Overview

Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Flare Blitz
move 3: Dragon Claw / Outrage
move 4: Roost
ability: Blaze (Tough Claws)
item: Charizardite X
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
=========
- Swords Dance (move 1/move 4)
- Earthquake (move 4)

Set Details
=========
- Dragon Dance, decent bulk, and a good base 100 Speed makes it pretty hard to revenge kill at +1
- Fire and Dragon is an excellent STAB duo that hits pretty much everything barring Heatran for at least neutral damage
- Faces heavy competition from Mega Blaziken, but Charizard differentiates itself by beating Giratina formes easily as well as posessing better bulk and access to Roost, which means it isn't as easily picked off by priority, unless it has already taken significant damage in setting up, or from Flare Blitz recoil
- Dragon typing lets Mega Charizard X check Electric Arceus
- EVs are straightforward, 252 Speed EVs with a Jolly nature lets you speed tie Palkia and outspeed base 90-99s. 252 Attack EVs let you hit as hard as possible.
- Use Blaze, Solar Power is useless on a set that does not utilize special attacks

Usage Tips
=========

- Bring it in on resisted hits or on Pokemon you can threaten out and set up for a sweep
- Be aware of Flare Blitz's monstrous power in Sun (e.g. OHKOes Geomancy Xerneas, +1 OHKOes physically defensive Xerneas/type-neutral 252 HP Arceus).
- Sometimes better to just spam Flare Blitz or Dregon Claw/Outrage, which are very strong even unboosted
- Dont set up recklessly when hard checks to it are still healthy. Don't set up on something that can deal enough damage such that Charizard is picked off by priority the next turn/is KOed by Flare Blitz recoil.

Team Options
=========

- Sticky Web if using Swords Dance over Dragon Dance
- Wobbuffet
- Groudon provides sun and can also conveniently switch into Rock moves and unboosted Earthquake
- Defog or Rapid Spin — Mega Charizard X is still 2x Stealth Rock-weak and 4x weak before Mega Evolution. Support Arceus formes make good Defog users, while Rapid Spin users include Cloyster and Tentacruel
- Kyogre check. Palkia is a good offensive check, other checks such as Water Arceus/Grass Arceus/Gastrodon are also usable
- Have 1-2 good switch-ins to Heatran, which Charizard cannot overcome unless it carries Earthquake. Refresh Waterceus is a good example
- Teammates to take advantage of broken walls that Charizard leaves behind - other strong physical sweepers such as Extreme Killer Arceus and Rock Polish Groudon are good to have

Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Fire Blast / Overheat
move 2: Dragon Pulse / Solar Beam
move 3: Toxic / Focus Blast
move 4: Roost
ability: Solar Power (Drought)
item: Charizardite Y
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
=========

(move 3/move 4)
- Defog
- Sunny Day
- Roar

Set Details
=========
- 252 EVs invested in both Special Attack and Speed to hit as hard and fast as possible. A Jolly nature lets Charizard outpace base 90-99s, while using a Modest nature gives Charizard's STAB move even more destructive power (e.g. Fire Blast has a 94% chance to OHKO 252 HP Groudon after Stealth Rock damage as opposed to a 44% chance with a Timid nature)
- Good secondary Drought inducer for sun teams that can 1) abuse the sun itself and 2) potentially lure in and remove Kyogre/Tyranitar
- Unfortunate 4x Stealth Rock-weak typing, but is compensated for somewhat by Roost,
- Solar Power is preferred ability pre-Mega Evolution although it will rarely get to use it anyway

Usage Tips
=========
- Straightforward to use - spam powerful moves while keeping healthy if you carry Roost
- Toxic bulky or resistant switch-ins
- If you see Kyogre/Tyranitar it may be a good idea to use Solar Beam as you Mega Evolve, or use Sunny Day if you have already Mega Evolved

Team Options
=========
- Defog or Rapid Spin support is even more important now since you're always 4x Stealth Rock-weak
- Wobbuffet
- Pokemon that do well on sun teams are good teammates — Ho-Oh is great, Electric Arceus to take on rain teams
- Ho-Oh check. Rock Arceus does excellently, Tyranitar (so Excadrill as well, actually works as Charizard can remove Ground-types that trouble sand teams and Excadrill has Rapid Spin) is also usable if you can fit it.

Other Options
=========

- Fire Punch (X)
- Iron Tail (X)
- Blast Burn (Y)
- Rock Slide (Y)
- Tailwind

Checks & Counters
=========

Charizard is fairly difficult to counter before it reveals the identity of its Mega Evolution, after which it is much easier to play around

**Stealth Rock**:

Mega Charizard X:

**Heatran**: Need to watch out for EQ variants, and it can't take repeated boosted Dragon Claw or Outrage but is an excellent counter otherwise.

**Ground-types**: Hippowdon is a good check in general. Quagsire gets 2HKOed by Outrage, but takes Dragon Claw comfortably and beats Charizard pretty easily with Earthquake

**Rock-types**: Tyranitar and Rock Arceus can take a boosted Dragon Claw and OHKO in return with a Rock move, but need to watch out for Earthquake or boosted Outrage if they are not extremely healthy

**Physical Walls in Rain**: These include Gliscor, Landorus-T, support Arceus formes, physically defensive Xerneas and Yveltal, and Lugia. They can all take a hit pretty well in rain and retaliate with a STAB move/Toxic.

Mega Charizard Y:

**Fire-types**: Ho-Oh beats Charizard easily with Brave Bird unless it carries the rare Rock Slide. Heatran is still a hindrance with Toxic, even if Focus Blast 2HKOes it. Mega Charizard X and Reshiram lose to Dragon Pulse variants but can threaten it out otherwise

**Palkia**: Needs significant Special Defense investment or Assault Vest to avoid the 2HKO from Dragon Pulse (low bulk investment also means Solar Beam can 2HKO sometimes after Stealth Rock), but otherwise switches into Charizard pretty well and hits it hard with Spacial Rend or Hydro Pump

**Kyogre**: Cannot switch into Solar Beam as Charizard Mega Evolves and is screwed up by Sunny Day variants, but rain otherwise renders Charizard near-useless

**Rock-types**: Tyranitar and Rock Arceus fear Focus Blast, but the former messes with Charizard by changing the weather while the latter can switch into one and proceed to outspeed and OHKO with STAB Judgment

ok i think this needs another quick round of qc because:
- i merged the dd and sd sets. i personally think 2 separate sets are really unecessary but i'll act according to qc's wishes
- i changed zard y's slashing quite a bit
retained pretty much everything else bar phrasing

tagging shrang to do the overview whenever

On ZardY, Focus Blast should be slashed over Toxic, nailing Heatran and Tyranitar is clutch and the former walls you completely without it. Bulky switch-ins (like max HP Arceus) despise taking a Fire Blast since it will 2HKO them. I'm fine with Toxic getting a slash though. I prefer Solar Beam to Dragon Pulse to nail Waterceus and Rockceus on the switch, but honestly Toxic can do that too...Fire Blast / Toxic / Focus Blast / Roost is a legitimate set but the current slashing leaves no room for it, though Palkia then walls you (Goth support can help with spec def Palkia). Thoughts?

Zard X looks good at a glance.

Are you merging them because they play very similarly? If not, then why merge them? You do not merge sets that are played different, like Dragon Dance versus Swords Dance.

i merged the sets because i think sd zard x is viable on too few (1) team archetypes to merit its own set

about defog zard y, i could slash it in but i have my reservations about it being the only set

i agree with what sweep said about focus blast + toxic but haven't figured out the best way to represent focus blast/toxic/defog/dragon pulse/solar beam/roost neatly and accurately

Have we ever thought about Earthquake ZardY? EVd correctly it 2HKOs TTar and OHKOs Heatran, I think it's worth a mention somewhere.

EDIT: I also think Adamant is a better nature for ZardX. I've used it myself and it is just so much stronger, it's quite difficult to ignore. It also alleviates the necessity to run Outrage. Also, a spread of 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spe is better. If you are concerned about loosing the speed tie with Palkia, just know that Palkia isn't a set-up opportunity in the first place; and the bulk is awesome to have in order to take priority better.

this has been stagnant for some time. i'll be doing the writeup probably tomorrow, if there are issues with the slashing we can sort it out after it's written

shrang if you're still keen on the overview
