Just an everyday battle i had with someone in the smogon server.
I thought it was somewhat exciting and also wanted to show some great pokes and sets that don't see a lot of use in OU like offensive T-Spikes Scolipede and defensive Rapid Spin Cloyster.
Here we go....

...My comments will be in bold letters...

Battle between alex wolf and Gepet started!

Tier: Standard OU
Mode: Singles
Variation: +11, -21
Rule: Rated
Rule: Sleep Clause
Rule: Species Clause
Rule: Wifi Battle

Your team: Ninetales / Cloyster / Scolipede / Volcarona / Latias / Dugtrio
Opponent's team: Politoed / Rotom-W / Ferrothorn / Dragonite / Scizor / Tentacruel

I decide to lead with Scolipede to setup T-Spikes and quickly lure Tentacruel to come in.My Scolipede also has Focus Sash so i can survive the first hit and then come back later to set up another one if i manage to keep SR off the field...

Poison spikes were scattered all around the feet of Gepet's team!

The foe's Politoed used Scald!
Scolipede lost 168 HP! (64% of its health)
Scolipede was burned!

Rain continues to fall!
Scolipede is hurt by its burn!

Everything goes as expected and even though i got burned it doesn't matter 'cause Scolipede is not meant to attack a lot anyway...Now i am going to switch into Ninetales to bring the sun up and lure Tentacruel in...

Ninetales restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Not much to say here. Now i am pretty sure that he will be bringing his Tentacruel in as all of his other pokes either dislike fire moves or fear WoW/Toxic while Tentacruel doesn't give two shits as a boss he is!
Let's kill the boss with Dugtrio...

...or not?Hax double strikes and ohkoes my beloved mole, bypassing even his sash with the stupid burn...
Of 'course it is only logical to expect boiling water to burn even more in bright sunshine right?
Now that my plans of killing this Tenta are ruined i am going to bring in Scolipede which can setup T-Spikes one more time before he dies, hopefully poisoning Toed when he comes in...

And while i burn him he goes for the spin.Pretty expected as he doesn't want his weather inducer poisoned.I guess i have to do it the hard way now, meaning to predict the switch in to Toed and then burn him.Now i will switch to Cloyster as i predict he will go for the T-Spikes which greatly affect my team...

But he decided that having his rain back is more important...Ok i guess but i have to switch out since even though it resists water,Cloyster's S.Def sucks and i cannot seriously damage him anyway with Rock Blast with no setup or boosting item.
Time to bring in my proper water resist...

As i switch to Latias Toed decides to sing around...
I guess he expected Cloyster to use Shell Smash,as this is what most of them do nowadays.I go for Roar, and i can't really remember why.
Maybe i missclicked or maybe i forgot that my T-Spikes were spun.
I should have seen the Toxic coming but since i don't carry Sub,there wasn't much i could do and this Latias is not meant to sweep anyway.I am just using him to have a safe switch in against strong water and electric attacks that murder this team.

And my opponent smartly switches to his Scizor, while i stupidly setup.Since i don't know his set i am going to bet that this is the standart CB set.So he will either try to Pursuit me in which case i am dead or almost dead or he will use U-Turn to scout my switch in.
I am going to switch into Cloyster which will take anything except Superpower like a champ.

Rain continues to fall!

Oh shit! What the hell am i going to do now?
Let's take a look at my options.I cannot switch into Ninetales since it may carry Superpower which will easily ohko.
I could switch into Volcarona which is physically defensive, but maybe i cannot ohko him if it is specially defensive and he could 2hko me with 2 Bug Bites.I know that i am overcomplicating this but Volcarona is my main sweeper and my only real way of doing something now that Latias is crippled so i have to be very careful. So my only option right now is to stay in and damage him a little bit with Rock Blast and then revenge kill him with Ninetales after he kills my Cloyster. No matter what things are not looking good for me.

But unfortunately for me he switches to Ferro thinking that i will switch to Latias. And i say unfortunately because i don't carry neither of Fire Blast or Flamethrower,as i have Fire Spin. You will see later why i have this move.
Now i have to switch out since i cannot do anything to him and even though he doesn't yet know it eventually he will learn it,and he will stay in either way to tank the first hit while setting up hazards or leech seeding something.I go to Volcarona since it is the only poke that can threaten him right now(Latias is poisoned)and i hope he doesn't carry T-Wave...

And my opponent again makes a good prediction and brings in his Dragonite.Damn you Cloyster where are you now???
There are some good chances that this will be a rain abusing Nite which will greatly relieve me since they cannot do much to Ninetales. But if it is a physical variant it is propably the end for me.I go for the WoW just in case something of my pokes can withstand a hit from it after Ninetales dies...

The foe's Politoed restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Politoed is hurt by its burn!

Phewww....It is indeed a special variant because if it was a physical one he would just setup on me,while he could potentially kill my whole team even burned at this stage of the game. But right now my opponent brought this shitty toad again and this is my final chance to win.He has seen my 2 moves(WoW and Protect)and he propably assumes a standart fire move and Toxic or Disable on the last slot.
So now it is the time to go for the Fire Spin and try to kill him.He will most likey go for the Scald or switch out to something else again just in case i bring in Latias?Let's see...

What can i say now...?My attack missed but for a strange reason he went for the toxic. Why?If i went for Rona then Scald would have killed it and if i went for Latias Scald would at least do some damage. And against Ninetales Scald is definitely the best option since i don't have the luxury to sit around for many times anyway. So maybe it was a misplay.Whatever let's try once more and hope he doesn't switch out...I don't have any better options anyway.

And this is one of the most hilarious things i have ever seen in pokemon battles.Even funnier than someone using Perish Song when Wobb switches in and trap kills them.It seems that my opponent obviously forgot about Fire Spin's trapping effect and tried to use Perish Song to force out Latias, which he was expecting me to bring in.
But he ended up trapping himself. And Fire Spin lasts 4 turns minimum so the kill is guaranteed while i can safely disable his Scald and stall out the turns.Maybe i can still win this...

alex wolf won the battle!
alex wolf: thx for the battle!!!
Gepet: =(

That's why i love Volcarona!Such a beast that has turned upside down so many battles for me!
Sry if the end was a little bit boring and not so surprising at all but after all these struggling you can hardly call this game an easy win or a boring game in general.
My opponent made some serious misplays in the end but that somehow evens out from the early hax that i got with Dugtrio!

Props

- Ninetales for sadistically killing the oppsoing weather inducer!
- Volcarona for 6-0 koing a whole team!
- Tentacruel for absorbing the spikes and killing dugtrio
- My opponent's prediction in general was good

Slops

- Crucial hax
- Some misplays from both me and my opponent
- Me letting Latias get poisoned

Thx for the read guys, enjoy and rate!

good so far, im guessing youll finish it.

i think it was too haxy and the opponent wasnt all that good with him perish songing ninetales. (what was he thinking)

if he saw fire spin miss on the turn, he should NOT have perish songed on the next turn.

some big misplays, but overall good.

edit: i just realized your volcarona is a mono-attacker. how interesting.

edit2: story was overall too short, just felt like you were showing off your volcarona.

dont get me wrong. i love the fier moth.

Um, this warstory was... not very good at all. I mean, at least you weren't in control the whole time. Both you and your opponent were equally bad. I can say that much.

A good number of misplays on both ends and quite a bit of hax.

Firespin Ninetales is really cool though. You inspired me to give it a shot next time I build a sun team.

good so far, im guessing youll finish it.

i think it was too haxy and the opponent wasnt all that good with him perish songing ninetales. (what was he thinking)

if he saw fire spin miss on the turn, he should NOT have perish songed on the next turn.

some big misplays, but overall good.

edit: i just realized your volcarona is a mono-attacker. how interesting.

Yes it was a little showoff but it is amazing.
Mono attacking Rona with Sub and Morning Sun is awesome.
Also Fire Spin Ninetales is good to if used with the proper support(T-Spikes).
And finally defensive Cloyster is a boos even though he didn't get to shine in this match.
I hope he really becomes more popular now that Dnite is the most used poke in OU!

I accept your criticism but don't forget that dugtrio plays a vital role to my strategy and after it got haxed i was at a pretty big disadvantage.
If it hadn't die,T-Spikes would be up and i could proceed to kill Toad from the first turn he switched in(when i used WoW)with Fire Spin.

Magma Storm heatran>fire spin Ninetales.

The shining moment of this match was when you trapped politoed and had him die to his perish song. Otherwise, I wouldn't really call this warstory material.

agree that perish songing after having revealed spin was just retarded on his part, but otherwise i enjoyed it. and flame body can activate while hitting a sub? (not related to the story exactly, but it caught my eye)

which means it can.

I had fun, I guess other people just have higher standards than I do. Warstories are for entertainment, not for showcasing perfect battling.

It depends.
Ninetales also has the Protect-Disable combo which allows you to survive the assaults of every weather inducer out there until they die from Fire Spin and toxic damage!
Also Fire Spin has reliable enough accuracy for me while Magma Storm doesn't...
Also by giving to Ninetales the job of killing the opposing weather inducer i have more free slots to work with. But if you give this job to Heatran you have even less to chose from because Ninetales and Heatran are just setting up your sun,and ensuring the setup will remain of course.
So in my case the job is done by one pokemin, while in your case the same job is done by 2 pokes.
Of 'course Heatran has many other attributes that help the team but traping is its main if you are using the trapping set.

Each one is equally good, and they both have their uses, imo.

no it cant. its a bug on po

It's not a bug on PO. It's an in-game mechanic. Contact abilities such as Effect Spore, Poison Point, and Flame Body can all be triggered with an active Substitute. Play the game, know your shit, and read the research thread that has answered these sorts of claims before you make incorrect assertions like facts.

How about YOU read the shit before you make absurd assertions huh?

Here is a quote from... THE RESEARCH THREAD.

Holds true for all contact abilities.

Conversely, if you attack a Pokemon with a contact ability while it has a Substitute up, its contact ability will not activate. (Yes, this is currently programmed incorrectly on PO, but will be fixed next update.)

Why did you use calm mind, when your latias was already struck by perish song?
Why did your opponent use perish song after seeing fire spin?

Some misplays, but okay overall. I like seeing unique sets being used.

No offense meant but I couldn't enjoy this warstory. Unorthodox sets are fine as long as they're used well, but this game was simply misplay after misplay on both players' part, which killed the warstory for me.

Imo warstory a better battle next time :)

You are right and the warstory was definitely entertaining. Putting fire spin Ninetales to good use and showcasing mono attacking Volcorona were both cool. But it was mainly a sweep once Volc hit the field and sweeps aren't interesting to watch. I'm not saying that I prefer close matches only, but still. And misplays can get annoying as well as hax (Duggy being dispatched by Tentacruel for example).

It depends.

Well, it's more the case of not putting Ninetales' life at risk while heatran is free to offer up more support. The Ninetales set can now be something completely different (safeguard, sunny day, roar, etc) while heatran is still trapping and removing what needs to be trapped in addition to more pokemon who would have little issue actually killing Ninetales, but can't take him on thanks to his massive bulk. Yes, magma storm accuracy sucks, but it actually allows me to deal damage with it while need be. Ninetales will never be killing anything with fire spin (this matters because Ninetales can benefit from some offensive presence).

Of course, having Ninetales run the trapping set lets Heatran run a more offensive set overall if you're using both. So it all comes down to preference.

How about YOU read the shit before you make absurd assertions huh?

TOTALLY PIZZZOWNED

Okay. So let's just clarify things.

That was a superb answer and a wrong one. You see, when the Pokémon that has a Sub up attacks, even the Sub animation fades and the actual Pokémon sprite attacks.

The actual Pokémon attacks, not its substitute, so obviously Static paralyzes and Flame Body burns. So the answer is yes, your Dragonite will get burned.

Peterko confirms that a Pokemon with Flame Body but a Substitute up (such as Flame Body Volcarona behind a Substitute) can burn your Pokemon if it attacks it with a contact move.

I didn't read the warstory--I thought that's what we were discussing, so I retract my comment.

no. thats when when the opponent has a sub.
for example..
if a scizor with a sub attacks a volcarona, it can get burned.
but if a volc has a sub, scizor cannot be burned.

I used CM because i didnt't think too much and went for boosting to try and hit whatever came in hard.Yeah i know it sounds very stupid...
And my opponent used Perish Song,i think, because he didn't remember Fire Spin's trapping effects.A misplay also propably but it was a funny one!

Thx for the rate, will try harder next time!

I think everybody's being a bit harsh. You were relying on your mono-attack Volcorona to sweep and you based your game around that so it led to one or two interesting plays. The first one being your attempt to lure out Tentacruel although I'm not sure that was a good use of your Scolipede. Still, the double switch to Duggy was sexy and I got a good laugh out of how pitifully weak non-CB Dugtrio is.

Given that that Volcarona could never sweep in the rain, I'd like to say the Fire Spin trap on Politoed was the second one but it was kinda tainted by your opponent's Perish Song misplay. I'm sure you've caught some Toeds in spectacular style with that combo but this one lost its shine.

Your opponent didn't seem to be playing with any real direction though - once he had Stealth Rock up he should really have been using Rotom-W to lure in Latias and then Volt Switching to Scizor to try and go for a sweep (Volcarona could counter him but only once) but he got caught up in a weather war that ultimately wouldn't have stopped him from doing that. I notice people doing that a lot - they oughta remember that it's not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain! ;D

(or sun in this case)

Thx for the feedback Lee!
You are right on the spot that this team is all about supporting my mono attacking Rona sweep and i try to always have this in my mind when playing a battle!
Also the misplay by my opponent using Perish Song after seeing Fire Spin kind of ruined the suspense but still trap killing a Politoed with Fire Spin is hilarious!
