Once considered the best offensive Water-type of Little Cup in DPP, Chinchou has fallen off of its high horse a bit. First of all, the new item Eviolite made opposing Pokemon much bulkier, significantly decreasing the possibility of a Chinchou sweep. BW also brought a very powerful enemy for Chinchou in Ferroseed. However, Chinchou still has excellent defensive and offensive typing, good stats, and amazing coverage, so it's still a solid Pokemon. Chinchou has the potential to open holes, sweep late game, and even act as a reliable check to many threats.

name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Hydro Pump / Surf
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Ice Beam
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Modest
evs: 52 Def / 232 SpA / 220 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

By equipping a Choice Scarf, Chinchou can be an effective revenge killer, due to its excellent coverage, good speed, and good special attack. Hydro Pump is Chinchou's Water-type STAB, and although Surf can be used if you dislike Hydro Pump's imperfect accuracy, it's significantly weaker, and Chinchou will lose some important OHKOs, including one on Hippopotas. Hydro Pump also allows Chinchou to KO Gligar, a very dangerous threat. Volt Switch is one of Chinchou's new toys, allowing it to scout the opposing team while doing reasonable damage. Thunderbolt is Chinchou's main Electric-type STAB, used to destroy bulky Water-types as well as Flying-type Pokemon. Hidden Power Fire hits Ferroseed for 4x super effective damage, enough to 2HKO it. Ice Beam hits everything that Water and Electric coverage doesn't hit, namely Grass- and Dragon-type Pokemon. However, it does very little damage to Ferroseed, a very common Chinchou switch-in.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Chinchou's Special Attack for maximum damage output, and invests 220 EVs in Speed to reach 16 Speed. This allows Chinchou to outspeed Jolly Dragon Dance Scraggy, Choice Scarf Magnemite, Choice Scarf Snover, and others. The remaining EVs are invested into its Defense. Hidden Power Grass may also be considered over Ice Beam or Volt Switch, as it allows you to hit opposing Chinchou for super effective damage.

Flying-type Pokemon or Levitate users are very effective teammates for Chinchou, taking all Ground-type attacks aimed at Chinchou. A good example of a Levitate Pokemon that has good synergy with Chinchou is Bronzor, as it resists both Ground- and Grass-type attacks directed at Chinchou. Chinchou can also absorb Fire-type attacks that would otherwise hit Bronzor hard. Ferroseed is another good teammate for Chinchou as it can lay down entry hazards which can help Chinchou plow through teams. Ferroseed also covers Chinchou's Grass-type weakness. Basically, any Pokemon who resists Grass or Ground-type attacks can make a very good teammate for Chinchou.

[SET]
name: Agility
move 1: Agility
move 2: Hydro Pump
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Ice Beam
item: Life Orb
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Modest
evs: 76 HP / 52 Def / 232 SpA / 144 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Chinchou can also work as a late game sweeper. After using Agility, Chinchou reaches 30 Speed with the given EVs, outpacing even base 85 Speed Pokemon carrying Choice Scarf, such as Gligar and Misdreavus. It can then attack the foe with a powerful STAB Hydro Pump backed by Life Orb. Water-type Pokemon, who take little damage from Hydro Pump, will be hit with super effective damage by STAB Thunderbolt. The last move is a toss up. Hidden Power Fire is recommended as it hits Ferroseed and Snover for 4x super effective damage. Ice Beam can be used because it is stronger and can hit Dragon-type Pokemon such as Dratini, who would otherwise walk all over Chinchou.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As stated earlier, the Speed EVs let Chinchou reach 30 Speed after a single Agility. The remaining EVs maximize Chinchou's Special Attack and give it some extra bulk in both defenses. An EV Spread that maximizes Chinchou's Speed may be considered, but with 252 Speed EVs, Chinchou will only reach 32 Speed, an insignificant increase from 30. Replacing Chinchou's Life Orb with an Eviolite will allow Chinchou to take priority attacks such as Fake Out and Mach Punch a bit easier. An Air Balloon can also be used to give Chinchou a temporary immunity to Ground-type attacks. However, Chinchou needs all the power it can get to break through the defenses of opposing Eviolite Pokemon, making Life Orb the better choice. For this reason, although Surf can be used over Hydro Pump for its reliability, it is not recommended because of the loss in power.

Any Pokemon who resists Ground- or Grass-type attacks is a good teammate for Chinchou. For example, Bronzor works well as he resists both Ground- and Grass-type attacks, while Chinchou can absorb any Fire-type attacks directed at Bronzor. Any Pokemon who can lay down entry hazards to support Chinchou's sweep is also a viable teammate. A good example of this is Ferroseed, who can set up Stealth Rock and Spikes and also cover Chinchou's Grass-type weakness. Gligar is another good teammate as it is immune to Ground-type attacks and can set up Stealth Rock.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

There are a few other options that Chinchou can utilize, one of which is a Choice Specs set. With Choice Specs, Chinchou has the immediate power to tear holes into teams, allowing other teammates to sweep. Chinchou can also make use of a specially defensive set, allowing it to take a lot of hits, especially with the addition of an Eviolite. It can use a set consisting of Thunderbolt, Scald, Thunder Wave, and Confuse Ray. Signal Beam is a usable move to hit Grass-types, but Ice Beam is stronger against everything but Snover. Chinchou can also use Hidden Power Ground or Grass to hit other Chinchou. Charge Beam can also be utilized on either of the sets to get a potential Special Attack boost.

[CHECKS AND COUNTERS]

Thanks to Chinchou's weakness to Ground-type attacks and low Defense, any faster Pokemon with Earthquake will do a lot of damage to it. For example, Gligar can outspeed Chinchou and KO it with Earthquake. Snover is a very good counter to Chinchou as it resists all of Chinchou's attacks barring Ice Beam, and can KO Chinchou with Giga Drain. Munchlax walls Chinchou, and can beat it with Earthquake, but repeated Hydro Pumps will eventually wear it down.

Ferroseed should take priority over Dragon-Types since dragons have become so rare this gen.

| 6 | Ferroseed | 600 | 23.1481 |

compared to

| 40 | Dratini | 87 | 3.3565 |
| 58 | Axew | 42 | 1.6204 |
| 61 | Deino | 38 | 1.4660 |
| 102 | Bagon | 13 | 0.5015 |
| 116 | Gible | 10 | 0.3858 |

Dratini, the most "common" dragon usually doesn't even use Defensive EVs, even having Naive Nature with LO sometimes, so it usually doesn't matter. Your SpA EVs are already tailored towards HP Fire (which also hits Grass-Types) anywho.

Also, transfer the HP EVs to Spe for 16 Speed (on the Choice Scarf set) to outrun Jolly DD Scraggy and other Scarfers who barely outrun the 14 Scarf Benchmark.

Mention Charge Beam or something in OO and HP Ground/Grass to hit other Chinchou. I suppose you could mention Air Ballon there too but w/e. Mention Scald alongside the special defensive set.

Would a set similar to this be viable at all? I'm not exactly a rabid LC player, but it seems to me that with a higher HP stat than Staryu and a comparable SpD stat, better typing, a healing Ability, and STAB on both Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt, Chinchou would be able to pull off the set. The only issue would be the lack of reliable recovery and lower power, but it seems solid enough.

changes have been made

@eonADS: that would be the same thing as the agility set with a filler move in place of agility. it is also outclassed by staryu because of no recovery and it's weaker.

Is Specially Defensive Chinchou from Gen IV no longer viable?

[SET COMMENTS]

This is probably the best set for Chinchou's best set; by equipping a Choice Scarf, Chinchou can be an effective revenge killer, due to his its excellent coverage, good speed, good special attack, (comma) and powerful moves. Hydro Pump is used here for Water-type STAB, but you can use Surf if Hydro Pump's accuracy bothers you, but and although Surf can be used if you dislike Hydro Pump's imperfect accuracy, know that it's significantly weaker and you will lose some important OHKOs, such as the one on Hippopotas. Hydro Pump is also very useful as it allows you to KO Gligar, who is a very dangerous threat. Volt Switch is one of Chinchou's new toys and it's great for scouting, as well as doing reasonable damage. Thunderbolt is the main Electric-type STAB, used to destroy bulky Water-types, as well as Flying Pokemon, who Chinchou can easily revenge kill. Hidden Power Fire hits Ferroseed for 4x super effective damage, (comma) doing enough damage to 2HKO it. Ice Beam hits everything that Water + Electric can't hit, namely Grass- and Dragon-type Pokemon. However, it does very poor little damage to Ferroseed, a very common Chinchou switch-in.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Chinchou's Special Attack for max damage output, while 220 EVs are invested in Speed to reach a maximum of 16 Speed. This allows Chinchou to outspeed Jolly Dragon Dance Scraggy, Choice Scarf Magnemite, Choice Scarf Snover, (comma) and others. The rest remaining EVs are invested into its Defense. Hidden Power Grass may also be considered over Ice Beam or Volt Switch as it allows you to hit opposing Chinchou for super effective damage.

[SET COMMENTS]

Chinchou can also work as a late game sweeper. After using an Agillity Agility, Chinchou reaches 30 Speed with the given EVs, outpacing even scarfed base 85 Speed Pokemon carrying Choice Scarf, such as Gligar and Misdreavus. It can, (no comma) then, (no comma) attack the foe with a powerful STAB Hydro Pump backed by Life Orb. Water-type Pokemon, who take little damage from Hydro Pump, (comma) will be hit with super effective damage by STAB Thunderbolt. Volt Absorb is a very useful ability as it allows Chinchou to come in on any Electric-type attack and restore some health. The given EV spread maximizes Chinchou's Special Attack, as well as giving Chinchou some bulk in Defense. As stated earlier, the Speed EVs let Chinchou reach 30 Speed after an Agility.
(this info is for AC)

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As stated earlier, the Speed EVs let Chinchou reach 30 Speed after a single Agility. The remaining EVs maximize Chinchou's Special Attack, as well as give it some extra bulk in both defenses. For this reason, although Surf can be used over Hydro Pump for its reliability, it is not recommended because of the loss in power. Surf could be considered over Hydro Pump if you prefer reliability over power, but this is not reccomended as Chinchou needs as much power as it can get to get through Eviolite Pokemon. Eviolite may also be considered over Life Orb so Chinchou can take Priority like Fake Out and Mach Punch a bit easier. Again though, Chinchou needs as much power as it can get, so Life Orb is the best option for this set. an EV spread that maximizes Chinchou's Speed may be considered, but with a Modest nature Chinchou only reaches 32 Speed which isn't a significant difference from 30 Speed.
(adding the stuff from SC & OO to AC means reordering to keep it flowing, basically from move>item>EVs to EVs>item>move)

Despite the big chunk of red & blue in the middle, this analysis was not bad overall. Just remember a few things:

1) Watch what you're capitalizing. Pokemon is always capitalized, in X-type type is not capitalized, offensive/defensive is not capitalized, in terms like "bulky Water-type" bulky isn't capitalized, &c.
2) Make sure to keep the EVs/items/whatever talk in the right place.
3) If you're going to make a set around a move make sure you know how to spell that move ahhhhhh

GP 1/2.

changes made, thank you very much.

also i know how to spell AGILITY, i probably just had a brain fart or it was late at night. lol.

move 4: Heal Bell / Volt Switch / Thunder Wave
item: Eviolite
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 68 SAtk / 148 SDef

why this set deserves to be on the analysis:

 • allows chinchou to make better use of its good defensive typing. taking about 20-30% from resisted attacks.
 • beats threats such as gastly, taillow, doduo, mantyke, tirtouga, and staryu with ease.
 • can check threats such as mienfoo, scraggy, especially with scald burn
 • volt switch is useful for scouting switches.
 • heal bell is useful to remove status from team and sleep from chinchou.
 • with scald burns, can take hits from both sides very well
 • thunderwave helps bulkier pokemon in this fast paced metagame
additional comments:

 • 156 HP / 212 Def / 68 Spa / 68 Spd spread useable for more physical bulk
 • hidden power fire to beat its usual counters.
 • discharge for double luck status
 • thunderbolt for reliable secondary stab
Teammates & Counters:

 • slowpoke or mantyke are good teammates, the former being able to wall physical attackers while the ladder taking ground and grass hits for chinchuo, while providing ample oppunities for chinchou to come in with volt absorb
 • two biggest counters to this set are snover and ferroseed. houndour and ponyta both come in and serverly threaten them
 • DST clamperl with HP grass/ground beats chinchou. scarfers with 18 speed or higher, such as taillow and doduo are great for revenging.

OK - a couple of things with this set:
1. In set comments, you list Taillow as being crippled from Scald. It has Guts.
2. Thunderbolt here isn't very great seeing as other sets use it more efficiently. Remove Thunderbolt and slash in Thunder Wave before Heal Bell (status isn't very common in LC).
3. Mantyke is a special wall, not physical, though they do get great synergy.

oh sorry if i made it sound like taillow being crippled by guts. for the first list of pokemon he just hard counters them now, while for the second list are things he can check which the scald burn helps.
thunderbolt i knew about i just didnt think of twave as a main use. and heal bell is more to wake chinchou up before rest is over, and having a bigger chance to wake up after you switch out. i know it works cause em annoyed me with that.
and i thought mantyke could take fighting hits from scraggy... oh well ill put other things there

Heal Bell should be listed first. Elevator Music used that set to great success against me, and a big part of it is >2 turn rests.

edit: This actually sorta needs a major revamp lol.

Eviolite is definitely the best item on Chinchou now (even offensive sets), it's bulky enough to tank special hits and even a Drain Punch or two.

Substitute needs to be mentioned somewhere. Sub might even need its own set. (Sub/Hydro Pump/Thunderbolt/HP Fire or Grass)

Set order needs to be revamped, Chinchou really doesn't need the speed boosts anymore with Gligar gone, and it has so many other good options to run. Something like Bulky Sweeper/ResTalk/Scarf/Agility?

edit2: this set:

well both volt swich and heal bell are equally viable imo (the amount of times volt switch has helped me lately is amazing). but that can be decided when qc does something

Bulkychou's been around for a while and it's good, definitely good enough for a set.

Heal Bell first in the last slot for the reasons iss stated. Also heals the team of status which is good.

evs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 68 SAtk / 148 SDef

why this set deserves to be on the analysis:

 • two biggest counters to this set are snover and ferroseed. houndour and ponyta both come in and serverly threaten them
 • DST clamperl with HP grass/ground beats chinchou. scarfers with 18 speed or higher, such as taillow and doduo are great for revenging.

move 2: Sleep Talk
move 3: Scald
move 4: Heal Bell / Volt Switch / Thunder Wave
item: Eviolite
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 68 SAtk / 148 SDef

[SET COMMENTS]

With great special bulk and typing, Bulky Chinchou is a great defensive pokemon. Without reliable recovery, Chinchou is forced to use Rest + Sleep Talk to keep itself healthy, despite the fact that the Rest + Sleep Talk strategy can be a liability with the new Sleep mechanics. In combination with Heal Bell however, Chinchou has a 33% chance each turn to wake up before the two turns of sleep occur. Scald is used as the attack of choice due to its high burn rate, which will allow Chinchou to tank strong physical attacks.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Although the standard EV spread is specialized towards special bulk, a more physically defensive spread of 156 HP / 212 Def / 68 Spa / 68 Spd with a Calm nature is useable. Chinchou has many options to use over Heal Bell including Volt Switch, Thunderwave, Hidden Power Fire, and Discharge. Volt Switch allows Chinchou to scout the opponents switches, while Thunderwave can potentially cripple a set-up sweeper such as Clamperl. Hidden Power Fire hits this sets two main counters, Ferroseed and Snover, super effectively. Discharge is a useful secondary STAB to use along with Scald, although their secondary effects can overlap.

This sets main counters include Ferroseed and Snover, both of which can take everything Chinchou could use and either set up hazards, in the formers case, or just flat out destroy Chinchou, Good teammates to threaten those two include Houndour and Ponyta, easily threatening them with their x4 super effective STAB Fire attacks. Other pokemon can also somewhat use this set as set up bait, such as Eviolite Scraggy and Clamperl, depending on the moveset. Choice Scarf users that have 18 speed or greater, such as Choice Scarf Taillow or Doduo, can be used to outspeed both after their respective boosting move and OHKO with STAB Bravebird.

I rewrote it.

[SET]
name: ResTalk
move 1: Rest
move 2: Sleep Talk
move 3: Scald
move 4: Heal Bell / Volt Switch / Thunder Wave
item: Eviolite
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 68 SAtk / 148 SDef

[SET COMMENTS]

When given an Eviolite, Chinchou has great special bulk. Combined with its typing and Volt Absorb, Chinchou can effectively wall most special attackers.

Rest is Chinchou's only form of recovery. Sleep Talk is used to make sure Chinchou is not set-up bait while it is sleeping. Scald provides a STAB attack and with a 30% burn chance, allows Chinchou to take on physical attackers as well. Heal Bell gives Chinchou a 33% chance to wake up early from Rest, as well as curing status from its team. Volt Switch allows Chinchou to escape from common counters while scouting the opponent at the same time. Alternatively, Thunder Wave can be used to cripple sweepers such as Gastly.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread is tailored to allow Chinchou to take special hits well. Alternatively, a more physically defensive spread of 156 HP / 212 Def / 68 SpA / 68 SpD with a Calm nature is usable. Chinchou can use Hidden Power Fire over Heal Bell to hit Ferroseed and Snover, its two most common counters. Discharge can also be used, but its paralysis chance may overlap with Scald's burn chance.

As mentioned earlier, Ferroseed and Snover are the two biggest threats to Chinchou. Ferroseed can easily wall anything that Chinchou throws at it, and set up entry hazards or kill Chinchou with Bullet Seed. Snover threatens Chinchou with its STAB Grass moves, while being resistant to both of Chinchou's STABs. Fire-types, such as Houndour and Ponyta, can threaten or kill Ferroseed and Snover with their STAB Fire attacks. Depending on what moves Chinchou chooses to run, Pokemon such as Scraggy and Clamperl can set up on Chinchou. Choice Scarf Tailow and Doduo can outspeed both of these threats after a boost and OHKO them with Brave Bird.
