DPP Tiering Changes (for DWL I, all changes since DPP Draft I on Smogon last winter)
Hey all. Endless here, back to give an update on all the changes that have been made to DPP in the past year. This post will include changes from the Smogon DPP board to the current Distortion Draft Tournament that transferred over to DWL, as well as changes from the Distortion board to DWL. Without further ado, let's hop right into it.
Rises
Tyranitar
(17 --> 18) One of DPP OU's finest has been making significant waves in this year's Distortion tournament. Numerous top players have been taking it to impressive finishes so far, and it has been very dominant in many games. Based on its successes throughout the year, we have moved it on par with the other top tiers at 18 points. This change was also made for the current Gen 3-5 draft team tour offsite, the MPL, so we will see if the price bump in both team tours was warranted.
Rotom-Appliance
(16 --> 17) Rotom-Appliance is arguably the biggest winner of this year. It has gone from a good but not amazing 16 pointer to debatably the best Pokemon in the 17 point tier. It has been extremely effective on a number of different team styles and has been going earlier in the draft as a result of this and the increased value of it as the tier's premier spinblocker. The rise of Spikes has been a notable meta development and Rotom-Appliance fits seamlessly onto those teams. This change also applied to Distortion, and Rotom-Appliance has had fantastic results there even after the price bump.
Starmie
(16 --> 17) Another top tier becoming even better, similar to Rotom-Appliance, Starmie has been getting drafted earlier, going round 1 in most pools at this point. With the rise of Spikes offense, Starmie being the best spinner in the format is a huge boon for it. It has also seen a ton more experimentation with raw offensive sets, especially on team compositions with a second spinner alongside it. This change was made for MPL as well as DWL, and I fully expect Starmie to continue to be worth the increased price.
Kingdra
(15 --> 16) The breakout star of both Smogon Draft DPP I and this year's Distortion tournament, Kingdra has finally been moved up. This change has been a long time coming, and with the continued success of it on both rain and non-rain teams, it has proven to be one of the top raw offensive threats in the metagame. With over a 90% bracket rate in the Smogon tour especially, Kingdra clearly deserves this rise, and this has been applied here as well as MPL.
Celebi
(14 --> 15) Like Shaymin in 2024, another 100 base stat Grass type has had a fantastic set of tournaments. Celebi provides an alternative to Shaymin with a very different movepool, while still providing the ability to be an offensive and defensive grass type as well as a status absorber. As Celebi has been becoming more popular to similar levels as Shaymin, we have increased its price to match Shaymin's.
Gyarados
(14 --> 16) The premier "win condition" of the format has had a great year. Despite its lack of versatility, drafts have been supporting it better and it has benefited from meta developments such as the rise of Spikes that it avoids, giving it an advantage over other similar win conditions. It was increased to 15 for the Distortion tournament, and has continued to perform well above expectations, leading to the 16 point price for DWL and MPL.
Snorlax
(14 --> 15) The only Pokemon with a 100% bracket rate in the Smogon tour, and a strong performance in this year's Distortion tournament on top of that. Snorlax has finally been moved up from its resting place of 14, and I could honestly see it increasing further if it continues its success.
Bronzong
(13 --> 14) One of the most successful Steel types over the course of this year, Bronzong has eclipsed other options and established itself as a fantastic defensive piece on many team styles, so we've increased it by a point to reflect this.
Registeel
(12 --> 13) See Bronzong above. Registeel is similar, just slightly worse so it is 1 point lower. They perform the same basic function, with Bronzong's additional immunity giving it a slight edge over Registeel's higher raw bulk.
Breloom
(11 --> 13) Sleep is now legal, which is a huge buff to Breloom. This enables its offensive and defensive sets to both be significantly more threatening, so its price has been updated for the rule change.
Mesprit
(11 --> 12) As Uxie has fallen, Mesprit rose. Both perform similar roles, and while Uxie is better overall, Mesprit's unique traits have bumped up its draft rate to the point where we raised it for Distortion and its lived up to that rise.
Mismagius
(11 --> 12) Mismagius has had a great year as a solid spinblocker. It's basically just Gengar for a cheaper price, without that many notable differences outside the worse raw stats. It has been one of the more successful mons in this year's Distortion tournament, even after bumping it to 12. This is a Pokemon I'd keep my eyes on, as it could rise further in the future.
Jolteon
(10 --> 12) I talk about other speed options being preferred over Pokemon that dropped in the Drops section, and Jolteon is one of the premier causes of that. It has exploded in popularity and successful finishes over the course of the year. We moved it from 10 to 11 for Distortion and it has continued to excel, so it has been moved up again.
Sceptile
(9 --> 11) Sceptile has had the same trajectory as Jolteon. It increased in popularity as a speed option, was bumped up a point for Distortion, has continued to succeed, and thus been moved up again.
Wobbuffet
(6 --> 9) and Wynaut
(2 --> 4) We severely underpriced these in the Smogon tour and they were pretty toxic at such a low price point. We increased them even higher than seen here for Distortion, at which point they were barely drafted, so we've moved them back down slightly to hopefully reach a good middle ground for them.
Other Rises
Drops
Skarmory
(17 --> 16) Skarmory is still a defensive all-star, however it has been getting drafted later over the course of this year's tournaments, even occasionally going undrafted. It is still the best Pokemon in the format at Spikes setting and provides a ton of defensive benefits to all sorts of drafts, so its price hasn't decreased much. As a result of going later in the draft, we have reduced its price slightly.
Clefable
(16 --> 15) Another defensive piece that has had a fall off in terms of tournament results. While Magic Guard is undoubtedly a fantastic ability and Clefable's other traits are useful, the difficulty of fitting Clefable on teams has led to it going undrafted on quite a few occasions. The price decrease reflects this as well as the increase in opponents taking advantage of Clefable's passivity at high levels.
Hippowdon
(15 --> 14) You are probably noticing a trend by now of the strongest passive defensive pieces falling off slightly. Hippowdon is another victim of this, as unlike the previous two Pokemon, it really only fits on stall or stall-adjacent drafts. While those styles are viable, this limiting factor has caused us to move it down slightly.
Swampert
(15 --> 14) While Swampert is significantly less passive than the Pokemon discussed so far in the Drops section, its lack of utility outside Stealth Rock as well as lack of recovery has led to it going undrafted occasionally. Its lack of flexibility in terms of role as well as the lower draft rate has led it to drop here.
Uxie
(15 --> 14) Uxie is a fantastic offense enabler, especially on rain teams when paired with Kingdra. However it has been getting drafted less as players opt for cheaper options that fulfill similar roles. We have moved it down by a point to test if this will help it get drafted more and be considered over other options if players are willing to pay a bit less of a premium for its roles.
Dugtrio
(14 --> 11) One of the biggest drops over the course of this year has been the fall of Dugtrio. What was previously considered a viable speed option has fallen off a cliff, with only a few pools in this year's Distortion tournament drafting it, even after reducing it to 13 for that tournament. With the meta seemingly having eclipsed it, Dugtrio's price has fallen significantly to be on par with similar speed options.
Empoleon
(14 --> 13) Empoleon was previously regarded as a DPP draft all-star, with its ability to flex both offensive and defensive sets effectively. Unfortunately, its awkward defensive typing and low speed has caught up to it, with the rise in Spikes and more offensive teams in general making it significantly more difficult to get effective value out of in-game.
Machamp
(14 --> 11) This one is fairly self-explanatory: the complex ban of No Guard + DynamicPunch has made Machamp essentially just an alternative to Hariyama, so it has been priced accordingly.
Mamoswine
(14 --> 13) Mamoswine is a fundamentally solid Pokemon, but players have been tending to pick other Ground types and wallbreakers instead of it.
Crobat
(13 --> 12) Crobat is still a good Pokemon, but as other speed options have become popular, it has fallen in draft rate, so its price has dropped as a result.
Milotic
(13 --> 12) With passivity being punished more and the role of bulky water being less vital in the current meta, as well as the susceptibility to Spikes, Milotic has been getting drafted signifcantly less. Hence it has moved down.
Weavile
(13 --> 12) Weavile's lack of power in DPP due to the lack of base power on its moves has led players to prefer other speed options and offensive threats.
Abomasnow
(12 --> 8) Hail has always been terrible. Abomasnow is finally going undrafted nearly 100% of the time, so its price was dropped by 2 points going into Distortion and another 2 for DWL. Maybe at this price point people will draft it as a way to counteract the sand from the increasingly popular Tyranitar.
Froslass
(12 --> 11) Froslass has been quite unpopular recently, and while some top players have done impressive things with it, the overall lowered draft rate caused it to move down slightly.
Miltank
(11 --> 10) This is the same situation as the other passive defensive pieces, meta conditions no longer suiting it as well.
Porygon-Z
(11 --> 10) Porygon-Z is being passed over for other wallbreakers so it moved down.
Slowbro
(11 --> 10) While it is marginally better than Slowking who is also at 10 points, neither is being frequently drafted.
Staraptor
(11 --> 10) Previously a Pokemon that was drafted with relative frequency, its limitations such as the Stealth Rock weakness have made it less common than other wallbreakers.
Azumarill
(10 --> 8) Azumarill is a fine offensive water type, but it was by far the most expensive Pokemon to go undrafted in all 32 pools for the Distortion tournament, so it has seen a signifcant drop in price.
Moltres
(10 --> 8) Moltres saw some success in early DPP draft tournaments, but similar to Staraptor, the rise of spinblockers has made its Stealth Rock weakness much harder to justify using. It was moved down 2 for Distortion and wasn't drafted too much there either.
Cacturne
(8 --> 4) and Sandslash
(7 --> 4) We were very cautious with unbanning the Sand Veil Pokemon at the start of the year, but they've been largely terrible and had their prices significantly reduced to reflect that.
Other Drops

and more!
I would like to give a huge thank you to
jeronis and all the staff for the Distortion Draft Tournament and Martini Premier League for working with me to refine the tiers. I look forward to seeing how DPP does in its first major Smogon Draft team tour! Good luck to everyone competing in DWL!
