OU DPP OU Teambuilding Competition

The votes are in, the winner for the TyraniBoah building competition was Jeong with four votes. In equal second place were Ran$om_II_Regal, Tizio Potente Ao, Robertshortgrass, and Rackham with two votes each.

From Jeong: https://pokepast.es/0f79a55da3a62c5d

Since it is an even numbered competition, the next theme can be any pokemon with no restrictions, and will be chosen by Jeong as a reward for winning the last competition. If they don’t want to choose, or don’t choose by 07/05/25, then I’ll post a theme by 08/05/25 (GMT).
Once it's announced you win the competition, comment your choice in a new post with the new theme at the top of the message.

There are some rules as to what you are able to pick.
- For every odd teambuilding competition, you can pick any pokemon from the top 30 of the VR (link).
- For every even teambuilding competition, you can pick anything you want with no restrictions.

These rules are in place to ensure that we don’t get too many difficult mons to build with in a row, which has caused inactivity in the past.

You can also choose a set or a theme to build with instead of a pokemon. E.g., Build with banded tyranitar, or build with water spam. You can choose more difficult themes if you wish, but please exercise discretion.

Once picked, your choice can't be changed, so bear that in mind.

With the freedom offered by an even numbered competition, Jeong has chosen a new theme, this time it's Swalot!
any set.png

You can submit any OU team so long as it contains Swalot.
After a clarification from Jeong who chose the theme this time: non OU team entries have been ruled out, as an OU competition only teams from this tier will be accepted for this round.
Other entries will get an honourable mention but wont be able to be voted on.

As usual, the winner of this competition gets to choose the next theme.

Submissions are open now and will most likely close on Saturday April 15, at 11:00 pm GMT. If the theme proves too difficult and there are few submissions, this deadline may be extended. From there we'll move onto voting, which will most likely close on Saturday April 19 at 11:00 pm GMT.
Happy building :)

This is just stall but swalot helps deal with fighting types and can potentially pp stall clef. It can come in pretty safe on Breloom as long as it’s not sd facade so it’s an ok sleep sack, you could also run liquid ooze and shut down leech seed breloom. It also has enough spdef to live 2 fire blasts from infernape and can hit it back with eq. It’s kinda bad wasn’t sure what to do with it but yeah.

I originally tried sub pain split but its hp stat kinda makes it bad at that. Next I thought of using it solely to beat clefable with toxic and gastro acid but I didn’t like it much and didn’t know what to put it on. So I settled on the above team.

This is a ZU Team: https://pokepast.es/2698fcbc9cdfae60
:persian: :Probopass: :Swalot: :Luxray: :Camerupt: :Weepinbell:

The best way I can describe Swalot is that it's a swiss army knife for kids. It has so many great moves but it's not dangerous. Curse with no Poison Jab (only Gunk Shot); great Special coverage moves with no Calm Mind; Encore and Destiny Bond with no speed; and amazing HP but unreliable recovery with Pain Split. But that's why I like it!

This team's focus is to set up Sunny Day and have Weepinbell sweep in the end, but it's not tunnel vision on the win condition. I chose Sun over Rain because Damp Rock is illegal in the tier.
-Persian is the best lead to set up Sunny Day and dip with U-turn.
-Weakened Water moves can help Probopass, especially if Wartortle or Staryu is trying to scare it away. Thunder Wave also helps to stop Choice Scarf Pokemon like Wailord and Quilava.
-Swalot's EVs are designed to have it survive a +1 Earthquake from Whiscash and KO back with Explosion. If anything thinks it can set up on Swalot, Encore can force them to switch. Seed Bomb is for Whiscash and Lunatone, but you can switch it for Ice Beam or Earthquake as well. Just remember to change the nature and EVs if you're using Ice Beam. Sticky Hold so it can switch in on Carnivine and not get Heat Rock knocked off.
-Luxray is really amazing in DPP ZU and I had to include it. I didn't want two Life Orb users so Expert Belt helps longevity. HP Ice over HP Grass for Vibrava and bulky Grass-types. Toxic for Whiscash if it's trying to be sneaky with Substitute + DD.
-I was debating between Choice Specs or Rock Polish Camerupt, but I chose Specs for its wallbreaking power. It's very difficult to switch into a Specs Overheat in the Sun, with only Flareon with Flash Fire able to tank it. Specs Overheat in Sun deals more damage than HP Grass to Water and Rock-types, so HP Grass is mainly if there's no Sun.
-Weepinbell is the strongest Chlorophyll in this tier, and its set is identical to Victreebel. Sleep Powder, Solar Beam and Weather Ball in Sun is self-explanatory. HP Electric over Rock for Pelipper who can just OHKO Weepinbell with Air Slash. Weather Ball in Sun deals more damage than HP Electric on Flying-types, but make sure Stealth Rocks is up because Weepinbell can't OHKO too many Pokemon without it.

Wait, is bringing ZU teams in an OU teambuilding competition allowed

Swalot has a few things going for him that make him a decent answer to Clef. Sticky hold prevents knock-off from being a nuisance and 100 base HP means he's eating seismic toss for breakfast. Because Explosion can be somewhat risky to time, I've run Block on Swalot to act as a trapper. Ideally, he comes in on knock off and traps Clef on the next turn for a safer explosion if possible. Alternatively, he can yawn the clef (or whatever may be trapped) and become somewhat of a poor man's Breloom. I've also run sludge bomb for STAB and the possibility that it might poison anything else. Max special defense allows Swalot to come in on special attackers (Lati, Heatran) absorb a hit, and then either sleep or trap on the next turn. He's also humorously adept at slowing down the likes of Infernape and SD Lucario. For the latter, he can stay in long enough to sleep Lucario.

Swalot isn't a great Pokemon but poison can be kind of an awkward type to deal with and yawn does tend to force switches, this makes him an ideal partner for hazards. Skarmory fits well here because he can come in on ground types/Metagross, which Swalot doesn't much care for. Starmie and Flygon provide both some power and speed, which is sorely needed when running Swalot. Scarf Flygon always feels like it leaves a little on the table, so I run Adamant. Knowing I won't beat the mirror match and Scarf Jirachi is honestly more useful to me than taking the 50/50 gambit and losing in the event of a speed tie. 299 Speed still lets Flygon outspeed Scarf Rotom, +1 Gyara, and Adamant Scarf Lucario.

Despite being kind of Anti-Clef, Clefable makes a good partner for Swalot. Clefable tends to attract Clefable, so knocking off the incoming Clef and then blocking the subsequent knock-off with Swalot is fairly satisfying. I don't think I need to dive into the merits of Clefable. Together with Skarmory, it forms a formidable defensive core. The lead Jirachi provides a bit of physical bulk and beats traditional leads (e.g. Azelf).

I went through a few iterations of this team, it tends to struggle with opposing defensive teams and hazards. Given the defensive utility most of the team members provided, I can't really afford rapid spin on this particular starmie. Swalot actually seems to do his job fairly well once hazards are up. Opponents are generally forced to choose between switching or falling asleep. In a handful of cases I ended up getting some valuable pieces in exchange for Swalot. I will trade Swalot for Heatran or Metagross any day of the week.

Here are some replays (I realize the Empoleon gets swapped out for Starmie):

Swalot causes havoc, trades with Heatran. Didn't even think about bringing in Swalot on the Uxie trick, which would have been hilarious.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen4ou-2337708266

Swalot crits Starmie, eats Infernape for lunch, and then trades with Metagross. A different game without the hax but Swalot does his job here.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen4ou-2337711817-k4ypeh1fshwccvid3s90tmfib729bx7pw

Swalot on Swalot Violence, I almost throw the game after I get tilted by hax.

:jirachi: :swalot: :breloom: :heatran: :swampert: :scizor:

Like YouMeAndRNG, I figure the best thing that Swalot can do is die. This team tries to maximise the chance that Swalot dies a good death:
- Yawn is annoying for the opponent to deal with and can hopefully(?) help draw in their sleep absorber/breloom check
- Yawn also lets Breloom drop Spore -> SD
- Swalot's not doing much with STAB. Ice Beam has decent SE coverage, especially against mons that cause Breloom/Heatran trouble
- Destiny Bond + Explosion + Custap give a few options of how to end it all. There's some redundancy, but having both is useful imo. It's nice to be able to Destiny Bond when the opponent predicts and Explosion and goes for Protect and line up an Explosion afterwards. Custap Destiny Bond can catch some suprise KOs and is a bit more reliable against DDTar, for example.
- Paralysis helps everyone on the team.

In an ideal world, Swalot can help open up a hole for one of the other mons to finish off the battle. Overall, Swalot was not complete dead weight although surprise factor had a lot to do with that. Cautious opponents were able to play around Swalot pretty well.

As a clarification for later teambuilding competitions: Assume OU teams unless otherwise stated. In some past competitions non-OU teams have been allowed because the person who selected the theme that time allowed it, but this was the exception not the rule.
If in doubt, feel free to ask.

Yo! I thought the submission deadline was tomorrow?
I just realised I wrote the date wrong when I listed when submissions close. So I'm adding this to the team list to vote on. Sorry about that.

The votes are in, and the winner for the Swalot teambuilding competition by two votes was YouMeAndRNG. Congratulations!

From YouMeAndRNG: https://pokepast.es/1232dca570182bb9

Since it is an odd numbered competition, the next theme can be any pokemon from the top 30 of the VR (link), and will be chosen by YouMeAndRNG as a reward for winning the last competition. If they don’t want to choose, or don’t choose by 21/05/25, then I’ll post a theme by 22/05/25 (GMT).

YouMeAndRNG has chosen a new theme for the DPP OU teambuilding competition. This time it is Agility!

You can submit any OU team so long as it contains the move agility. Rock polish is allowed too.

As usual, the winner of this competition gets to choose the next theme.

Happy building :)
