Anyone else thinks these are rapidly increasing in quality?
Movies like Spider-man 2 and Batman Begins managed to be entertaining and focus on the true mythos of the main character. This by itself is rpetty good.
However, movies like Iron Man or Sin City make me believe that those movies far transcend the comic book pages and turn into something entirely different. Iron Man was entertaining and very believable; the suit was incredibly well constructed and you felt you could see it flying over you as you left the theater. Sin City managed to join together Frank Miller's writing with brilliant acting and the 'noir' scene worked really well with the mood of the movie. You WERE in the cities of Sin City, witnessing the action firsthand, from the character's perspective.
With the advent of movies like Dark Knight (coming in 10 days) which I believe will be the equivalent of an hour-and-half orgasm and the Watchmen movie, I believe 2008 and 2009 are two incredible years for the comic-book movie genre (if there's such thing as that). I'd like to discuss each movie separately:
- If you aren't going to watch The Dark Knight, you a (BAN ME PLEASE). I pretty much let Batman Begins go over my head, but I've watched it yesterday for the sole reason of wanting to see Heath Ledger's acting (if it fits the trailer's expectations, I'll be happy);
- Watchmen movie. Gormenghast, Glen, where are you? The pictures that were already shown are fucking badass. Seriously, search around. Can't wait to see Rorschach on the big screen. Hope it will meet the (already very high) standards set by Iron Man/Sin City/The Dark Knight (presumably).
- Punisher: War Zone. After seeing the trailer, my expectations dropped so much. Movie is supposedly based on the Punisher MAX comics, where swearing and gore is permitted, written by the majestic Garth Ennis (yeah, the writer of Preacher). I was hoping they'd do something Sin City-esque narration movie but I'm disappointed now. Let's at least hope for a crueler Punisher (in the comics he sets a living man on fire, leaves a man with bullet in the stomach for dead in the forest, and takes the guts out of someone to make him talk).
- On a lighter note, Preacher TV-series for 2009 and also a Y: The Last Man movie coming out on 2009. No info on those yet, but holy shit a Preacher TV-series. I just shit myself saying that out loud.
Discuss.
