Countdown to XY: A Nostalgia Thread

Day 20:

I only discovered online pokemon after 4th gen was out, so I spoiled myself completely on 5th gen. For this gen I'll stop myself since the games are coming out in the USA & Japan simultaneously.

Day 19: Trading away my shiny drilbur because it had a modest nature.

Day 20: Not very much. There wasn't much pre-release info for BW2, I joined after BW were released, and I want to rediscover new pokemon in Gen VI.

Day 19: I used a cheat code that was supposed to get me the Azure Flute in Diamond, but it fucked up my save file and I lost a bunch of my favorite Pokemon that I'd brought over from Emerald (including CC, a Ditto who had the distinction of being the first shiny I ever caught).

Day 20: I spoil EVERYTHING. I'm constantly checking Serebii and the like for new information, bare minimum once per day. Going through the game and getting used to playing with the new Pokemon and such means I'm getting new experiences regardless, so why not learn as much as I can?

Day 19: Hmm...not sure here.

Besides internal batteries dying...i can't think of anything.

Day 20: Mostly it was BW2 and HGSS that i went knowing more than i didn't know. I'd like to going in not knowing almost everything this time around, though.

This one will be short since smogon was down yesterday, but here we go.

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?

It can either be something in the game (e.g., accidentally released your starter) or something in real life (e.g., ruined your Yellow cartridge in the washing machine).

I'm quite lucky as to not have played much in-game Pokemon, so i have three relatively uneventful unfortunate things- the first was when i overtrained my mudkip early game, and i got 6-0'd by a lass with a shroomish T_T, another was when i was experimenting with the b button and evolution, and skipped my marshtomp's learning of mud shot, and the last, is when i dabbled with cheats (i've only been able to play on emulators because i don't have the handheld devices) and the TM cheat screwed up and i had TMs in my pokeball bag, and the TM bag was full so that i could withdraw items from the bag, but if i put it on a pokemon, i couldn't take the item off ever again. Poor Lombre T_T

I thought this question would be fitting for today...
Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
This is probably the first generation that i have been around to witness the first release; i was late for BW and when i first saw Terrakion and VIrizion i thought they were lame, i think differently for Terrakion. I usually spoil more for MTG releases
EDIT: i realised i wasn't answerin the question- i wasn't around for the spoilers for the last 5 generations, and for this generation, i gave up on news because nothing was being released (the sylveon, honedge, starters period). Now i feel like there's too much for me to catch up on :(

Day 20:
I only really got involved on the online scene just before the American release of Pokemon Emerald and I thought to myself then that I must know everything about it and was the same for DP so I was pretty spoiled. I knew my Pearl team before the game was released. Wasn't around for BW but I'm only really going on the Serebii info for XY. I want to know roughly what I'm in for but not all of it. So like starters, a few early Mons, a gym or two but that's mostly it

Day 19: Every time I have ver forget to save and have to replay 2 - 3 gyms because of it. This is why I save several times just to make sure. I don't like to grind in general, so having to do it again is no fun.

Day 20: As much as I could. Really, I love spoilers. They have kept me excited for X and Y for the last couple of months and I'm still eager for more leaks, spoilers and reveals.

Day 20: I don't really care about spoiling the new Pokemon but I'll stay away from anything to do with the story. I feel like your character would have some knowledge of their region (including Pokemon) before setting out on their journey, so finding those things out doesn't really bother me. I don't want to see a full pokedex or anything but a couple of early-game 'mons won't hurt. I got sucked into every leak/rumor/spoiler etc in BW's lead up, and while it didn't total ruin the game for me at all, I still wished I hadn't done it. Just had to find some self control this time around!

19: I remember giving all my cards to one of my friends when I was a kid, and instantly regretted it. Granted, that was a while ago.

20: I try to spoil myself only so far as things that Nintendo releases. I got spoiled a bit too much for BW and found myself less satisfied than I should.

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous games?
Oh, I spoil myself completely. Like, bad milk spoiled. Not just new Pokemon, either - moves, story points, factoids - anything I can find. I can't tell if this is because I'm just that desperate or excited for anything related to the series or if I just enjoy being in "the know". I'm not too proud to say "maybe both". Previously this meant camping websites like I imagine cool people camp concert tickets up til and including the Japanese release, but with X and Y we seem to be more dependent on early leaks. Seeing as how we're getting a worldwide release this time, I'm going to be going in with less info regardless, so the problem is sorta fixed for me (my favorite solution!), but I still don't shy away from the particulars. The way I look at it, I've come this far spoiling myself and still manage to enjoy these games when they come out, so I see no reason to stop now. Plus, it helps me plan out my team ahead of time (until I actually play the game and inevitably change my mind a hundred times). We'll all be in the same boat come release day anyway.

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
I ran into a shiny Geodude while grinding in a Nuzlocke Platinum. Unfortunately it was when i was with Mira. I tried to kill her Kadabra, but he had a tiny bit health left and OHKOed the Geodude.

Day 20:
Spoilers?
Always as much as possible

I like to spoil myself as much as possible, so for fourth and fifth gen, I tried to read everything I could about them before release. Those times, I actually knew an internet existed and used it to find information. It wasn't like that in gen 1, 2, and 3 though because I didn't think I could use the net to do so. Anyway, it's like going to a national park and picking up one of the guides when you're about to hike. I want to know the place better and whether or not I'll like it. If there are any cool plants, animals, geological formations, and whatnot on the trails, it would be great to know in advance so I can spot it. It's very easy to miss small details (I'm not a very observant person sadly so I need guides to lead me). Of course there's no substitute for experience, so I don't think me being spoiled will completely ruin the experience of playing through the game. Even with the spoilers, not everything will be revealed; there will still be stuff to find out (new moves and abilities interaction among each other).

Never really looked up info until Black 2 and now Y. I just read a magazine here or there. Now I read every little titbit of info I can find

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?

I liked them a lot more than the main series because :
- better storyline (imo)
- I actually liked snagging all shadow pokemon despite hating collecting pokemon for pokedex in the usual games. It's just one way to defeat the ennemies and it feels like a good thing to do.
- I like double battles :D. I wish other games would focus more on them.

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?

No, I like knowing everything.

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?

Old sleep mechanics. It's not much I know but it's annoying when your pokemon sleeps for 2-3 turns and have to switch out and reset the counter.

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?

I didn't quite started fresh in BW as I watched lots of let's play and competitive battles before. I like the fact that this game is a start fresh with entirely new pokemon (I don't know why I'm the only one thinking that though).

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?

The episode with 2 gyms battling each other and Pikachu discovering ketchup.

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose?

Unown, most useless piece of crap, even in fun battles. At least Magikarp or Caterpie evolve...

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?

Battling golbats I guess : they either confuse me and I keep hitting myself, and/or they crit me each time they use air cutter and/or flinch me each time they use air slash.
They keep demolishing my pokemon because of hax, so annoying !!

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?

I didn't follow the "spoil" in the previous gens, that's a first :p.

Day 20: I spoil myself what I need to spoil, since Gen IV I play always with a monotype electric type team. So for Gen V I search for every electric pokemon , but now I want to do at the least 3 runs. Electric, Starters and giant lizards

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?

I played both Black 1 & White 2 in Japanese before full translation patches were out, despite not knowing a word of Japanese. It was really interesting to then play each game in English when they were released in the states and get context for all the events in the games.

This is the first time ive been waiting for a new gen right from the reverse count Gamefreak started back in January, unless you count in Gen 5, but i came in kinda late for that and didnt play it til the English version.

I spoiled the crap out of myself, and the sad part was that I was determined to not see any spoilers til the release day. Then, when Mega-evos were confiremed, it exploded on my face, i had heard about it from a friend at school, so i googled it. It seems it was yesterday when i knew about Heliptile, Litleo, pokemon amie, and everything, i just couldnt stop. Im kinda disspaointed in myself, but right now i dont know how i would feel without knowing anything about gen 6.

In the last two generation, I took in just about every spoiler I could find before playing the games. I even watched a BW let's play before those games were out in North America. This time I'm trying to limit spoilers for the sake of adventure, but it's difficult sometimes and I already know more than I wanted to. Like the previous poster said, mega evolution had been far from helpful with this; I've seen discussion of that particular feature on more than just Pokemon sites.

As much as I can find out, tbh. Am also usually too impatient to wait for the English games to come out, thankfully that won't be an issue anymore.

Gunna do this

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?
  • Playing Yellow with my brother and was amazed he caught a pidgeotto in viridian forest just like Ash! Subsequently bummed when I couldn't find anything by Pidgey :D
Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
  • Besides Gyarados, my first was a Shiny Cranidos I hatched from an egg!
Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
  • I've caught all the pokemon in Red and in Ruby. Haven't really tried very hard to complete a Pokedex since then.
Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
  • Nidoking in Yellow Version. Total boss.
Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
  • Golduck or Psyduck. I don't really know why, I just like their designs and Psyducks goofy nature maturing into cool Golduck.
Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
  • Mew under the van by the SS Anne. Fell for that one HARD.
Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
  • Mega-Evolutions no doubt!
Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
  • When I catch a Pokemon I nickname the very first thing I think of. Can be random or can be something that fits.
Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
  • Kanto probably, because of nostalgia googles. But I really like Hoenn's environment; big fan of water and islands and all that jazz.
Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
  • Tougher probably? Or a solid online laddering system that Game Freak monitored and balanced ;)
Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
  • Uhhhh probably the cutting on from Pokemon Stadium(might by PS2) where you had to cut as close to a line on a block of wood. Or the Donphan race one.
Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
  • Route 1 theme, I'm a sucka for it.
Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
  • Loved 'em! A slightly different feel but I really enjoyed the flow of their stories.
Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
  • No.
Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
  • Walking with your Pokemon like in HGSS :/
Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
  • Yes? It wasn't really starting fresh though was it? You could still transfer your older Pokemon.
Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
  • The episode where Ash catches Krabby and goes to the Light House. I had that episode on VHS when I was a kid, watched it a TON!
Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose?
  • Alomomola.
Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
  • Pokemon Yellow file getting corrupted when someone traded me some glitch :(
Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
  • Reading and looking at every possible spoiler on da webs.
Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
  • Actually be on a trip with my girlfriend and her family so I won't be able to play all day but I've already told them I'm gunna be playing a fair amount xD
Ah that was fun :)
