some skin splotches and a couple of other details.

I said I was no good at back sprites.
