DP Porygon2

It's under the 'opinion' section, and I feel it is appropriate. As Lee says, there probably are, but they don't get Recover and etc. In my eyes, and a lot of other people's eyes, it is the best and most cited. And Traced Intimidate actually adds a lot. Not many Pokemon switch in to DD Gyarados after the boost, even less to force it to switch and abandon its set-up.

Waiting for a mod to upload this, please. =) Unless there is any more that needs to be discussed.

I can post here now! They still won't let me make threads though. Damn "rules" and my "rudeness".

Porygon2 is THE best Trick Room lead. Gyarados dies to Thunderbolt if you predict a Taunt. I definitley think that Trick Room should be a set for him and not just an Other Option. It's not like he has too many sets.

Standard Trick Room Lead
Porygon2 @ Leftovers / Muscle Band
EVs: whatever the defensive set is with -speed nature.
IVs: 0 Spd (by the way, why do so many random sets have a 0 Atk IV on the SCMS?)
Ability: Trace
- Trick Room
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Recover / Tri Attack

A great Trick Room lead. Thunderbolt should scare Gyarados away and stop it from Taunting you, while Ice Beam takes out the strangely-common Salamence and Garchomp starts. Recover is there for healing, but you can throw Tri Attack there if you must.

Second, Sharpen Porygon2 should be mentioned because after one Sharpen with ~230 Attack EVs (I'll get the exact number), Return 2HKO's Blissey, who switches in on Pory2 a lot. Can be combined with Trick Room so you can use those other 270ish EVs entirely for Defenses. A Download boost will also 2HKO without Sharpen, but Trace is ten times better.

Sharpen Trick Room
Porygon2 @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Atk / 28 Def / 100 SDef; Brave
- Trick Room
- Sharpen
- Return
- Thunderbolt / Shadow Claw? / Recover

A Sharpened Return is guaranteed to 2HKO Blissey with these EVs; a nasty surprise for her. Use Thunderbolt to counter Gyarados or Shadow Claw? to hit Ghosts.

He is the very best Gyarados counter, but Gyarados isn't exactly hard to counter. Mesprit does it perfectly and isn't even weak to a certain Electivire.

It's a shame he doesn't get Calm Mind or Nasty Plot, for he's a lot less frail than Z and can tank with either. Also, every Zapdos lead has max HP.

If you can survive Porygon2 for two or three turns and KO it in the process, you are likely a counter
Isn't that the case for every pokemon?
remains one of the author's favorites.
I'm confused...
Ice Beam is an option for hitting them, but Magnezone walls you either way.
Magnezone walls IT, not you

Otherwise, this is a great guide.
Nitpicking more later

I think by Muscle Band you mean Wise Glasses.

-Speed +Def is Relaxed.

These look like reasonably good sets overall. Trick Room + setting up is kinda iffy, so it may be wise to give Porygon2 Adamant/Brave (only if using Thunderbolt) and give him Shadow Claw/Thunderbolt as well as Recover.

EDIT: I ended up having a very busy day and I will now address several of the new points coming up. =/

@Chris: For the Trick Room set-up lead, I myself personally use it, but everything should be thrown into its defenses. On such a set, Recover should always be used, as Trick Room set-ups must be kept alive for as long as possible. I wanted to address that seeing as you have no spread listed. The nature should be Relaxed (-Spd, + Def). What is Muscle Band on there for? For the hold item, Lum Berry should be used as a lead, as many double-statusers will otherwise rain down upon you and set-up on the switch. You want to render your opponent's speedy teams useless as soon as possible.

Sharpen + Trick Room is fail, unfortunately. It pales in comparison with the many Swords Dance sweepers that benefit from it and loses the coverage Bolt-beam provides.

I've heard the Mesprit argument many times, but P2's main selling points that serve to its advantage are a) Recover, b) Trace, and an arguably lesser one, c) typing.

@Jibaku- For the first statement, I had to point out the obvious. I will eventually edit out the second statement (heh, I like P2 too much xD), and I edited out the third. Nitpickers are needed here, really. xD This is my first peer edit.

@Mekkah- The only reason Trick Room is another option is because I believe there is a rule that says that another set shouldn't be introduced just because of one move. Of course, because you're stating this here, I'll go ahead and edit in my own Trick Room P2 in a little while.

In my opinion, Tri-Attack is treating it like Porygon-Z if placed on one of the sets. The reason I posted this analysis in the first place is because the current one up treats it as a special sweeper, while I see it more as a lead/support in the case of Trick Room and even the weathers in some cases. Sure, it has base 105 BP after STAB, but it provides little coverage compared to, say, a Hidden Power.

Alright, I'm sorry for the necromancy, but I'm bumping this thread because the Porygon2 analysis seriously needs updating. Even this is kind of outdated, but at least it's not as outdated as the current one on the SCMS. If there are any changes to be made here, please list them. We need to put this updated analysis on the SCMS as soon as possible so that we can finally have a fresh Porygon2 analysis.

Once again, there's no need for another P-2 thread, just post any new sets here and such, and then we can put this on the SCMS and get it cached. I only bumpd this one because it was the only P-2 peer edit there.

EDIT: Nature should not be Bold on the first set. It should be Calm with EVs at 240 HP/160 Def/92 SpAtk/16 SpDef. This allows it 3 less HP with the same defenses, but that ACTUAL special attack stat (269) needed to OHKO Garchomp.

It doesn't seem like AoK is coming back anytime soon, so I'll write this analysis up, but you guys need to pitch more set because I've only used a couple of P-2 sets, but it has a huge movepool, so there's a lot of viable sets for it.

Thanks in advance for pitching some sets, it'll help me out greatly.

EDIT: DONE.

I do think Trick Room needs more mention still. Porygon 2 is a great Pokemon to have trick room and then kill dragons and gyarados with a few dds or even scarfgar. Something like:

Porygon 2: Leftovers
Sassy / Quiet Nature
EVS: 252 HP, 108 SpD, 68 Def, 80 SpA
-Ice Beam
-Trick Room
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball / Tri Attack

Edit: Someone else already said this, I didn't even see it somehow. But you should update it because it does warrent mention.

I think it just needs some mention and is more worthy then "extra options". Especially over the recycle one.

Porygon 2 is one of the few decent TRs that isn't pursuit weak, which does go on its favour. It can also use recover and stay around longer to constatntly set up TR.

Granted , it is not its best set but it is worthy of a set, definatly.

[SET COMMENTS]

Porygon2 can handle several popular leads with ease, as Ice Beam and Discharge provide excellent coverage with only being Lanturn, Shedinja and Magnezone as resistors of the combination; none of which you would ever see as a lead. If it cannot kill something, rest assured that it will not go down without a fight, as it can cripple quick leads with Thunder Wave, or if you choose, it can send incoming statuses flying back towards the opponent's face with Magic Coat, which gets priority and that's nice for overriding Porygon2's slow speed.

Discharge is recommended over Thunderbolt on this set because Discharge allows Porygon2 to pull off a possible double-status if it happens to reflect any status back with Magic Coat prior to that. In addition, Porygon2 is not an offensive-based Pokemon, but is much more supportive-based, and Discharge assists with this strength. However, if you wish to use Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave can go over Magic Coat as your statusing move for an easier paralysis.

Leftovers is a given as a hold item to a support-based Pokemon, but Lum Berry can work as well to rid Porygon2 of status as it occurs, because you already have Recover to get your health back, so Leftovers isn't a requirement.

With this EV spread, Porygon2 survives Salamence's Draco Meteor and has extra Defense to take repeated hits from Gyarados and friends. This spread also survives a +2 Earthquake from Jolly Garchomp, as long as it doesn't have Life Orb, and retaliates with enough Special Attack to OHKO a 4 HP / 0 Def / 0 SpD variation of Garchomp. Special Defense EVs can be moved to Defense if you're not concerned with beating Salamence leads.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set may seem quite similar to "Upgrade THIS!", however, it is played quite differently because of the perks received from Trick Room, but is still used as a lead. Being one of the few Trick Room users not weak to Pursuit, it can switch out nice and easily and actually be able to come back in later to attempt Trick Room again. Discharge is not an option on this set as trying to paralyze the opponent in Trick Room is counter-productive. Tri Attack is offered as an option on this set because it offers strong special STAB and gives even more chances for status. It's also a good option on this set because this set is more geared to setting up Trick Room than actually countering common leads, although most leads are fast, so it does counter them in a way.

One big pro for Trick Room Porygon2 is that his Recover becomes extremely quick during Trick Room conditions, allowing him to shrug off hits much easier than the "Upgrade THIS!" variation. It should be noted that Porygon2 is one of the few Trick Room users that actually have access to a reliable recovery move that isn't hindered by weather or that causes him to be asleep for 2 turns.

The EV spread here is a bit different than the other variant of this set. The difference is that Special Attack is much more appreciated on this set because Porygon2 will be able to fire off its attacks at a much higher speed under Trick Room. This is why a +SpA nature is a good idea on this set, however, a +SpD nature works just as well since it helps the reasoning for Recover.

[SET]
Set name: NOT a Porygon-Z Wannabe
Move 1: Charge Beam
Move 2: Ice Beam
Move 3: Tri Attack
Move 4: Recover
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

First off, this set, as the title states is not a Porygon-Z wannabe. The reason for this is that it's much more bulky because the low speed makes it less worthwhile to invest in, making HP EVs a necessity.

The Charge Beam set is no joke, and Porygon2 can be just as ruthless as Porygon-Z when it comes to this kind of thing. When something with 339 Special Attack to start off with is boosting its stats while doing damage at the same time, it's extremely painful. Then there's the fact that it can actually Recover its health after it's done enough Charge Beams, and take hits like a champ while it's at it. Tri Attack will be a deadly STAB after about 2 boosts.

This is the only set where both traits are viable, because Download may help the offensive nature of the set, but beware that it's not all that reliable, and that you had better be switching in on a Pokemon with higher defense than special defense.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Agility is an option for those who don't enjoy Porygon2's absymal speed. Psych Up can annoy any opponent, especially Calm Minders.

Hidden Power [Ground] or [Fighting] take down Magnezone, Heatran, Weavile, and Tyranitar, but those are the only things that those moves are good for and they don't do much against anything else.

Porygon2 has a lot in the way of novelty moves, which can be devastating if used correctly. The prime of these are the exclusive Conversion and Conversion 2, which coupled with decent defenses and excellent recovery, can annoy the opponent immensely.

Leppa Berry and Recycle make a small mention, as a Recycle Porygon2 participated in the longest Netbattle match ever. In other words, let your PP and recovery be the Energizer Battery: keep going and going and going and going....

Toxic is usable over Thunder Wave/Magic Coat on the "Upgrade THIS!" set, but it's not recommended, because Magic Coat helps Porygon2 counter leads a lot better, and Thunder Wave is recommended over Toxic due to the more offensive nature of D/P.

[EVs]

Porygon2 is difficult to come up with universal EVs. It can be tailored to any need, but can become too specialized and essentially useless except to the things it was designed to get rid of. The suggested EVs for Porygon2 are a lot more of a guideline of what to spread to use than what is the best, because simply, it is a jack-of-all-trades.

[OPINION]

A super-fun-happy Pokemon to use, as it can do almost anything. Porygon2 can make a nice mixed tank, unlike the only other Tracer, Gardevoir. It also craps out status effects as if it had a big sneeze and sprayed its disgusting bacteria everywhere with every status effect possible. In the beginning of D/P, people did not notice this lowly drinking bird, but Porygon2 is starting to feel some sweet lovin' due to Trace making several top OU baddies cry (eg. Gyarados). Unfortunately, its versatility leads to a downfall: it can be tailored to do anything, but as we all know from real life, multi-tasking is hard, and Porygon2 finds it hard as well. Essentially, he's good at everything, but not great at anything. However, Porygon2 is destructive to any opponent's team if used correctly, and is usable in OU to the extreme. He is truly the drinking bird from hell.

[COUNTERS]

If you can survive Porygon2 for two or three turns and KO it in the process, you are likely a counter. Fast or bulky Choice sweepers, especially those with a decent Fighting-type move, will either KO it or force it out. Prime examples include Heracross and Machamp, both of whom welcome Guts status and score STAB super effective attacks against it. Blissey also walls it completely. Again, anything that Porygon2 fails to kill or has a decent offense will obliterate the Cyber Duck, however, it often comes at the price of getting statused.

Alright, I gave this a shot. I didn't really change the counter section. I removed that crappy Recycle set, I was going to keep it at first, but then I looked at it again and saw how crappy it was since it seemed like one of the most unreliable sets ever.

I fixed up the first set with what I've seen people using on P-2 recently, because the 1st set is obviously the standard.

I added the Trick Room set since it seemed like it was in pretty high demand for addition. I'm not totally sure about the EVs though, they seem weird.

I added the Charge Beam set for pure special attacking, with a little tidbit about why it's not completely obsolete to Porygon-Z. If anyone has a better EV spread for that, then pitch it in, but I've seen this set used before and it worked really well.

I changed the Other Options section a bit by taking away some stuff from it that was actually added into the sets, and then I added Toxic into it, because I felt it was just inferior to the other status moves that P-2 has.

I changed the EV spread on the 1st set so it could actually guarantee the OHKO on Garchomp with 269 special attack.

Alright, so fixing, editing such and such?

Yeah use Thunderbolt since you want speed, as well as higher base power. Paralyzing them in Trick Room is stupid.

Alright, good point. Change is done.

I'll leave this up for today, but at the end of the day, after all edits are taken into consideration, I'll put this on the SCMS for a mod to cache.

EDIT: Added to the SCMS, I just need a mod to cache it now.
