December 21 2012?

Guys guys guys guys. The Mayans never predicted anything. They stopped making calendars at this date. Do you want to know why? Probably because they ran out of room on the rock they were writing one.

The OP's post is unsourced and dumb. Berkeley can't just pull numbers out of their ass and say 99% 2012. And they never, ever have done such a thing.

This is a troll right?

I have had that same fantasy. It would be really interesting to see the new religions as well. If you could watch over everything it would be very amusing to see mankind once again in the stone age slowly becoming more advanced as time goes on.

Humanity would be hardly in the "stone age" if that happened, even if they are just 10-year-olds that survive, they would have some reasonable knowledge.

As for the topic itself: yeah... y2k 666 now this... yeah... NO

I mean basically all of humanity being wiped out and evolution occurring all over again. Though there is no guarantee it would happen like this again since it comes down to what traits are most needed at that point.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but given that the Mayans couldn't predict their own impending demises, I have no reason to think they could predict the end of the world.

Seriously, religious texts and other stuff are vague enough that you can find anything predicted to happen at any time. None of them seem to have predicted anything important yet, so there's no good reason to think any of their other arbitrary predictions will come true.

(In my view, you have not "predicted" anything unless people expected it to happen beforehand. Nobody predicted 9/11, because nobody went "oh noes, look at this Nostradamus prophecy about fire, I'd better not go the the WTC today". In contrast, if the world were to end in 2012, then anybody who predicted explicitly that the world would end in 2012 would, in fact, have made a legitimate prediction.)

Okay, I have no idea how to even tackle telling you how silly this is. I'll start, I guess, with this:

1. Yellowstone SuperVolcano
Yeah a supervolcano...in YELLOWSTONE. Someone is a little american centric in their thought process, aren't they? The Pacific 'ring of fire' is probably where this would happen. However, the idea is wrong in the first place- a single super volcano? Please. Try looking up something like the Deccan Traps...

2. Asteroid / Meteorite / Comet Impact
Yeah, comets and meteorites possess no threat to the world, really. Asteroids, yeah, but the odds of that are like in the trillians. While there is a history of asteroids triggering extinction events, it's usually because the life on the planet is in an already weakened state from something like Pangaea's supercontinentinality (I made a word there) lowering the diversity and productive habitats drastically beforehand.

3. Flu Pandemic
Yeah if this happens anywhere in any serious degree I imagine a quarantine will be exacted. I assume you mean the end of the world for all humanity- well good luck reaching some of the more remote populations with a flu or anything.

4. Nuclear War
Nobody is this stupid. Honestly.

5. Grey Goo (nanotechnolgy)
Did you research any of this?

6. Man-made Black Hole
Again, did you research any of this?

7. Crustal Pole Shift
Read up on continental drift and you'll see you're wrong.

8. Rapid-onset Ice Age
I saw that movie too. Not possible.

9. Megatsunami/Global Flood
I saw that movie too. Not possible. Do you have any idea how big a megatsunami would have to be? Where is the water coming from for this flood? Not enough water on the planet for this one. Yeah, I don't see humanity ending at the hand of water.

10. Economic Collapse
Yeah cause people can't get by without money.

11. Peak Oil
What?

12. Extraterrestrials Attack
I have no doubt that ET's exist or existed at one point, but I think interstellar travel is something that isn't very plausible. I think Will Smith said it best in Independance day: "Do you really think they flew all the way here just to pick a fight?" (not an exact quote, sue me).

13. Non-nuclear WW3
I'm rooting for Canada

14. Gamma Ray Burst
OZONE. Although a world filled with hulks would be awesome...

15. Magnetic Pole Reversal
Yeah this would be more devastating to migrating birds and old style compasses than it would be to any person...

16. Biblical Rapture / Judgement Day / Second Coming
I guess one book can't be wrong all the time...

17. New World Order is revealed
Hitler tried it already dude

18. Singularity
How?

19. Return of Planet X / Niburu
How old are you, exactly?

20. Solar Flares
OZONE

21. Nearby Supernova
How do you anticipate this will even do anything to us?

22. Supernova becomes visible
What the hell...are you repeating yourself are just...what?

23. Coronal Mass Ejection
<insert sex joke here>

24. Spiritual Evolution
I'm not even going to point out specifically the inherant wrongness of this.

25. Worldwide Depression/ Loss of Will to Live Inspires Nihilism and Anarchy
But you forgot to mention where Simple Plan and Hawthorne Heights become powerhouse millionaires in this massive depression...

The mayans predict alot of things, 911, floods, earthquakes
No. Nostradamus did 'predict' a few things if you interpret what he's saying the way you want to so it fits.

According to sites above.
Yeah...

Also predict things to go wrong with presidant , Predicted obama to win somthing is going to go wrong according to what i been reading.
<insert black joke here>. Why the hell would things going wrong(?) with the president have any bearing on the survival of humanity? Again, you seem to be a little American Centric.

This as been on the news fox new etc... and discovery channel.
Yeah not your best sources for anything genuinely scientific.

I didn't mean to sound flamey, I tried to hold back since it's not firebot. I was kinda hoping this thread would die on its own but it keeps sticking around so it's time for me to throw a javelin of common sense into things.

6. Man-made Black Hole
Again, did you research any of this?

I will say this, over in Europe they ARE making the biggest machine in the world that is going to throw 2 atoms together at the speed of light (well like barely slower, but whatever) and the result - Physics say - "It's POSSIBLE that a Black Hole will be created in this process" (not an exact quote...) "but the laws of physics show that it will collapse due to it's incrediably small size" (again, not exact quote)

Just saying....

-Matt

and I'm just going to say that it won't happen and they were playing up to media hype probably.

Think about how many times per second atoms or larger accumulations of atoms (ie objects) collide at or near the speed of light in the universe without starting up a black hole.

Well I know that, my previous post was to simply justify why he put it but to also show he didn't know/research it enough to know that it wasn't a threat to humanity.

14. Gamma Ray Burst
OZONE. Although a world filled with hulks would be awesome...
Actually a Gamma Ray Burst would destroy our Ozone layer and we would then end up being exposed to the suns rays and eventually be unable to support life.

This as been on the news fox new etc...
That show has the best actors since Unsolved Mysteries.

i think that if we can figure out what keeps the cockroaches alive, we could save ourselfs from radiation and all of that shit.

Cockroaches have a non-branching circulatory system, which is also why they can survive after having thier heads removed (both parts of the cockroach). Obviously this would only work for simplistic and small animals that can only perform basic survival tasks

Yeah, and that Atom Smasher thing probably has a better chance of experiencing technical failure and breaking down anyways than making a black hole.

Atleast, if the world does end in 2012, it ends at the end of the fourth year- December. That's quite generous, but won't we miss that year's Christmas? :(

The most likely thing to happen in 2012 out of all of these options is a magnetic pole reversal. But the chances of this having a great effect on any lives is small.
