DPP Magnezone (Boosting Sweeper)

I've tested this set, and when I actually got to use it (i.e. when the rest of my team didn't win first), it was able to sweep more often than not. I have saved some of the logs. They are not any particular ones, just random ones were Magnezone was used. I know that at least a few of them show sweeps.

[SET]
Name: Charge It Up!
Move 1: Thunderbolt
Move 2: Hidden Power Ice
Move 3: Charge Beam
Move 4: Substitute
Nature: Timid
Ability: Magnet Pull
Item: Salac Berry
EVs: 76 HP / 252 SpA / 180 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Unlike other Magnezone sets, this one focuses on setting up for a sweep, rather than revenge killing. Magnezone can use Charge Beam, Magnet Pull, and good defenses to set up, while still providing its team with key resistances. Charge Beam is the driving force of this set, as it enables Magnezone to raise its already mighty Special Attack. Substitute offers this set several things. Most importantly, it allows Magnezone to activate Salac Berry and raise its poor Speed to acceptable levels. It also gives Magnezone a shield against opponents that outspeed it. Finally, it protects Magnezone from debilitating status effects, especially paralysis. Thunderbolt and Hidden Power Ice offer Magnezone the greatest possible type coverage, being resisted in OU only by opposing Magnezone. Hidden Power Grass is also an option to hit Swampert or Mamoswine, but several other Pokemon will now wall you, such as Celebi and Latias. Flash Cannon gets STAB and can easily OHKO Tyranitar, Rhyperior, and Mamoswine after a boost, but it can't touch Swampert.

Magnezone hits 331 Speed after a Salac boost with 180 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, outspeeding +Speed base 100 Pokemon and the common MixApe. Special Attack is maxed so that Magnezone will hit as hard as possible. The remaining EVs are allocated to HP, creating sturdier Substitutes, with Salac Berry activating after three uses. Being resistant to Extremespeed, Bullet Punch, and Ice Shard, Magnezone does not have to fear priority attacks aside from the rare Mach Punch or Vacuum Wave. Using 228 HP/100 Def/84 SAtk/96 SDef as the EV spread along with Leftovers, Magnezone can more easily set up on stall teams. With this spread, it can survive 4 Seismic Tosses from Blissey at full HP, and take three Bullet Punches from Scizor per Substitute while still having the necessary power to deal with other Pokemon, especially after several boosts. If outrunning max Speed Adamant Scizor is a priority, then 36 EVs should be shifted to Speed from HP.

While many Pokemon are able to effectively use a SubSalac set, Magnet Pull gives Magnezone a distinct advantage. With Magnet Pull, Magnezone can easily set up on Steel-types such as Scizor or Jirachi locked into a resisted attack. Magnezone also is immune to sand damage, unlike Jolteon and Rotom. Once Magnezone has accumulated enough boosts, it can easily kill the helpless Pokemon and proceed to sweep. Because of the popularity of Steel-type Pokemon, Magnezone should have no trouble finding a way to set up.

The easiest way to beat this Magnezone is by either using a Pokemon that is faster than it or one that will survive an attack. In OU, Magnezone has the most trouble with Swampert, Rotom, Azelf, Gengar, Latias, Starmie, and Blissey. A specially defensive Tyranitar or Scizor can easily take out the four faster Psychic- and Ghost-types with Pursuit and severely damage Blissey. Swampert is handled by any Pokemon with a Grass-type attack, such as Infernape or Celebi, and is incapacitated by Toxic or Toxic Spikes. Blissey can be beaten by most physically-oriented sweepers, particularly those with a Fighting-type move. Dugtrio also deserves a mention due to its ability to trap and kill Blissey and beat Azelf and Gengar through either Sucker Punch or Pursuit. Paralysis will help enable a sweep by crippling any opposing Choice Scarfers. Finally, "Pursuit-bait" Pokemon such as Rotom and Latias and "Bullet Punch-bait" Pokemon like Gengar and Tyranitar are excellent additions to your team since they will easily lure out Scizor and Jirachi. This will allow Magnezone to come in after a kill and set up on a resisted attack.

Tricking a Choice item onto virtually any Steel-type Pokemon is the best way to facilitate a Magnezone sweep. The best candidates for this role are Rotom, Gengar, and Latias. All three resist or are immune to Fighting- and Ground-type attacks, Magnezone's two most common weaknesses, while Latias has the added benefit of resisting Fire-type attacks. This means an opposing Pokemon will almost never select an attack that is effective against Magnezone. Magnezone can then switch in on the most likely resisted attack and set up Substitutes and Charge Beams.

[SET COMMENTS]

Magnezone can use its unique ability in conjunction with its excellent typing to set up several stat boosts, allowing it to become a formidable endgame sweeper.

This set utilizes Magnezone's ability to trap Steel-types, its resistance to many moves, and its excellent defenses to set up for a sweep.(imo the underlined section can be removed completely. it doesn't add any new info to the analysis [the first line already says something similar] and the general wording is kind of awkward) Charge Beam is the driving force of this set, as it enables Magnezone to raise its already mighty Special Attack several times. Substitute has multiple things to offer to this set. Most importantly, it allows Magnezone to activate its Salac Berry and raise its poor Speed to acceptable levels. It also allows Magnezone to have a shield against opponents that either are not beaten in one hit, or are faster. Finally, it protects Magnezone from debilitating status effects, especially paralysis. Thunderbolt and Flash Cannon both get STAB and offer Magnezone the greatest possible type coverage, hitting everything neutral (removed "or better", unnecessary) except Swampert and Electric-types.

Magnezone will be able to hit 332 Speed after a Salac boost with 180 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, outspeeding +Speed nature base 100 Pokemon and the ubiquitous Mixape. Special Attack is maxed so that Magnezone will hit as hard as possible. The remaining EVs are allocated to HP, permitting more robust Substitutes to be created with Salac Berry activating after three uses.

While many Pokemon are able to effectively use a SubSalac set, Magnezone has one distinct advantage over other candidates: Magnet Pull. With Magnet Pull, Magnezone can easily set up on Steel-types such as Scizor or Jirachi locked into a resisted attack, taking only paltry damage from their onslaught. Magnezone also is immune to sand damage, which is the bane of many sets like this.

(removed an extra period) In OU, the Pokemon Magnezone will have the most trouble with are Swampert, Rotom, Azelf, Gengar, Latias, Starmie, and Blissey. A specially defensive Tyranitar or Scizor can easily take out the four faster Psychic- and Ghost-types with Pursuit, as well as severely damage or even KO Blissey. Swampert can be easily handled by any Pokemon with a Grass-type attack such as Infernape or Celebi, and is incapacitated by Toxic or Toxic Spikes. Blissey can be beaten by most physically-oriented sweepers, particularly those with a Fighting-type move. Dugtrio also deserves a mention due to its ability to trap and kill Blissey, and beat Azelf and Gengar through either Sucker Punch or Pursuit.

I thought this set was written clearly and cleverly, good job. The only addition I'd like to throw out there is Leftovers over a Salac Berry. While I've never tried a set such as this, Leftovers would allow Magnezone to take resisted choice attacks from Steels better and would make it less vulnerable to priority, etc. Another possible mention is that Magnezone 4x resists Bullet Punch and 2x resists Extreemespeed, which helps it pull this off.

I've had someone else mention that too, but the reason I chose to leave leftovers out is that Magnezone cannot outspeed enough things to sweep without it. Heatran, Salamence, Infernape, Metagross, Lucario, Gyarados, etc all outspeed it unless it has the Salac boost. While Leftovers will aid its survivability, it will probably only be able to get 1, maybe 2 kills instead of sweeping a team. It is an interesting idea though, especially with a lot of paralysis support, and might be worth testing.

tbh this looks pretty cool and and Magnezone's ability gives it a reason to be used over Rotom's, though I wonder how well Magneton could do the job, as that can outspeed Starmie and the like after a Salac boost. Though I am not too sure

I remember fighting this thing a few days ago. I don't know if it was you, but I do remember that, when given the chance, it can break stall quite handily.

I think you should menion how this set is more worthwile than Jolteon's and Rotom-A's SubCharge set, as that will be very convincing if it'll be up on the site.

I also think that Leftovers is a bit more worthwile than Salac Berry, as the Leftovers recovery will help you against Blissey and the like when your HP is starting to get low due to repeated Substitutes. Besides, you can always set-up substitutes on walls and some steel types so that you won't be revenge killed.

Magneton loses Special Attack, HP, and Defense, all of which are vital to the set. Magnezone can just barely 2HKO a few Pokemon with HP Ice with +2 (this set will usually end up with +2 or +3 when fully set up), and since Magneton loses a good deal of Special Attack, it will not be able to get the KO.

Yeah, just wondering

I think yoiu should mention something about paralysis support could help Zone

Good set, but I think a Knock Off strategy should be added to the team options. This allows Magnezone to trap Foretress solely who run Shed Shell, making its job much easier to set up, as suppose to Pokemon like Jirachi who get a couple of flinches in from Iron Head before setting up, making your Charge Beam set up harder to do. Paralysis support needs a mention as well, other than that good job.

This is a cool set Grayscale, I beleive this set is worth the analysis. I might test this out later today, but otherwise it's a nice set.

To be honest, the only problem you will have is the rare HP Ground Magnezone, which walls this set decently (I don't know how much it takes from a +2 T-Bolt) with it's bulk, traps Magnezone itself, and then can OHKO Magnezone with HP Ground.

Otherwise, it's great. Keep up the good work.

I've played against something similar before and it swept my stall, definitely a good set! I think it came in on Rotom-h and then Charge Beamed as I went to Blissey and Charge Beamed again as I used Softboiled and then possibly Charge Beamed again before sweeping with Thunderbolt. The logs provided also back up this set's effectiveness.

Also, at the above post: Magnezone is not immune to Thunder Wave and HP Ground Magnezone is rarely to never seen, you might as well say HP Electric Scizor beats RestTalk Gyarados or something!

edit: Maybe Leftovers could be mentioned because they allow it to beat stall teams more easily, whereas Salac Berry is more suited to letting it beat offensive teams.

While the set looks good and the content of the write up is mostly spot on, I feel like your analysis has a lot of superfluous fluff.

<jumpluff>
Magnezone can use its unique ability in conjunction with its excellent typing to set up several stat boosts, allowing it to become a formidable endgame sweeper.
<jumpluff> change this to
<jumpluff> Magnezone has a special ability and cool typing, so it sweeps real good.

While jumpluff's suggestion is obviously on the facetious side, the point stands; reword your stuff. It comes across as slightly pretentious, and you can say the same information in a different way to make your writing easier to read.

Magnezone will be able to hit 332 Speed after a Salac boost with 180 Speed EVs and a Timid nature
Not true, with the given EVs you get 221 Speed before a boost, meaning after the boost you have a stat of 331 (it gets rounded down). It's still enough to outspeed +Speed base 100s and neutral base 115s, so you don't need to change the EVs, just this sentence.

Other than that the set looks pretty cool.

LR: Thanks, I fixed that.

Darkie, that's just how I write. I don't think I'd be able to change how I've worded this without changing my entire writing style, something I've found pretty difficult to do. If there are individual sentences that are especially problematic, I would be able to re-word those, but re-writing the entire thing in a different style would be like trying to grow an extra arm.

[SET COMMENTS]

Magnezone has a unique ability and excellent typing to set up several stat boosts on Steel-types, allowing it to become a formidable endgame sweeper. Charge Beam is the driving force of this set, as it enables Magnezone to raise its already high Special Attack several times. Substitute has multiple things to offer this set. Most importantly, it allows Magnezone to activate its Salac Berry and raise its poor Speed to acceptable levels. It also allows Magnezone to have a shield against opponents that are either not beaten in one hit, or are faster. Finally, it protects Magnezone from debilitating status effects, especially paralysis. Thunderbolt and Hidden Power Ice offer Magnezone the greatest possible type coverage, being resisted in OU only by opposing Magnezone. Hidden Power Grass is also an option if Swampert or Mamoswine is troubling you, but several other Pokemon will now wall you (like?). Flash Cannon gets STAB and can easily OHKO Tyranitar, Rhyperior, and Mamoswine, but Swampert will barely be 3HKOed. (Is this with the boost? From my experience it won't OHKO Tyranitar and Rhyperior)

Need to go for now

...continued

Magnezone will be able to hit 331 Speed after a Salac boost with 180 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, outspeeding +Speed base 100 Pokemon and the ubiquitous MixApe. Special Attack is maxed so that Magnezone will hit as hard as possible. The remaining EVs are allocated to HP, allowing sturdier Substitutes, with Salac Berry activating after three uses. Being resistant to Extremespeed, Bullet Punch, and Ice Shard, Magnezone does not have to fear priority attacks aside from the rare Mach Punch or Vacuum Wave. Leftovers can help Magnezone set up against slower Pokemon such as those on a stall team, although the loss of Speed hurts (removed "it").

While many Pokemon are able to effectively use a SubSalac set, Magnezone has one distinct advantage over other candidates: Magnet Pull. With Magnet Pull, Magnezone can easily set up on Steel-types such as Scizor or Jirachi locked into a resisted attack, taking only paltry damage from their attacks. Magnezone is also immune to sand damage, unlike Jolteon and Rotom.

In OU, the Pokemon Magnezone will have the most trouble with are Swampert, Rotom, Azelf, Gengar, Latias, Starmie, and Blissey. A specially defensive Tyranitar or Scizor can easily take out the four faster Psychic- and Ghost-types with Pursuit, as well as severely damage Blissey. Swampert can be easily handled by any Pokemon with a Grass-type attack, such as Infernape or Celebi, and is incapacitated by Toxic or Toxic Spikes. Blissey can be beaten by most physically-oriented sweepers, particularly those with a Fighting-type move. Dugtrio also deserves a mention due to its ability to trap and kill Blissey and beat Azelf and Gengar through either Sucker Punch or Pursuit. Paralysis support will help in sweeping by crippling any Choice Scarf users on the opposing team.

These are the only instances I can suggest "loosening". Honestly I didn't feel this analysis was particularily bad but it could be improved still.

[SET COMMENTS]

Magnezone can use its unique ability and its excellent typing to set up several stat boosts, making it a formidable endgame sweeper. Charge Beam is the driving force of this set, as it enables Magnezone to raise its already mighty Special Attack several times. Substitute offers this set multiple things (Active voice over passive voice). Most importantly, it allows Magnezone to activate its Salac Berry and raise its poor Speed to acceptable levels. It also gives Magnezone (Active Voice) a shield against opponents that either are not OHKOed, or are faster. Finally, it protects Magnezone from debilitating status effects, especially paralysis. Thunderbolt and Flash Cannon both get STAB and offer Magnezone the greatest possible type coverage, hitting everything neutral except Swampert and Electric-types.

alot of my replacements are there because the use of passive voice makes the analysis drag on, and I shortened sentences to make it short, sweet, and to the point. Also, you tended to use big words that not all readers would know, and I replaced them with easier words. You still get the same effect, it is just easier to read.
EX) I would rather read "This magnezone can OHKO magikarp" than "With the given moves, EVs, and magnezone's natural special prowess, magikarp is easily OHKOed."

Changes updated. I used a combination of everyone's edits. Thanks for the help.

Rawrcray0nz, thanks for changing things to active voice. That does help shorten things a bit, and I'll try to stop writing in passive most of the time.

It does read a lot better now. One more thing I noticed was that the analysis isn't very consistent in terms of "you" and "Magnezone". The sentence "agnezone can use Charge Beam, Magnet Pull, and good defenses to set up, while still providing your team with key resistances. ", for example, reads very funnily. I would either change "your" to "his" or "Magnezone's".

Changed to 'its' because Magnezone is genderless. Thanks darkie.

Edit: Changed some of the more troublesome sentences.

Hey Sub/Charge Beam Maggy! I've been using that on the ladder for over nine months and it still works wonderfully. Your build is more Speed oriented (your spread outruns Skarm, mine does not) and mine is a bit more Defense oriented. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at it that'd be great.

Omega Zone (Magnezone) @ Leftovers
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 228 HP/100 Def/84 SAtk/96 SDef
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

228 HP EVs allow it to survive four STosses from Blissey at full HP (and when you want to take down that pink blob you will want to survive as long as possible). This spread hits 352 SAtk and sacrifices some killing power for more modest defenses.

Also, some of my notes from using it:

+2 SAtk Magnezone can OHKO some Naive Heatrans with Tbolt. +3 means you should be beating CM Latias 1v1. If you have to fight a Blissey try to Sub during her Softboileds/Wishes. Magnezone works well in conjunction with Salamence, since they resist each other's weaknesses. Salamence often times lures out Choice Band Bullet Punch Scizor. Being able to trap, set-up, and kill Scizor all behind a Sub really puts your opponent in a tough position. I'm not sure about how many of those your Maggy can take from Scizor, but with my spread it Sub takes three Bullet Punches to break. I may add more to the discussion later, but I'm just falling asleep here.

Keep it up, Dark Talon and you will have a bright future on Smogon.

I think this set is in many ways inferior to Rotom's SubCharge set. If Zone is not using Salac Berry, that hurts his ability to sweep due to bad speed. If he is using Salac Berry, then that limits the number of chances magnezone gets to set up. Rotom does not have this issue due to his adequate speed, and subsequently, his ability to run leftovers on his subcharge set. Rotom's set also has a much easier time against stall, being able to set up in the face of all forms of Blissey except for cm (zone cant set up on flamethrower or seismic toss sets) and easily KO-ing every other member after just a couple of boosts. Zone does not have as many places to set up; the only steel-types zone sets up on are bronzong, non shed-shell skarmory, and non shed shell forretress. Forretress was seen on 6.4% of teams, 20.9% of Forretress used Shed Shell as their item, and 15.9% of them had Earthquake. Bronzong was on 7.7% of teams, and 49% carried Earthquake and a large investment in special defense. 39.1% of Skarmory, who appeared on 7.8% of teams, had shed shell. It just seems like a very situational strategy to me.
