Arceus

-------------------------------

[Overview]

Give Arceus a Dread Plate and watch as one of the best Pokémon in the game becomes the fierce Dark type! Offensively, the Dark-type has excellent neutral coverage (resisted only by Fighting-, Dark-, and Steel-types), and nailing Psychic- and Ghost-types for super effective damage is certainly welcomed in Ubers. Despite these desirable qualities, it is the Dark-type's defensive attributes that truly differentiate Dark Arceus from Ghost Arceus. The Dark-type grants an immunity to Psychic-type attacks and two exploitable resistances to Ghost- and Dark-type attacks, at the cost of just two weaknesses, Fighting- and Bug-type attacks. Dark Arceus' typing gives it a niche, that of being able to set up on Pokémon that rely mainly on Psychic- or Ghost-type attacks, letting it go toe-to-toe with common threats and set up Calm Mind. All in all, Dark Arceus can be a great asset to your team if you give it the chance to shine.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Judgment
move 3: Recover
move 4: Refresh
item: Dread Plate
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set serves to smash through certain stall teams. Calm Mind is the nuts and bolts of this set. It gives Dark Arceus respectable special bulk while boosting Arceus’s Special Attack to fearsome levels. Dark-type Judgment boasts power and good type coverage on its own. Recover allows Arceus to replenish its health and increase long-term survivability. Dark Arceus functions best as a stallbreaker, so self-recovery is invaluable. Refresh lets Dark Arceus shrug off status effects so that it is not forced out by Toxic damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Tempting as it is to compare Dark Arceus with Darkrai, the other notable mono Dark-type in Ubers, they are worlds apart in how they are played. While Darkrai excels in crippling the opponent and being a frail clean-up sweeper, Dark Arceus is at its best as a stallbreaker. Ghost Arceus offers Dark Arceus competition for a teamslot, so you need to make sure your team can play to the strengths that the Dark-type brings. Notably, you can more easily take on threats such as Giratina, Giratina-O, and Mewtwo and force them out. A Timid nature and maximum Speed are recommended for matching the Speed of opposing Arceus, and maximum HP is essential for switching in and setting up Calm Mind. Focus Blast is a more offensive option that deals with the Dark- and Steel-types which easily shrug off Judgment. In fact, the only fully-evolved Pokémon that resist both Dark- and Fighting-type attacks are Heracross and Toxicroak, neither of which is common in Ubers. Be aware that 70% accuracy is depressingly unreliable, so you shouldn't rely on it too much if you choose to use it.

[Other Options]

As can only be expected from a deity, Dark Arceus has a vast movepool brimming with options. Flamethrower is a more reliable secondary attacking option than Focus Blast with sun support. There is also the added benefit of being able to hit Bug-types and certain Steel-types for more damage, even in the rain. Just be sure to have a solid way to deal with Tyranitar and Heatran. Will-O-Wisp is an interesting support option that cuts the opponent’s Attack in half, allowing Dark Arceus to wall otherwise dangerous physical threats such as Zekrom and Tyranitar, but 75% accuracy is somewhat unreliable. Also, Blissey will wall Dark Arceus all day long and kill you it in the long run with Toxic. Roar is available to phaze opponents and can be effective in scouting counters and indirectly damaging the opponent with the help of entry hazards. Reflect can reliably patch up Dark Arceus’s physical Defense to sneak in more Calm Minds and provide team support. Generally though, Ghost Arceus or Steel Arceus can pull off support sets better.

[Checks and Counters]

Ho-Oh is one of the most all-around useful counters to Dark Arceus. Ho-Oh is quite bulky, can Roost off damage, and can deliver some serious pain with Sacred Fire and Brave Bird. Blissey and Chansey can sponge Judgment and cripple Dark Arceus with Toxic if it lacks Refresh. They can also use Snatch to steal Calm Mind boosts and prevent Dark Arceus from healing itself. Fighting-, Dark-, and Steel-types are usually big trouble for Dark Arceus thanks to their resistance to Dark-type attacks (though Dark- and Steel-types do have to be wary of Focus Blast). Fighting Arceus can easily switch in and force Dark Arceus out with its own Calm Mind and Judgment. Terrakion and Lucario can come in on Judgment, nab an Attack boost thanks to Justified, and smack Dark Arceus with Close Combat. Blaziken can switch in to activate Speed Boost and hit back with a devastating Hi Jump Kick. Ferrothorn and Skarmory can set up hazards and cause problems with Leech Seed and Whirlwind, respectively. Dialga can set up with Bulk Up and force Dark Arceus out with Dragon Tail. Scizor also takes Dark-type attacks with relative ease and can threaten Dark Arceus with U-Turn and Superpower. If Dark Arceus lacks Focus Blast, non-Scarfed Darkrai can use Dark Void and use Dark Arceus as set-up fodder. Choice Band Tyranitar can easily switch into Judgment and OHKO Dark Arceus with Superpower after sandstorm damage.

You need a bit more bulk on Dark Arceus. The EV spread needs to be changed to 252 Hp / 4 SpA / 252 Spe. Also you need to mention the mono attacking CM set with Sub or refresh as that is Dark Arceus' primary option.

I updated the OP with your suggestions. I might split this up into both an offensive and a defensive CM set, because all those slashes are getting ridiculous.

No I meant that Darkeus needed a mono CM set something like

Calm Mind / Recover / Refresh / Judgment
252 hp / 4 sp atk / 252 spe

EDIT: Actually that is the only set it can run or should run. Rest everything is OO material. remeber to update your analysis with the new format.

We've had a long coversation on IRC about Dark Arceus before and the result was that it should only run a mono-attacking set with Refresh. Ghost Arceus does really all other things better. In other words remove all slashes but Refresh on the third move.

Remove all the slashed for move 3. Just put Refresh as the main option, because it saves Arceus from Toxic Spikes too. Edit what firecape said.

Ho-oh is perhaps the most reliable counter you will find. Ho-oh is quite bulky, can Roost off damage, and can dish out some serious pain with Sacred Fire. Blissey can sponge special attacks all day long and can cripple you with Toxic. -Fighting types are generally big trouble for Dark Arceus. Fighting Arceus can easily switch in and force you out with its own Judgment. Without Flamethrower, Skarmory can set up hazards and cause problems with Whirlwind. Scarfed Terrakion or Heracross can switch in on a Calm Mind and murder you with Close Combat. Tyranitar can easily switch into Judgment or Flamethrower, set up a sandstorm, and hit hard with Stone Edge.

Tyranitar hits you with Low Kick as well not Stone Edge. Superpower from Choice Band Tyranitar can KO Dark Arceus with Sand Storm damage. Ferrothorn can Leech Seed Dark Arceus and set up Spikes on it. Ferrothron can't touch Arceus though. Steel Arceus can easily beat Dark Arceus in the Calm Mind war due to the resistance. Lucario can come in easily and OHKO with Close Combat. Calm Mind Kyogre can set up alongside Arceus and win the war with powerful water attacks. Blaziken can come in on Judgment thanks to it's part Fighting typing, outspeed Arceus with Speed Boosts and OHKO with High Jump Kick.

More checks/counters:

1) Without Flamethrower, Scizor murders the crap out of Dark Arceus.
2) Choice Scarf Terakion can switch in on Judgement and receive a Justice Heart boost, then proceed to OHKO Arceus with Close Combat. If you lack Focus Blast, he can just set up in your face. (I know this is up already, but I think it's really important so I'm emphasising it)
3) Darkrai can outspeed Arceus and put it to sleep, set up Nasty Plot and OHKO Arceus with Focus Blast, although it must watch out for Focus Blast variants.

You know what, without Focus Blast, Dark Arceus is actually quite poop against a lot of Pokemon. *Insert Steel or Fighting type without Psychic secondary typing* can deal with it quite easily. Dialga can set up Bulk Up and eat it with Outrage or phaze it out with Dragon Tail, Heatran can come in Toxic/Taunt or just Roar it away, Ferrothorn is already mentioned. The rare Excavalier can just switch in Megahorn the crap out whatever switches in. In Dream World, Genosect pretty much murders Dark Arceus, too.

I made some changes based on your recommendations, but I feel that Focus Blast is still useful enough to warrant a slash over Refresh in the set. By the way, wow! Two QC stamps already! Thank you so much!

I made all the corrections made by Calm Pokemaster. Just one thing:
The Dark-type grants an immunity to Psychic-type attacks and two exploitable resistances to Ghost- and Dark-type attacks, at the cost of just two weaknesses, Fighting- and Bug-type attacks.
I added the "type", as it is consistent with the rest of the analysis. If this is acceptable by the GP Team, this analysis is complete!

Ok this needs an overhaul.

I ctrl + F'd stall and did not find it once. The main draw of Dark Arceus is a nearly unstopable stall breaker! If you want a pure sweeper you are much better off with Ghost Arceus. You also completely disregarded my QC post:

We've had a long coversation on IRC about Dark Arceus before and the result was that it should only run a mono-attacking set with Refresh. Ghost Arceus does really all other things better. In other words remove all slashes but Refresh on the third move.

I hate to nullify the hard work done by the GPers, but this analysis doesn't even touch upon the only reason to use Dark Arceus over Ghost Arceus! Please change this analysis to reflect this - Dark Arceus should only be used as a stallbreaker.

edit: You were told by not one but TWO QC members to remove all slashes but Refresh. Please explain why you did not.

edit2: Ok I just looked back at edit history and realized you didn't have anything about stallbreaking in your original post. I guess QC just assumed that you would expand on its stallbreaking abilities as many know that thats what Dark Arceus's "claim to fame" is. We didn't realize you intended to write about Dark Arceus as a sweeper, which it really should not be.

firecape is awesome, you have to listen to him. I found a new way to stop Dark Arceus from beating stall though.

Snatch Chansey! or Blissey works well, and Jibaku no longer uses Dark Arceus so stall teams are safe :)

Ferrothorn + Chansey, Bulk Up Dialga, Fighting Arceus, Calm Mind Kyogre, Steel Arceus, Terrakion, Ho-Oh, Heracross do appear in stall teams! Anyway, I agree with firecape that the main reason to use Dark Arceus is to break certain stall teams.

Edited the OP. Back to QC stage, I guess... Sorry, everyone. This was my first analysis, and it will likely be my last.

Edit: Oh, yeah. I also have Ice... Make that second to last.

This is not your fault. It is mainly QCs for not catching this :/.

I guess you know what happens when you assume...

This does not need to go back to the QC stage, this just needs to be rewritten with the angle that the only draw of Dark Arceus is that of a stallbreaker.

I realize that you have given this up now and anyone that wants it PM me
