Okay, in light of new evidence that Jellicent's video is a ruse, a mashup to make it seem like she was covering Firework, I'm dropping it down to 8.3 points. The original is still plenty bad, but this was way better when I thought it was real. That ties Jellicent in 10th with Former Hope and brings Cancerous up to 8th.
I asked Martin to send a different submission after he sent a bunch of noises from a video game. I don't think he got this category? Why would I ever listen to this song? Unless I was a child, in which case it wouldn't be a weird song anymore.
"This song is weird mechanically" bitch you think I don't know what a 6/8 scale is? We've had weirder scales in other categories. At least this song sounds pretty good for Blink-182.
KOC also suggested the incredibly normal for New Wave song "She Was" by the Talking Heads on the grounds that it was about satanic possession. I can't help but think he picked this song on similar grounds, but who cares? You'd have to try harder than this for lyrics to really be weird. The fact that the song is slightly alternative does more for that.
Spoilers, Myzo submitted Bjork 5 times. And this was the least weird Bjork song... by a lot. It sounds early 90s as fuck. Even her singing fits here. It's too mundane for me to even really like it as a Bjork song.
This has the banjo and piano, but still manages to sound like a lot of indie songs from the era. I think Sam just sent me an indie song. Not trying very hard.
Is this just weird cause it's a metal? I don't know enough metal to think this is that weird. There's some beep boop sounds in it, which are cool, but it sounds pretty normal otherwise.
This sounds like Dynasty Warriors music, which I like, but I can think of much better examples of. This song meanders around, which might be the weird part? It has some good instrumentation, but never says anything to me.
I can't fathom how 2000s era Pet Shop Boys are this lit. This is rad as hell. It doesn't sound 80s, but also doesn't sound like they're trying to conform.
Did not notice this was a MLP song until the second time I listened. Still, this song is really great. It's hard to even pinpoint what I like about it, it's hard to describe, so it must be a good submission.
My original sub wasn't video game noises; it was the opening track from a Kikuo+Hantan album which used various synths/instruments to imitate the sounds of a theatre, from the curtain raising alarm sound to the drinks being poured from cans into cups and using samples of an audience murmering too.
