Circus Premier League

Hi had sort of a fun idea for an event/game. Wanted some feedback on interest and on what to include if interest exists.

Was thinking that a lot of parts of the site have a premier league, so why don't we make one for Circus?

Same idea as SPL; you have some captains with money to spend on drafting players that they can fill into various slots of a competition.

Slot ideas:

current gen OU
current gen randbats
chess
puzzles (in the style of the smogon puzzle hunt)
cryptic crosswords
genius DMs
mafia/resistance bo3 (this is probably a terrible idea)
something tabletop-y
Assorted flash games
hearts/spades
Smash

Seems like kind of a fun way to bring together different interests all together and to compete and rage and make memes and all that jazz.

Fire away.

for size, the amount of teams/slots is obviously gonna depend on interest, which I don't have the best sense for since nothing like this has really been done before here.

My hunch would be that there would be 4-6 teams, probably ultimately like 5-6 different slots, Perhaps teams could have the ability to play one player in two different slots if we're trying to have more slots with not enough players to really support them with enough subs. Stuff like that

I like the idea! Maybe not a "premier league" for a name but how about Circus Maximus Olympics? PL on this site kind of has a tradition of weekly fights but some of these competitions aren't well suited to being done weekly and can be organized in a more creative fashion. Some of these could be races to do on a competitors time like the puzzles, cryptics and could allow for the variety in the games we play!

Tbh I like the premier League name because it brings a level of head turning on the site as a whole. Even if it doesn't function the same as other pls, calling it a pl seems like it would bring in more players/attention to me.

Flash games might not be such a good idea bc Adobe Flash is being discontinued soon-ish; otherwise this sounds really cool.

If someone was willing to plan out a John campaign rather than inventing a starting point on the spot that would be cool maybe? Not sure abt it though cuz it could easily go wrong+host bias could play into it a bit too much (tho ig host revenge is part of the fun of it haha)

It sounds interesting, but I'm a nerd and might request a slash Survivor immunity challenges next to Genius DMs... or even Fast Survivor if it's done with aliases.

For the Pokemon tiers, I guess randbats and OU are fairly accessible but I'm not sure what % of people in circus play which tiers.

Also agree w/ dusk in favoring the PL name.

do we even have a userbase for this large enough to support more than 2 teams

dont wanna sound like a bore but we'd have to severely cut down on slots to support teams. a lot of other forum premier leagues are filled by players from outside of that community (usually from overused forum), i dont exactly see those same 'filler' players flocking here.

i would do 1x ou 1x randbat 1x genius dm 1xsomething else. 4 player teams with captains being able to sub seems somewhat reasonable, maybe even too big still..... dont do things that require more than 2 people to coordinat a timezone as those are always hell. look at genius game main match for proof.

we have a survivor running of over 20 people and there's active members not in that game. pretty sure we can pull 20-30 comfortably if people were interested since it's not just survivor player base, or just mafia player base, or just pokemon player base.

like it's very possible we just get 20 and cant really go too crazy but I think 20 is easily doable.

Like I think if we're doing like bare minimum of like, 4 teams, 4 slots, if we allow one player to double enter, teams of 5 probably work for that which comes out to 20. Only need 3/5 people active during a given week.

Hope would be for it to be bigger obviously but I think it can run even with just 20

(in all seriousness this seems like a cool idea if there are enough bodies for it)

ok I think what i'll do is that i'll leave this up for like 3 more days for people to either post format ideas, or post game ideas

then after that, I'll put up a sign up thread where people can in and say what of the possible games listed they'd be interested in playing.

I'll probably trim some stuff like mafia if no one gives me a good 1v1 setting for it, and cryptics since I don't think I want to come up with a new cryptic every week that isn't researchable online, etc. Would also like to know what a good 1v1 tabletop combat system that doesn't just have an optimal strategy would even look like but yeah.

There’s no great options for mafia or res in a 1v1 setting imo. Still if we are doing 1v1 diplo it probably isn’t hard to come up with a similar 1v1 mafia setting that just comes down to planning actions while removing the negotiation / lying aspect of the game.

I think that 5 player teams is doable, probably could support 6 5 player teams with the current player base given how accessible this is.

Imo we should have OU / Randbats / Rotating strategy game (Chess / Diplo / ?) / rotating card game (Hearts / Spades / ?) (also note it might be better to have two players be in this slot) / possibly one miscellaneous game per week (or just cut the fifth slot if two players go to the card game slot).

If we wanted to do two for card games and a miscellaneous I’d vote to just rotate OU and randbats.

I mean, couldn't we have something where the mafia game is not 1v1? What if the mafia game each weak involved 2 or 3 players on each team all competing in some sort of team-based free for all? Sure it messes up with the 1v1 formula of PLs, but this isn't really a 1v1 forum, so why force it?

It could be something more like a points based league, where the winning team at the end is the one with the most points. Winning stuff like the 1v1 OU or randbats is obviously 1 point, but if we did FFA mafia, then coming in first for that could be like 4 points, 2nd 3 points, 3rd 2 points, etc.

I mean, the specifics could change a lot, but my big point here is that I don't think it's either necessary or particularly representative of circus maximus if every single game we have in our PL is 1v1.

Ya it could just be a FFA where like two players from each team enter and you get points based on final placement - it could also be a generic thing that could be replayed over and over. That would work I think and would at least simulate mafia, though a decision would need to be made as to whether it would be a live thing or over time (and of over time, how to weight it vs other categories that are played weekly).

What if instead of drafting players like normal, we have a mafia viva game?

So all the team captains start on factions and everyone else can be recruited. There's not really a way to cause a faction to lose this way. But if it's in the very first round, maybe instead we can give the winning team the Round 2 bye? That of course only works if there's an odd number of groups, but I think this could be a fun way to still include the mafia genre into this while also making it a bit more diverse than just an auction for recruitment.

For even number of teams, we could maybe give the winning team some kind of immunity in round 2 if they lose. ++ points for the survivor theme, but it could add some complications for hosting.
