Drowzee

qc: Corporal Levi / Berks / Tricking
gp: P Squared / The Dutch Plumberjack
[OVERVIEW]

Drowzee's niche lies in its fantastic special bulk, which, when combined with its Psychic typing, lets it beat common special attackers such as Abra and Skrelp. A decent ability in Insomnia also makes it a great counter to Foongus. Furthermore, Drowzee has a decent movepool with support and attacking options such as Thunder Wave and Shadow Ball. However, Drowzee is slow, very passive, and weak to the common Knock Off, causing it to lose momentum. In addition, Drowzee is reliant on Wish for recovery, making it more vulnerable to status and taking up an additional moveslot.

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Wish
move 2: Protect
move 3: Psychic
move 4: Thunder Wave
item: Eviolite
ability: Insomnia
nature: Bold
evs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 12 SpA / 196 SpD / 20 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Wish allows Drowzee to heal itself or other Pokemon. Protect lets Drowzee scout its foe or safely heal itself with Wish. Psychic is Drowzee's strongest STAB attack, hitting Poison- and Fighting-types such as Skrelp and Mienfoo super effectively. Thunder Wave cripples common switch-ins to Drowzee such as Pawniard.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread with a Bold nature gives Drowzee 24 / 14 / 18 bulk, hitting Eviolite numbers and letting it pass 12 HP Wishes, with the leftover EVs used to slightly bolster its Special Attack and Speed. Insomnia makes Drowzee immune to sleep-inducing moves, such as Foongus's Spore. Eviolite boosts Drowzee's Defense and Special Defense by 50%.

Usage Tips
========

Use Drowzee's fantastic special bulk and Insomnia to switch into powerful special attackers such as Abra and Skrelp or into sleep inducers such as Foongus. If you think the opponent will switch to a counter, such as Pawniard, use Thunder Wave to cripple the counter as it switches in. Avoid Knock Off users, as Drowzee will take severe damage from them and lose its Eviolite, which it needs to effectively check the threats it wants to check. Drowzee can be a momentum sink; thus, it is best used on bulkier teams that don't mind the momentum loss it causes.

Team Options
========

Fairy-types such as Spritzee and Snubbull can absorb Knock Off for Drowzee while Drowzee beats Poison-types for them. Bulky Normal-types such as Munchlax or Pursuit trappers such as Stunky are useful to help beat Ghost-types. Stealth Rock setters such as Pawniard help Drowzee guarantee the 2HKO on Foongus with Psychic.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Drowzee can make use of its decent physical movepool with options such as Zen Headbutt, Drain Punch, and the elemental punches. However, most of these options are weak coming off of Drowzee's low Attack. Shadow Ball is useful for hitting Abra for much more damage than Psychic, but it is useless outside of that. Due to its low Speed, Drowzee makes for a decent Trick Room setter; however, it is too weak to take advantage of Trick Room itself. Counter hits physical attackers targeting Drowzee's lower Defense. Hypnosis can cripple foes with sleep but is very inaccurate. Finally, Drowzee has access to many setup moves, including Calm Mind, Nasty Plot, and Belly Drum, but it isn't fast enough to use these effectively.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Dark-types such as Pawniard and Vullaby are immune to Psychic and can threaten to OHKO Drowzee with their STAB Knock Offs, but they do not like being paralyzed. Scraggy can set up on Drowzee and does not mind Thunder Wave thanks to Shed Skin.

**Taunt Users**: Taunt users such as Cottonee can completely shut down Drowzee while not taking much from its weak Psychic.

**Status**: While Drowzee does not particularly mind paralysis, burns and poison can be especially debilitating, since Drowzee's reliance on Wish for recovery makes the passive damage add up quickly.

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types such as Gastly and Calm Mind Drifloon can force Drowzee out with the threat of a super effective STAB Shadow Ball, but they are crippled by Thunder Wave.

**Physical Attackers**: Strong physical attackers such as Corphish can target Drowzee's average Defense with super effective attacks such as Knock Off.

Overview:
Good -> decent ability; it only really helps against Foongus and Bellsprout, which isn't a huge offensive threat and isn't too common, respectively.
Mention that it's weak to common offensive types like Dark.

Team Options:
Porygon doesn't really beat Ghost-types, put RestTalk Munchlax instead.

Other Options:
Where you mention Drain Punch say that it has good physical coverage with the elemental punches and stuff, but the base power is a little low to make them worth it.
Mention Counter.
Mention Shadow Ball to beat Abra more easily.

Checks and Counters:
Give special mention to Scraggy because of Shed Skin.
Tauntfoo takes a fair amount from Psychic, I don't think that's the best example.
Maybe add another section for strong physical Pokemon like Larvesta and Corphish that can beat it pretty easily.

QC 1/3, good work

just fix this minor thing in Moves:
Wish provides Drowzee and its teammates with recovery and can allow it to give free switches to teammates and heal them if they are weakened.
Protect allows Drowzee to scout for moves, recover from Leftovers, and get a Wish off.
Thunder Wave cripples Pursuit trappers as well.

Set Details:
Leftover EVs are given into offenses -> Special Attack

Leftovers?? bro this is LC

Moves:
  • Protect allows Drowzee to recover from Wish and scout for moves.
Other Options:
  • Shadow Ball should probably be the first option here, as checking Abra is mentioned as one of Drowzee's niches
Checks and Counters:
  • Reorder it as follows imo
    • Dark-types
    • Taunt users
    • Ghost-types
    • Status
    • Physical Attackers
  • This kinda aligns more with Drowzee's functions and what stops said functions.

don't do Tricking's stuff lol

whoops i thought about an OU mon when writing this part of the check so i included leftovers as well lol and i didn't read it anymore. However, the point was splitting the effects of Wish and Protect.

Anyways, instead of going over my check as if it was totally wrong, you could have waited for QC 3/3 (idt it was a big deal) or just told him not to include the Leftovers thing (my bad) - especially considering you told him to change the same things + only the order in C&C and then to emphasize a move in Other Options which isn't even that useful (abra gets forced out anyways).

No worries, I'll do QC 3/3 even if there won't be anything else because the analysis is detailed, though I don't like the way you handled this, Berks.

Yeah, sorry, that was my bad :(

Add the weakness to common moves like knock off to the overview; say that it relies on its item (the loss of eviolite really reduces its bulk making it unable to check many attackers).

The given EV spread with a Bold nature gives give (n, the original is correct. spread is singular, so it should be gives ("spread gives"). "with" doesn't work the same way as "and"; "x with y" is still singular if x is singular. same goes for "along with", "combined with", and some more that I can't remember right now... so yeah Tahu don't make this change) Drowzee 24/14/18 24 / 14 / 18 bulk, hitting Eviolite numbers and letting it pass 12 HP Wishes, with the leftover EVs used to slightly bolster its Special Attack and Speed. (Comment: I'm not sure how its special bulk allows it to switch into Spore and the like - I'm assuming that this is what you meant.) If you think the opponent foe (opponent is fine here. this is a case where both work, so you don't need to go out of your way to fix these. the foe can switch to a counter in the sense that it is the one being switched out, so it works, but the opponent can switch to a counter in the sense that they are clicking the new Pokemon to send out, which also works. or you can think about it this way: you would leave a sentence like "Switch to a counter" alone, cause there's nothing wrong with it--but who is this sentence 'talking' to here? a person, not a Pokemon, since it's people that read our analyses, not Pokemon. since we're speaking to a 'person', telling them to switch to a counter, that implies a person switching to a counter is fine. so both opponent and foe work here. generally you'll need to fix opponent/foe usage when talking about taking damage, fainting, being crippled etc, because that stuff ONLY applies to Pokemon, not people, so only foe can work in that case. but stuff like using a move, both opponent and foe can work, because the Pokemon uses the move and the person clicks the move, so they both can be said to 'use' it, so both are fine. anyways yeah Tahu you don't need to change this if you don't want to) will go switch to a counter, such as Pawniard, use Thunder Wave to cripple the counter as it switches in.
