Do People Stereotype You?

I always have stereotyping at my school. Everyone is prejudice against each other at times and it really annoys me. For example when President Barack Obama became president everyone kept calling him the N word. It doesn't matter what skin color you are, what race you are, what your religion is, what your sexuality or ages are, etc. but why do people like to stereotype each other?

"Way to go the extra mile here."

People stereotype others because its either been passed down, or they've based it on what "most" people of the ethnicity do. For example, in Atlanta, some black people call themselves (BAN ME PLEASE)s. You can't assume all blacks do that, though.

But, no, people don't stereotype me. It's hard to find white stereotypes, I guess.

Because it is human nature (and normal brain function) to group together similar things to make classification and understanding easier. Its really hard not to stereotype because we likely do it unconsciously.

I agree but its OKAY if black people call themselves the N word because its an inside joke for them but its VERY WRONG for a white person or someone else to say it. I know it sounds weird but its kind of true like saying an asian person is always good at math is NOT true (ex. me). >.<;

And people always use the word gay which is VERY offensive IMO to gay people.

That's true but just because you think it doesn't mean you should do it. That's what separates civilized people with noncivilized people.

That's because (excuse me if I'm wrong, I don't mean to try to make it look like I know all about the asian culture) Asian's are typically known to have a focus on education and musical talent and such, so the generalization stems from that I think.

Saying that something is gay is poor word choice; it isn't really a stereotype.

Like I said, we do it unconsciously because are brains are programmed to think that way. The separation is whether we act on those stereotypes or not.

Oh yes. I'm a marxist/anarchist sometime-radical feminist bisexual with a tendency to fly off the handle, chain smokes, binge drinks and a proclivity to sleep around when I'm single.. I think I neatly fit myself into every stereotype going

How is it an "inside joke", exactly? And, I understand it's wrong, but it just seems strange that blacks can go around saying it, but it's a society crime to say it if you're white.

That's true but like you said yourself their are always exceptions. Its not fair to stereotype because as we all know everyone is born differently from each other despite how some look the same. No one really looks the same unless their twins, etc.

Gay is a stereotype, though IMO. People use the words gay and the word (BAN ME PLEASE) a lot to use as a negative word like a curse word. However this is kind of stereotyping to gay people.

Well I don't know I just think its societal acceptable for blacks to say the N to each other. They only use it as a joke, afterall. However it is unfair to say it in a negative way towards each other for example my classmates saying Barack is a (N word) and just laughing (they are white btw).

Quoting this for the truth, it's impossible to be completely unbiased or stereotypical, you have to be to at least a certain extent. You not going to not think that there's obviously something odd about a hobo walking around in a high class establishment or something.

But if Kristy is trying to ask if you have like really bad stereotypes like some guy just randomly socks you in the face and calls you a chink or something along those lines, that's probably passed down behavior from their environment. I've had something stereotypical that happened to me, who hasn't. I remember one time when I visited my cousins house one summer, the neighbors threw a glass bottle at the backyard door that shattered over the ground and said some crap about Chinese being better Vietnamese or something like that, we ended up calling the cops about that.

I can't imagine going to a school where a majority of the kids are racist, however, that must really suck Kristy. But, it seems that they just see it as a joke calling Obama the N word =/.

Edit:
I agree but its OKAY if black people call themselves the N word
I'm sorry but this statement is completely stupid. It is definitely fucking not okay for anyone to say the n word white, black, mexican, etc.. The fact that people think it's okay angers me because they're so fucking ignorant, they think it's funny that they're stereotyping themselves. Sure it's a "joke" but if they don't want people to call them the N word then don't fucking use it themselves.

Well now your stereotyping people in a bad way yourself, your saying it's okay for black people to do one thing but it's not okay for white people to do the same? I find that stupid and I'm sorry for saying that but it is.

That's not really true many of the students at my school are really good kids there are only a handful of them that are really stereotypical.

And I know its completely impossible to be non stereotypical since we all judge books by their covers sometimes but that doesn't mean that some people have to blurt things out. They might think its bad that Obama is a president but why don't they keep that to themselves instead of take it out as a joke?

Maybe it's just me, but I absolutely hate it when black people call themselves "The N word" >:[

No, it's not okay for you if it's not okay for us, fuck you

I go to a school where blacks are the majority and people throw around the N word like it's nothing. I've been called it and I'm white. (There is no one openly racist at my school either.) I think some people just hear it so much they forget what it means. However, I think that white people who think it's funny to call our President the N word are just ignorant. Every race may be different, but we also have so much in common and we are all human.

First off, it just makes me mad that people hate Mr. Obama. He's the president. Live with it, god damn it. >_>

As for stereotypes...People try to stick the "Band Geek" tag on me, but the band geeks at my school are far from the pocket-protector-bearing spcies of geeks. We're more the beat-the-shit-out-of-you type.

People also try to get me with the "Teachers' Pet" thing, just because I'm in the top five percent of my class and have more brain cells than the average whore. And that I actually care about my grades.

But ignorance is bliss. =D I honest to gods go around school ignoring everything that moves. Bottom line, stupid people need to die.

EDIT: Also, racism sucks. I'm white, but one of my best friends is about as black as it gets. And I know a bunch of Asians, too. -_- It figures. I come from one of the worst schools in the area, where we're to busy killing each other to care about race.

When I went to Chicago a couple of years ago, I met a few people that thought all southerns run around with no shoes or shirts on and wear straw hats and overalls. >_> I don't know if that is sterotyping or just being dumb.

Growing up as a Chinese person in an affluent and predominantly white British town, stereotyping was something I just had to live with. People use stereotypes because:

1. They know no better
2. They are fooling around and mean no harm
3. They are prejudiced and therefore ignorant

Stereotyping is not bad per se. Only 3 is a problem.

And people always use the word gay which is VERY offensive IMO to gay people.
I am puzzled by this statement.
What relevance does your opinion have to people finding phrases offensive?

It's amusing that you think black people should freely use the word "(BAN ME PLEASE)" to refer to each other but think it's such a terrible word that you won't spell it out.

Maybe it's just me, but I absolutely hate it when black people call themselves "The N word" >:[

Oooh that's an interesting way to look at it. Double standards. :P

Oh yep just like what Atryoki said but in a personal experience... I;m glad no one in your school is racist.

Racism does suck but I am glad that you aren't racist. I don't think you should ignore people that are stupid either, ignorant yes but not stupid.

o.o; Yeahh that's just dumb.

Wow I have a similar problem to yours except I'm not Chinese. However it is hard for people to stereotype me because I'm mixed Latina and Japanese so they can't really tell. XD

On the internet, people refer to me as the village idiot.

But on the outside, No one wants to fuck with me in a trivia contest if you follow me.

Its kinda like spiderman.

It is a shame though, I just happen to read more books than they do.

Well speaking as a black person, I feel that we tend to use the word not as a joke but as a well..... pronoun of sorts honestly. I mean it is NOT right that we call each other that all the time and then make it a national incident when a white person says it but in our (really their I don't like to say it because if someone hears me say it then they'll just think it's fine for them to say it) defense it's really more as if we are trying to take an insult and make it ours (really a very American thing, like yankee for example). Now as for stereotyping i happen to go to a predominately white school so at first I think they were expecting me to act "ghetto or hood" but after a month or so they all seem to understand that black people have different personalities just like everyone else and have accepted me as I am. (more later if I can)

On the internet people could be cruel so just ignore them.

He's the President, and I have every right to criticize the President if I think he's doing stupid shit (which from my perspective he certainly is). It's not like people treated Bush with grace and respect. I mean, is "OBAMA IZ AN EVIL MUZLIM!!!!11" really that much different in the degree of hate with "BUSH STOLE THE ELECSHUN AND WORKS FOR OIL COMPANIEZ!!!"?
As for stereotyping: the human person does not have the time to format deep and complex opinions about everyone he meets - he frequently has to form snap judgements about people. If a group of people act similarily, he is justified in making assumptions about said group. Is it right in the moral sense? No. But that's life.

Kristy, I live in a predominantly white neighborhood(I'm black) and believe me there was plenty outrage and disgusting slurs said when Obama was elected.

To address your question of "Do People Stereotype" me, the answer is yes. Being an African-American living in a predominately white area; due to their lack of contact with blacks they take what they see on the media and oftentimes prescribe it to me. (That I'm ghetto, a thug, etc). It really does annoy me to no end. Oh, and I've been asked the question "Why can blacks use the N-word but whites can't". I never gave them a direct answer because it shows their close-mindedness. I'm an African-American and I don't use the word because I think it's absolutely disgusting.

I agree with you but I would say that all of the 3 that you listed can be harmful not just the last. I've had comments made by people, then afterwords said it was a joke. I didn't find it funny and I found the comment of "lighten up" even more condescending than their joke. Different people handle things different ways I guess.

----

Ignorance on an issue can only let a person slide so far. If people took a bit more energy to treat others as an individual then many problems wouldn't even happen. I guess "human nature" can be attributed to forming snap judgments about a certain group of people, but I've met those that did not.

I'm going to give those a 2nd chance if they say or do something that I don't approve of (Obviously this wouldn't apply in the workplace, if you want to keep your job).
